Album review: FRAUDPROPHETS – Poptosis

FRAUDPROPHETS - Poptosis

www.fraudprophets.com [Release date 03.06.19]

Looking at the cover, you could be forgiven thinking that Fraudprophets are the latest post-punk wannabes.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.  This is an album of mostly cool jazz fusion grooves.

If we’re looking for references, Scott Henderson comes to mind even if in his mellower moments.  Led by guitarist Sean Halley and drummer Nate Morton who both have an interesting session/production pedigree, the duo were brought together by session ace Michael Thompson in 2003.

The one major exception to the mellow groove – apart from the more muscular opening track – is ‘Eat A Frog’.  I’ve noticed that any self-respecting guitarist seems to need fulfilment in a country-tinged blow-out even if it doesn’t chime with the rest of the album.  This particular track is given greater fingerlickin’ kudos with Jenee Fleanor’s fiddle.

When I was in a rather smart public library recently, they were playing background music and I was reminded to use “shazam” to elicit more detail.  It was in fact Mike Stern, but I am sure, hearing this, Fraudprophets would have the same effect.

Aside from the country indulgence, this album is a great listen, background or otherwise.  ****
