Album review: ROXY BLUE – Roxy Blue

ROXY BLUE - Roxy Blue

Frontiers [Release date 09.08.19]

Coming a mere 25 years since their debut album (“Want Some”), Roxy Blue are back with a brand new album, very good it is too, and with the exception of guitarist Jeffrey Wade Caughron, the band comprises of original members Todd Poole on vocals with Josh Weil and Scotty Trammell on bass and drums respectively. Where some bands in this position may have reworked old demos, Poole has written the entire album from scratch, thus bringing together some classic elements of the band and mixing those with a heavier and therefore fresher and more modern sound.

I’ll be honest, this self-titled effort was not at all what I expected, and this is not a bad thing as the album is one of my favourites so far in 2019. The album starts with the infectious sound of “Silver Lining” and “Rockstar Junkie” both of which have a certain swagger to them. There are a couple of great ballads in “Blinders” and the Def Leppard like “Collide”, plus the slower “How Does It Feel”, and these sit nicely alongside the likes of heavier tracks like “Scream”, “Til The Well Runs Dry”, ”Human Race”, “Outta The Blue” and “Overdrive”.

This is a great album, without a weak moment in there. The band may be heavier in parts then we remember them but it’s still Roxy Blue and it’s still good. Welcome back. *****
