EP review: FROST* – Others
Inside Out [Release date 05.06.20]
Frost* mastermind Jem Godfrey, along with Nathan King (Level 42) and John Mitchell (Lonely Robot, Kino), are back with a new EP ‘Others’ and a new album, ’13 Winters’, is set to follow in the autumn. Their last album was 2016’s ‘Falling Satellites’ and the six tracks on this EP were originally destined to be part of that album (the album was originally planned as a double).
‘Exhibit A’ starts off like the Prodigy before exploding into a riot of keys, chanting vocals and more of those mesmerising drum beats. Oh and just when you thought you had the handle on the song, in comes a spaced out guitar solo, impressive and then some. A cautionary tale of wishing for fame and what you can get.
‘Eat’ features samples, snatches of voices – again the keys are in the fore to the mix. Like Trevor Horn on acid! Music like this was what headphones were made for.
‘Fathers’ certainly sounds like something of ‘Falling Satellites’. A hook filled chorus driven along by synths and drums (Andy Edwards and Craig Blundell provided these on this EP, although Blundell has since left the band and they have yet to announce a replacement).
‘Drown’ allows the listener to drift off in a sea of gentle keys and vocals, very different in feel to the rest of the songs on ‘Others’.
Be interesting to see what direction the new album goes in as these songs were from over four years ago.
Certainly not leftovers, more a tasty musical starter ahead of the main course, the new album ’13 Winters, due later this year. Frost* continue to create enjoyable and memorable music, refusing to stick to any genre, being a little bit prog, electronica, pop, rock – all sounding wonderful mixed together and given a touch of Frost* ****1/2
