Ahhh live music we miss you so and even someone like me who isn’t normally a big fan of live albums has been playing a lot of live tracks this year. So when of the many great bands I have discovered via Get Ready To ROCK!, namely PictureHouse, releases a live album I am more than happy to give it a listen.
PictureHouse have made a name for themselves in their native Ireland as the sound of 1,700 fans at this sold out show from October 30 1999 ably demonstrates. Recorded at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre as the band had seen ‘Sunburst’ become one of the most played songs on Irish radio for 15 months, the album the song came from ‘Karmarama’, had made the top ten album chart. They had also completed three national headline tours inbetween arena and stadium support tours with the likes of The Corrs and Meatloaf.
David Browne’s soothingly sweet vocals are highlighted on ‘Fear Of Flying’ (although he ramps it up by the song’s crescendo). You And I’ and ‘Thanks’ – power pop doesn’t get much better than this. The band’s big hit ‘Sunburst’ gets a suitably rousing reception from the crowd, whilst there are levels of almost boyband hysterics from the audience during ‘Love In The Street’!
‘Somebody Somewhere’ closes the set and what a song to end on. One of the band’s finest and little wonder the crowd sing along to every word.
This live recording not only captures PictureHouse at their best but makes you realise how much live music means to us all. As an introduction to this wonderfully talented band this is a good a place as any to start and for those lucky ones there that night, a permanent reminder of what must have been a pretty special night.
