Album review: THE DUST CODA – Mojo Skyline

DUST CODA – Mojo Skyline

Earache Records [Release date 26.03.21]

The Dust Coda’s latest album Mojo Skyline was recorded at Modern World Studios with the multi-platinum, award-winning producer Clint Murphy (Manic Street Preachers, Thunder, Devilskin), following on from their self-titled debut in 2017.

The album has 12 tracks of pure rock and roll, opening with ‘Demon’ which is gritty and heavy hitting and with that you know you are going to be in for a treat! If you’ve not heard them before, don’t miss out any longer, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

To date there have been 3 singles released from the album already, ‘Limbo Man’, ‘Breakdown’ and the latest single, ‘Jimmy 2 Times’.

Talking about ‘Jimmy 2 Times’, making the video and on working with Andrew Morahan, executive producer, (known for his iconic work with Guns N Roses, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, amongst others), the band comments:

“J2T is a tune about a fictional gangster, a sinister trickster, the Artful Dodger all grown up. The name of the song is lifted from one of the cameo characters in the classic Martin Scorsese film ‘Good Fellas’.

The video itself pays homage to the classic gangster flicks coming out of America in the 80’s and 90’s but with a modern British twist. Andy Morahan, Josh Trigg and the rest of the guys at Geronimo Boy totally got the vibe of the song and constructed this gangster rock n roll paradise aboard a ship on the docks of the Thames in the freezing winter. It was a hell of a shoot, minus 2 degrees below deck but there was plenty of Whiskey to go around.”

You can hear influences of Led Zeppelin amongst others, with Drake’s vocals reminiscent of Plant in his heyday on ‘I Have Been Waiting’ (magnificent heavy bassline and thumping riffs) and ‘Rolling’ – the Dust Coda have certainly earnt their place in the new wave of classic rock hall of fame – long may it continue, these are exciting times for new rock music!

For anyone who dislikes manufactured pop TV, then track 10, ‘They Don’t Know Rock n Roll’ is for you – “no voice, no soul” “Them fools on the television, they don’t know rock n roll” – absolutely spot on in my view, but secretly or overtly, none of us want to be mainstream either!

My favourite tracks on this album were hard to choose as they are all really good, but for the variety, I’ll pick ‘Dream Alright’ (clever lyrics ‘”I’m forever walking tightropes in my dreams”) , ‘Breakdown, ‘She’s Gone’ (“I think about the times when I was lonely, sometimes this guitar’s my only friend”) and not forgetting the foot stomping, ‘Jimmy 2 Times’. Put it on, play it loud and repeat! I’m sure I’m educating my neighbours lol.

Outstanding. *****
