Album review: LAURA MEADE – The Most Dangerous Woman In America

LAURA MEADE - The Most Dangerous Woman In America

Doone Records [Release date 21.05.21] www.laurameademusic.com

Reviewing Laura Meade’s previous album – ‘Remedium’ -  GRTR! scribe Pete Whalley’s enthusiasm was such that he was quoted in despatches in a full page print media advertisement.  Vocalist in New York based prog rockers Izz, this is Meade’s second offering this time co-written with band member John Golgano.

Readers will want to know more about the imposing album title: it doesn’t refer to Meade but it’s the longest track on the album and – like the album concept – a tribute to those “whose stories remain untold, whose lives have been neutralized by those with unchecked power”.

As with the 2018 solo debut this album is quirky prog and allows Meade to be more expansive outside the confines of her usual band where she shares vocal duties (most of the band feature here as back-up).   But again, as with ‘Remedium’, the album reveals a great voice and strong melodies.

Standout tracks like ‘Leaving’ and ‘Burned At The Stake’ are fused by electronica and bring to mind a latter-day Kate Bush.  And, a bonus for a “concept” album, all these tracks can be enjoyed in their own right, with songs like ‘End Of The Road In Hollywood’ and ‘Doesn’t Change A Thing’ highly accessible and compulsive.

Those who like female fronted prog/neo-prog, such as the UK band Magenta, will find something of interest here.  Overall, the main vibe harks back to eighties synth rock and whilst Izz fans will find this a musical diversion it is nevertheless a journey that should be taken.  ****1/2
