EP review: SEETHER – Wasteland – The Purgatory EP

SEETHER - Wasteland - The Purgatory EP

Fantasy Records [Release date 30.07.21]

Seether’s new EP will certainly appeal to existing fans of the band as it features three never-before-heard tracks and an alternate take of ‘Wasteland’ (along with the original album version). The EP gets a limited edition vinyl release in October.

Written and produced by Shaun Morgan, engineered by the band’s newest member Corey Lowery and mixed by Matt Hyde, this EP follows the release of Seether’s ninth album, ‘Vis Pacem Para Bellum (“If you want peace, prepare for war”)’ last year.

‘What Would You Do?’ is one of those emotive songs beloved of alt/nu metal bands – you can almost picture the accompanying video. Shaun Morgan certainly has a set of pipes on him, perfect for this style of music.

‘Will It Ever End?’ recalls the mighty Soundgarden, a cracking song and digging those backing vocal harmonies, plus the razor precise riffing.

‘Feast or Famine’ has a whiff of Nickelback about it along with a nice bit of screamo in the mix.

The EP is bookended by two versions of ‘Wasteland’, the original album track and a new alternate version that adds piano and cello, adding a new and intriguing sound to the song.

Seether have been around now for over twenty years and are still coming up with thoughtful, enjoyable music. ***1/2
