EP review: LIBERTY LIES – HaLLoween EP

LIBERTY LIES - Halloween

Liberty Lies – Official Website (libertyliesofficial.com) [Release date 29.10.21]

Liberty Lies formed in 2010 and the current line up consists of vocalist Shaun Richards, guitarist Josh Pritchett, drummer Adam Stevens and bassist Miles Bagshaw. They have been on the road a fair bit, bar the pandemic, and are off again with Scarlett Riot next month (November).

This Halloween themed five song EP includes four covers and a brand new song, ‘Monster’. Liberty Lies are lumped in with the New Wave of Classic Rock bands, yet they have quite a bit of the sound of bands like Shinedown and Stone Broken, plus a bit of grunge. You can certainly hear that on ‘Monster’, which has a riff matching the song’s title.

First up of the covers is ‘Bad Moon Rising’, which features Wolf Jaw frontman Tom Leighton, who sadly passed away in October 2021. Quite poignant listening to the lyrics at times on this Creedance Clearwater Revival classic. Chloe Ozwell guests on Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rhiannnon’, which Liberty Lies suitably rock up.

‘I Put A Spell On You’ possibly the weakest cover, although the guitar and fuzzed piano work well. Fallen State guest on a raucous run through AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’, a suitably rocking end to the EP. You can’t go wrong with a bit of AC/DC and these young whippersnappers certainly add their own twist to it.

A themed EP that you can use on your Halloween playlists this year and in the future. A stop gap release for Liberty Lies, who like many bands during the pandemic, are now getting back onto the road and that will be the main focus for band’s for whom playing live is their lifeblood. ***1/2
