Cargo Records [Release date 15.10.21]
Furbaby & the Tight Spaces was initially a lockdown project for Chicago based guitarist Adam Arling (The Last Vegas), and was originally intended to release a series of singles, as it happens there are eight of these amongst the albums ten tracks.
The idea was brilliant, Arling sent guitar and vocal ideas to friends including past and current members of bands such as Urge Overkill, Warrior Soul and Tyla & Dogs D’Amour. The results speak for themselves, with each artist unaware of the others efforts, the melting pot of sounds and sonic textures is outstanding.
The opening salvo of “Boxed In” and “Moon Boy” pull you in and then you move through the stomping garage rock of “I Can Only Give You Everything”, the swirling psychedelic feel of “Tiny Steps”, “Reaching Out (For Higher Ground)” and “Behind the Door” (the first two of these kind of remind me of Tom Petty at times, and that is never a bad thing) or the out and out sleaze and swagger of “Social Distance”.
“Furbaby & the Tight Spaces” isn’t finished with you yet though, the album is completed by some rather stealthy “lighter” tracks in “Waiting”, “Cocoa” and “Next Year”. The kind of songs that you listen to a couple of times and then remain in your head for weeks.
The unusual choice of moniker? Have you ever tried to share a production studio with a cat? The band will be touring the album next year (yes, I know plans may have to change but let’s share the positivity!!) and if the live show is as good as the album, then we are all in for a good time. ****
