Album review: RUSTY SHACKLE – Under A Bloodshot Moon

RUSTY SHACKLE – Under A Bloodshot Moon

Bandcamp [Release date 19.08.22]

Welsh indie-roots band Rusty Shackle have not passed across the musical radar of this reviewer until now and I am gald that have finally. Rusty Shackle have been recording and touring around the globe since 2010. The band consists of Liam Collins (vocals, guitar), Scott McKeon (fiddle, banjo, vocals), Baz Barwick (guitar, tenor guitar), Ryan Williams (bass), George Barrell (drums, percussion) and Alex McConnachie (guitar).

A song like ‘Lost In Tokyo’ has that crossover appeal to younger and older audience, similar to Mumford & Sons at their peak. ‘The Rain’ makes use of a bass and percussive backbeat to create a wonderfully immersive song.

Liking their social commentary on ‘Not This Time’, similar to Ferocious Dog and again the backbeat is impressive on here. ‘Gallows Song’ continues that indie/punk folk feel, whilst ‘The Stranger’ is a classy piece of Americana that would fit seamlessly onto a film soundtrack set in the wild west.

‘Coming Home’ and ‘Lanterns’ are another couple of strong tunes that have musical appeal across the ages. ‘Coming Home’ in a particular with its positive chorus and lyrics is a song for the chaotic and troubled times we are living in.

Maybe a bit too rock for some folk purists but that’s their loss as the rest of us can enjoy Rusty Shackle’s mix of folk, indie and rock.

Lively, energetic and packed with good tunes, ‘Under A Bloodshot Moon’ is a winner. Rusty Shackle, remember the name and listen to their music as they are on the up and up. ****
