Single reviews: BILLY IDOL, 1+1 with MICHAEL ARMSTRONG, PERFECT PLAN

Billy Idol is lining-up his second EP release in just over a year with ‘The Cage’ due out on September 23. Ahead of this we can enjoy the title track which is a bit of a belter, featuring a heavy riff and solo from Steve Stevens and finding Billy Idol in fine vocal form. Much better than any of the songs last year’s ‘Roadside’ EP. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the EP.

1+1 featuring Michael Armstrong have a nice tuneful pop song ‘How Much More Of My Heart’ out now. We’re long term fans of the music created by Michael Armstrong here at GRTR! and this is quite possibly the most mainstream pop tune he’s appeared on. Should be a top 10 smash if there was any musical justice in the charts!

Enemy Eyes is another Frontiers project which is fronted by Hardline and Axel Rudi Pell vocalist Johnny Gioeli and their debut album is out in mid-October. Joining him is fellow Hardline member and Frontiers ‘go to’ songwriter, producer & musician Alessandro Del Vecchio. ‘Here We Are’ is the radio single. It’s like one of Hardline’s heavier songs but lacks any wow factor. As this is the 100th album to feature Johnny Gioeli here’s hoping the rest of the album holds more interest…

Out on the same day and label is the third album from Perfect Plan ‘Brace For Impact’ and have released a second song, ‘Surrender’, off the album. Now this is how you do classy melodic hard rock with vocalist Kenti Hill in fine form. Two albums of high quality melodic hard rock and looking good for the third album from these guys.

‘What Do You Know About Love?’ is the first single from White Skies’ debut album ‘Black Tide’ which will be released via Pride & Joy Music on November 4. White Skies is a UK based AOR band formed by former Samson/First Strike vocalist Mick White, guitarist Ray Callcut (ex- Ya Ya) and former Double Cross/Dante Fox keyboard player Pete Lakin. Just prior to the start of the pandemic in 2020 Mick and Ray (who were old friends from the eighties) had discussed the idea of writing a pure AOR album in the style of Journey, Foreigner and Toto. Nice and heavy melodic rock, not really like Journey due to Mick White’s gravellier vocals, maybe more in the vein of Little Caesar or fellow UK band Blood Red Saints. Impressive.
