Album review: STATUS QUO – Quo’ing In, The Best Of The Noughties (2CDs/3CDs)

earMusic [Release date 16.09.22]

Quo’ing In… is a compilation album from one of rock’n'roll’s great survivors, Status Quo. It looks back on the band’s recordings released since the year 2000, embellishing the material selected with up to date studio rerecordings, and sharp remixes.

10 of the band’s 33 albums were released in the last 22 years, a pace unequalled by any of their contemporaries. That the music always sounds fresh is testament to the band’s durability, and in no small way due to the shuffling in and out of band members, sometimes made through choice, sometimes forced on the band by tragic circumstances.

The package comes in several versions . . . Digital, 2 CD and 3CD .

In the 3 CD version, the third CD is crammed full of live tracks from the band’s celebrated gig at the world famous Westonbirt Arboretum in 2010, including ‘The Wanderer’, ‘Rain’ and ‘Roll Over Lay Down’, all clearly going down a storm with the crowd.

The 18 track CD1, The Noughties Hits, presents cutting edge remixes of live favourites, ‘Backbone’ and ‘Liberty Lane’, plus an “Out Out Quoin” version of ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ and a 2010 recording of ‘In The Army Now’.

CD2, Quoin’ Rarities, is another VFM, 18 track affair. Biggies, ‘Paper Plane’, ‘Rockin All Over The World’ and big fan favourite, ‘Caroline’, are all presented in the sonic finery of  2022 studio versions.

In its own way, this compilation documents the second half of Quo’s life in rock, creating a high def picture of a band always tuned to the wavelength of their core fan base. An enduring outfit who managed to overcome significant obstacles and still come out on top.

As ever present founder, Francis Rossi says: “What Status Quo achieved during this 20 year period – in the face of challenges that none of us could have predicted – is surely worth celebrating”. Amen to that.  ****
