Album review: THE CITY KIDS – Filth

Website [Release date 25.11.22]

The City Kids, according to their bio are “forged from Northern grit and Danish flair, a bunch of ragtag, rock n’ roll reprobates, part punk, part sleazy gutter-trash dirt.” They have released a rather good Motorhead covers EP plus three albums previously.

The City Kids are John JJ Watt (vocals, guitar), Dennis Post (guitar), Berty Burton (bass) and Dave Sanders (drums).

From the off ‘Filth’ gets the musical adrenalin going and you can see why they did Motorhead so well. Berty Burton’s bass is a rumbling beast that I am sure Lemmy would have approved off.

‘Self-Righteous’ recalls the Wildhearts in their earlier days, full of vim and vigour with a chorus that just won’t let you go. ‘Alone’ and ‘It Should Have Been Me’ are top notch, punk rock/pop bangers. The latter adds in a bit of piano to mix things up a bit.

‘Ghosts’ is another one with a sing-a-long chorus. Chances are the City Kids are an energetic live act as their songs are anthems made for an audience.

John JJ Watt has a world weary, gruffness to his singing which adds to the appeal of the band. ‘Yesterday’ and the title track being prime examples of this.

The City Kids are loud & raucous, with choruses big enough to land a whale. Turn it up and enjoy! ***1/2
