Album review: STEVIE JONES AND THE WILDFIRES – Clarity In Dusk

STEVIE JONES AND THE WILDFIRES - Clarity In The Dusk

Wildfire Sessions Productions www.steviejones.com [Release date 13.10.23]

This album was born out of solitary walks late in the day in the local countryside during Lockdown. That locality includes Helpston in East Northants where the artist Stevie Jones is a regular on the local music scene.

Lockdown has produced some good stuff in terms of music as the world became more introspective. And ‘Clarity In Dusk’ is no exception.

This is a lovely album, with strong songwriting throughout (and great playing). The vibe is soft rock/alt-folk/Americana.  There’s a nice dose of melancholy and reflection but it’s also uplifting too.

The only thing lacking is a lyric sheet (although available on the website) for thoughtful tunesmithery which covers a range of topics from the romantic (the excellent ‘Violet Lane’ and early single ‘Carmen’) to personal improvement (‘Do Or Die’), the environment (‘False Gods’), and the title track’s seeking solace in nature. Elsewhere the jaunty ‘Come In From The Rain’ is a real standout.

Four tracks appeared on Jones’ solo effort during Lockdown, a mini-album called ‘Come In From The Rain’.

The album – the Wildfires’ third – reminds me of the sort of quality songwriting and musicianship you find on albums by artists like Mike Grogan, Paul Menel, or Mike Armstrong who all sadly sit outside the mainstream. It must be very frustrating.

This is a compulsive and really good listen. ****1/2
