Album review: UNIFONY – Unifony III

UNIFONY - Unifony III

Volkoren [Release date 03.11.23]

The great thing about GRTR! is our eclecticism over 20 years, very much reflecting the taste and preferences of our solid review team. We’re not bound by classic rock but the music has to move us.

And as if to illustrate this, it gives us great pleasure to review an album like ‘Unifony III’. It features prominently Moya Brennan (Clannad) on harp and ambient vocals adding an ethereal quality.

If you’ve ever listened to the likes of saxophonist Jan Gabarek there is a cool Nordic vibe permeating these grooves. I always thought it was something to do with the lack of daylight but the link is also to one-time Gabarek labelmate, and fellow countryman, trumpeter Nils Petier Moivaer.

The main movers and shakers are Minco Eggersman and Theodoor Borger who established the Unifony project in 2016 with the albums recorded organically using Borger’s vintage and high-end studio gear.  It’s all beautifully realised.

This is essentially jazz noir far more accessible than the average ECM release and Brennan’s contribution makes it something special along with the fluttering guitar and piano figures.

File this with Held By Trees and it’s perhaps no coincidence that the album artist James Marsh designed all the Talk Talk album covers.

Music for a darkened room. *****
