Frontiers Music [Release date 06.06.25]
Inglorious’s unimaginatively titled fifth album sees bassman Colin Parkinson and singer Nathan James back together. (They resolved their differences over a pint, where else?)
Joining them in this new iteration of the band are guitarist, Richard (Cradle Of Filth) Shaw and award winning drummer, Henry Rogers.
The new lineup emerges as an altogether more substantial unit, full of renewed vigour, more focused on the classic rock sounds of their earlier album, if occasionally let down by uninventive songwriting and/or arrangements.
Opener, ‘Testify’ is something of a damp squib, spluttering through 4 minutes of overcooked seventies hard rock stylings.
From that point their swaggeringly tough songs act like a hard rock juggernaut. ‘Eat You Alive’, ‘Devil Inside’, ‘Stand’ all stand testament to the band’s rediscovery of their classic rock mojo.
V isn’t a genre exercise, not really. It’s more of an industry standard riff on the familiar. A re-tooling exercise that sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.
At times, the songs seem underwritten. Several – ‘Say What You Wanna Say’ and ‘Believe’ are prime examples – have hooks you can hang your hat on but the verses are surprisingly tuneless.
Then again, ‘In Your Eyes’ and ‘End Of The Road’ are unadulterated blasts of neatly orchestrated hard rock with a steely spine. And here there’s enough grit and gristle in the mix to make up for lack of nuance and/or subtlety.
Those two tracks in particular show up the album’s frustrating lack of consistency. When it’s good it’s great, but … ***
