Album review: FOLKLAW – Catch The Sun

FOLKLAW – Catch the Sun

Fiddle of 8 Records [Release date 25.04.25]

FolkLaw are a Nottinghamshire-based folk-rock band led by founder Nick Gibbs (fiddle, vocals), Bryn Williams (vocals, guitar, bodhran), Martin Vogwell (vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitars), Gaz Hunt (drums, percussion, vocals), Helen Harper (flute) and  Jon Dowling (bass). Nick and Martin are the main songwriters and all the songs are originals, many with a fine toe-tapping melody about them.

‘Catch The Sun’ marks the first new album from FolkLaw in six years and was co-produced by long-time Gerry Colvin sideman Lyndon Webb, who also plays mandolin and guitars. Guests on the album include Paul Hutchinson (accordion), Emma Vogwell (alto sax), Steve Harper (trumpet) and Paul McLaughlin (trombone).

Then we have ‘He Dances’, a neat fusion of a reggae beat coupled with flute and guitar. Those toes get tapping on ‘Bookshop’, a song which has a topical lyrical theme. Loving the lyric “Why can’t all the world be like a bookshop/All the subjects sitting side by side.”

Rousing tunes like ‘Hope Is Still Alive’, with its lively fiddle and flute playing, are a mood uplifter in these dark and troubled times. The more traditional folkies will enjoy ‘Shire Man’, with its sing-a-long chorus and ‘Fighting For Charlie’, a song about Bonnie Prince Charlie, is a lively affair with the lyrics giving a potted history of the prince.

FolkLaw have the wide folk rock appeal of Ferocious Dog, The Levellers and Show of Hands and doubtless wow the crowds at festivals. ‘Catch The Sun’ is a gem of an album and one that gets better and better with each play. ****
