Single review: THE ROLLING STONES – Jealous Lover

rsjl

Should it be five stars? Maybe. A definite 4.5, but when you go to five there’s no where else to go, and the next single might be even better. Anyway that’s my dilemma. What’s more pressing is telling you how bloody good this music is.

For any self-respecting aficionado of The Rolling Stones, you will know this next statement, and for anybody wanting an intro to the band, listen up – The Rolling Stones are a multi headed beast – not just a rock n roll band, not just a blues band, they cover just about every credible genre of music going . Rock n roll, blues, country, soul reggae, americana, (they damn near invented that one on Exile On Maine Street) , old school rhythm n blues, punk, ballads , disco, funk, and even pop. So where does this one lie?

Well it could sit real easy on side two of Tattoo You, which was pulled together from discarded songs going back to 69, and it was released in 81. So fast forward to 2026 and it shows how timeless their songs are. With the soulful backing and Jaggers falsetto voice, it could fall anywhere in the last fifty five years!

It’s kind of country soul, with Keith and Ronnie doing their famous ancient art of weaving with their guitars, funky guitars if you will. Delicate strumming with country notes in answer, with no less than Steve Winwood on Rhodes piano and organ. All leading up to a powerful chorus, which Jagger is a master at delivering. It’s slow, it’s sensual, it’s …..yeah I’m gonna say it – it’s sexy!!!.

It certainly is a joy to hear these boys doing what they do best, after a few years in the wilderness doing Stones by numbers. They are sounding like they haven’t sounded like for years. They sound full of joy, they sound reconnected, they sound like The Rolling Stones at their best.

B side is Divine Intervention, a straight ahead country rocker. Harking back to Some Girls era with the guitar tone, but developing into an Exile, All Down The Line kind of work out replete with brass section. It builds, it twists, it drops, it picks itself up and features Robert Smith of The Cure on guitar. It also features Steve Winwood again. And I have to mention this Steve Jordan on drums is such a good replacement for Charlie Watts. On both of these tracks ,close your eyes and it would be difficult to tell the two apart. And talking of divine intervention, or pure coincidence, but Andrew Watt the producer really carries some heavy duty magic dust in his pocket. He either brings out the best in the band, or they bring out the best in him. Whichever it is, thank goodness they found each other.

Out now on ten inch green vinyl and CD, and of course streaming platforms if you really must.
