Back in the day, when thrash was at its height, of all the ‘Big Four’ I always found Megadeth to be the weakest link. I did persevere and caught them live on several occasions but I remained underwhelmed by Mr Mustaine and co. However I was in the minority and the band have continued to find success and of late they have enjoyed a popularity boost thanks to the recent ‘Big Four’ festival dates. So can this new release finally convince me ?
No, is the simple answer. Kicking off with ‘Kingmaker’ the album gets off to a galloping start and rocks along like a good ‘un. For me though there is little substance to the track and Mustaine’s vocal, although a bit lower in range these days, still grates. The album title track is up next and for me it is the best track on the album. A good melodic rock track with a hooky chorus and a decent vocal, more songs of this quality and I may have been swayed.
The rest of the album descends into standard metal/thrash territory which is no bad thing, but there is little to inspire or grab you by the scruff of the neck. The only other track of note is up last and ironically it is a cover version of Thin Lizzy’s ‘Cold Sweat’, the band though do a good job on the track, if only they could write a track of the same calibre.
Maybe I am being harsh here, after all as Dave M would tell you he has had to fight against adversity and a near 30 year career is something to be proud of. My opinion though remains the same, Megadeth leave me cold and whilst Super Collider is by no means a bad album, it has little soul and is thrash by numbers, sorry Dave!
