Album review: LITTLE RIVER BAND – Cuts Like A Diamond

Frontiers www.frontiers.it

Led by vocalist/bassist Wayne Nelson, who has been with the band since the early 80’s, the band may lack original members or the 80’s AOR sound of the John Farnham fronted days, but they still sound like the LRB. Opener ‘The Lost and the Lonely’ is the nearest to the 80’s AOR sound and a nice upbeat song to start the album off.

‘What If You’re Wrong’ classic Little River Band, encompassing their trademark harmonies and short, but sweet guitar solos.  Same applies to ‘You Dream I’ll Drive’, superb harmonies, nice melody and a little Chris Rea approved guitar flourishes. They can drift a little into MOR territory like on ‘Someone’, a bit too syrupy even for my finely tuned melodic ears!

The album keeps those classic Little River Band harmonies alive and well, with the music heading down a more commercial country/MOR route which will go down a storm in the US. The Little River Band are one of the finest melodic based bands out there and this album sits well with the band’s back catalogue.
