Now here’s a band from the dark and distant past. Coney Hatch are a Canadian rock band who release 3 albums back in the eighties – debut Coney Hatch in 1982, Outta Hand in 1983 and Friction in 1985 – and now some 28 years later the original line-up return with the originally named Four.
What you may not know is that in April 2008 lead vocalist and guitarist Carl Dixon, who was lead vocalist with The Guess Who at the time, was left clinging for life after a head-on road accident in Australia. After months of operations and gruelling rehabilitation Carl re-united with his Coney Hatch band mates in August 2010 at a reunion concert in Canada. The band then played Firefest in 2011 and as a result Frontiers offered them the chance to record again.
The Coney Hatch that recorded Four is the original line up of the band, namely the aforementioned Carl Dixon, Andy Curran on bass and vocals, Steve Shelski on guitar and Dave Ketchum on drums.
The cobwebs, mothballs and everything else is well and truly Blown Away by the opening number which comes loaded with an AC/DC vibe. Boys Club features some very Nickelback like lyrics but don’t let this put you off as the chorus is pure melodic rock. Coney Hatch are surely paying tribute to the mighty Cheap Trick on the wonderful Connected and Revive features some Def Leppard like harmonies.
The rest are classic, but yet modernised, Coney Hatch – meaning a mix of AC/DC riffing, infectious choruses and powerful yet tuneful vocals. If any song captures the early Coney Hatch sound then it has to be We Want More and after listening to this then I’m sure you will too! Marseille even branches into French (well they are Canadian after all) for the classic “Je m’appelle Jean-Claude Tremblet the bass man….” If you liked Coney Hatch before then you’ll love this.
If you’ve never heard them before then do yourself a favour and give this a spin…you won’t regret it. An excellent release.
