Deluxe Box Edition reissue (Hear Music) 2012
Originally released in 1971, “Ram” was the only album credited to both Paul and Linda McCartney and was the second solo album he released between quitting The Beatles and forming Wings.
The album was recorded in New York and on release knocked The Stones’ “Sticky Fingers” off of the top of the album charts in the UK (coincidentally that very album knocked “Ram” off 2 weeks later) and contained the minor hit single “The Back Seat of My Car”.
The albums cover and the track “3 Legs” were the cause of rumours of a rift between McCartney and his fellow ex- Beatles, with the track seen by the others as an attack on them. Lennon went so far as to respond with his song “How Do You Sleep?”. A number of tracks on “Ram” have the feel of latter day McCartney Beatles output- “Eat At Home” and “Ram On (Reprise)”are the best examples of this , with “The Back Seat Of My Car” and “Smile Away” seemingly blending this with the feel of later Beach Boys recordings.
“Too Many People” is a jolly and typical McCartney track, “Monkberry Moon Delight” is more raw feeling and “Long Haired Lady” is less commercial than the rest of the album. Fans of popular British comedy “Only Fools and Horses” will be familiar with the song “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” as this was used in one episode and rumour has it that McCartney personally intervened in order that it could be used by the BBC.
As well as the re-mastered version of the album you also get the original mono version and a disc of bonus material. This bonus disc includes the 1971 single “Another Day” and it’s b-side “Oh Woman. Oh Why”, “Little Woman Love”, which was the b-side to Wings’ single “Mary Had A Little Lamb”, and five previously unreleased tracks- all of which have been newly mixed. The best of these is instrumental “Great Cock and Seagull Race”, there is also an 8 minute version of “Rode All Night”.
The box set is completed by a DVD which includes the 11 minute documentary “Ramming”, which is narrated by McCartney himself, and the videos for “3 Legs” and “Heart of The Country”.
The re-issue of “Ram” is great for McCartney fans and this box set is certainly value for money.
