There’s something in the ether. Having just reviewed goth/metal revivalists Sinnergod I’ve also been privy to a new German band and their debut album. The read across – albeit with less heavy guitars – is quite startling.
Run Liberty Run meld electronica with rock and – as with Sinnergod – a densely layered sound. Based in Karlsruhe, Germany, this young band may have absorbed that country’s synth-pop heritage – whether it’s Kraftwerk or Giorgio Moroder – but they’ve worked any influences into a musical tapestry that is wholly contemporary. Nearer home, the album also references any number of eighties synth-poppers (Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Visage, Ultravox, OMD…).
An age thing maybe, harking back to a personal “golden age” perhaps, but I’ve been really impressed recently with albums showing an eighties/electronica bent and I would put the 2016 albums by Myrath and Nemesea also in this category.
Sadly, for a band for whom great things are expected from their label, there isn’t a lot of information about Run Liberty Run (in English at least) and my guess is that ultimately the album will fall down the cracks: not rock enough for some, a bit too glossy/Eurovision/Pop Idol /Sam Smith for others.
This would be a shame because the album as a whole exhibits great songwriting and production consistency and tracks like ‘We Are’, ‘Rain’ and ‘Take Me’ demand repeated play. A guilty pleasure, certainly, but a pleasure nevertheless. ****
