Hansel and Gretel (Release date – 10th Dec 2012)
Red Lamb is a bit of a thrash metal supergroup formed by ex-Anthrax guitarist Dan Spitz and Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine. They have enlisted several friends to record this album which has been put together in aid of Autism Awareness, a subject close to Dan Spitz’s heart as he and his wife have twins with autism.
The album was co-written by Spitz and Mustaine and, as you would expect, it contains aspects of both Anthrax and Megadeth. Helping out on the album, the duo have secured the services of Chris Venna on keyboards, Patrick Johansson on drums and Don Chaffin on vocals. Spitz provides all the guitar and bass on the album which will be familiar to anyone with a ‘Thrax album in their collection.
‘The Cage’ kicks off proceedings and builds from a slow start into an all out thrash track, surprisingly although Spitz wrote all the music the album sounds more like Megadeth although I think that is down to Don Chaffin’s vocal delivery which is very Mustaine like.
There is more to the album than straightforward thrash though, there are also moments that bring to mind Rage Against The Machine and Disturbed. The lyrics are raw and honest and reflect Dan’s experiences of living with autism and the world of officialdom and denial that parents can be plunged into in order to get a diagnosis. He also reflects the inner torment the individual can face when locked in their own mind.
Top tracks for me were ‘Puzzle Box’ which appears to be a track that was written from the heart about his own experiences, ‘Keep Pushing Me’, a driving track which examines the nuances of the human mind and ‘Warpaint’ which is one of the more commercial songs on the album and which could easily make a good single release.
This is a great thrash metal album released to raise awareness of a good cause. Dan has put his heart and soul into this project and this can be heard throughout all tracks. The fact he was able to enlist such top class musicians to bring the album to fruition is just the icing on the cake.
