M&O Music
Oh no, an avant-garde doom album. I wince as this platter falls from the slip case and recall Celtic Frost’s finer works. In fact, this lot are so far off the scale they make Tom G Warrior’s ground-breaking crew sound accessible.
This is the second full release by the French quintet and the first to feature new vocalist Mathieu B Nogues. His performance is generally fine, with plenty of light and shade. The band too are technically competent and the overall sound is sharp enough if lacking a little crunch.
But the problem with these experimental rambles is that even if the band manage to stumble upon a chugging riff/rhythm interweave or soaring passage of lead power play, they want to mess up the pace, change direction or stop in their tracks before we can properly sink into it. Some sections of ‘Scarlet Rising’ and even more of ‘Black Obsidian Pyre’ are genuinely listenable. Thrilling even. But hardly have your ears perked up then the band have descended into another directionless whim of pomposity and texture, or a dead-end of shattering discordance. The most approachable track is album closer (odd placement?) ‘Hidden Lotus’, which shows a good deal of subtly and fewer diversions in its driving and passionate construction. But it is only a fleeting moment.
Eryn Non Dae are a band for only the most dedicated fans of the sub-genre, I suspect.
