Coda Records Ltd (blue vinyl)
This beautiful release (I’ll call it that because it’s great to look at and even better to listen to) features US rock band Kansas at their peak.
Coda Records have been doing a fine job of late releasing live radio broadcasts, and whatever your views on any grey area, they are bringing some fantastic live material to the masses, at an affordable price. And from a recent Kansas 6CD set comes this coloured vinyl LP that features highlights from The Palladium, New York December 1977, released in full over 2CDs on the aforementioned set.
Mixing hard rock with both Southern and Progressive rock, which a huge slice of pomp thrown in, the set here kicks off with the classic Point Of Know Return, and Dust In The Wind is another standout.
The band featured pianist/vocalist Steve Walsh, violinist/vocalist Robby Steinhardt, guitarist Rich Williams, bassist Dave Hope, drummer Phil Ehart, and Kerry Livgren who could fluctuate between keyboards and guitar, so there is plenty of scope of multi instrument duelling, and when the longer Carry On Wayward Son (side 2) mixes hard rock and Americana, and pomp in between, each comes into their own.
This set sits alongside the 5 CD set well (as do the two gold and white vinyl Uriah Heep LPs alongside the Heep 6CD set), a decent but not overdone package, and lovely music. ****
