When Kiss’ Gene Simmons recently described rock music as dead, what he failed to take into account was a the likes of Falling Red who are part of a new breed of bands that are making some damn fine music without the massive fanfare that accompanied rock bands in the past.
The often difficult sophomore album appears to have been anything but for British band Falling Red as this sleaze laced effort is one of the best independent releases of the year.
Raw yet polished and with a modern feel ‘Empire of The Damned’ has no weak spots amongst its 11 tracks. Produced by Matt Elliss (The Black Spiders, The 1974) and mastered by Pete Maher (U2, Linkin Park, Rolling Stones) the band used the increasingly popular Pledge Music to raise the funds needed to record the album- and those fans who backed the recording will no doubt be over the moon with the results.
Highlights are numerous and include ‘The Devil You Know’, ‘We Escaped A Cult’, ‘Break Me’, ‘Outcast’, ‘Empire of The Damned’ and ‘Lonely Way To Die’- however, this is one of those albums that you can just leave on play.
Falling Red are without a doubt one of the best British bands for a while and hopefully ‘Empire of The Damned’ will bring them to the attention of a wider audience. *****
