Volbeat’s meteoric rise shows no signs of abating any time soon. With the changes in line up, the latest being the addition of bassist Kasper Boye Larsen who replaced the departed Anders Kjolholm, it would be easy for the band to stall and lose momentum. ‘Seal The Deal’ shows however that things in the Volbeat camp are in rude health and that the guys are on a mission.
Over the last couple of albums the band have honed their sound and with the addition of Rob Caggiano on lead guitar the playing has taken on a more technical edge. Rob’s influence on the last album ‘Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies’ was limited but his involvement from the outset on ‘Seal The Deal’ is clear to hear.
Opening track ‘The Devil’s Bleeding Crown’ was the first track to be aired from the album and from the opening bars you are in no doubt that this is a Volbeat track. A big riff coupled with Michael Poulsen’s distinctive vocal delivery carry things along on a rocking romp which hits the mark. ‘Marie Laveau’ follows and carries on that ‘Volbeat sound’ of the opener, you can’t go wrong with melodic rock and a big chorus.
‘For Evigt’ is up next and features vocals by Johan Olsen on the chorus who last guested with the band back in 2007 on the track ‘The Garden’s Tale’. Johan again sings the chorus in Danish to good effect and the song also features a good middle eight section featuring a bit of banjo to mix things up. There is also a version of this song in English with Poulson singing the chorus which is included on the album, personally I prefer the Danish one. Another guest appearance crops up on ‘Black Rose’ which features vocals by Danko Jones.
The guys have also chosen to include a couple of cover versions on the album this time around. The first is ‘Rebound’, a punky, Ramones like song originally done by Teenage Bottlerocket which is fun. The other is a cover of the Georgia Satellites song ‘Battleship Chains’ which stays true to the original and is a great version.
The album title track ‘Seal The Deal’ is the heaviest track on the album and allows Rob Caggiano a chance to really let rip on the guitar solo. As I say Rob’s addition to the band has lifted the guitar work up a few notches and his soloing in particular has added a more polished and accomplished edge to the band’s sound.
‘Seal The Deal and Let’s Boogie’ is an excellent album that fans of the band will love. Hopefully the new line up will settle and allow Volbeat to continue to grow their fanbase, and their sound, further. ****
