Album review: THUNDERMOTHER – s/t

Some all-female, Swedish, rock ‘n’ raunch, anyone?
What hot blooded male’s interest could possibly not be piqued by such an invitation? Shame on you, in these overly politically correct times.
With all bar founder member/guitarist/songwriter Filippa Nässil quitting the band last year after touring their 2015 sophomore release Road Fever, Nässil has done a quite remarkable job of seamlessly re-booting the band with this new self-titled release.
In part, that’s down to the somewhat formulaic, high voltage, style of rock the band delivers – big AC/DC style riffs, big drums, big hooks, and whiskey soaked vocals. A style that’s seen Thundermother perform at Wacken, and tour with the like of Michael Monroe, W.A.S.P, D-A-D, and Danko Jones.
But what, perhaps, impresses most is the finely crafted material that pays dividends in terms of sleazy, instant gratification and sees Thundermother pick up where Road Fever (2015), and the band’s debut Rock ‘N’ Roll Disaster (2014) left off – with Guernica Mancini (vocals), Emlee Johansson (drums), and Sara Pettersson (bass) playing their parts to the full. Mancini, in particular, is a real ‘find’.
If there’s a criticism, the material does tend to be a little ‘choreographed’, but by way of a curve ball, the band’s first power ballad – ‘Fire in the Rain’ – hints at a broader potential. But while Thundermother may win few awards for originality, their irrepressible brand of brash, anthemic, fist pumping, rock ‘n’ roll is undeniable ‘fun’. And there’s space for that in everyone’s collection. ****
