Album review: EMILY WOLFE – Outlier

EMILY WOLFE - Outlier

Crow’s Feet [Release date 25.06.21]

With one album to her name to date Emily Wolfe – who has a recently released custom guitar the Epiphone Sheraton Stealth, Emily Wolfe – she has decided to stretch her musical boundaries on this album – “This record is my attempt at crossing genres between classic ’70s rock, ’80s pop, ’90s grunge, and modern pop elements of today.”

Outlier was produced and co-written with Queens of the Stone Age’s Michael Shuman, although the album’s sound owes more the synth pop and rock than QOTSA’s sound.

The lead single ‘Something Better’ is a belter of a tune, all synth beats and a big chorus. A song to crank up loud. ‘Vermillion Park’ treads a similar musical path – another possible single? A song that you could imagine Pat Benatar singing back in her 80’s heyday.

‘No Man’ sees her delve back into her blues rock roots, albeit with a modern twist. ‘Cover Of Virtue’ sees Emily nail that modern pop vibe, with its funky beat and melodic vocals, it’s a winner folks. ‘LA/NY’ follows a similar style, complete with tasty ‘n’ funky guitar solo.

A female fronted Muse? ‘Damage Control’ sounds like that and like any song on this album, perfect for a bit of mainstream radio airplay.

Emily Wolfe is a name to watch out for and in ‘Outlier’ she has an album that can appeal to the masses. Cutting edge pop with a distinct rock guitar edge to it. ****
