Golden Robot Records [Release date 01.08.22]
Since the late ‘80’s Love/Hate’s Jizzy Pearl has been one of the most instantly recognisable voices in rock, and Pearl himself has been releasing consistently great music throughout that time (and not only music, see his latest book “All The Devils” if you want a good read). Latest album “Hell, CA” has all the hallmarks of a classic Love/Hate record= clever lyrics, great guitar riffs and those Pearl vocals.
It’s a bit of a cliché sometimes to say “there is not a weak track here”, but this really is the case with “Hell, CA”. The album cranks to life with opening track “One Hot Minute” and it could easily be 1989. For me the trio of groove laden “Gonna Take You Higher”, “Soul Mama” and the slower “One Last Chance” are all essential listening, the latter being a fine example of Pearl’s cleverly crafted lyrics.
“When You Gonna Come Home”, “Battered and Bruised” and “Lonely Days Are Gone” are also great classic sounding Love/Hate, but it is “Hard To Say Goodbye” that deserves a mention. The track is a tribute to Pearl’s late brother Bill, who passed away in 2018, but could easily be a song about Quiet Riot bandmate Frankie Banali who died in 2020.
All in all, “Hell, CA” was well worth the wait and with Pearl’s loyal following in the UK, hopefully we will get to hear the album live soon. *****
