Album review: SOIL – Play It Forward

SOIL - Play It Forward

Cleopatra Records [Release date 26.08.22]

A covers album from Soil whose last studio album was released back in 2013, so this covers album should keep their fans happy, even if it contains no new original songs.

‘Playing It Forward’ is an eclectic mix, opening with a seriously heavy take on Tom Petty’s ‘Runnin’ Down A Dream’. Works well and the heavier vocals give the song a new lease of life. The Motorhead cover ‘No Voices In The Sky’ is a more obvious choice and Soil certainly give it a go. Don’t think anyone could do better than the original personally.

The lead track off here is their version of Halsey’s hit `Nightmare’ with accompanying video. Never heard of Halsey but do like this song, so will investigate further.

Good, lively version of the Foos ‘Monkey Wrench’, which riffs like a good ‘un! They dedicated this to Taylor Hawkins. Not sure the music world needs another version of ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’.

Covers albums can also be a good way to discover songs you’ve not heard before. On this album the White Zombie song ‘Thunder Kiss’ 65′ and Helmet’s ‘Unsung’ both had me tracking down the originals for a listen.

The Ram Jam band’s classic ‘Black Betty’ sees the album out. It is a song that has been the staple of their live sets for some time making it an obvious contender for a covers album.

Bit of fun to be had and heard on here which will give Soil a bit of breathing space to crack on with their next studio album. ***
