History Of Guns – Whatever You Do, Don’t Turn Up At Twelve

This is a confusing album. The band have been together for 16 years and although I follow music closely I had never come across the name before. This is History Of Guns' fourth album and looking at the bands Wiki page there have been plenty of singles and even a DVD release, so how have they kept such a low profile with all this activity?

I discovered the answer when listening to this latest release and it was further confirmed again by the ever reliable Wiki page. History Of Guns' musical style is to have no style, they try to cram as many different genres as possible on to the album which has very mixed results. On opening track ’Kicking Down The Doors’ the band embrace a bit of punk, sounding like the Anti -Nowhere League with Lemmy’s little brother on vocals. This then leads into ‘Friday Night, After Work’ which goes into full dance mode and third track I.C.E takes you into Nine Inch Nails territory. You also have ambient tracks, a bit more punk and a couple that could be filler on a Prodigy album.

I think, ultimately, in the bands quest not to pigeonholed in any one genre they confuse listeners, hence the reason that after 16 years they are still existing on the fringes. There are good numbers on the album, but I was ultimately left scratching my head and reaching for the skip button. I think though this may be the reaction that the band are hoping for…
