Album review: RHINE – An Outsider

[Released 05.02.16]

To mix Thrash with Death Metal is asking for elitists to come crawling from the walls. However different the two genres may be, it is hard to pick the differences out in Rhine’s music. This is a good thing, the band have seemingly blended the two together brilliantly.

The Seattle band are creating a culmination of metal in a way it has never been done before. Due to the massive mix the band is using it is hard to know what the next song will hold. The opener to the album Dreaming of Death is an absolute epic. The piece clocks in at almost 12 minutes and has its twists and turns exhibiting the bands large array of ability. At times this album can go from mind numbingly beautiful, to skull crushingly brutal.

Spell Of Dark Water does this amazingly, from 1:04 onwards we are treated to a euphoric solo which transitions to a delightfully heavy scram at 2:17. This song then descends back and forth between the two showcasing the sound the band so beautifully achieve. The title track for this album provides a nice long piece, almost at 10 minutes. This is something I’m beginning to gather that Rhine do well. The length allows for a better consistency to the variation in the songs. A few more songs on this album which had caught my attention upon first listen were P.R.E.Y. which opens in ridiculous fashion, even for a band mixing death metal and thrash. After a minute of what can only be described of sheer ludicrosity we then move into the home comfort of madness.

Into The Unknown is an amazingly unique piece, albeit having some very questionable vocals to begin with. The song oozes madness. A final song would recommend would be Dissolved in Fire simply due to its brilliant atmosphere. This band does not care about labels and it certainly doesn’t care about genres. The only thing I can say they care about is melting your face off and then giving you a cuddle. This album is a mix of every type of madness and it works brilliantly. ****1/2
