Album review: DAVE BURN – Nothing Is As It Seems

DAVE BURN - Nothing Is As It Seems

www.daveburn.net  [Release date 01.06.21]

‘Nothing Is As It Seems‘ is the 17th solo album from guitarist Dave Burn and first to feature vocals, a departure from previous solo albums which were all instrumentals. Dave Burn has toured and recorded as lead guitarist with UFO’s Paul Raymond and his band the Paul Raymond Project. Dave Burn also plays all the instruments on the album, bar ‘Darkest Hour’ where Lee Small plays keys and strings.

Jon Astley (The Who, Tears For Fears, KT Tunstall et al) helps out on production and mastered the album. Also mention must be made of the album’s packaging, and indeed the PR booklet, stylishly and professionally designed/created by Tristan Greatrex.

Handling the vocal duties on this release is Lee Small. Lee is currently a member of both Lionheart and Sweet, plus he’s worked with the likes of Shy, Phenomena, Signal Red, Ginger Wildheart, Skyscraper, United Nations and many more.

Lee is a great choice of vocalist, not only as he is one of the most consistent on the UK hard rock scene along with FM’s Steve Overland and Thunder’s Danny Bowes, but he has a soulful, melodic singing style that really suits the ballads on here like ‘Into Light’ and ‘Before You Cry’.

There is plenty of epic hard rock for the listener to immerse themselves in, none more so than ‘Labyrinth’ which starts off with a piano intro, before the guitar kicks in and Lee’s vocals start at the two minute mark of this eight minutes plus song. Soaring vocals, coupled with a big production chorus make this an album stand out.

There are plenty of choice guitar solos to enjoy throughout the course of the album and full marks to Dave Burn for not going overboard on the solos. There are two instrumentals on the album, bizarrely one is amongst the shorter tunes on here. ‘Hit The Ground Running’ could be a TV theme with its hypnotic riff and stylish soloing. ‘Boat To Samarkand’ is a melodic guitar treat, featuring plenty of solos over a soothing musical backdrop.

‘Made Of Stone’ has that chugging Black Sabbath feel to it, especially the ‘Seventh Star’ album that featured Glenn Hughes as Lee Small does sound like the Voice Of Rock at times.

For his first foray into featuring vocals on one of his albums, Dave Burn struck gold working with Lee Small, who suits the style of music down to the ground. Here’s hoping they work together again in the not too distant future.

A gem of a melodic hard rock album and don’t let this slip past on your musical radar as there is much to enjoy on here. ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

Dave Burn provides a bit more background on the album and his time in Paul Raymond’s band…

Why did you decide to feature vocals on your latest album?

I got tired of people saying you should get a singer in to make your albums more interesting!! Haha!

Seriously, It wasn’t a decision as such, it was down to a mutual friend Tristan Greatrex.

How did you hook up with Lee Small? Did he have a lot of ideas on the songs on the album?

Tristan has created artwork for both Lee and myself and suggested I ask Lee if he would do this album, thankfully Lee agreed. The songs were already written and most of the lyrics too but I briefed Lee to “do whatever you want regarding melodies and lyrics”. I couldn’t be happier with what Lee has brought to the table, the melodies, the power but mostly his feel.

All being well would any live dates be a possibility with Lee Small?

Very doubtful as he‘s a very busy guy with commitments to Lionheart and The Sweet. I’d dearly love and if the opportunity arises then I’d jump at the chance!

A few of your earlier albums are currently unavailable. Are there any plans at some point to re-issue these and are there any unreleased tracks that could see the light of day at some stage?

I just feel those earlier albums are of a certain time in my life, each one has meaning to me and instrumental work doesn’t appeal to the masses. There’s a couple of albums I’d like to remix like The Woodcutter’s Tale’ and the ‘Koss tribute’ I did. Sadly the masters of that album died in a hard drive! I have a bandcamp site with a few of those albums on www.daveburn.bandcamp.com

How did you come to be part of Paul Raymond’s band?

I was invited to Workington in Cumbria for Paul’s wife’s birthday, by Mark Coles. Mark was a very close friend to Paul.

Mark plays in a band over there called Slagbank; Mark on Bass, Tony Steel on Drums and Buzz Elliott on vocals and guitar. They were playing at her party and Paul was getting up to jam some songs. I was initially reluctant to go as a) I wasn’t invited by Paul or his wife and b) I would be jamming with one of my favourite musicians. We jammed UFO’s Only You Can Rock Me and Doctor Doctor. Eight months later I was invited back over and did a full gig of pretty much most of Strangers In The Night set and a couple of other tracks, Try Me and Just Another Suicide.

After that Paul asked me to play on his Rewind 50 album and then we followed up with the tour.

What were your live highlights whilst in the PRB and what is your lasting memory of him?

We didn’t do many gigs but they were the best of fun, the band just felt right and we just kept smiling at each other. That is my main memory, it was a very happy camp. We did have one very good after party in a hotel in Selby but I’ll not go into that.

Paul was a very generous person, always cracking jokes and very amiable. He never told me what to play or how to play. I had musical freedom to play how I wanted. We were in the process of writing an original album and talking of another tour, sadly that’s not to be.

Message for your fans and anything else to add…

Thanks to those who have supported me over the years, I know it’s not easy listening to my music, haha!

I just hope people listen to this album even if they don’t listen to any of my others. Lee has done the most fantastic job on this, it would be a shame if people didn’t hear it for themselves.

And many thanks to you for the interview!!

Dave

Rising Stars: FANS OF THE DARK

Fans of the Dark were formed by drummer Freddie Allen (from the cult AOR band Houston), vocalist Alex Falk(Swedish Idol and theatre productions of Rent and La Cage Aux Folles, bassist Robert Majd (Captain Blackbeard, Metalite) and guitarist Oscar Bromvall.

Allen co-wrote much of the Houston album, which won Classic Rock’s AOR Album of the Year (2010). Looking for an outlet to freely express himself musically, he began writing and putting a band together. Having crossed paths with Falk when they attended a Stockholm high school for performing arts together, he knew this ‘monster voice’ was just what Fans of The Dark needed. We recently caught up with Freddie to get more on Fans of the Dark…

‘Life Kills’ video

Get the single here

You and Alex (Fans of the Dark vocalist) have known one another since college, did you always stay in contact?

We have known each other since we were 16 or 17, and I think we re-connected through Facebook ten years ago or something like that. He was always a fantastic singer with total presence, and I just asked him one day on Messenger if he would be willing to record some songs. Last year it finally fell into place.

Are you still working with the band, Houston at all?

Nope. We are still friends, but I am no longer involved in that band. I wish them all the best, though.

How long have Fans of the Dark been together, have you had a chance to
play any live shows yet? and how do you feel about streamed gigs?

We formed last summer during the pandemic, so no shows yet. We have just recorded the first album together and we are enjoying the moment. When time
comes, we will consider live shows. I haven’t watched any streamed gigs, so I don’t know about that. But if people like it, why not!

Covid has been a global problem, and your debut single talks about making the best of and appreciating our time, how have you and the band spent your time during Covid, was the album written during this period?

Yes, it has been a terrible year, and at the same time, strangely I have had time to stop and think of life a bit. I used to run to the bus, and now I just walk. It’s like that. Life has slowed down. I built a sauna in my house last summer. And after that I started writing songs again. I hadn’t really done that since the second Houston album, in 2013. I just wrote this new album in a month or something, and then we booked some studio time and went for it. It was great, focused and simple, almost like becoming a kid again.

Also, can you recommend any books, podcasts, films or tv shows you have enjoyed recently?

I recently read the Sci-fi classic “Stranger in a Strange Land” by Robert Heinlein. I guess Iron Maiden borrowed that title, but I don’t think they borrowed the plot. It’s a great, thick novel about the life of a Martian who comes to Earth and has trouble understanding our ways. Since I am a movie buff, I can recommend the horror film podcast “Post Mortem with Mick Garris”, it is great if you love horror and fantastic films! When it comes to films and tv “Cobra Kai” is a GREAT show made with lots of love for the original “Karate Kid”. And I also love “The Last Dance” about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. I must have seen it ten times. If you have Disney+ I can also recommend “The Imagineering Story”, which is about the planning and building of all the Disney theme parks: such a perfect story of following your dreams and making them real!

Can you tell us a bit more about the forthcoming album – the music and lyrical themes?

Sure, the album is really personal to us, because it deals a lot with our childhoods and young adult lives. When you are a kid, everything is scary and hard, and at the same time fantastic. You can create dreams, you can imagine stuff and make it come alive when you play. It is something that most of us forget how to do when we grow up. Some of the songs deal directly with these feelings, and some of them are more like “The Never Ending Story”, a fantasy or an old book or a film seen through the eyes of a small kid. Musically it has a lot of energy and is perhaps a little more intense than your regular melodic rock record, but it also has the odd “epic” and slow song.

News: SLIM CHANCE The Phoenix Tapes, track by track (May 2021)

THE PHOENIX TAPES is a collection of fourteen previously unreleased tracks recorded by Slim Chance since its reincarnation some 10 years ago.

Originally posted as a series on YouTube in the last part of 2020 to raise spirits in lockdown, these recordings feature performances from many of the fine musicians who have played and sung with the band in the last decade, and also a brilliant contribution from Ronnie Lane’s trusted friend and collaborator, Pete Townshend.

Besides three originals from the band there are covers ranging from Bob Dylan to Leadbelly, Cat Stevens to Jagger/Richards, as well as vibrant new versions of four of Ronnie’s classic songs. The Phoenix Tapes is released May 21st, with a live stream to celebrate on May 22ndclick here for tickets

slim chance the phoenix tapes

THE PHOENIX TAPES TRACK BY TRACK

1 ANNIVERSARY (2011)

This was written by Ronnie for his second album after leaving The Faces. It’s a celebratory song and Ronnie always intended the fiddlers Steve Simpson and Charlie Hart – dubbed jokingly by Ronnie as ‘The Fishpool Philharmonic’ – to provide the hoe-down element. Involving the trading of licks by the two fiddle players, this is a favourite with live audiences to this day. Steve Simpson sings.

2 WHEN I PAINT MY MASTERPIECE (2015)

A great song of Bob Dylan’s. The Band’s version was always a favourite of Slim Chance, who often sang this song at late night sessions after the band’s gig was over. It is sung here, verse by verse, by Geraint, Alun, and Steve Simpson.

3 HARD TIMES (2014)

Brought to the table by Alun Davies, this moving song by Stephen Foster was recorded by the band but not included in the album ‘On the Move’, which was a more upbeat affair. However, come the pandemic, which triggered the release of these tracks as a series on YouTube, this song captured the mood of the times perfectly. Alun on vocal, naturally.

4 YOU’RE SO RIGHT (2014)

Written for the album ‘See Me’ by Ronnie, this song is typical of Ronnie’s ability to be both humorous and self-effacing at the same time. Charlie handles the fiddle part and vocal. This is a more up-tempo version than the original, which was recorded at the Fishpool and Charlie played organ on.

5 ALL TOO SOON (2017)

After leaving Slim Chance in the Seventies, Steve Simpson worked extensively with Roger Chapman, and acquired a deep respect for his writing, of which this is a fine example. It is sung, of course, by Steve, and was recorded at the same time as tracks for New Cross Road.

6 CONNECTION (2014)

Alun brought this song to the table, and the band gave it a very different twist to the Stones’ original. The middle instrumental passage was written by Alun and provides an interesting ragtime interlude. Accordion is played by Charlie.

7 ROLL ON BABE (2015)

Recorded when Des Horsfall, who is the vocalist here, spent some time playing and singing with the band. This song is always associated with Ronnie, but in fact was written by Derroll Adams, who -according to Ronnie – taught him the song face to face, fittingly, on a train journey in the States.

8 ZABRINA (2017)

This song was written by Steve Bingham and is loosely based on a real-life saga of deception and betrayal, which took place when he was on tour with the Foundations in Argentina. Here Steve sings and plays bass and is accompanied on Flaco-style accordion by Charlie.

9 BLACK BETTY (2015)

In 2015 Slim Chance took part in Lead Belly Fest at the Albert Hall. The band performed Careless Love, and individual members backed other singers including Van Morrison. Here Geraint fronts the band in an unique version of Black Betty, also known as Bam-ba-lam.

10 JIVIN’ JIVIN’ (2015)

This is one of two originals by the band on The Phoenix Tapes. Steve Simpson wrote this one for a girlfriend who was a jiving specialist, and sings and plays guitar. Get on the floor!

11 TRAVELLER’S JOY (2017)

Billy Nicholls only joined Slim Chance a few years back, but was a close friend and musical partner of Ronnie’s way back in the early Seventies. This song was written by Billy shortly after he and Ronnie returned from a romantic, traveller-inspired road trip round Ireland soon after Ronnie left the Faces. It appeared on Billy’s 1974 album ‘Love Songs’. Here Billy sings, and is accompanied by the band and also by his and Ronnie’s old mate, Pete Townshend on guitars and backing vocals.

12 ON THE ROAD TO FINDOUT (2012)

Alun Davies lived just over the Welsh border, only a mile or so from the Fishpool, where Ronnie spent most of the Seventies. Alun was a frequent visitor to Ronnie’s, and they gradually got involved in playing and writing together. When Slim Chance reformed in 2010, Alun was a natural choice as a result of his skills as singer and acoustic guitar player. He is well known for both those roles through his extensive work with Yusuf Cat Stevens, who penned this song.

13 STONE (2013)

One of the first songs Steve and Charlie recorded with Ronnie when they joined the band in 1974. A remarkable story of reincarnation that came to Ronnie in a dream, it was also recorded by Pete Townshend under the name ‘Evolution’. Here Steve takes the lead in a live version recorded at the Half Moon, Putney.

14 BUONA SERA SIGNORINA (2016)

Also recorded at the Half Moon, this song, which Geraint and Charlie used to play in the late Seventies when they were part of Juice on the Loose, has resurfaced as an occasional encore to round off the Slim Chance set. Its likely the band hadn’t played it together before this version was recorded one rowdy Saturday night. Geraint sings, John Lingwood is on drums…

Album review: KITT WAKELEY – Symphony Of Sinners And Saints

KITT WAKELEY - Symphony Of Sinners And Saints

Website

An interesting mix here, and following on nicely from Kitt Wakeley’s previous album, this is a high energy programmed sounding orchestral rock, with very big (almost TSO like) production. Imagine, if you will, a synth pop band going orchestral, some crunchy guitar, and a symphonic feel that nods to Rhapsody with a hint of Bond theme.

Utilising the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the opening track Wicked Ways has a solid rock feel, while the title track has a little more shred, and a touch of choir bolsters that symphonic feel. Forgive Me features the talents of Joe Satriani, whose guitar adds a more ethereal. A change of pace for Hello Again, more piano led with swirling strings, making it a little more stirringly ambient. A fine guitar solo though. Then Conflicted, the second track to feature Satriani. A wonderful listen.

No Apologies mixes rock with piano, the orchestra ever present, a hint of Yanni, it’s a bit more Middle Of The Road compared to earlier tracks. This is always going to happen on such a journey through the senses and emotions. Again, it picks up, the choir chanting adding a great edge, but a slower starter.

Over the 10 tracks there is a range of feels, lots of emotions, and some touches of genius (not just Satriani), but the MOR does creep in, and at times there is a programmed feel. It is a good album, some enjoyable moments, it just didn’t grab me by the throat. ***

Album review: ANDY McMASTER – Rays On The Water

ANDY McMASTER - Rays On The Water

Generally Speaking Records [Release date 09.04.21]

Pianist, bassist, vocalist and songwriter Andy McMaster is a name best known as (alongside bassist, guitarist and vocalist Nick Garvey) a founder member of The Motors, a band who mixed pub rock and rock’n’roll with new wave pop, writing some fine songs along the way. Dancing The Night Away, Forget About You and McMaster’s classic Airport all remain wonderful listens to this day. The duo met while playing with Ducks Deluxe, and McMaster already had some well written songs behind him.

This album is Andy’s second solo affair and is further proof (if you ever needed any) that McMaster crafts a fine tune, whatever the style or subject matter. The album is catchy from the opening track, a hint of rock’n’roll in Road To Montgomery, and a roughness to the vocals that hints of 70s Rod Stewart. Some nice brass adds to the feel, the production matching the song writing. Then Impossible Is Nothing, which is more whimsical, a ballad inspired by Muhammad Ali. In contrast is Au Revoir Trustesse, a Chopin inspired song about loneliness, and the greatness of joy, sad start that then picks up.

Jerusalem, a track about unholiness in the Holy Land, showcases how good the song writing is as each song so far inspires a different emotion. The odd minor chord goes a long way.

Hysteria is a stand out track, a wry look at current events, in places a little edgy and reminiscent of moments on Tenement Steps, The Motors’ third and final album.

The album closes with When Germany Was Bad, a reggae inspired song with some great social commentary.

The album takes its name from sound engineer Ray Davis who, after a heavy night, would be “On the water”. And when he succumbed to his ill health, the album was a couple of tracks short, so two of the 12 tracks here (Another Politician No Joy and Hard Drugs) were recorded in the mid 80s, and they fit in perfectly here.

The album is co-produced with Lynton Guest, formerly of Love Affair.

There are some fine rockier moments here, but the album is more about just a decent song, structure, melody and lyrics.

Thoroughly enjoyable. ****

Album review: LEVARA – s/t

LEVARA- s/t

Mascot Records [Release Date 14.05.21]

So there was an American, an Englishman and a Frenchman…. no, not a set up to one of the world’s oldest forms of joke, but the line up of hotly tipped new melodic rockers Levara. The American is guitarist Trev Lukather, son of Toto’s legendary six stringer Steve, the Frenchman singer Jules Galli and Englishman Josh Devine who drummed for One Direction  - but better the sinner that repenteth and all that…

Anyone hoping for a repeat of Toto or indeed classic AOR look away now, as Levara are thoroughly contemporary in their musical approach – the only thing retro is a taut running time of 10 songs in 37 minutes. Over the past decade, the only comparisons I can reach for where leading melodic rock bands tried to completely break the old mould to this extent are Vega on their debut and a couple of songs from HEAT’s controversial ‘Into The Great Unknown’.

The trio, in the able production hands of Ethan Kaufmann, have created a big sound with a lot going on at any one time. However there are very few conventional guitar solos of any length and the music makes full use of electronic sounds, even in the creative drum and percussion work. At times it is as much a pop as a rock album, notably on ‘Can’t Get Over’ which has very little guitar.

The opening trio of songs are highly impressive- ‘Heaven Knows’ epitomises  the busy nature of their sound, with squeals of guitar, a touch of funkiness (Dan Reed was a comparison I drew more than once across the album) and a chorus with some layered high harmonies.

‘Automatic’ has an unusual song structure yet a hook big enough to carry its single word chorus, and ‘Ever Enough’ is even better. Its atmospheric opening builds into a big chorus which became lodged in my brain with massed backing vocals and a quirky guitar solo.

‘On For The Night’ and ‘Allow’ didn’t make same impact on me as soundscapes with less prominent hooks, though Trev stretches out on the latter. However ‘Chameleon’ boasts another superb chorus with loads of layers around it, and ‘Ordinary’, which began as a throwaway piece of pop, grew on me as the guitar work belatedly pushes itself forward.

Two of my favourite songs are left to last – ‘Just A Man’ boasts impressive guitar and vocals as it builds momentum and Jules Galli soars on ‘No One Above You’, the nearest to a ballad.

His vocals are a real discovery: smooth, even with a Savage Garden-like feyness on the lighter songs, but powerful too when he moves through the ranges; indeed one of the few legitimate Toto comparisons could be with Fergie Frederiksen.

This album needs to be approached with an open mindedness that as a traditionalist I am not quite sure I possess. However all in all it is a highly promising debut with good songs and successfully avoids the melodic rock clichés we know and love.  ****

EP review: THE JAILBIRDS – Jungle

THE JAILBIRDS - Jungle

Golden Robot Records [Release date 21.05.21]

Now this is a Canadian three piece called the Jailbirds, not the Aussie/Irish Jailbirds who have a penchant for AC/DC riffs, which could explain why on first listen I thought they had undergone a radical change in musical direction!

This Jailbirds features vocalist/guitarist Myke Penney, bass player Liam Hills, and drummer Eric Parent. The band have been around for a few years now and ‘Jungle’ is their second EP.

The EP is a concept piece, the idea being that song by song the listener learns the story of a person battling self and substance, constantly shifting in their resolve to overcome their depressive and anxious mind.

‘Dull My Brain’ and the title track recall Alter Bridge, mostly in the vocals of Myke Penney. ‘All I Need’ is a no nonsense rocker with the guitar solo of the EP on it for added measure. ‘Watery Grave’ has a neat almost stoner rock riff to it, whilst the final track on the EP, ‘I Will Move On’ with its harmony filled verses and whiff of early 70s rock, brings to mind fellow Canadians the Tea Party.

The Jailbirds tackle the subjects of depression, anxiety and drugs by creating some memorable tunes. One foot in the modern rock camp, the other drawing on the classic hard rock riffs. The Jailbirds impress greatly on this showing. ***1/2

Album review: GNOSS – The Light of the Moon

GNOSS - The Light of the Moon

www.gnossmusic.com [Release date 07.05.21]

Gnoss originally formed as a duo in 2015 at Glasgow’s Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, consisting of Aidan Moodie (vocals, guitar) and Graham Rorie (fiddle, mandolin), before being joined by Connor Sinclair (flute, whistles) and Craig Baxter (bodhrán, percussion). Gnoss have steadily made a name for themselves as originators of music steeped folk and tradition. For his album Gnoss have enlisted special guest Braebach’s James Lindsay on double bass.

The album also marks the first time all the songs have been written by the band. As Aidan Moodie notes: “The album was recorded at the end of a year that should have been filled with career highlights and instead became quite the opposite – and I think all the emotion connected with that was channelled into the creative process of the release and we pushed ourselves into new spaces musically”.

Instrumental opener ‘Gordon’s’ soon shows the band’s undoubted talents as the whistles, bodhrán, guitar and mandolin all weave together to create some magical folk. ‘The River’ has already been released as a lead track off the album and with its hypnotic melody is a shoe-in for radio airplay. One of those songs that has appeal outside the usual folk audience. What Mumford & Sons did so well until they went full on indie.

The sprightly ‘Good Crieff’ certainly gets the toes a tapping, whilst ‘Alistair & Katrina’s’ (Connor’s thank you to his parents for running him all over Scotland for piping practice!) starts of gently before reaching a frantic musical finale.

Aidan Moodie certainly has a strong, yet soothign vocal, as ‘Sun That Hugs The Ocean’ proves. One of the four songs on here to feature Moodie’s singing.

I am never ceased to be amazed by the number of talented young artists coming through on the folk scene, with Gnoss certainly leaping to the head of the pack with this delightful and enjoyable album. Now all we need is for live music to get back into its swing again to allow the band to get out and get their music heard for the enjoyment of many I am sure. ****

Album review: ESCAPE THE FATE – Chemical Warfare

ESCAPE THE FATE – Chemical Warfare

Better Noise Music [Release date 16.04.21]

Escape the fate have shaken off their bad boy image and this album, ‘Chemical WarFare’ sees them reinvigorated and enthused – if you like rock n roll, I’ll be amazed if you don’t enjoy this – I hear influences such as Shinedown and absolutely think this is worthy of a place in the new world of rock attracting new more diverse audiences.

They might be over a decade into their young career, but they have been proven to move crowds equally at major rock radio festivals, the legendary Vans Warped Tour, or on the road with Five Finger Death Punch.

“I hope that people think of Escape The Fate as a good time, but a good time in a better way,” singer Craig Mabbitt explains. “We want people to connect deeply with the music and disappear in it. Get lost and then return from the album, or show, feeling inspired about themselves. We want to make people feel better about life, to know they can take on all of its hardships. That’s what the music does for us as a band. That’s what we want it to do for the audience, too.”

Mabbitt, Thrasher, TJ Bell, and Robert Ortiz have each been making music, and on the road, before they were old enough to drive. An authentic electric connection with the audience is the heart of what the band are about. The guys in the band understand what it means to be broken, from childhood trauma, to the tumultuous downsides of the music business. They know how music can heal.

“I started doing this because music was my ‘escape’,” says Mabbitt. “I was running from unresolved feelings or chasing things away with a bottle. But music was always there for me. The whole experience of making CHEMICAL WARFARE, while reflecting on the other records; it was a beautiful realization to contemplate the power of music. It’s been such an escape for so many people that it puts me in my place. I become so humbled. I’m so grateful, not only that I’m still alive, but that I can get this music out of my head and that it will hopefully help some other people, too.”

Building on the momentum from Billboard Top 5 Independent Album Hate Me (2015) and I Am Human (2018), Escape the Fate have delivered what could certainly be described as their most powerful trilogy of albums.

Made together with A-list producer John Feldmann (Panic! At The Disco, 5 Seconds Of Summer, The Used) and co-produced by Kevin ‘Thrasher’ Gruft (ETF guitarist and production pro in his own right), Chemical Warfare offers up 12 tracks of pure upbeat rock from anthems to melodic ballads.

There are some guest appearances on the album, the acclaimed violinist Lindsey Stirling, “She is an angel – she has so much light in her. But the primary reason I wanted to work with her… strictly speaking musically, she is gnarly – her music is epic,” adds Ortiz. Travis Barker, best known as the drummer for blink-182, makes a handful of appearances as well.

My favourite tracks are “Lightning Strike,” “Unbreakable”, “Ashes” and “Walk on.”

It may be the same band, with the same name, but it’s a brand-new Escape The Fate. “We get up on that stage, we go into the studio, for different reasons now,” Mabbitt insists. “Throw out everything you thought you knew about this band. Chemical Warfare is a new beginning for us.”

On that note, I will close out by saying I very much like this incarnation and if you like your rock enthusiastic, lighter, danceable and upbeat, then try this. *****

Album review: SKARLETT RIOT – Invicta

Skarlett Riot - Invicta

[Release date 07.05.21]

With this latest album, Skarlett Riot have arrived at the forefront of the modern Metal scene. This UK quartet with a heavy hitting, superbly talented female vocalist and heavy, riff-led songs blending melody and raw power, Invicta delivers 11 pure metal tracks that matches talent with pure attitude and builds on the harder, heavier, faster sound showcased on their second album, ‘Regenerate’.

The band are clearly comfortable in their darker and heavier guise, reminding me of Within Temptation blended with a little Slipknot, amongst others, from the opening track, ‘Breaking the Habit’ this is a full on, metal album where the pace, riffs and energy are unrelentless, Skarlett’s vocal range is fully showcased and ranges from sheer power to utter gritty delivery.

The album was recorded throughout a time of massive global uncertainty and confusion, ‘Invicta’ is an unapologetically forthright release, with songs that pull no punches.

The band comments: ‘We are so excited to finally release our brand-new album ‘INVICTA’! This album has been three years in the making and we can’t wait for you to hear the results of the huge amount of work that’s gone into this. We’ve overcome so much together as a band throughout the years and ‘Invicta’ represents the physical and mental struggles we’ve experienced together and individually, making us who we are today – Invicta.” – Skarlett Riot.

There have been 3 singles released to date – ‘Gravity’, which has a Slipknot esq feel, “do you ever feel like you don’t belong, you’re not alone”; ‘Stronger’ with heavy riffs and ‘Human’ which is sublime.

This album demands your attention, needs to be played loud and by my second listen, I was hooked in. My tracks of choice were ‘Black Cloud’ as it showcases the breadth of Skarlett’s vocal range, ‘Not Alone’ and ‘Cut the Ties’ for the overall demonstration of the talent in the whole band, including the male backing vocals which are powerful in their own right and the heavy intro which certainly will clear out any cobwebs.

I love the fact that more and more females are leading metal bands, it’s a fantastic triumph of modern metal and rock – all power to you Skarlett, you’ll have audiences bowing down in awe with that range and sheer talent, long may you and others continue to take the metal scene by storm.

If you haven’t heard of them before, and you like your music on the heavy side of metal then give this a listen, if you’re a festival goer, you may have seen them already at Download Festival, Leeds and Reading Festival, Metal Female Voices Festival, Bloodstock, Hard Rock Hell, Camden Rocks, Steelhouse and a host of other festivals. I’m sure we will be seeing them grace the stage again soon and I for one, will be waiting, it promises to be one hell of a show. ****

Album review: VOODOO ROOM – Tension City Blues

Voodoo Room - Tension City Blues

Grooveyard Records [Release date: 27.11.20]

This is one of those projects when the stars align and the perfect power trio teams ends up on a guitar driven label whose gods are guitars slingers such as Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower, Hendrix and the like.

The fact that Voodoo Room make their living outside of albums like this playing Cream and Hendrix also helps, as both influences bubble their way up on a set of hard rocking tracks with decent lyrics, a powerful rhythm section and Pete Orr’s fret work artistry.

The band is the magnificent sum of its parts, but there’s no denying Orr’s virtuosity as he pours everything into his solos on tracks like ‘Electric Blue’. The ‘live in the studio’ feel, strains at the leash, in marked contrast to the slicker tracks before.

This album is a celebration of the power trio, in which drummer John Tonks provides the power and vitality. Bassist Andy Tolman locks into the grooves with a number of pulsating bass lines on a succession of shuffles and riff driven pieces that will please blues rock guitar fans.

Orr is a criminally overlooked talent who on the evidence of this album has much to give outside of his well known association with Hendrix.

There’s plenty of variety here and it’s not until three quarters of the way through the album that they might have thought about a tad more variety.

In fact they probably deliver that one track too late with ‘Share The Blues’,  a subtly paced and exquisitely played smoking blues. It rises from an acoustic and organ opening via a flurry of scat singing to become a passionate booked-end to a high charged album, as Orr squeezes out every last emotional nuance in his vocal.

They set out their stall on the wah-wah driven intensity of ‘Cold Love’. Orr’s clean vocal is in sharp contrast to his imposing guitar attack, on a funky groove with call and response bv’s that flows into a defining wah wah solo.

‘Shock’ references the band’s Cream and Hendrix antecedents and ‘No Problem’ is a great example of a road tested power trio, while the sub-psychedelic ‘Headstrong’ showcases Orr’s Eastern flavoured tone and works towards the closing mantra “Moving on in one direction.”

‘In The Net’ is better still, with some deft acoustic, crisp cymbal work and a mellifluous 70’s west coast feel, counterweighted by a Latino undertow and The Allman Brothers tones.

Orr dips into his locker full of tones to bring fresh impetus to a succession of riff driven pieces with melodic depth, on a linked series of song with coherent hooks, that makes ‘Tension City Blues’ a fine album.

And if ‘Playing With Fire’ – an ordinary song given extra input by some fine band interplay -  and the very live in the studio ‘Electric Blue’, and the slide led shuffle ‘ Why Do You Keep Me Guessin’ are not very memorable, they are still fine examples of a locked in power trio who gives themselves plenty of soling options.

There’s contrast again on ‘Double Six’ which could easily have been plucked from a Sonny Landreth album, and the hugely impressive title track, which opens in a blaze of harmonics and features more Allman style harmony guitars on a up tempo shuffle.

The imagery laden, rapped out introductory vocal evokes the song’s urban feel and you can see why it became the title track.

‘Tension City Blues’ the album,  proudly wears its musical influences on its sleeves and with the backing of the guitar friendly Grooveyard records, this album could well make splash in the rock-blues market.

It’s well worth investigating. ****

Quick plays: TUBULAR WORLD, ROBERT REED

TUBULAR WORLD Tubular Bells

TUBULAR WORLD Tubular Bells Tigermoth Records [Release date 14.12.20]

You wonder.  Is there any need for yet another version of ‘Tubular Bells’?  I mean, the masterwork’s creator has fine dined off the back of it for nearly 50 years now, whilst no slouch in the recycle department himself.  All being well, this August will see the latest performance variation, in the shape of a 50th anniversary celebration under the stewardship of Robin A Smith.

This album is like a love letter to Oldfield and his original concept.  It brings together Oldfield Obsessive Rob Reed (Magenta, Kompendium) together with various acolytes such as Steve Hillage (aka double speed guitar), Rick Fenn and Les Penning.  The biggest coup is getting original producer Tom Newman to twiddle the knobs on this version.

This double CD package is slightly confusing, CD2 merely repeats the first disc although this time the various sections are given a title, for example “Latin” or “Thrash” (!), and segmented on the disc.

In truth, I don’t really get this.  But all proceeds go to the mental health charity MIND which maybe is the clincher.  ***

ROBERT REED Cursus 123 430

ROBERT REED Cursus 123 430 Tigermoth Records [Release date 14.11.20]

It seems Robert Reed’s albums slip out regularly but not necessarily with the bigger promotion they deserve.  The latest Chimpan A album for example.  Cursus 123 430 was released in late-2020 but we’ve only just received it being another case in point.

Concept albums with spoken word are always a bit worrying, and no doubt the accompanying graphic novel will help repeated play, although we only received the album.

Les Penning (and Mike Oldfield collaborator) supplies the narrative whilst Reed consciously re-explores the sounds of analogue synthesisers and his eighties influences such as Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream.

And it’s those artists that are the best benchmark for this spacey adventure.  Some will say that it’s perhaps too derivative.  Maybe Reed is losing his Oldfield fixation (q.v) and heading for the widescreen. Alternatively, he may get a job re-scoring Doctor Who.

It’s expansive, immersive and perfectly executed.  The second disc has the ubiquitous 5.1 mix and an interview/video.  ****

Album review: RAY FENWICK – Playing Through The Changes Anthology 1964-2020

Ray Fenwick chatted to Get Ready to ROCK! Radio about his career and the anthology.

RAY FENWICK - Playling Through The Changes Anthology 1964-2020

Lemon Records/Cherry Red [Release date 30.04.21]

Perhaps not the first name to be checked in a conversation about music front runners, British composer/guitarist Fenwick is nonetheless one of its most talented journeymen, in demand with 60 years on the clock.

Factors driving the genesis of this consistently engaging 3-CD compilation are pre-dominated by versatility, capability and peer popularity.  The first two are evidenced by the variety of genres and sheer quality of material covered in this set; the last, because his Zelig-like figure pops up wherever talent is going about its business.  Need play, call Ray.

Eschewing the usual linear timeline sequencing, ‘Playing Through The Changes’ criss-crosses the decades, jumping genres from the off with Ian Gillan Band and The South Coast Ska Stars sandwiching Minute By Minute’s ‘Tijuana Holiday’.

Session and guest appearances with the likes of Gillan, Mike Hurst, Roger Glover, Eddie Hardin’s Wizards Convention, Cozy Powell (a hammering cover of Mason Williams’ ‘Classical Gas’), Bo Diddley and more are complemented by Ray’s time with Spencer Davis Group, Dutch pop psychsters Tee-Set, Forcefield, White Lightning amongst others.

Plenty of his solo material comes to light, including previously unreleased, from 1971 debut ‘Keep America Beautiful, Get A Haircut’ to the present day’s sample from 2020 release ‘Going Large’ and an edit of prog ensemble’s Amorphous Androgynous’ 2021 release ‘We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal’.

Spanning pop, rock, funk, ska, rockabilly, R’n'B, soul, the sixty plus tracks across 3CDs on offer here make for a head-spinning melange that never lulls.  And the package overall is exemplary with extensive and comprehensive booklet notes illustrated by an abundance of period images to satisfy the most demanding fashion sentimentalist.

Before the insidious creep of AI started to determine playlists, radio stations had record libraries from which presenters could pull down content to build their shows.

This release would have been their number one go-to. It’s got everything – and everything is first rate.  ****

Quick plays: BADFINGER, CACTUS

BADFINGER No Matter What Revisiting The Hits

BADFINGER No Matter What Revisiting The Hits
Cleopatra Records [Release date 02.04.21]

Badfinger were one of our greatest pop rock bands with a criminally short life-span, not least due to the sad demise of the band’s two main movers and shakers Tom Evans and Pete Ham.

Since that time Joey Molland (vocals, guitar) has carried the torch for the band whilst also releasing solo works in his own right.

The latest is perhaps long overdue, a collection of the band’s most popular songs performed by Molland with a bunch of rock A-Listers.  Vanilla Fudge’s Mark Stein opens shop with ‘No Matter What’ whilst Rick Wakeman contributes to ‘Come And Get it’.

One of the band’s biggest hits – the George Harrison-produced ‘Day After Day’ – is given empathic treatment by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson with Terry Reid and a string quartet.

‘Without You’ – here performed by a somewhat subdued Todd Rundgren – was a major hit for Harry Nillsson in 1970 but sadly the success of the song contributed to Tom Evans’ suicide in 1983 as he battled for songwriting royalties.  (Rungren, by the way, co-produced the band’s ‘Straight Up’ album).

Straight Up also yielded ‘Suitcase’ (here performed by Sonny Landreth).  One of the highlights of my TV music diet in the early 1970s was Badfinger performing this piece as an extended jam on the regional ITV show ‘Set Of Six’.

It may be said that these Beatle protegees never realised their full potential but now some fifty years later they can be re-evaluated.  If this tribute has us all reaching for the band’s original albums, job done.  ****

Badfinger: reissues (2013)

CACTUS Tightrope

CACTUS Tightrope Cleopatra Records [Release date 02.04.21]

Who would have ever thought that in 2021 we get a new album from hard rockers Cactus?  The band originally formed out of the remnants of Vanilla Fudge – psychedelic heavy rockers of the late 1960s and the original line-up included that band’s Tim Bogert (bass) and Carmine Appice (drums).

Bogert sadly died in January this year but the last man standing Appice is here together with Jim McCarty (on two tracks) and long-term members Jimmy Kunes (vocals) and Randy Pratt (harmonica).

Historically Cactus were a blues-based hard rock band and ‘Tightrope’ is a minor revelation with the band firing on at least three of all four cylinders.  New guitarist and co-producer Paul Warren (Rod Stewart, Richard Marx) adds purpose to songs like ‘Tightrope’, the Zeppelin-esque ‘Primitive Touch’ and ‘Elevation’. There’s even a cover of ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’ whilst ‘Poison In Paradise’ is a tasty slow-blues.  An extended piece – ‘Suite 1 and 2′ – evokes the band’s post-1960s origins and influences.

We have no right to expect a new album from a band with such legendary credentials.  And we certainly might not expect such an impressive update.  ****

Album review: TRUCKER DIABLO – Tail End Of A Hurricane

Self Release [Release date 07.05.21]

Given the past year it feels like we are all at the tail end of a hurricane with a trail of devastation behind us but blue skies up ahead. Who better to take us there then than the big truck fuelled on high octane rock ‘n roll and firing on all cylinders?

If you are looking for an upbeat, full throttle return to heady days of big riffs and sweaty gigs then Trucker Diablo are just the band you need. Tom Harte and the guys have been busy during the lockdown and have produced 13 tracks to help your mental well being and take you to a very happy place.

Opening track ‘BTKOR’ does what it says on the tin, that big truck keeps on rollin’ and it takes no prisoners. Built on a huge riff that steamrollers anything in its path you are left in no doubt that the boys are back and they mean business! ‘I Am Still Alive’ is a joyous tune that will have you singing along with a smile on your face. Big melodies and even bigger choruses are the order of the day and the guys deliver by the lorry load.

Anyone of a certain age (guilty as charged) will relate to the next track ‘Rock Kids Of The 80’s’. With a trail back through some of the bands and tracks of the decade’ it will have even the most hardened harking back with misty eyed reminiscence. This song is also set to be a live favourite with a good opportunity for a bit of crowd participation.

‘Don’t Hold On To Hate’ and ‘Set The Night On Fire’ continue the hard rocking soundtrack with excellent guitar work from Tom and Simon Haddock. The album title track then blows in and takes us on a whirlwind trip including a full-on mid-section complete with a great guitar solo.

The lyrics of ‘Insects’ cleverly cover the subject of feeling isolated, alone and the curse of (anti)social media. The refrain of ‘it’s ok not to be ok’ is a strong message to get out there, especially in the current climate, and the guys do an admirable job here.

The pace slows a bit on ‘The Edge Of Tonight’ before the brakes are further applied for the opening of ‘The Trade’. The pressure is quickly reapplied to the accelerator though and the riffs are soon back to cruising speed. ‘Burning Heart’ then rocks solidly on a base of drums and bass provided by Terry Crawford and Tim McGurk respectively.

The big truck then pulls a bit of a DeLorean ‘Back To The Future’ move which transports us back to the late 60’s with ‘Woodstock To Vietnam’. This track looks at the different perspectives of American teenage life during that period from the viewpoint of two friends whose lives took very different paths.

‘Slow Dance’ lightens the mood again with its straightforward rock before we are taken on a final journey to the coast, or possibly beyond, with ‘Bury The Ocean’. The riffs on this one are like relentless waves pounding the shoreline as the hurricane hits shore and takes you on one hell of a ride.

Trucker Diablo have used their lockdown time well and have produced an album that is uplifting and hard rocking in equal measure. The band’s previous albums have shown that their love of harmony and melody coupled with huge riffs is a winning formula and here they have captured the spirit that has prevailed over the past year into 13 tracks.

‘The Big Truck Keeps On Rolling’ should be a metaphor for the resilience of society in the face of the pandemic and this juggernaut shows no signs of stopping!  *****

Album review: PHIL VINCENT – Stigmata

PHIL VINCENT - Stigmata

Bandcamp [Release date 26.05.21]

Solo album number 23 from Phil Vincent and like last year’s ‘Yesterday, Tomorrow & Today’ he is joined by guitarist Vince O’Regan and Janne Stark guests on ‘So Tired’, with Jacob Hansen once again in the producer’s chair. One new name in the musical credits is drummer Max Piccolo.

Phil Vincent has delved into his main musical inspirations for this album, from the progressive leanings of ‘My Darkness’, through to the melodic rocker ‘Time’ and ‘My Life’, which is a tad more guitar led and metal in sound.

‘Hideaway’ is another good, solid rocker and would be a single, if such things had a chance to chart. The ballad ‘So Tired’ features a tasty guitar solo from Janne Stark.

The choice of cover of the Beatles classic ‘Eleanor Rigby’ is a good one, as not only are they the main musical heroes of Phil Vincent, but he creates an intriguing take on it. Building from a quite keys/vocal intro by the song’s end we’ve gone full kitchen sink and have guitars, drums and keys ensuring he gives the song his own personal stamp.

One of his best releases in recent times (which is no mean feat considering the amount of music he appears and works on!), focussing more on his melodic hard rock side and a little less metal.  ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

Phil Vincent took the time to update us on what he has planned next and the making of the ‘Stigmata’ album…

‘Stigmata’ is your 23rd solo album! What keeps you motivated composition wise?

Just look around Jason. There’s more than enough inspiration to write songs. :)

The new album showcases your more melodic hard rock side of your music. Was this a planned move or one that happened as you wrote and recorded the album?

My solo albums tend to drift toward the more melodic rock. Probably because I write on the piano for most of my solo albums. Occasionally I write on the guitar but the songs initial ideas were created on piano. They have more of a Boston, Foreigner and Styx influence as opposed to TRAGIK, and D’Ercole, which lean in the Judas Priest, Black Sabbath riff-dominated arena.

Once again you are working with Vince O’Regan. What is it that makes your musical partnership such a success do you think?

AVince and I connect on a musical level and he knows what I like and he plays for the song. He’s an unbelievable guitarist and songwriter in his own rite so he knows what sounds good in the context of the song. He also works very fast, like me. J

Great version of the Beatles classic ‘Eleanor Rigby’ on the album. It has a very poignant chorus given the lockdowns people have been under this past year or so. What made you want to cover this particular song?

That’s the answer to your first question :) Look around and you will see all the lonely people. It was an obvious choice for me. The video also captures the loneliness aspect of the song. It’s such a sad song. I wanted to make a rocking version but keep it as close to the original melody as possible. Jacob Hansen, who mastered the album, told me it was the best cover he’s ever heard so that relieved any doubts I had of putting it on the album.

The Beatles were/are the greatest band in the world so covering any of their vast catalogue is always a challenge because you will never create a better version of the original masterpiece. You’re only trying to make something that’s heard in a different way. In the past, I’ve covered “And I Love Her” and “Oh Darling!” Those are available as digital only singles. Those versions are completely different than the original songs but the melody is very faithful.

Are you tempted at all to revisit your early solo albums to give them a modern production make over? Would your current record label Rock Company possibly look to release a ‘best of’ of your work, both solo and in bands?

I don’t think “Best of” compilations are necessary in today’s Spotify/digital world. Everyone makes their own playlist. I do re-record some of my older songs and put them on various new releases. “Stigmata” includes a song called “My Life”, which was originally released on my solo album “Tragic” back in 2000. If you listen to the lyrics in the chorus, they’re VERY descriptive of today’s events and environment so I couldn’t resist re-recording it. Although I didn’t use any keyboards in this version, and I wrote different verses, “My Life” represents the life of anyone existing in today’s current climate. It’s amazing a song 21 years old could still be relevant today.

We’ve had a D’Ercole album already this year, now this rather good solo album, so what have you got planned musically for the rest of the year?

We’re 4 songs into the next TRAGIK album, which has the working title “Ultima Ratio” which is Latin for “last resort”.

Obviously there’s a darker tone to the Tragik albums whereas the D’Ercole releases are an amalgam of both my solo albums and Tragik. It should be very interesting.

Anything else to add and message for your fans…

This solo album is the first to include drummer Max Piccolo who has been a friend of mine since high school. He’s always been resisting my invitations to record together but when Dirk Phillips told me he wasn’t available I begged Max to help out and I’m so glad he did. I think he added a little fire to the songs :) I hope people enjoy the album and I want to thank you, Jason for all the support. This genre of music can only exist with that kind of support and it’s because of people like you that I exist musically. So thank you from the bottom of my heart :)

Quick plays: KATE VARGAS, TRICK OR TREAT, CRAIG CARDIFF

kate vargas for the wolfish & wandering

KATE VARGAS For the Wolfish & Wandering Bad Reputation

This is Kate Vargas’s third album, released last year, and she has recently launched a Crowdfunding campaign to finance her next album. Her press bio has her down as a reformed wild child, now more into yoga and making music.

Pick of the album is the plaintive ‘November’ that closes the album and ‘Come Join The Show’, which features mesmerising percussion throughout. Her vocals take some plays to get used to. They are fine on the slower numbers but not appealing to this listener on some of the more upbeat songs.

It has its moments, however, it lacks any truly memorable songs and it does need that certain something to help her stand out of the musical crowd. ***

Alessandro “Alle” Conti (he also fronts Twilight Force and designed the album’s artwork!) has the perfect vocals for Trick Or Treat’s brand of melody friendly, Euro metal. Be it on the operatic refrains of ‘Dragonborn – Skyrim’ or the galloping power metal of ‘Human Drama (Down Into Pain)’.

For fans there is the band’s 2004 demo ‘Like Donald Duck’ (maybe not their finest moment!), a live version of ‘I’m Alive’ and a cover of the Misfits ‘Scream’, power metal style.

The band have possibly been hindered from being more well known in power metal circles as they have been on a variety of record labels, although hopefully Scarlet Records will be able to get their name and music known more. Certainly enough on here to keep the band’s fans entertained until their new album is unleashed. ***1/2

CRAIG CARDIFF All This Time Running

CRAIG CARDIFF All This Time Running True North Records [Release date 14.05.21]

‘While All This Time Running’ is his first album of new material in six years, Craig Cardiff has independently released a staggering total of 25 albums and EPs since his debut release in 1997. Not a name I had come across before, however, he has won a number of awards in his native Canada. Indeed the first single, ‘Yellowknife’, has already received a nomination for Canadian Folk Music Award for Single of the Year.

‘Emm & May’ and ‘Decorated’ tread a path not a million miles away from Hootie & the Blowfish, whilst ‘Wyoming’ is one of those songs that is a delight to hear first time and on each subsequent play. Cardiff’s soothing vocals hit the spot on this one.

In addition to the album’s eleven songs there are six bonus songs, including a cover of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Don’t Give Up’. To be fair it is possibly the weakest song on here as he sings both vocal parts and a duet with a female singer would have suited it better. Still at least he has made his own version of the song. ‘Moon (Big Band Version)’ more than makes up for that though, making for an uplifting and stirring end to the album.

Another fine Canadian musical export and this album is perfect for that evening wind down listen. ***1/2

Album review: JR HARBIDGE – Long Black River

JR HARBIDGE – Long Black River

www.jrharbidge.com/home [Release date 30.04.21]

Black Country based J.R. Harbidge releases his second album ‘Long Black River’, from which three singles have already dropped — ‘Wrong Side of The Fight’, ‘Break the Spell’ and ‘Sunshine Not Rain’.

“My new album,” says JRH, “is full of melody and memorable melodies, but beneath all the things that catch your ear you’ll find songs steeped in real life.” He goes on to say “It is also a great musical reflection of the times, we find ourselves in. Honest, deep, and straight from the soul.”

Sounds wise JR Harbidge straddles folk, country/Americana and the classic 70’s West Coast sounds of the likes of Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Eagles – particularly on ‘Break The Spell’. This song features wonderful vocal harmonies (all performed and arranged by Harbidge himself), added to the soothing, melodic singing of JR Harbidge.

‘We Don’t Talk About It’ tells a desperate narrative of family tragedy, yet the harmonies and music lift the mood. The Thorns come to mind on this one. He goes down a more traditional country road on ‘You Saved Me Twice’, with a neat bit of electric guitar playing from Nick Clark.

Special mention to the organ and piano playing of Pete Larkin who really adds that special something to each of the songs on here, be it the organ on ‘Side By Side’ (inspired by the war poet Martin Niemöller and based on his experience of the Holocaust) or the gentle piano on ‘We Don’t Talk About It’.

Another possible single could be the jaunty ‘When The Sun Doesn’t Shine’. It could easily be a Fleetwood Mac tune from the 70s or Bob Seger (albeit with a smoother vocal!).

What a wonderful album for the listener to immerse themselves in, from the clear production through to the 70s vibe on some of the music, JR Harbidge is one talented performer. ****

Album review: LYNYRD SKYNYRD – Live at Knebworth ‘76

Lynyrd Skynyrd “Live at Knebworth ‘76”

Eagle Rock Entertainment [Release date  .21]

“Live at Knebworth ‘76” is the recently released live film and soundtrack from legendary Southern rock royalty Lynyrd Skynyrd. Whilst clips have been released from the film over the years, most notably in the 1996 “Freebird.. The Movie”, this new edition is like watching, and listening to, a different gig. Now available in its entirety, and nicely restored, this is well worth the wait.

On August 21st 1976, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic line-up were part of a bill headlined by an in form Rolling Stones, rumour had it that this was to be the bands final gig and so the official crowd number may have been 120.000 but estimates put the crowd at anywhere between that and 300,000 on the day.

Skynyrd were immense that day, I doubt many bands would have wanted to follow them onstage, and it is fair to say that they blew the Stones away that afternoon.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s story is a well told one and it is hard to imagine what would have followed for the band had the tragedy of the following year not have unfolded, no doubt the band would have been a stadium act in the same way as the Stones and Aerosmith.

But back to 1976 and a field in Hertfordshire, where Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle and Billy Powell run through an eleven song setlist that reads like a greatest hits collection.

Watching this line up perform the likes of “Gimme Three Steps”, “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Saturday Night Special” and “Freebird” just feels right and I am sure that there is not one person reading this that needs me to tell them how good these songs sound.

“Live at Knebworth ‘76” is available in several formats, my favourite being the double vinyl where “Freebird” takes up the whole of side D. The Blu-ray includes the bonus 2018 documentary “If I Leave Here Tomorrow: A Film About Lynyrd Skynyrd”, which is an in depth look at the music and history of Lynyrd Skynryd. This release is one for the collection of all fans of the band.  *****

Album review: SENTON BOMBS – Aerial Threat

SENTON BOMBS - Aerial Threat

Regolith Records [Release date 27.03.21]

Blackpool’s Senton Bombs have recently unleashed their sixth album “Aerial Threat”, a tasty blend of punk, blues and rock, with the odd country twinge, and it follows up 2018’s “Outsiders” nicely.

Of the fourteen tracks on “Aerial Threat” five have already been released as singles, this may seem quite a lot but it’s not too out of place these days. The album does have a feeling of two parts for me, ranging from the sleazy punk edged “High School Low” to “Sin On My Mind”, which almost has an early 90’s Manchester feel to it. Then we get the finely paired “Cheats Prosper” and “Rise of the Underdogs”, which musically have a slight air of Hanoi Rocks to them, at least musically.

“Be What You Want” is nice and sleazy but when you compare the vocal to that on “Lake” or “Coaster” they are miles apart and this adds to the albums slight split feel. That said, the level of musicianship throughout the album is superb and that is part of what makes this band such a popular live draw.

The remaining highlights on “Aerial Threat”, for me, are the opening rally of “Blue Sunset”, “Storm The Castle” and “English Dreams”, but as with it’s predecessor, this is an album that is easy to listen to and gets better with every listen. ****

Album review: ALICE COOPER – Three Temptations From Alice

Alice

Floating World [Release date 11.6.21]

With Alice Cooper’s new album “Detroit Stories” garnering plenty of media attention, this timely 2CD set collects his three Epic label albums which were originally released between 1989 and 1994.

For “Trash” he teamed up with crack producer Desmond Child, fresh from success with the likes of Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Kiss. Child co-writes all bar one of the tracks here, and they don’t come any better than the opener – the classic smash hit single ‘Poison’, a song that truly resurrected Cooper’s career and reached the lofty heights of #2 in the UK singles chart (#7 in the US).

Featuring a star-studded rota of guest musicians, including Jon Bon Jovi, Steven Tyler and Steve Lukather, the quality control is high. There are fiery rockers (‘Spark In The Dark’, the catchy ‘House Of Fire’, ‘This Maniac’s In Love With You’, ‘Trash’) as well as a couple of slower-paced tracks (‘Only My Heart Talkin’’ and ‘Hell’s Living Without You’). Another standout is ‘Bed Of Nails’, which contains more than a whiff of Bon Jovi’s ‘You Give Love A Bad Name’.

Cooper followed “Trash” with 1991’s “Hey Stoopid”, which was produced by Peter Collins (previous credits Rush, Queensrÿche). Guests this time include Ozzy Osbourne, Joe Satriani, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, Slash and Stevie Vai.

The title track is a killer opener and sets the tone for another strong album. ‘Feed My Frankenstein’ (co-written by Zodiac Mindwarp) was later featured in Wayne’s World and remains a perennial Halloween favourite! ‘Love’s A Loaded Gun’ has a classic feel, ‘Might As Well Be On Mars’ is a well-crafted cut, and the riff-tastic “Hurricane Years” blasts the cobwebs away! The reflective ‘Die For You’ was co-written with Sixx and Mars, while ‘Windup Toy’ is a wacky closer.

1994’s “The Last Temptation” was Cooper’s first concept album since 1983’s “DaDa”. The album deals with issues of faith, temptation, alienation and the frustrations of modern life. It centres on a boy named Steven (also the name of the protagonist in Cooper’s 1975 work, “Welcome to My Nightmare”) and a mysterious showman.

The album once again features collaborations with some high-profile guests: Chris Cornell of Soundgarden co-wrote and sings on two songs (‘Stolen Prayer’ is superb), Dan Wexler of Icon co-wrote four songs, and Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater plays keyboards.

Kicking off with the groovy and melodic ‘Sideshow’, it’s immediately obvious that this is very different from the rock/metal sound of the previous two albums. Andy Wallace and Don Fleming are on production duties this time and it’s a diverse mixture of styles. ‘Lost In America’ is Beastie Boys meets The Stooges, ‘You’re My Temptation’ is dark and menacing, while ‘It’s Me’ is a beautiful melodic ballad – a very rewarding listen overall.

“Three Temptations…” is a neat way to pick up these albums in a value for money package. The 12-page booklet contains biographical notes by Alan Robinson, original album artwork and credits. ****

Album review: FALSE MEMORIES – The Last Night Of Fall

Frontiers [Release date 07.05.21]

Guitarist, Francesco Savino founded False Memories in 2015, but it was only when he recruited vocalist, Rossella Moscatelli in 2018 that the band’s career gained some momentum.

Subsequently, they were one of a mere handful of bands selected via a Frontiers’ scouting initiative, from many hundreds of entrants.
You can see why.

The label describes it as Gothic / Doom metal. They got the first half right. It’s no more Doom Metal than say, Cheap Trick. But the Gothic is perfectly formed and all the songs on the album gain real weight from a strong melancholy undertow.

There are shades of Nightwish and Within Temptation here, in the way that False Memories weave elements of Symphonic (and to some extent, Power Metal) into the fabric of their music. It’s a very attractive combination of sub genres, seductive even, more especially when you consider the strength of the songwriting.

Moscatelli’s expressive, beautifully controlled mezzo soprano, one moment whispering an intimate lyric, the next holding hands with a big dramatic chorus, is the band’s weapon of mass persuasion. She uses it to great effect on ‘Rain Of Souls’ and ‘White Crows’. Both songs take a while to establish a handhold, but when they do, they hang on with the grip of a drowning man.

Having shrugged off the ‘Doom Metal’ claim, we find that ‘Hysteria’, ‘Voices’ and ‘Unfaithful Dream’ all flirt, somewhat guiltily, with the genre, creating frissons of danger from dissonant notes – you can feel the agitation and the discomfort. Though playing some sinister “public service announcement” in the background is yesterday’s thinking.

The album’s most accessible tracks, ‘Black Shades’ and ‘The Illusionist’ each carry a weight of emotion. The lyrics – grappling with the human condition – burn with intensity. In fact most songs on the album, to a lesser or greater extent are energised, if that’s the right word, by the soul sucking twilight zone that we seemed to inhabit during the tightest lockdowns.

A sense of sameness creeps in occasionally . . . it’s hard putting an upbeat, positive spin on life challenging circumstances.

Still, maybe that’s what Gothic Metal is all about. ***1/2

Album review: THE COSMIC TRIP ADVISORS – Wrong Again Albert (2 CDs)

THE COSMIC TRIP ADVISORS - Wrong Again Albert

Bad Reputation France [Release date 09.04.21]

Here’s an interesting tale to tell. Rock band, The Cosmic Trip Advisors fly from native Scotland to a “fancy ass” studio in Sweden to record an album, to be done in double quick time. The band are not young whippersnappers, they are (ahem) well worn experienced musicians.

They want to release it on vinyl, so the next step is to convince 90 of their fans to stump up £20 for an advance order (in fact to order several months in advance), and they offer various inducements such as a hand numbered signed copy or even a namecheck credit on the album cover. This is how it is in COVID life 2020.

Well, happily they managed to sell out the first vinyl production run of 500, and subsequently another run thereafter. It keeps selling ! Just then a long forgotten rehearsal tape was re-discovered, and the idea ignited to release it as a double CD, the original together with this live run through where the red record button was on “play”.

The band describe it as what it would have sounded like at a keg party done in one hour, six months later – ie no second takes, no cheats, no overdubs.

Put an album cover together with a beautiful Tanya Shatseva painting and “bingo” !

And if you like that heavy rock Hammond based sound, with more than a tinge of Vanilla Fudge era type psychedelia, this could be for you.

“Shy and Retiring” vocalist Lesley McGonnal is very remisicent of Debbie Bonham, and that’s a compliment ! Debbie Bonham (John’s sister) fronts a similarly heavy ass kicking sound.

The Cosmic Trip advisors are a very good band (a great live experience too). Prior to this album it’s well worth checking out their covers of Blind Faith’s ‘Can’t Find My Way Home’ and Merle Haggard’s ‘Sing Me Back Home’.

You won’t find 1M views for any of their online content. In fact you won’t find more than 300 sometimes, but if you’re a sucker for that classic rock organ-based sound give it a try ! ***1/2

Book review: Decades – Focus in the 1970s (Stephen Lambe)

Decades - Focus in the 1970s (Stephen Lambe)

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 30.04.21]

At the outset I should declare an interest.  As an inveterate Focus-watcher since the early 1970s, author of articles about the band for Record Collector magazine, liner notes, and the first book about Jan Akkerman and Focus, I may understandably have a jaundiced view.

Stephen Lambe’s latest expose of the Dutch rockers may have been better placed in his “On Track” series as the core of the book involves the breakdown track-by-track of the various album constituents.  Consequently it is fairly close-focused (!) and highly subjective.

For me Lambe’s biggest crime is to denigrate the intrinsic merits of ‘Anonymus II’ the long track that filled nearly two sides of the original vinyl.  It remains a highlight of the band’s third album. Fellow Focus watcher and writer Colin Harper describes it as “progressive-rock from 17th century Burgundy that somehow feels as if it’s being performed in a Roman amphitheatre”.  Lambe even goes so far as to wax lyrical on the re-sequencing to fashion a single rather than double album.  It all fits nicely on a CD so what’s the problem?

Similarly I think the author is quite harsh on Van Leer’s solo albums in the Introspection series.  Yes they are a little of their time but they sold well, especially the first one, and are easy on the ear renditions of the classics and popular tunes.  Of course, their success detracted from Focus and irritated Akkerman.  But we don’t hear that in this account.

Lambe has relied far too heavily on Peet Johnson’s internet published account of the band which has been discredited in some circles and, similarly, he has taken much from self-styled “archivist” Wouter Bessels who has been responsible for recent remastered album collections.

Lambe doesn’t offer much on the personal dynamics of the main movers and shakers which is part of the band’s fascinating history.  But why on earth didn’t he at least try and get to the source?  Van Leer is both friendly, articulate and with good recall.  Therefore this volume is not as credible as others in the series, such as the recent Alice Cooper tome.

But even the use of secondary sources is poor. There is a fair amount of supposition in the narrative (“allegedly”, “probably unfounded”, “there are suggestions” and “in various accounts”) when the story is out there.

As far as the track by track goes maybe a professional musician would have coped better describing essentially instrumental music, but here Lambe fails to give the full background to one of the classic tracks ‘House Of The King’ or mention that the first Focus tune (which spawned an ongoing series) was inspired by Schubert.

Again the full origins of that other classic ‘Hocus Pocus’ are not revealed, there’s no reference to the band making fun of themselves as they developed a piece that contrasted with their usual serious nature.  And surely Lambe should have a copy of technically the first Focus album when they were the pit band in the Amsterdam version of ‘Hair’?

When I wrote an unofficial account of Jan Akkerman and Focus in 2003 I had chatted extensively to Focus’ long-term manager in the seventies Yde de Jong.  I found him an extremely articulate and helpful source who confirmed the real reason for the band’s “no show” at the Lincoln Festival in 1972.  None of that is here.

Lambe plays down the influence of the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test (and indeed Bob Harris) in promoting the band’s music but after their appearance in December 1972 the Polydor presses were working at full pelt ensuring ‘Sylvia’ was a major hit.

There is no reference to an alternate USA mix of the album ‘Hamburger Concerto’ or the influence of FM Radio on the band during successive US tours.

The author is slightly dismissive of  ‘At The Rainbow’ (preferring the earlier BBC In Concert) but fails to mention that the reason Akkerman’s guitar went out of tune (on ‘Answers? Questions!) is because the guitarist lost his fine tuner and spent some time in the darkness reattaching to his guitar.

He also fails to mention there was an unreleased quadrophonic mix of the album or that Akkerman played lute during the encore (omitted from both the TV film and album).  Also, the TV film was actually speeded up slightly to synch with the audio tracks as for technical reasons it wasn’t possible to use the original soundtrack.

Similarly, on Akkerman’s 1978 live album recorded at Montreux,  he dropped his guitar when the strap broke but the crash was edited out between ‘Tommy’ and ‘Azimuth’.  This is all trivia but worthy of inclusion in a book like this.

Lambe does take the story forward to 1985 when our main protagonists got together for a reunion album and there is a brief updating for the band in the millennium.

The book is illustrated with the usual screen grabs and album covers but perhaps more interesting would have been a survey of the various European releases, especially picture sleeve singles which we didn’t get here in the UK.  And the “off the shelf” illustration of the 1976 live album (released in 2004) was actually taken from a contemporary tour poster/advert.

Any book about Focus is welcome but this offering is unlikely to really satiate hardcore followers and – for the jaundiced – equally disappointing. ***
