EP review: THE JAILBIRDS – Jungle

THE JAILBIRDS - Jungle

Golden Robot Records [Release date 21.05.21]

Now this is a Canadian three piece called the Jailbirds, not the Aussie/Irish Jailbirds who have a penchant for AC/DC riffs, which could explain why on first listen I thought they had undergone a radical change in musical direction!

This Jailbirds features vocalist/guitarist Myke Penney, bass player Liam Hills, and drummer Eric Parent. The band have been around for a few years now and ‘Jungle’ is their second EP.

The EP is a concept piece, the idea being that song by song the listener learns the story of a person battling self and substance, constantly shifting in their resolve to overcome their depressive and anxious mind.

‘Dull My Brain’ and the title track recall Alter Bridge, mostly in the vocals of Myke Penney. ‘All I Need’ is a no nonsense rocker with the guitar solo of the EP on it for added measure. ‘Watery Grave’ has a neat almost stoner rock riff to it, whilst the final track on the EP, ‘I Will Move On’ with its harmony filled verses and whiff of early 70s rock, brings to mind fellow Canadians the Tea Party.

The Jailbirds tackle the subjects of depression, anxiety and drugs by creating some memorable tunes. One foot in the modern rock camp, the other drawing on the classic hard rock riffs. The Jailbirds impress greatly on this showing. ***1/2
