Album review: SCARDUST – Strangers

SCARDUST - Strangers

M-Theory Audio [Release date 30.11.20]

Progressive Rock’s most famous unknown band, Scardust, released their second album, Strangers, to widespread critical acclaim in November last year. It was an unauspicious time to be releasing new product. Consequently, the label has “re-released” the album this month, clearly hoping to build commercial success on the back of an uninterrupted series of glowing reviews.

The sheer breadth and width of the music and lyrics – written by vocalist Noa Gruman and unofficial member, Orr Didi – pushes “progrock” beyond conventional boundaries. This is a “Tales of the Estranged” album, where events unfold as told by each side of the “Strangers’” story, with each chapter painted from a musical palette filled with classical colours and hard rock textures.

Guitars, bass, keys, a string quartet and a spectral choir take us worryingly close to symphonic sensory overload at times, but Gruman’s soaring vocals act as our guide … follow me and you’ll be just fine. As concepts go, this one has stamina.

Melodies come and go, some hit you between the eyes, others orbit in ever decreasing circles, negotiating slick (sometimes dizzying) time changes, eventually to crashland in your subconscious.

To pick a standout track from an album of standout tracks is impossible, but . . .

‘Break The Ice’ and ‘Addicted’ are sweet triumphs of invention and a lot of daring. We’ve heard these ingredients before, well used by Progrock bands, but not assembled in exactly this manner. These arrangements push the word ‘inventive’ to breaking point. And at times, in parts, songs like ‘Tantibus 2′ and ‘Under’ recall ELP in content and execution.

There isn’t a dull moment, and there are some truly great ones. And the fact that several tracks, like ‘Concrete Cages’ and ‘Over’, take time to reveal themselves is no accident – the effort required to get there is part of the payoff.

At a point in time when superlatives have been devalued by overuse, it’s no exaggeration to say that Strangers, the album is immense – an extraordinarily rich, intoxicating, complex mix of progressive rock styles and sources. If this one doesn’t do it, nothing will. ****1/2

Album review: NINEBARROW – A Pocket Full Of Acorns

NINEBARROW – A Pocket Full Of Acorns

www.ninebarrow.co.uk [Release date 05.03.21]

Ninebarrow – the duo of Jon Whitley and Jay LaBouchardiere – were planning to carry on their impressive and relentless series of gigs up and down the country last year. Of course the pandemic put paid to that, but then Ninebarrow are inventive chaps performing a series of high quality streamed gigs, producing a series of walking guides around their native Dorset and releasing the delightful charity single ‘The Hour of the Blackbird’, that featured two choirs. It just shows that you can adapt your music to the times we live in, albeit performing live in front of an audience is a big miss for musicians and fans alike.

Ninebarrow are joined by their band again – Lee Mackenzie (cello), John Parker (percussion) and John Parker (double bass), with Mark Tucker again producing as he did on 2018’s ‘The Waters & The Wild’.

Opener ‘Come January’ perfectly encapsulates Ninebarrow’s sound, an original composition that highlights the way Jon and Jay’s vocals complement each other.

The great thing about folk music is that is can recall the past, be it by reinterpreting folk standards or basing new songs on the past, and comment on the present day, as ‘Under the Fence’ does. This song is based on the duo watching a documentary on one of the refugee camps in Calais. Thought provoking, subtly done and even though a new song, it owes some of its creation to an older song, ‘Cold, Haily, Windy Night’.

The full band sound can be heard on ‘Cry Unity’ – Ninebarrow at their rockiest! The percussion and double bass give this song that extra ‘oomph’ and certainly one for future live sets.

The current popularity of sea shanties should see extra interest in ‘Farewell Shanty’. With Ninebarrow you keep coming back to their vocal prowess and that is ably illustrated on this shanty.

Ninebarrow are adept at giving their own musical spin on folk standards, none more so than on ‘Hey John Barleycorn’. A jaunty number, again one that will become a firm live favourite. John Barleycorn is a personification of the barley crop and he lays down his life each harvest to make…beer!

‘Sailors All’ completes the album in a gentle but memorable way, where the duo’s sublime vocals take centre stage backed by the piano playing of Jon.

The album comes with a wonderfully illustrated and laid out lyric booklet, giving not only the lyrics but the stories behind each song. It really is little touches like this that set this band apart from many of their contempories.

Ninebarrow keep on going from strength to strength and this album is likely to be seen as their best to date, no mean feat given the strength of their previous three albums. A folk album of the year, and indeed any year. ****1/2

Album review : KREEK – Kreek

KREEK - Kreek

Frontiers [Release date 12.02.21]

Debut album from Kreek, a new band built around ex Bigfoot vocalist, Antony Ellis. It’s produced by Night By Night & Passion vocalist/guitarist, Dan Rosall.

It’s surprising that this one got past Frontiers generally on-the-ball quality control team. Maybe they were isolating somewhere. Or maybe it’s just that the first 4 tracks were rushed to meet a label deadline.

That aside, what’s most directly striking is Ellis’s vocal resemblance to Steve Augeri and Danny Vaughn. He fits neatly between the two in singing style and vocal timbre. Is that a good thing? Well, its familiarity will gain an immediate audience, but perhaps its lack of originality will deter the discerning listener.

On those first 4 tracks his voice is full of kinetic energy but little direction. In places the vocal harmonies are off and it doesn’t help that the songs sound incomplete, half formed, in need of a major makeover.

Then we get to ‘One Voice’. It seems totally different – band, producer, arranger, songwriter. All of the above. Who knows, maybe the song’s narrative, tackling the thorny subjects of guilt and resolve, raised their game. It finds an immediate groove and locks in tight. It has drive and purpose. Its densely packed harmony vocals have a Siagon Kick, and Nick Clark’s razoring solo axework in the middle section neatly twins up on an oriental vibe. It’s a compelling piece.

‘Man On My Shoulder’ and ‘Stand Together’ continue in that vein. Both lighter in dramatic weight perhaps, but both are lyrically and musically strong, and are happy to dish out bruising, ironclad rock’n'roll, with not too little charm, and a degree of originality.

They up the ante even more with the last 3 tracks.

‘Get Up’ is where Ellis sounds best, belting out well written, meat and 2 veg hard rock, with a tantalising hint of glam and metal glinting in the chorus. It’s tense, taut and unshowy. By keeping a tight rein on the sweaty, smouldering ‘Down’n'Dirty’, they make the same statement, keeping a firm grip of the escalating emotions, as the heat builds and the steam rises.

Inevitably, they close with a ballad (we were getting worried there), the very ungentlemanly titled “Girl, You’re On Your Own’. It’s a bluesy piece in the vein of Aerosmith or Tesla, powerful and commercial, and Ellis delivers with chest beating conviction. A closer worth waiting for. ***

Album review: JOHN PAUL KEITH – The Rhythm of the City

JOHN PAUL KEITH - The Rhythm of the City

Wild Honey Records [Release date 19.02.21]

The over-riding descriptor of John Paul Keith’s fifth solo album is, “Vintage”. With twelve years’ experience as part of the Memphis music scene, plugging away as a session player and live act, there is a pleasing bluesman authenticity to The Rhythm of the City. Recorded mostly live-to-tape at Electraphonic Studios, the album is awash with classic Stax soul arrangements, electric blues licks and even a hint of Merseybeat swagger. Pleasingly, these throwbacks don’t feel like pretension or self-conscious hipster appropriation, rather John Paul Keith is just an old soul.

Proceedings kick off with ‘How Can You Walk Away’, a moody question posed by a spurned lover. Call and response backing vocals, gospel organ and an echoing guitar solo all work together to provide a confident opener. On ‘Love Love Love’ Keith does his best Buddy Holly impression, to create an effective 50s rock & roll pastiche, with a deceptively simple and catchy melody.

In the album’s press release Keith notes; “Most cities have one sound, but there are many Memphis sounds. I tried to make a record that honors that” and by the third track, the listener understands what he means. ‘The Sun’s Gonna Shine Again’ plays with a different sonic palette again; Al Green style horn-lines (with a hint of electric sitar) adorn this innocent ballad about looking to the future. While ‘The Rhythm of the City’ reveals the extent of John Paul Keith’s musical geekery, a guitar coda that wails on a B.B. King level.

Perhaps most impressive about John Paul Keith’s production approach is the way he takes “a bit of this, a bit of that” travelling across musical eras. Take, ‘Keep On Keep On’ which has the construction of an early Beatles song but imports horn-lines squarely from the Motown era. Frequently Keith inadvertently evokes a British rock & roll act; as a Tennessee native this is probably coincidental, yet the similarities are there. Record standout ‘If I Ever Get the Chance Again’ could easily fit in the repertoire of The Hollies, with a chorus begging for the listener to stick a lighter in the air and sway.

Closing out with slow-burning torch song ‘How Do I Say No’, The Rhythm of The City finds a studious musician that can effortlessly dial into musical history and conjure nostalgia for yesteryear but still sound genuine. ***

Album review: ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN – The Darkest Skies Are The Brightest

ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN - The Darkest Skies Are The Brightest

InsideOut Music [Release date 26.02.21]

There is no doubt that some of the best music is made as a result of emotional adversity.  This explains why we cannot, perhaps, expect any great emotional pull from aged rockers who are more resolved to maximising their back catalogue and topping up their state pensions.  Old rockers tend to be angry, or creatively impotent.

Anneke van Giersbergen is best known as the frontwoman of Dutch metallers The Gathering, whom she left in 2007 for a solo career.  But in 2018 her marriage was on the skids and this has ushered in a particularly emotional, reflective, and heartfelt album.  And it’s beautiful.

It’s never easy for front ladies of metal rockers to strike out on their own.  There’ll either be an expectation of more of the same or a reaction against more diversity.  Tarja has earned cudos for her more classical excursions whilst fans may long for her original Nightwish style, Anette Olzon tried a more mainstream album, (and a really good one), with little success and then went back to a more symphonic/prog metal arrangement.

Giersbergen’s approach here is some way removed from her previous albums.  The opener ‘Agape’ is one of the best love songs I’ve heard for ages, percolated by a lovely string arrangement,  whilst ‘Hurricane’ digests the turmoil in her personal life in the past couple of years.  Not least she was involved with the band Vuur and took some financial risks to further their music on the road.

‘My Promise’ is simply superb, and enhanced as ever by Giersbergen’s alluring vocals, a seemingly Dutch disposition also conveyed by the likes of Delain’s Charlotte Wessels.  This song is again enhanced by an entrancing string section.

A song like ‘I Saw A Car’ is deceptively simple in proposition but is very infectious in execution in a folksy sort of way – as is ‘Keep It Simple’ -  whilst songs like ‘The Soul Knows’,  ‘The End’, and ‘Losing You’ are straight forward out of love songs.

In a week that sees Arlo Parks headlining the Graham Norton and Jools Holland BBC TV shows and touted as the future of music (there’s no accounting for poor, disillusioned taste and at the licence payers’ expense), Anneke shines through.

Many will say that Giersbergen hasn’t really achieved the wider recognition she deserves.  “The Darkest Skies…” may be the album of much more wider acceptance.  Simply lovely.  And for anyone who has loved and lost and loved again.  *****

Album review: THE HOLD STEADY – Open Door Policy

THE HOLD STEADY – Open Door Policy

Thirty Tigers [Release date 19.02.21]

The Hold Steady return to action with eighth album which as vocalist Craig Fin explains – “This album was written and almost entirely recorded before the pandemic started, but the songs and stories explore power, wealth, mental health, technology, capitalism, consumerism, and survival – issues which have compounded in 2020.”

The first single released off the album, ‘Family Farm’, is a typical piano led Hold Steady romp. I mean how can you not like a song that name checks Van Halen’s ‘Eruption’?! ‘Unpleasant Breakfast’ could quite possibly put you off your breakfast when listening to a certain line… The song’s main character works in a haunted hotel and the band provide some suitably spooky backing vocals on the chorus, making it one of the album’s stand outs.

Elsewhere on the album ‘Spices’ allows Craig Finn to weave a tale with the lyrics. One thing you can guarantee with the lyrics on a Hold Steady album is plenty of weird tales, as the aforementioned ‘Spices’ and ‘Lanyards’ highlight.

With Franz Nicolay firmly back in the line-up his piano and keyboard runs light up the music, plus good to have the odd blast of horns now and then to keep the band’s broad soundscape going.

Some bands this far into their musical adventures often run out of steam lyric wise or recycle previous songs, not so the Hold Steady who sound as fresh and enjoyable as they did when they first started out. One of 2021’s ‘must have’ albums. ****

Book review: OFF THE CHARTS by KAT GOLDMAN

Off The Charts

Sutherland House [Publication date 09.02.21]

Canadian singer songwriter Kat Goldman has made four critically acclaimed albums and her songs have been covered by Grammy-nominated band, The Duhks, Dar Williams, among many others. I will be honest I had not heard of her or her music until reading this book, however, I’d heartily recommend giving her albums a listen, especially ‘Great Disappearing Act’ and ‘Working Man’s Blues’.

Now Kat Goldman publishes her first book, part memoir, part self-help guide for would be songwriters and it is great fun, whether you be a musician or music lover. In bite sized chapters (she originally wrote some of this book for a music blog), Kat covers what it’s like to meet your first fan, date a rock star, how to treat a headlining act, the dos and don’ts of promotion, and how to rebuild your career after getting hit by a car in a bagel shop. That later event had a profound effect on her life, although she doesn’t delve too far into her feelings about this. It must have been tough though as she had a broken leg and had to teach herself to walk again.

Quick mention to the original illustrations by Nina Berkson which add to the book’s overall appeal.

One thing you come away with from the book is how much music and songwriting means to Kat, something all us music lovers can admire and be grateful for, as without the performers and songwriters there would be no music and that would be a very sad world to live in.

An easy, quick read that is funny, entertaining and an honest glimpse into the world of the music business. I am pretty sure Kat Goldman has at least another book in her about her music, maybe one about life on the road?

Album review: RADAR – Lost In The Atlantic

RADAR – Lost In The Atlantic

Escape Music [Release date 19.02.21]

Escape Music have a knack of uncovering long lost albums, or in the case of Radar, one that has never had a proper release until now.

Radar was formed in 1981 by David West (keyboards, drum programming), Rod Jordan (vocals, bass) and Gary Stevenson (guitars). They built their own studio, Secret Studios, and the band started recording their debut album in 1985.

In tandem Gary Stevenson was also producing other bands at Secret studios, one of them being the then unknown duo called Go West (Gary also used David West on this project). Go West signed with Chrysalis Records, kept Gary as their producer and went on to win the ‘Best Newcomers’ at the 1985 Brit Awards.

Radar were happy to hold back the release of their album and use the success of Gary’s production works with various bands to promote an upcoming release. Hindsight is a wonderful thing as momentum was lost and the Radar album was never released, until now.

Radar have that distinctive 80’s synth pop sound, unsurprisingly sounding like Go West! ‘The Calling Time’ and ‘Going Overboard’ being prime examples, and on the latter Rod Jordan’s vocals sound a little like Nik Kershaw. That song is one of a couple to feature the sax playing of Mel Collins.

Go West’s Peter Cox appears as a backing vocalist on ‘Olympic Runner’. This song uses various effects – runner’s breathes, crowd noises – to good effect. ‘A Trick Of The Light’ is full of chopping guitar riffs and plenty of synths, recalling Saga in their mid-80’s pomp. ‘The Calling Time’ is another synth led delight and a chance to show off the melodic vocals of Rod Jordan. Sadly it seems he didn’t record much more after Radar, although you can find him on Soundcloud

If you enjoy the 80s synth pop of Go West and Nik Kershaw then this album will be right up your musical street. ***1/2

Album review : GEORGE LYNCH & JEFF PILSON – Heavy Hitters

GEORGE LYNCH & JEFF PILSON - Heavy Hitters

Cleopatra Records [Release date 15.01.21]

Two of Dokken’s original members who left and developed into marquee names themselves are guitarist, George Lynch and bass player/vocalist, Jeff Pilson. The prediction that all rock bands will eventually do a covers’ album might not hold water, but this duo have taken the plunge, and their choice of songs is at minimum, daring, and at most, downright unusual.

Some covers’ albums are recorded to show respect to the original artists, others, like this one, come from a “wish we’d written these, and if we had they’d have sounded like this”. When you’ve paid your dues, you can make this kind of album.

As with most things in life, there’s no substitute for experience. You can hear that loud and clear in the imaginative arrangements and three dimensional production on Heavy Hitters. You can feel it, taste it.

Marq (Bulletboys) Torien handles vocals on a couple of tracks here (most notably tearing up Chaka Khan’s ‘You Got The Love’, freeze framing the funk in a world of bass heavy rhythms and heavy rock hooks), but the bulk of the singing is done by Pilson (a hugely underrated vocalist).

If the duo’s cover of opener, ‘One Of Us’, from Joan Osborne’s mega selling Relish album in 1995 hits home, then you know you’ll like this album. Lynch and Pilson have worked hard here to create a coherent hard rock framing for writer, Eric Bazilian’s typical questioning and intriguing imagery. After you’ve listened to it ten or twenty times, it works. And it sticks.

Some tracks are a little more expansive than the others, and they are unquestionably the standouts. ‘I Feel The Earth Move’: if any song can withstand a hard rock assault upon its classic pop credentials, it’s this Carole King mega hit from 1971. Lynch and Pilson combine as on other tracks, slicing and dicing a sturdy tune, with Lynch’s melodic soloing muscled up by Pilson’s eloquent bass rhythms.

Duran Duran’s ‘Ordinary World’ is a perfect pick. There is already a sense of the epic, the symphonic, in this song, a “ringing brilliance”, (a sound that could’ve been quite easily borrowed from Lennon’s ‘Across The Universe’). The duo emphasise those elements, beefing up the background vocals and adding sympathetic axework.

An equally perfect pick is ‘Its The End Of The World As We Know It And I Feel Fine’.  It’s a true conversion, a magical, musical transformation from rapidfire poprock into a funky, sub-rap monster of a song, with an amazing depth of field. It leaps off the page. A decent pair of headphones and in a few moments you’ll be inside looking out.

There are a couple of worthy runners up. The duo replace the the original dance pop structure of Madonna’s ‘Music’ with a forceful hard rock punch, and light up One Republic’s ‘Apologise’ with Lynch’s jangling guitar and Pilson’s lyrical bass playing.  And let’s be honest, the explosive chorus on Ryan Tedder’s perfectly minted, new millenium pop song would sound great in any company. ****

Album review: ALLY VENABLE – Heart Of Fire

ALLY VENABLE - Heart Of Fire

Ruf Records [Release date 26.02.21 ]

I chatted to Ally when she toured with Blues Caravan in the autumn of 2019 when it was evident she was a sassy, talented performer from Texas.  And very young!  This gig was a showcase for three artists from the Ruf stable and Ally – whilst providing backing band support throughout – promoted her then current album ‘Texas Honey’.

Reviewing that album for GRTR! Pete Feenstra noted that she wasn’t quite the finished article: “an artist teetering on the brink of something new and exciting, but not quite there yet.”

A blues performer heavily influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan breaking out into a more mainstream blues rock.  So in that respect the album was a mix of the old faithful and the newer less tried.

I remember asking Ally which way she would go with her next album, would the rock quotient be increased?  Well, it seems that she’s plumped for more of the same.  Maybe at this early stage of her career she is still very much guided by record label and producer (this time Jim Gaines) and her own leaning towards her blues “roots”.

Alongside tougher rock orientated tracks  ‘Heart Of Fire’, ‘Hard Change’ and ‘Sad Situation’ there is the rootsy ‘Played The Game’, the bluesy ‘Hateful Blues’ and soulful cover of Bill Withers’ ‘Use Me’.  Plus of course the almost inevitable ‘Tribute to SRV’.

But although passionate Ally’s vocals still don’t match the intensity or gravity of the blues rock music she purveys.  They remind me of that UK blues rock journeywoman Chantel McGregor but Chantel cleverly diversified to more pop rock orientated tunes which better suited her vocal range and delivery.  And arguably that approach maximises your potential audience.

This time round Ally has heavyweight assistance from Devon Allman (‘Road To Nowhere’) and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (‘Bring On The Pain’) who both add heft to the proceedings and it perhaps isn’t surprising they are the album’s strongest tracks.

I think it may take a few more albums to achieve the perfectly formed package.  In the meantime, Ally will surely encourage younger interest in the blues which is a really positive thing.  Although it has to be said she will still attract the older crowd (a.k.a. men of a certain age) because she is both foxy and photogenic.  ***1/2

Album review : DURBIN – The Beast Awakens

Frontiers [Release date 12.02.21]

By spinning a fourth place finish on American Idol into 4 solo albums and a stint fronting Quiet Riot, singer/guitarist James Durbin clearly had more than TV celebrity on his side. The Beast Awakens is the next step in his career, and the initial result of a multi album deal recently signed with European Rock and (increasingly) Metal label, Frontiers.

You can often assess the talent and ability of an artist by the musicians who surround him in the studio. Bolstered by veterans of the Malmsteen, Schenker and Y&T wars in heavy metal and hard rock, Durbin expresses his admiration of Judas Priest, DIO, Maiden and other giants of the genre on his Frontiers’ debut, planting both feet firmly in the past.

On the surface, many of the songs seem dramatically simplistic, retreads of dungeons and dragons adventures, of the type that featured in the narratives and themes of so many Heavy Metal albums in the seventies.

Most tracks are dark, derivative, ‘Prince Of Metal’, (mainlining Maiden, cutting it with a Halford howl); ‘Rise To Valhalla’ (Priest signing up with EU Power Metal), and ‘Sacred Mountain’ (Holy Dio), all give you a huge clue of what is contained therein by their titles alone.

In fairness though, there is an exhuberant, thematic style to Durbin’s music. He’s not reinventing the wheel, just polishing it up. He has studied the masters well. With The Beast… he has created a fantasy world into which his listeners can escape.

For all the metal excess, Durbin’s is a finely calibrated performance, and his disquieting, doomful agenda leaves room for genuine progress. ‘Riders On The Wind’ and ‘Calling Out For Midnight’ both search for, and quickly find their groove. Two rock songs with a heavy metal spine, and some impressively melodic moments, cutting against the grain of most of the other material here.

Maybe these two point the way ahead. The genre’s audience of the seventies and eighties thinned out going into the nineties, but that ole’ Heavy Metal train has picked up a lot of passengers as it rolls through the new millenium.

Time for a new hero to arise, perhaps. ***

Album review: INGLORIOUS- We Will Ride

INGLORIOUS- We Will Ride

Frontiers Records [Release Date 12.02.21]

It has been a rocky road for Inglorious since they burst onto the scene as one of the great hopes of classic rock. For a while their huge potential, not least in the powerful vocals of charismatic Nathan James, was held back by some rather average songwriting.

Then their third album ‘Ride To Nowhere’, which attempted to break the mould somewhat, was overshadowed by the ‘Night of the Long Knives’ that saw three of the band members who recorded the album depart in a single day. Despite some successful tours pre-Covid, in many people’s eyes they still have it all to prove and back up Nathan’s hyper-confident persona.

Their fourth album- with a title oddly close to its predecessor- sees several changes. Not only have new members, guitarists Danny DelaCruz and Dan Stevens and bassist Vinnie Colla made their studio debuts, but they have enlisted renowned producer Romesh Gogandoda who has made his name with heavier bands, and the sound moves even further away from the retro bluesy rock of their first two albums.

Album opener and lead off single ‘She Won’t Let You Go’ is an absolute corker, with one of the biggest riffs I have heard in ages, classic but with a more modern twist and more layers and variety in the song compared to their previous work.  ‘Messiah’ is the first true sign of a new approach with a very modern verse including vocal effects which comes as a bit of a shock – though reassuringly Nathan soars into his trademark roar on the chorus backed by a dark and heavy riff.

‘Medusa’ is much closer to the classic rock influences of the old Inglorious with opening slide guitar work worthy of Micky Moody and a chorus which, not only in its title, reminded me a little of Glenn Hughes, but this is very much the exception. ‘Eye Of The Storm’ takes some of Ride to Nowhere’s attempts at a broader sound a stage further, switching between quiet verses that show off Nathan’s soulful voice and a more up tempo chorus with a strong hook.

For the rest of the album, the closest comparison is probably to Alter Bridge, dark and intense and yet melodic, notably on ‘Cruel Intentions’, not immediate but a grower with a fine guitar solo, and ‘We Will Meet Again’, especially with its lyrical message.  ‘My Misery’ goes a stage further with another dark riff and Nathan echoing the anguished tones of Myles Kennedy and to a greater extent on this one, Chris Cornell.

The second half of the album does suffer with less variety than the first few songs, while ‘Do You Like It’ is a little ploddy. However ‘He Will Provide’ is a tantalising mix of more dark riffage with Dio-era Rainbow imagery and a solo worthy of Blackmore, presumably from Danny DelaCruz; and ‘God of War’ boasts a distorted vocal intro but a classic riff underpinning a more traditional chorus, before the title track ends the album with another heavily brooding riff and slow burning hook.

It may not be enough to silence the critics, and may even alienate a few old-school fans. However, helped by a quite superb production, Inglorious have successfully embraced a more contemporary sound and this is perhaps their most impressive work to date. **** 1/4

EP review: TEMPERANCE – Melodies Of Green And Blue

TEMPERANCE - Melodies Of Green And Blue

Napalm Records [Release date 19.02.21]

Italian melodic metal band Temperance have been around since 2013, releasing their latest studio album ‘Viridian’ last year. They also feature three vocalists, namely Alessia Scolletti, Michele Guaitoli and Marco Pastorino (although he is credited normally as ‘clean/harsh vocals’).

Not a band I have heard before and perhaps an acoustic side of the band doesn’t give a full appreciation of their metallic bombast, however, a good song should still sound good no matter what arrangement it is given. Temperance don’t cheat either on the meaning of acoustic as the guitars are all acoustic, as is the percussion and only piano is added on ‘Gaia’.

To be fair, at eight songs it is more an album than EP but it does mean VFM. Means it is worth getting as a fan of the band as well as hopefully bringing them in a few new fans. Six of these songs have appeared on the ‘Viridian’ album, adding two new songs ‘Evelyn’ and ‘Paint The World’. Both of these new songs highlight the band’s vocal talents, ‘Evelyn’ being a nicely paced ballad.

On the other songs that add a little bit of Spanish flair to ‘My Demons Can’t Sleep’ – loving the percussion and maracas on this. ‘I am The Fire’ bounces along, with what sounds like a little bit of a coronet/trumpet solo. Full marks to Temperance for reimaging their songs in acoustic mode and I will certainly be seeking out their other albums.

A pleasant listen, very melodic and the vocals in particular are a highlight of the EP. ***1/2

Album review: JASON BIELER & THE BARON VON BIELSKI ORCHESTRA – Songs For The Apocalypse

JASON BIELER & THE BARON VON BIELSKI ORCHESTRA – Songs For The Apocalypse

Frontiers [Release date 29.01.21]

Jason Bieler scored a winner with hard rockers Saigon Kick (who had a US hit with ‘Love Is On The Way’ in 1991), and since then Jason Bieler has been mixing up styles. Indeed, when asked about the record: “It will NOT be my heaviest record yet, but it will feature a bunch of friends and musicians I love and respect.

It should sound something like if Neurosis got stuck in a blizzard at a Wawa with Supertramp, then Jellyfish showed up and they all decided to do Barry Manilow covers in the style of Meshuggah, but in waltz time with slight country underpinnings, yet accessible for the masses.” So there you go, a veritable potpourri of musical styles to be enjoyed within.

The Baron Von Bielski Orchestra includes many top musicians including Todd La Torre (Queensrÿche), Dave Ellefson (Megadeth), Devin Townsend, Pat Badger (Extreme), Jeff Scott Soto and Bumblefoot (Sons Of Apollo).

After a haunting intro in the form of ‘Never Ending Circle’, the first vocal song arrives ‘Apology’. With Todd La Torre on drums it has a pop melody and vocals over some serious guitar riffs and soloing, courtesy of Andee Balcksugar.

‘Bring Out Your Dead’, despite its title, is an upbeat melodic rocker with an insanely catchy chorus. Devin Townsend and David Ellefson guest on this one. ‘Anthem For Losers’ follows a similar vein, an instant hit on the ears and the use of layered vocals recalls the one album wonders T-Ride.

Skindred’s Benji Webbe guests on ‘Beyond Hope’, adding a nice bit of rap ‘n’ metal to the vocals. The other notable guest vocalist is Jeff Scott Soto on ‘Alone In The World’, another belting melodic pop rocker. Turn this one up!

One of the best songs on the album ‘Very Fine People’ is tucked away at the end of this fifteen song album. Another strong vocal performance from Jason Bieler.

It is way out there musically, yet never disappears up its own musical arse, and every song is rooted in a strong melody. Impressive and more enjoyable on each subsequent play, go on give it a go… ***1/2

Album review: OSIBISA – New Dawn

OSIBISA - New Dawn

Marquee Records/Right Track [Release date: 23.04.21]

I remember Osibisa as that rather colourful outfit who squeezed into the Old Grey Whistle Test TV studio in the early 1970s with their infectious brand of soulful groove.  They purveyed what we would now call world music, a synthesis of west indies calypso, reggae and western funk.  To some, it may have been a synthesis too far but the release of a new album will make re-appraisal almost mandatory.

This is the band’s first new album since 2009′s ‘Osei Yee’.  The mainstays now are now long-standing members Gregg Kofi Brown (guitar, vocals) and Robert Bailey (keyboards) whilst another original – Teddy Osei – has overseeing production credits.

The elements that were present in the 1970s remain and the vibe of ‘New Dawn’  is good-time soul punctuated by a brass section as typified by “Adjuwa Aye (Go With The Flow)” and ‘Douala’.

The band are at their best with the more straight-ahead funk of ‘Paper Dey Burn’ reminding a little of War and ‘No Fit 4 Street’ which has the added bonus of female vocalists (Angie Anderson and Faye Jones).

Other highlights include ‘O Brunye’,  ‘Yo Luv Is Betta’ with Susan Serwah Amoakohene on vocals and ‘Ata Y Che’ which yields the album’s one rock guitar moment.

The spirit of township funk is not far away and present-day Osibisa can still shine a light on darkened times.  Definitely an album to return to when the sun shines and after our arms ache less from successive jabs.  ****

Album review: NICK FLETCHER – Cycles Of Behaviour

NICK FLETCHER - Cycles Of Behaviour

[Release date 26.03.21] www.hacktrax.co.uk

Getting a glowing affirmation from none other that Steve Hackett, printed clearly on your album cover, may give a relatively unknown guitarist a definite leg up.

Nick Fletcher is a member of brother John’s band and this is his first solo “fusion” outing.  He’s known primarily as a classical guitarist but on this album channels his inner Allan Holdsworth.

It’s all very musical and harmonious, nicely orchestrated throughout, and not all instrumental.  With John Hackett performing vocals on three tracks, this makes ‘Cycles Of Behaviour’ even more of a Hackett offshoot than it should be, especially when he also adds the ubiquitous flute.

The long track ‘Philosopher King’ is like David Gilmour c.2006 when ‘On An Island’.  Hardly original but no doubt lapsed proggers will lap it up.

When Fletcher sticks with the instrumentals it’s more impressive and on pieces like the title track and ‘Tyrant And Knave’ he receives excellent support from Dave Bainbridge on Hammond organ (and mellotron!).  ‘Annexation’ is the only track where the band really rock out but somewhat clipped by a long flute intro.  Just get on with it, lads!

This should appeal to followers of the John Hackett Band, but to my ears it’s all a bit too polite and predictable.  ***

Album Review: EXPLORERS CLUB – Rarities Vol 1

Gold Star Recordings [Release date 05.02.21]

Explorers Club dropped two acclaimed new albums last year (To Sing And Be Born Again/Explorers Club).  We reviewed both. In their own way they proved that Sixties Pop is timeless.

Jason Brewer, the band’s retro pop wunderkind, has used that success as motivation to assemble an album of tracks that missed the 2020 cut, titled Rarities, Volume 1.
Why they were discarded is a puzzle. This is a strong, strong album, filled with high calibre outtakes and obscure singles, now dusted down and polished up.

Cleverly, Brewer has constructed the album around 3 key covers. Two of them of infectiously emblematic sixties’ pop hits – ‘Hitchin A Ride’, a joyfully faithful cover of the Vanity Fare 1969 single, from the pen of prolific UK hit writer, Mitch Murray; the second, ‘Stormy’, a no.5 US Billboard hit in 1968 – and the third a cover of a classic Bacharach/ David song, ‘Walk On By’, originally sung by the incomparable Dionne Warwick.

The original material holds up well against these benchmark pop classics… when you’re in exalted company you stretch yourself that little bit further, you push yourself that little bit harder. Head turners, ‘Anticipatin’ and ‘No Good To Cry’ are gutsy pop songs, both brimful of the shiny pop immediacy that Brewer creates in the studio.

But there are half a dozen songs here that even in their quiter moments inspire feelings of joy and love, much in the same manner as Bacharach’s celebratedly evocative material.
The cool, sophisticated ‘Run Run’ and the lazily drifting, ‘Sweet Delights’ are the most obvious, songs graced with complex rhythms, muted brass and tastefully deployed bgvs.
And then the whispered themes of ‘Weight Of The World’, combined with ‘Summer Days’ moodily lyrical nostalgia, present us with a welcome opportunity to return to a warmly inviting, pandemic free world, if only for a few minutes.

Maybe Brewer’s 15 minutes just hasn’t come round yet, but at this rate it must be soon.

Album review: MILTON HIDE – Temperature’s Rising

MILTON HIDE – Temperature’s Rising

www.miltonhide.com [Release date 05.03.21]

Milton Hide emerged out of the East Sussex open mic and folk club circuit five years ago, where the acoustic duo picked up many plaudits for their debut EP, ‘Little Fish’, released in 2018. Now husband and wife duo, Jim and Josie Tipler, are set to release their first full-length album where all the songs on the album are self-penned originals that Milton Hide have performed live over the past few years.

The line-up of musicians appearing on the album are all people the duo have met through playing live including Clare Fowler (Dandelion Charm), Fred Gregory & Phil Jones (Hatful Of Rain), with Dandelion Charm’s John Fowler handling production duties (plus playing guitars, bass, keyboards and drums).

Milton Hide display many sides of their musical background, from the rock with prog leanings of the title track, through to ‘Riding The Whale’, a beautiful song about childhood and playing on the beach.

Hard to pick favourites on such a strong album, however, ‘Buckle Up’ stands out, not only for the melody and singing, but that is was inspired by the true story of Sergeant Paul Meyer of the USAF. Meyer ‘borrowed’ a C130 transport aircraft to fly from England back to his newly-wed wife in Virginia.

‘Say It All The Time’ was released as a charity single in 2019 describing a black mood walk on the South Downs. The subject of depression tackled in an uplifting manner if that makes sense at all?! If ever a folk song had crossover potential to daytime radio it is this one.

‘Something You Don’t See Everyday’ is a social comment on the irony of becoming desensitised to daily horrors served up to us by the mainstream news media and social media, especially during this pandemic. Jim and Josie’s vocals suit each other well, as Josie’s higher harmonies weave well into the singing of Jim.

The album’s final track, ‘Took To Wing (Nightingale)’, sees the album end on a high. The rousing chorus and overall feel/sound of the song recalls Fairport Convention at their best. A wonderful way to finish the album on.

I have enjoyed Milton Hide’s live streaming earlier on in lockdown, as they both love their music and performing it, something that shows upon listening to this delightful and enjoyable debut album. Add in the excellent sound/production work of John Fowler and you have one of this year’s ‘must have’ folk albums. ****

Book review: On track…KATE BUSH, RENAISSANCE, DIRE STRAITS, JONI MITCHELL

On Track...KATE BUSH

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication dates: December 2020; January/February 2021]

The On Track volumes from Sonicbond come thick and fast.  I can’t help thinking that in the rush certain standards are being compromised or, at least, opportunities missed.

Firstly there are a range of authors, some obviously better informed than others and with their own personal take on the subject matter whether it be a more musical interest or from a historical/fan point of view.

At times we get a further reading/bibliography section, from which we can extrapolate from where the author has gleaned their information.  But not always.

As a result the series lacks true consistency.

The illustration section also relies heavily on stock album cover shots and video grabs rather than unique photos and memorabilia which may be of more interest.  And there’s never an index which means these books are less useful as a form of reference. (I’ve been saying that ever since the first titles.  Sorry.)

The strengths and weaknesses are well displayed in the latest batch.  Bill Thomas’ extrapolation of Kate Bush‘s recording career is, as usual for the series, heavily dependent on secondary sources so – for example – in one section we get extensive quotes from an interview appearing in ‘The Word’.  By his own admission Bill has extensively plundered various websites.

There’s nothing wrong with this recycling but it’s a bit lazy and this and previous titles would all benefit from some proper primary research and new interviews.  **1/2

The same applies to David Detmer’s précis of the work of Renaissance charting the progress of the prog rockers from early beginnings, and a different lineup, in 1969 to their more recent incarnations.  Detmer’s book will be more welcome, however, in the sense that here is a band who need to be revered and to many – even prog fans – they’ve remained a little obscure over the years.  ***1/2

Peter Kearns demonstrates the more musician-informed approach in his account of Joni Mitchell.  His previous books in the series have included Elton John and 10cc.  This time the emphasis is on the lyrics as much as the music.  ***1/2

..DIRE STRAITS

Andrew Wild (already with two comprehensive volumes on The Beatles and a recent account of Crosby Stills Nash & Young) now casts his focus on Dire Straits.  The bonus here is that – yes! – seven ex-band members (but not Mark Knopfler) are interviewed.

Of course for a writer it is harder work undertaking original research but Wild demonstrates that it provides a much more credible read as well as better insight.  Perhaps it may even start a trend.  ****

As we’ve suggested before, the On Track books are best approached as an easy read for a journey (if you ever step on public transport again), a book to dip into to confirm suspicions or deflect a dispute  between friends (if you ever step into a pub again).  But maybe they are just perfect for enforced isolation in Lockdown.

Sonicbond also publish more extensive tomes and most recently we have received Andrew Darlington’s excellent account of Beatles PR guru Derek Taylor – For Your Radioactive Children.  We follow the rise and rise of the journalist who collaborated with Brian Epstein on his autobiography and was then introduced to the Fab Four.

Darlington spends some time setting the scene, evoking 1960s Liverpool and its environs and to a lesser extent Los Angeles where Taylor set up his own PR company before hooking up with The Beatles again in the Apple era.  And, yes, there’s no index.  ****

Album review: BLACK SABBATH – Vol.4 Super Deluxe Edition

WIN A COPY!! Competition closes 14.02.21

BLACK SABBATH - Vol.4 Super Deluxe Edition

Sanctuary (5LP) [Release date 12.02.21]

Now here really is a special edition of a genuinely classic album, by one of the original developers of the whole heavy metal genre, Black Sabbath.

Originally a blues band in the late 60s, the Polka Tulk Blues Band (via Earth) morphed into Black Sabbath in late 1969, taking their name (and the eponymous song) from a horror film, and the rest is history.

In them long forgotten early days (or is that daze?) the band were extremely hard working, laying down half an album overnight on 8 tracks en route to a European tour, but they probably didn’t know any different back then.

Their eponymous debut appeared on Friday 13th February 1970, and by 1972, a mere three years, the band had made waves of fans in the UK and USA, had a surprise hit single in Paranoid, toured hard, consumed more alcohol and drugs than most hellraisers do in a lifetime, toured some more, and still found time to release this album, their 4th (hence the imaginative title).

Their doom riff led sound, still with a hint of blues from their roots, defined a genre and could have been considered gods before Birmingham band mates Judas “Metal Gods” Priest had even issued their first album.

Vocalist John “Ozzy” Osbourne, bassist and lyricist Terry “Geezer” Butler, drummer Bill Ward and guitarist and riff meister Tony Iommi had already, by this album’s release, set the template; Volume 4 just rubber stamped it.

So when this package arrived, and postman limped off to his osteopath appointment, one can’t help wonder in glory before you’ve even opened the box.

It’s thick, solid, heavy, has an aura of quality in both manufacture and listening (and, as it turns out, reading). The box itself replicate’s the album’s now iconic (and much copied) artwork.

First out the box is the original album, and a slight hint of disappointment in that it’s in a single sleeve, not reproducing the original gatefold. But that said, the remastered music on heavy weight vinyl sounds wonderful as soon as the needle hits the grooves.

There’s a different heaviness in the doom here, the heroin affecting the band’s sound and lyrics. Tomorrow’s Dream (also a single) keeps the heaviness while upping the tempo, and Laguna Sunrise composed by Iommi after a night sniffing (they never injected) and witnessing the morning dawn.

Much of the writing was done during recording in Los Angeles, California, and with Iommi taking control of production (the band felt that Roger Bain wasn’t getting the best out of the band), there’s a definite step forward.

Snowblind, a clear reference to the drugs they were taking, used the same orchestra as Sunrise, and also was to be the album’s title track until the record company stepped in. Supernaut has a great riff, often considered one the band’s finest songs, and a life favourite too that often featured a drum solo.

The album’s only light note is the ballad Changes, the leading piano line written and played by Iommi (again Butler wrote the lyrics). The song appeared as a single b-side, and later as an a-side by Ozzy. And the less said about the Ozzy/Kelly version the better

The album produced many a bold move; from the ballad Changes to the uses of orchestra, a slight change of direction, and a willing to write about what’s going on, from drug use to breakdown and, in the case of Changes, Bill Ward’s divorce. Under the surface it’s a heartbreaking song to listen to.

Volume 4, as above, is an essential part of any rock or metal record collection, the remaster gives it a crisp sound and on LP comes over well.

The next two LPs out of the box are similarly packaged single LPs, featuring new mixes of outtakes and alternate versions. It begins with six previously unreleased studio outtakes from the original sessions for the album, newly mixed by Steven Wilson using the analog multi-tracks.

Highlights include outtakes for “Supernaut” and “Changes,” as well an instrumental version of “Under The Sun.” The set also features 11 additional studio recordings (also newly mixed by Wilson from the analog multi-tracks) that spotlight alternative takes, false starts and snippets of studio dialogue. A bit of banter and a false start or two give insight into the album’s recording,

Then there’s a 2lp live album in a gatefold sleeve, featuring tracks from across the 1973 tour; and this is the first time this set as appeared in its entirety, officially. Drugs or no drugs the band were on form and so were the audience. Magnificent in every sense.

And to finish, there’s a large poster and a 12”x12” hardback book with extensive liner notes and lots of pictures, including singles and world-wide label variations (not enough releases have this).

So apart from the lack of gatefold on the original LP (these things matter to us vinyl collectors), this set sounds as good as it looks and half the fun is enjoying the packing while listening to the music.

A Dream, at Sunrise or any time of day. *****

Album review: THE GOLD NEEDLES – What’s Tomorrow Ever Done For You?

THE GOLD NEEDLES – What’s Tomorrow Ever Done For You

Jem Records [Release date 19.02.21]

The Gold Needles are onto album number three that features nine new original songs plus three covers including The Hollies ‘Have You Ever Loved Somebody’ and The Beatles ‘If I Needed Someone.’

Formed in 2015, The Gold Needles hail from Hull, England and consist of Simon Dowson (vocals, guitar), Dave Burbidge (guitar, keys, programming), Mark English (keys, vocals) and Carl Slaughter (bass, vocals), with Will Jones playing drums on all but two of the album’s tracks.

Opening with the album’s title track it neatly sums up the band’s sound, that of harmony filled psychedelic power pop. Next up is ‘I Get The Pressure’ which is bit new wave a la the Cars and seems to feature synth wizard Larry Fast (Foreigner, Peter Gabriel) credited as remixing the track.

‘Billy Liar’ has been released as a single, not surprising given its instant on the ears chorus. If mainstream radio played music like this it would be on the A playlists. ‘Drown This Sorrow’ also has single potential, having an air of the Moody Blues both in the music and vocals.

Depression is the subject ‘Realm Of The Black Dog’, which starts with Jean Michel Jarre like synths, dog howls and then the song morphs into a rock tour de force. Jesus Jones came to mind on this song, not sure why!

The three covers suit the Gold Needles down to the ground. Adding a little guitar heft to the Hollies song ‘Have You Ever Loved Somebody’, it provides a good chance to highlight the band’s glorious harmony vocals. The Beatles tune reeks of the 60’s and takes the listener back to that decade of pop delights, albeit with a modern production. A marvellous listen. The third and final cover version is ‘Counting The Days’, a song from 1984 by the Sound, not a band I was aware of before Wiki came to the rescue. Another song that fits the band’s style and sound.

A ray of musical sunshine in an otherwise dark and dreary time of the year. ****

Album review: W.E.T. – Retransmission

Frontiers Records (Release Date 22.01.21)

Of all the melodic rock supergroups assembled, usually on the Frontiers roster, W.E.T. have proved to have staying power.  This fourth studio release  comes a relatively recent three years after its predecessor ‘Earthrage’, which is no mean feat given the prolific recording schedule of their main protagonists, singer Jeff Scott Soto, Work of Art’s Robert Sall and Erik Martensson.

The latter seems to be the main creative influence as producer and main songwriter, the other two just chipping in with the odd co-write, and it is inevitable that trademarks of his work with Eclipse influence the album’s sound.

With each successive  release W.E.T. have sculpted their sound down to its essentials and ‘Retransmission’ is their most direct effort yet, going straight for the jugular and wasting no time in reaching the hooks and choruses.  Proof comes in the fact that of the eleven tracks, four weigh in at only just over three minutes.

Opener ‘Big Boys Don’t Cry’ sets this tone with Jeff singing over a big bank of backing vocals, while ‘The Moment of Truth’ is outstanding- the bulk of the song has a smooth style with prominent keyboards, courtesy of Robert, and a slight Survivor influence, before kicking into a different gear altogether with a series of neo-classical inspired guitar solos from another Eclipse man Magnus Henriksson.  There is more shredding from him on ‘Call of the Wild’, which as befits its overused title is rather formulaic, but the best is about to come.

‘Got to Be About Love’ begins quietly then bursts into a memorable hook-filled chorus with a commercial production which brings Jeff’s vocals to the fore, while the solo this time comes from Robert and is reminiscent of Kee Marcello’s on Europe’s ‘Superstitious’. ‘Beautiful Game’ is pacier with solos from Magnus that combine speed and melody, but is equally hook-filled, and melodic hard rock does not come much finer than this pair.

‘How Far to Babylon’- perhaps a little close to ‘Road to Babylon’ from one of Erik’s other projects in Ammunition-  has more of a groove to it with a chant-along chorus before exploding late song into a guitar solo, this time from Erik.

Inevitably the quality cannot quite be maintained from this high bar- ‘Coming Home’, with more Def Leppard-style gang vocals, is something of a grower while ‘What Are You Waiting For’ is a relatively average ballad, but a welcome change of pace. The same is true of a lesser extent of ‘How Will I Know’, which is a mid-tempo slow burner with the keyboards which are generally sparingly used on the album coming to the fore for once.

However any lingering anti-climax is swept away by a brilliant closer  in ‘One Final Kiss’, which flies by as stabbing keys over a Jeff vocal intro give way to another instantly commercial number with a big chorus and a slick guitar solo from Robert, again all wrapped up in a three minute package.

My one reservation is that the album is an instant fix and comes over as rather effortless. Hopefully this reflects their natural talent rather than laziness, but they do seem to have mislaid the sense of adventure in the arrangements that marked the first album.

Nevertheless, with those straight ahead hooks wrapped in a rare fresh, bold production, it sets high standards as a strong early contender for melodic rock album of the year.

Album review : WALTER EGAN – Fascination

Red Steel Music [Release date 05.02.21]

Westcoast/Americana/AOR wizard, Walter Egan is back, with a smoothed out rock’n'roll love story, Fascination, just 2 years after his Burritos’ album, Sound As Ever, created a few fresh waves.

Imbued with bygone vibes, it revisits Egan’s seventies’ albums produced by fellow travellers, Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, who knew a bit about Westcoast cool.

Lyrically, it documents Egan’s “shared history” with “super groupie”, Pamela DesBarres, and despite the upbeat, string driven tone of the early tracks, ‘Miss Pamela’ and ‘A Fool In Love’, a sense of melancholy seeps into your consciousness as the album unwinds. His seesawing emotional state resonates throughout the tracks that follow, providing little insights into the world of pop culture and music celebrity.

Highlights might be ‘Woo To Woe’, given a surprising emotional weight by a quiet symphony of jangling guitars, and the high, lonesome, McGuinn like sound of ‘Hell I Know It’s Over’, in which a pained Egan accepts the inevitable, “now at last I put her in the past”.

Egan’s pedigree, created when he fell in with the first wave of the Laurel Canyon crowd – Henley, Frey, Browne, Ronstadt, and others – permeates Egan’s music even today. It was no surprise to anyone back then that within two years, he’d signed a six album, worldwide deal with Columbia Records. Buckingham and Nicks teased out the best of him on his Fundamental Roll and Not Shy albums as his solo career took off.

It perhaps should be no surprise that the magic is with him still. ***1/2

Album review: ZED MITCHELL – Route 69

Pete Feenstra chatted to Zed Mitchell for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio in January 2021 and playing tracks from ‘Route 69′.

ZED MITCHELL - Route 69

Timezone Records [Release date 15.12.20]

Zed Mitchell may only be known to his loyal coterie of blues aficionados but, clearly, ‘Route 69′ could garner a wider audience. Based in Germany he’s yet to really break out of his partisan audience and the new album may well be the passport.

Born in Belgrade, he became professional in 1970 at the age of 19 and has released over 20 albums.

Opener ‘By Sundown You’ll Be Gone’ reminds me of a more energetic John Campbell (the late great) with its swampy backbeat but the chorus is compelling  and catchy, the song punctuated by Mitchell’s bluesy licks.  And who should crop up supplying lyrics?  Our very own resident bluesman Pete Feenstra!

‘I Like To Drive’ has those clipped guitar notes that remind of Mark Knopfler whilst ‘I’m Still Waiting’ is one of several tracks that combine tasteful guitaring with a memorable chorus.

Pete’s back to supply lyrics to ‘The Girl That Broke Your Heart’ and ‘Freedom Trail’, the former reminding me of one-time Wishbone Ash guitarist Ted Turner’s approach with his Ted & Majella partnership.  The latter evokes Chris Rea.

Mitchell’s general approach is laid back throughout and the only distraction might be the occasional ‘non-native English speaker sings in English’ syndrome which affects the vocal intonation.  There are hints that this might be sorted next time with more use of his son Todor who supplies additional guitar and backing vocals throughout.

An instrumental or two might have provided contrast and a better vehicle for Mitchell’s smooth, engaging guitar tones which are here to embellish the songs rather than take centre stage.

This album should capture the ears of a wider listening public.  Yes it is blues based but goes much further with attractive tunesmithery leaning more towards pop/soft rock and even with a jazzy inflection.   Cool stuff.  ***1/2
