Album review: HEAVEN – Where Angels Fear To Tread

HEAVEN - Where Angels Fear To Tread

Rock Candy Records [Release date 09.10.20]

Australia’s tough as teak rock bands. There were four: AC/DC, The Angels, Cold Chisel and Rose Tattoo.

But there was also a fifth…Heaven.

They had formed in 1980′s Sydney. The band’s vocalist, Scottish born Allan Fryer, had been tipped to replace Bon Scott. Their manager, Michael Browning, once managed AC/DC. They couldn’t go wrong, except the breakthrough never happened.

In 1980, Browning had taken the band to the US to tour and to record this, their second album, “Where Angels Fear To Tread”. Glenn Hughes and Ronnie James Dio added to the backing vocals. And in the band’s menacing, stalking, hard rock rock songs, you can detect trace elements of Black Sabbath going back to their “Heaven And Hell’ album. Quite conceivably, that’s where Heaven got their name.

The songs are all so tight and punchy. Guitarists Kelly’s and Cocks’ remarkably lean yet eminently anthemic axework jointly soar above a piston pumping groove on track after track. ‘Madness’, ‘Rock School’ and ‘Hard Life’ leap off the page.

Fryer’s voice, somewhere between Feargal Sharkey’s tremulous tenor and Bon Scott’s gravelly edge, has the perfect hard rock heft and weight for sensory assaulting songs like ‘Where Angels Fear To Tread’, the track, and the muscular ‘Scream For Me’, but is equally effective on the the more considered tones of Supremes’ cover, ‘Love Child’ and the deliberately unconvincing sentiments of ‘Don’t Mean Nothin’.

The original album hit the US Rock charts a glancing blow. Then disappeared. A third album ‘Knocking On Heaven’s Door’ (1985) disappeared without trace, despite what is probably the pre eminent recording of the Dylan classic.

On this reissue, Rock Candy’s remastering techs have again excelled themselves, bringing up the dynamics that were just waiting in producer George (Kiss/Lita Ford/Mellencamp ) Tutko’s original mix for rediscovery.

And the beefed up artwork, an entertaining essay and some new interviews do the album the justice it deserves.

DVD review: RONNIE WOOD – Somebody Up There Likes Me

RONNIE WOOD - Somebody Up There Likes Me

Eagle Vision [Release date 27.08.20]

In essence “Somebody Up There Likes Me” is a film telling the story of the remarkable career of Ronnie Wood, however, it is much more than that. In the film Wood says that in his head he never got past 29 and so now finds being 70 quite surreal, and if he could do it all again would approach life with his eyes more open- I would love to live his life as it is.

Raw, honest, and pulling no punches, this film is the roots and the stories of what makes Ronnie who he is. From the stories of his Dad’s troubles with drink, through the art school years of his brothers and his discovery of music and playing in bands. Wood is a risk taker, but hasn’t it paid off. He and I attended the same school and it is a shame he doesn’t mention this as I have long suspected that the ancient music teacher that I had was probably the same one that he had some 20 years earlier.

“Somebody Up There Likes Me” is a veritable treasure trove of rare live footage, interviews (new and archive with Peter Grant and Malcolm McLaren appearing in retrospect) and rock n roll tales. His time with first band The Birds, The Jeff Beck Group, The Faces, The Rolling Stones, and a long and often overlooked solo career, are all discussed here. You get to hear how Woody turned down joining Led Zep (when they were becoming The New Yardbirds), how he could have joined The Stones in 1969 but didn’t find that out until 5 years later (Faces’ bandmate Ronnie Lane apparently took the call and said he was happy in his current band) and how he joined The Stones- a band that he swore he would one day when he first saw them as far back as ‘63/’64.

When Ronnie Wood finally joined The Stones he almost breathed new life into the band, and he and Keith Richards really do work as one, and so well. Mick Jagger, Richards and Charlie Watts are all interviewed here and all speak about him lovingly, and with admiration, and throughout the lows Jagger in particular has never given up on him.

The Faces were a party band but that party did carry on for decades before Wood got clean and throughout the interviews he is frankly honest about his addictions and getting to where he is today.

Sobriety has clearly left him more creative and “Somebody Up There Likes Me” showcases not only Wood’s well-known musicianship but also his amazing talent for art. One highlight here is Damien Hirst, a friend who helped him through rehab, talking to him about art while he’s painting, and this is a great interaction to watch, as are the acoustic musical interludes that appear throughout the film.

Other interviews include Mick Jagger talking about getting into music, Imelda May, Rod Stewart and Ronnie’s his wife Sally.

The film was directed by Mike Figgis and was originally shown at the BFI London Film Festival last year and at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, to great reviews. It was also recently shown on Sky Arts, however this BluRay and DVD release features additional performances from Ronnie, plus extra features. The deluxe hardback book edition includes both the DVD and BluRay alongside 40 pages of pictures and paintings that are exclusive to this release, alongside an essay from Paul Sexton.

“Somebody Up There Likes Me” is a great tribute to the story of one of rock music’s true characters. *****

Quick plays: GIANT, DAMN YANKEES

GIANT - Last Of The Runaways

Rock Candy Records [Release date 02.10.20]

GIANT – Last Of The Runaways

In the music world, Dann Huff is best known for his success as a multi award winning Country Music producer/ guitarist and songwriter. But for Melodic Rock fans, he and his band, Giant will always be remembered for their 1989 debut album “Last Of The Runaways” (and perhaps too for his stint, previously, with Whiteheart).

It was recorded in England, and included several songwriting collaborations between Huff, Mark Spiro and Terry (Charlie) Thomas (who also produced).

‘I’m A Believer’ was the breakout track. Its opening solo, loud and fierce, just hums with the kind of vitality that only an electric guitar can create.

The song, a stomping, stadium filling anthem, kicks off the album, rendered 3 dimensional here by sympathetic remastering.

None of the other tracks, cool and classy as they are, truly reinforce the band identity as defined by that opener. Its little brother, ‘Innocent Days’ and the bluesy, shuffling ‘It Takes Two’ come close. Big ballad, ‘I’ll See You In My Dreams’ comes closest. Its keen, commercial edge allowed it a tilt at the Billboard Top Twenty.

Unfortunately for Giant, at the end of the decade, Melodic Rock as we know it was closing in on its sell-by date. Interest was waning. Some of the best stuff in the genre, like this album, was being overtaken by events. The Pacific Northwest was rising.  ****

DAMN YANKEES - Don't Tread

DAMN YANKEES – Dont Tread\

Rock Candy Records [Release date 02.10.20]

The supertrio wrote and recorded some outstanding songs between the debut and 1992′s “Don’t Tread”. But fans expected more from the coming together of Ted (Amboy Dukes) Nugent, Jack (Nightranger) Blades and Tommy (Styx) Shaw.

It again proved that in popular music, as much as any other collective artistic endeavour, it’s chemistry that counts, not just individual talent.

Still, when they were cooking, they could spark lightning. Power ballad ‘Where You Goin Now’ is one in a line of immense genre power ballads that began with ‘Stairway To Heaven’ in 1971. Many Hard Rock bands, like Cinderella and G’n'R borrowed heavily (and successfully) from the style and tone of LZ’s masterpiece in the following years, but few surpassed this one.

Elsewhere on the album, several tracks standout. ‘Fifteen Minutes Of Fame’s piercing harmonies bounce about on Nugent’s bold, thrusting guitar work; ‘Mister Please’s quick fire harmonies strike a distinctive tone, and ‘Silence Is Broken’ works hard at being another epic ballad. And yet frequently, it’s moreso Nugent’s blazing, powerful (and eminently tuneful) guitar work that catches your ear.

“Only” 28 years since this was released, yet the remastering does it a great service, bringing up the resonating Shaw/Blades harmonies and adding sharpness to Nugent’s blazing solos.

Adding live versions of the band’s biggies ‘High Enough’ and ‘Where Are You Goin Now’ is a nice touch. The perfect ending to a classy album.

Rock Candy have been reissuing remastered classics for so long now, it’s easy to forget that the whole package always includes new essays, written by leading music journalists, and plenty of previously unseen picks. Always great value.  ****

Album review: PRIDE OF LIONS – Lion Heart

Pride Of Lions- Lionheart

Frontiers Records [Release Date 09.10.20]

Approaching 70, maestro songwriter and Survivor founder member Jim Peterik is showing no signs of slowing down. After last year’s World Stage release with a star studded casts of guest vocalists, and co-writing much of Dennis De Young’s excellent album earlier this year, he is back in more familiar territory with Pride of Lions, on a sixth album and their first since 2017’s ‘Fearless’.

The adage of ‘stick to what you know’ applies here with a continuation of the PoL formula of Jim’s sonorous baritone and the soaring vocal dramatics of Toby Hitchcock trading lines throughout, and indeed he utilises the same production team and seasoned Chicago area musicians that he has worked with through most of the band’s career. As ever, the songs are beautifully constructed and arranged in old school fashion, as you would expect from the man chosen to share his songwriting tips in the well-known ‘for Dummies’ series.

However there are a few differences of emphasis this time. At times their last two releases saw Jim and Toby veer too far in a theatrical direction better suited to Broadway musicals- on this occasion there seems a conscious effort to  steer the band back towards more conventional melodic rock roots.

Naturally the Survivor comparisons come through strongly, none more so than on the glorious intro to second song ‘We Play For Free’. Who cares that the stabbing keys that open the song before a guitar power chord and are repeated later are oh so familiar, having heralded ‘Jackie Don’t Go’ and ‘Popular Girl’ and possibly other Survivor songs?

The title cut and opening track celebrates the unselfishness of everyday heroes, which is a suitable message for these troubled times, while the very Survivor-esque ‘Heart Of The Warrior’ is a similar lyrical tribute to those who put themselves in harm’s way. ‘Carry Me Back’ is a brilliant period piece, with lyrics about the ‘summer of 83’. The musical backing matches that era and it is easy to imagine one of those actors turned singers such as Jack Wagner delivering it on an American TV theme tune or film soundtrack.

‘Flagship’ also has a classic eighties feel with a superbly constructed chorus and a typical Peterik nautical metaphor, while throughout the album strikes the right balance between keyboard and guitars, with some fluid solos from Mike Aquino making their mark at various points and giving the songs a rockier edge.  Toby’s ever superb vocals are delivered with a little more control and restraint and it is not until seven songs in that a rare ballad in ‘Unfinished Heart’ gives reign to those Broadway tendencies.

‘Sleeping with a Memory’ has a classic Pride of Lions vibe, but the keyboard melody of Foreigner’s ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’ is shamelessly lifted! And while there are  no clunkers, a couple of songs are more average by his songwriter standards in ‘Good Thing Gone’ and ‘Give It Away’, the latter with another blatant lift, this time the keyboard intro to Bon Jovi’s ‘Wild In The Streets’.

Possibly the most interesting number is ‘Rock & Roll Boomtown’ a cautionary tale of sixties Hollywood and the end of the hippie dream which it is easy to conceive Dennis De Young singing. The pace is slowed to bring out the lyrical message and strength of the chorus, though it then unexpectedly diverts in very pomp rock style to a more complex instrumental section and bridge.

The last two songs are also a slight departure – ‘You’re Not A Prisoner’ is a more direct, hard hitting rocker out of the songbook of Foreigner or Brian Howe-era Bad Company while ‘Now’ is a real grower – not so much an out and out ballad but a mid tempo track with all the Peterik writing hallmarks, with an unusual baroque feel to the instrumentation and a winding solo from Mike as an outro.

After a slight dip in quality with their last two albums, this is the closest Pride of Lions have come to matching the glory of their opening trio of releases in the 2000’s. It is unlikely to win any new fans but rejoice in the old-school craft of an AOR master at work.   **** 1/4

Album review: MALIBOOZ – QE2

MALIBOOZ - QE2

Red Steel Music [Release date 30.10.20]

Malibooz is John Zambetti and Walter Egan. Their individual and collective pedigrees are incontestable. Their songs have been used multiple times in movies, including “Catch Me If You Can” and “I Robot”. The music they have written and recorded since the band’s inception in 1964 would fill the QE2. Which, funnily enough, is the title of their new album.

It is the follow up to “Queen’s English” (2010). Walter was born in Queens, New York. Again they show their love and admiration of the sound of the “Sixties Invasion”, and how it affected US popular music, which in their youth, they witnessed first hand. They’ve even got Pete (Hermans Hermits) Noone guesting, and a cover of The Beatles’ worldwide hit single, ‘We Can Work It Out’ is the album’s bonus track.

The other 14 tracks are originals.

There are so many reference points and connections, deliberate or otherwise. The rarified atmosphere of Laurel Canyon in the sixties (and seventies) is all pervasive. Opener ‘Resist’s Byrdsian raga rock, chiming guitars, and Crosby/McGuinn harmonies, smooth out on ‘Heaven’ into the meticulously crafted, breathy soft rock of the Eagles. ‘Ordinary Smile’ segues seamlessly into the majestic country rock of Jackson Browne. ‘Heal A Broken Heart’ owes more than (half) a song title to the Bee Gees.

And so on.

What we’re hearing is not necessarily pastiche, but a reflection of the mood and the sounds originally created by the “British Invasion’, the brittle harmonies, the cascading choruses that sprung from nowhere, the 2 or 3 minute epics of sonic brilliance. All of the above.

Yes, there are plenty of “soundalikes” to reference. But we should be clear, Malibooz have their own voice. Distinct and distinctive. If their interpretation of their own material creates ripples of nostalgia among an older audience, and perhaps curiosity among a younger one, then Egan and Zambetti will have done their job. ****

Album review: MUDDY MANNINEN – River Flows

Pete Feenstra chatted to Muddy Manninen about the album ‘River Flows’ for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 8 November 2020. (45:38)

Muddy Manninan - River Flows
Presence Records [Release date 23.10.20]

Muddy Manninen’s ‘River Flows’ is an aptly titled album that has a sense of time, space and just like the name of his label, presence.

It’s an album that drips with feel, experience and at times explores a retrospective feel.

It’s the work of an independent musical spirit who obviously has much to impart outside of the somewhat more restrictive musical straight jacket of his former band Wishbone Ash.

And if his first post-Ash combo Hipkiss announced his willingness to venture deeper into funk, soul and blues, and his first solo album further embraced enveloping grooves, then this album is his most concise so far.

It reveals a full range of textural nuances, ranging from a rich array of tones, to some feverish wah-wah and contrasting intricate acoustic guitar work.

In short, his playing always serves the song. His interwoven lines and sparkling solos subtly bring colour and emphasis to a piece while amplifying melodic ideas and evoking lyrical feel of tracks like ‘Daytona Beach’.

He employs 5 vocalists – Melanie Denard, Gregg Sutton, Richard Johnson, Kev Moore and Chris Melhuish – and a pool of top line musicians who all bring their own talents to bear on music that balances deep grooves with exhilarating playing and meaningful lyrics, all part of an overall songcraft that serves the album well.

‘River Flows’ might well be regarded as a vehicle for Manninen’s expressive guitar playing, but it’s much more than that, as he glues together a project that just like the album title itself, flows from beginning to end.

His choice of subtly woven solos and judicious guitar work is actually in strong contrast to the big riff driven opener ‘Make Believe’.

The latter features the gusto of Melanie Denard who contributes three telling vocals in all.  She’s the perfect foil for Manninen’s lap steel playing on the Little Feat influenced ‘Money’, (Manninen being cast in the role of the late Lowell George and Dennard as the latter-day Shan Murphy), while she’s in a more introspective mood on the ballad ‘The River’.

‘Make Believe’, has the same drive and intensity as ‘Bastard’, the opening track of Manninen’s previous release ‘Long Player’, but it’s propelled by the irresistible combination of legendary Free drummer Simon Kirke and Manninen’s own high intensity riffs.

It’s no coincidence that Kirke’s other appearance on the album comes on ‘(Don’t Let Them Put The) Hoochie On You’, on which Richard Johnson provides the vocal husk, while Muddy switches to imperious slide on a track with self affirmative lyrics and a musical structure which owes much to Free’s ‘Mr. Big’.

As with the notable stylistic diversity of the album as a whole, the song is one of a number of building blocks that underpins a sequential equilibrium.

In this case it provides a balancing link between Manninen’s sculptured wah-wah, Kev Moore’s pithy vocals and Jerry Soffe’s throbbing bass line on the colourful imagery of ‘Daytona Beach’ and the acoustic/electric American verses of ‘Take These Blues From Me’.

Moore also provides a post-Beefheart vocal on the slide-led reworking of lyricist Ian Harris’s ‘Hey You’, from his Wolfman project, but it’s on ‘Take These Blues Away’ that Manninen fully reveals his guitar playing prowess.

The song evolves into a beautiful, full toned Zappa style solo, before he offers us a brief glimpse of his harmony guitar contribution to Wishbone Ash down the years, which he then transforms into a further imperious melodic solo with uplifting Floydian bv’s.

An extra verse and a gentled cushioned fade then leave us with a slight dynamic void, which he quickly fills with a short opening crescendo and some long languid linear guitar lines on Gregg Suttons funky ‘Last One To Know’.

It’s a track which combines a deep groove with clever word plays on a repeated infectious chanted hook, on which Gregor Wilson-Con adds significant bv’s before Muddy’s weeping guitar takes us into the fade.

Structurally it’s a pivotal moment on an album that flows mellifluously and cleverly shoe-horns stylistic diversity into a composite whole, making it feel like an old-fashioned album with contemporary sonic values.

Just like the title suggest, ‘River Flows’ has a coherent inner core which leaves the listener in no doubt as to where the album is going, even when Manninen resolves a tension in a solo, or pulls the album into yet another unexpected direction as on the funky fusion instrumental ‘The Wedge’.

Tomi Malm’s subtly layered synth parts bring another colourful wash to the album, as he trades lines with Manninen’s chunky rhythm guitar work and a wah-wah break.

It’s a beautiful arrangement that is anchored by the percolating rhythm section of funky bassist Mark Butler and crisp drummer Tom Gilkes. They let the melody breath on a lovely jammed finish with an all too soon fade, as Manninen adds more lashings of wah-wah.

The album works its way towards the lap-steel laden ‘Money’ and the stripped down acoustic sparkle into slide and Meana Dennard sung ‘The River’, there’s a palpable sense of destiny, a feel that the whole project is inexorably drawn towards the ethereal instrumental title track finish.

If ‘The River’ provides a lyrical philosophical framework, then the sudden fade and subsequent atmospheric intro to ‘River Flows’ pulls us into a track with a prescient feel, that provides the perfect resolution to all that has gone before.

It’s amazing to realize that this enveloping track features just Muddy on bass and guitar and Tom Gilkes on drums. The guitar work alone would surely make Robin Trower smile.

It’s a beautifully conceived and superbly produced finish to an engaging album full of substance, loving care and creativity ****½

Album review: NINE BELOW ZERO – Live At Rockpalast 1981 &1996

MiG Records [Release date 30.10.20]

As a latecomer to the Nine Below Zero party having only caught them live in the last couple of years at the Butlins Rock and Blues Festival, this set is the ideal package to explore the band’s earlier live work. Spread over three CD’s and two DVD’s this well packaged box set is the latest in a long line of Rockpalast retrospectives from MiG (Made In Germany) Records and contains liner notes from no other than NBZ frontman Dennis Greaves himself.

CD 1 contains the band’s slot from the 1st Rockpalast Open Air Festival held at Loreley and the guys were in great form over the course of the 15 tracks. Things kick off with ‘Don’t Point Your Finger At The Guitar Man’ and ‘Homework’ both of which feature great guitar work from Greaves and top harmonica playing from Mark Feltham.

Other set highlights include the band’s cover of ‘Rockin’ Robin’, the harmonica heavy ‘Ridin’ On The L+N’ and an excellent run through of ‘Three Times Enough’.  There is also a wonderfully discordant version of ‘You Can’t Please All The People All The Time’ which demonstrates the wealth of musical talent on stage. The first set rounds off with two live favourites, ‘Pack Fair And Square’ and ‘Can’t Say Yes, Can’t Say No’ which also go down a storm.

In the liner notes for the first show Greaves talks fondly about his excitement of playing on the same bill as Thin Lizzy that day and it’s a note of the band’s rise in stature that in 1996 one of the guests during the band’s set is none other than ex Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson. The second set featured is an interesting proposition as it is more of a Rory Gallagher tribute show than a true NBZ headline set.

The premise was that the guys appeared under the ‘Band Of Friends’ moniker along with various special guests to celebrate Rory’s music almost exactly a year after his death. CD2 starts off with more NBZ favourites including ‘Soft Touch’ and another excellent version of ‘Ridin’ On The L&N’ before various guests are invited on stage to play a mix of blues classics and the pick of Gallagher’s back catalogue.

With the likes of Gerry McAvoy, Lou Martin, Brian Robertson, Robbie McIntosh and Paul Rose on stage you know the music is going to be spot on and tracks like ‘Messin’ With The Kid’ take on a new life.

‘Off The Handle’ and ‘Laundromat’ open the third CD in fine style which also contains a great cover of ‘Let’s Work Together’ and Gerry Garcia’s ‘Tore Up Over You’. The extended jam medley of Boogie/Bullfrog Blues gives everyone space to stretch their individual talents and I am sure Rory would have been nodding along in approval.

A heartfelt version of ‘I’ll Admit You’re Gone’ rounds off the set before the massed band return for a blast through of the Irish folk tune ‘The Mountain Road’ then finishing off with a blistering version of ‘Tico Tico’.

This package will have dual appeal to both fans of Nine Below Zero but also to aficionados of Rory Gallagher’s back catalogue. Above all though it is a celebration of all things Rhythm and Blues and another great value for money package for MiG Records.

I may have been late in appreciating the music and talents of Nine Below Zero but it is no chore catching up on past history and these shows amply demonstrate why the band are still playing to capacity crowds nearly 40 years on.  ****

Album review: FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – A Decade Of Destruction Vol. 2

Better Noise Music [Release date 09.10.20]

This album is the second ‘greatest hits’ package that FFDP have released following on from Volume 1 back in 2017. It has proved to be a very aptly timed release as it neatly rounds of the tenure of guitarist Jason Hook who has recently left the band. So, what has Jason left as his legacy?

This album contains 12 songs spanning the band’s career and is augmented with five ‘new’ tracks which are in fact made up of one completely new song, a new acoustic version of another and three remixes, more on which later…

For me Volume 1 focused too much on the mellower and more commercial side of the band and although it was a good collection it lacked punch ironically. Vol 2 is an altogether rockier affair although it does start off gently with the band’s ‘country’ hit ‘Blue On Black’. The FFDP version of this song really works although some considered it a step too far, but the band have never been ones to shy away from a bit of controversy and are happy to do as they damn well please!

‘The Tragic Truth’ follows and this is Five Finger Death Punch at their best, a track best described as a clenched fist in a velvet glove. A slow build through the verse leads into an explosive chorus with Ivan Moody demonstrating his vocal talents perfectly.

The one new track on the album is up next and what a song it is! ‘Broken World’ I think sums up things in general at the present time, angry riffs and angrier vocals delivered with real venom, giving a voice to the people.

It is also the band’s first recording with new guitarist Andy James and judging by the fretwork on this track he is more than up to the task. The main refrain from next song ‘I Refuse’ could be the perfect follow on to ‘Broken World’ with Ivan pleading ‘Wake me up when this is over…’ I think we have all felt like that at some point through the course of 2020.

The rest of the original tracks are a great mix of all that FFDP have to offer whether it is their softer side on ‘When The Seasons Change’ and ‘M.I.N.E (End This Way) or at their heaviest with ‘Sham Pain’ and ‘Never Enough’

The other additional tracks are left to the end of the album starting with an acoustic version of ‘Wrong Side Of Heaven’ which the band were playing live prior to the European tour being cut short due to the rising pandemic. The song lends itself perfectly to the acoustic treatment and Ivan’s impassioned vocal is spot on.

That just leaves the remixes of ‘Trouble’, ‘Wash It All Away’ and ‘Bad Company’ to round off the album and maybe its an age thing but I fail to see the point. Surely a remix should enhance the original not murder it, but on these tracks the perpetrators are guilty in the first degree. Still, they are at the end and easily avoided so it’s not all bad.

If this collection is to act as Jason Hook’s swansong then he is leaving behind a body of work that he can be justifiably proud of, he would do well to disown the remixes though!  ****

EP Review: NUCLEAR POWER TRIO – A Clear And Present Rager

Metal Blade Records [ 30.10.20]

Forget G20 summits or G7’S for that matter, where better for three world leaders to meet up but in a recording studio in Colorado. The premise of this EP is that Donald Trump (guitar), Vladimir Putin (bass) and Kim Jong Un (drums) have met up to create five instrumental tracks of such magnitude that the future of the world is assured so long as creative riffs keep flowing.

Opening track ‘Clear And Present Rager’ explodes from the speakers with all the power of a ten megaton bomb. Frantic riffage, lightening basswork and powerhouse drumming are the order of the day. The accompanying video is well worth a You Tube trip if you need some light entertainment.

The fantastically entitled ‘Grab ‘Em By The Pyongyang’ (I believe DT came up with that one!) is up next and proves Mr Trump is making guitar playing great again with some tasty licks and inventive soloing.

Vladimir gets his chance to shine on ‘The Fusion Collusion’, a rock/funk workout with dexterous bass work from the bear riding Russian colossus. He links in perfectly with DT in the mid-section in a collaboration not seen since the last presidential elections (possibly…).

‘Ukraine In The Membrane’, Vlad claims credit for that title, takes things down a little with some delicate acoustic guitar parts, but Kim Jung also gets to stretch his bass pedal with a few complicated rhythm patterns which have all the precision of a North Korean military parade.

That just leaves ‘Mutually Assured Seduction’ to round off the EP in a hail of riffs which find their target with all the accuracy of Intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The three most powerful men in the world may not have actually appeared on the tracks (they may have possibly been portrayed by Nick Schendzielos from Cephalic Carnage, Greg Burgess from Allegaeon and Pete Webber from Havok) but this EP is still a major power to be reckoned with.

If this is the soundtrack to world peace then bring on the olive branch and the white doves!  ****

Album review: PROCOL HARUM – Something Magic

PROCOL HARUM – Something Magic

Cherry Red/Esoteric Recordings [Release Date 30.10.20]

Procol Harum certainly needed to spin a spell or two after new US producers, Ron and Howie Albert, threw out half the songs they’d written for “Something Magic”, their 9th album.

This was 1977. The band had regrouped after losing ground and members over the previous eight albums. Gary Brooker, Chris Copping, Mick Grabham, BJ Wilson and Pete Solley formed a classy line up, but were hurried into recording “Something Magic”. It was to be their last new studio album until 1991.

Its flaws are not immediately apparent. The title track, which opens the album, is a cracking little piece of pared down prog. Sketched around Brooker’s piano, it proves that arrangement is often more important than composition. ‘Strangers In Space’ closed the original LP’s Side One. Surprisingly, Brooker’s smoky, bluesy, vocals blossomed inside the songs spacey sound FX.

The three tracks that come between, ‘Skating On Thin Ice’, ‘Wizard Man’, ‘The Mark Of The Claw’, are underwritten and worse, underpowered. This was 1977, bands like Procol Harum were facing down the rise of punk, and here, found themselves in a musical cul-de-sac, deserted by their muse and let down by their producers.

The relative mediocrity of those 3 tracks is eventually redeemed by the bonus tracks on CD1. It seems strange that these were voted down in favour of the tracks that made the cut.

‘The Old Dog’ is perhaps the most appealing. An old fashioned piano rag, that goes barelling along on the strength of “too much wine last night”. It has all the fun, fiddles and energy of a Louisiana Saturday night. It would go down great live.

That’s not to say the plaintive plaintif on ‘You’d Better Wait’ doesn’t deserve a mention.

The band’s 3 part suite ‘The Worm And The Tree’ filled all of the original LP’s second side. It’s a simplistic, spoken work parable set to music. It doesn’t succeed, but it doesn’t really fail either. Fast changing musical trends had holed Prog below the waterline, temporarily at least. Arguably this track was the band drowning, not waving.

The second disc is a recording of the band’s 1977 appearance on the BBC’s Sight And Sound in Concert series.

Taken from ‘newly discovered’ master tapes, as with the original album, this remastered version sounds superb, it’s clean and clear, with only a little of the analogue warmth missing. The original TV programme cut ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ presumably on the basis we’d all heard it a couple of million times. It is now restored.

The concert focuses on the new album of course, but throws in crisply recorded versions of the biggies, ‘Conquistador’ and the fabulous ‘Grand Hotel’.

No one realised it at the time, but this is a snapshot of a band apparently ready for flight, but running out of runway. As it turned out, it is as much an historical document as a piece of music.  ***1/2

Album review: SILVERA – Edge Of The World

SILVERA – Edge Of The World

Mighty Music [Release date 16.10.20]

With worldwide lockdowns and the inability to get out on tour many bands over the last few months have taken to the studio as a refuge from the real world. As a result of this many new albums are now surfacing and as such it takes something special to stand out and grab your attention, this debut from Danish rockers Silvera does just that and then some!

From the opening chords of ‘Alive’ to the closing notes of ‘Promise’ this album rocks hard and heavy blending together elements of Alterbridge, Nickelback and Silvera’s Danish brethren Volbeat. Big riffs and soaring melodies are the order of the day and, given this is the band’s debut release, the musicianship throughout is highly impressive.

Opener ‘Alive’ is built on a huge riff provided by dual guitars of Michael Krogh and Simon Nilsson Krabbemark. Michael also provides the lead vocals and has a strong, sonorous delivery which easily matches the bombastic riffs. ‘Something Else’ follows in the same vein replete with killer chorus and solid rhythm section.

The album title track follows and takes the pace down a little but the track is no less effective, again its all about the chorus, this is set to be a live favourite when gigs can once again take place. The pace is then upped once more for ‘No Air’, again the guitar work is top notch as is the album production which is crystal clear and brings out the best in the band’s sound.

Other album highlights include the brooding riff of ‘Generation Z’, ‘The Reckoning’ which features a great melody and impressive drumming from Jens Gade and album closer ‘Promise’ which rounds things of in rocking style. Another track of note is ‘Everything We Do’ which features Kobra Paige from Kobra and The lotus on vocal duties to great effect.

Silvera have managed to release an album that sounds like it has come from a long established, arena headlining band rather than this being a debut release. With talent in spades, great musicianship and song writing ability it is a fairly safe bet to say that the guys will find themselves in that headlining position in the near future, impressive stuff.  *****

Album review: DGM – Tragic Separation

DGM – Tragic Separation

Frontiers [Release date 09.10.20]

Tenth album from Italian Prog Metallers, DGM. In which they examine the notion that the journey (of life) is more important than the destination.

With all of the tracks, there’s a direct correlation between the events the song represents and the controlled musical cacophany. The song titles offer a clue… ‘Stranded’, ‘Silence’, ‘Curtain’ (big clue there) and so on.

The breathless opener, ‘Flesh And Blood’, slows up only for a superbly uplifting chorus. The relentlessly pounding rhythms, and the screaming guitar, which move from speed freak to searing, melodic soloing, represents the pain of birth and arrival in the world.

Lyrically, ‘Surrender’ progresses to the child/parent relationship, and makes a subtle, but definitive move into hard rock, as does the excellent ‘Fate’, one of the album’s outstandingly good tracks, trading the aggressive vocals and guitars for some beautifully melodic moments. In fact, stylistically, much of the album switches fluidly between genres.

‘Hope’ is perhaps the prime example, starting life as exhausting, mouth open, piledriving power metal. Then jumping ship, sailing a course through the hard rock territory of class bands like Gotthard and Mad Max, occasionally negotiating eruptions of sonic turbulence. It’s an exhilarating journey, and never pushes too far into “epic” territory, thanks goodness, that approach would have undermined the album’s theme.

As has been widely reported, the title track’s singing, soughing violin and crashing chords are ready made for a Kansas comparison. Which is understandable but unfair. This song stands on its own. Marco Basile’s vocals connect directly with the song’s lyrics of love, loss and regret, transcending all possible genre limitations. He raises an already powerful piece, musically, into album standout position, by a distance.

Considering this is not the band who started life as DGM ten albums ago, this is where any decent band would have wanted to end up. ****

Film review: ICON – Music Through the Lens

ICON - Music Through the Lens

Sky Arts from 06/11/20

Think of all the iconic music images you have enjoyed, think of those which are both timeless and yet capture a moment in time and this new six-part Sky series ICON – Music Through the Lens will undoubtably contain a number of these photographs.

Featuring over 3000 stills, 128 interviews and music from the likes of Springsteen, Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and more, this promises to be a great insight into photographs that have literally documented the history of popular music through the decades.

Amongst the interviews contained here are those with over fifty of the world’s best-known music photographers, often proving that they were as rock n roll as the subjects they were working with. The series promises to be captivating and should draw you in with tales from the road, the evolution of album cover art and the acceptance of music photography as art itself. However, it could be said that the art in question is actually music for the eyes.

Two of my favourite photographers are the late Terry O’Neill and Gered Makowitz, both of whom came to my attention through their images of the Rolling Stones, and are interviewed here, with the latter also being a series producer and director on “ICON- Music Through the Lens”.

This series will appeal to music fans and art lovers alike and comes highly recommended.

Gig review: THE DARKER MY HORIZON – Dirty Rockers, Dudley, Saturday 24 October 2020

Rock lives, music lives but only if we support it – our small music venues are on there knees trying to survive and actually attending this gig, nearly broke this rock chick’s heart for a number of reasons…..

I have now been to a number of socially-distanced gigs and of the venues attended so far, this is was the best in terms of communications and pre-gig arrangements. We were able to book seating arrangements in advance and the interaction with Dirty Rockers was made extremely easy and smooth. I had 5 friends with me, none of which had been to the venue before – all of us were incredibly impressed, it most certainly won’t be the last time Dirty Rockers hosts us.

From arrival to departure, this was a well oiled machine, friendly, welcoming staff greeted us at the door with sanitiser and explained the rules. We were taken to a table at the front of the venue, drinks menus on the table, light system to order drinks and contactless payment in place at your table. This was the epitome of well structured venue, really doing its best to support live music in the current times, keep people employed and keep its doors open.

The Darker My Horizon were in good form and in party mode as they took to the stage, opening with their latest release ‘Sleaze’, for what was to be a rocking, packed 2 hour set. Their charisma and personality jumps off the stage at you and they clearly love performing, with the crowd showing their appreciation at every opportunity.

It was a total master class demonstration of a superb rock band playing – what a privilege to be there. Paul Stead engages with his audience and dedicated a number of songs (‘Carpe Diem’, ‘Knockin on Heaven’s Door’,'Dear Olivia’, ‘Gasoline & Opium’) showing the band really know and understand their audience and they never take their support for granted – what an absolute honour to be part of it. There was much enthusiastic chair dancing in the venue as the band bounced through the epic set list closing out with ’Still Alive’ – we are indeed, but live music needs US and it needs us now.

So why the broken heart? When I took the opportunity for a pitstop at the ladies, I had a chat with Faye and Shane – what they told me was this…. the band were playing for a split of ticket sales which given the limited capacity is unlikely to cover their costs (with probably a 150 mile plus round trip), the staff were all working for free and they hadn’t paid themselves since Covid forced them to close their doors for 3 months and then re-open with all the restrictions in place at a third of their capacity.

For the gig on Saturday, they had a waiting list for tickets and shared their frustration as they knew (as did I) that they could have sold the tickets many, many times over. This won’t be an unusual story in these times and whilst some government support has been put in place, not every venue qualifies for it as they simply haven’t been open long enough. How sad that we are condemning venues who have been brave enough to open during what was already turbulent times.

This band have been hit hard, they’ve had their Facebook page hacked, have lost 10,000 followers and 5 years worth of material – are these bands working hard enough without this happening??

Please go check them out on their YouTube channel and give them a follow on social media – I promise you, you won’t be disappointed; they are one of the hardest working bands I have ever met and they are simply the nicest bunch of guys – we are most definitely part of The Darker My Horizon family and that feels like something very, very special. If you know, you know, if you don’t give them a try!

If you can, get to a gig – the socially distanced thing is absolutely fine, yes I’d like to be packed in with my mates but I’d much rather be able to see live music than not, so if this is how we have to do it, then lets make the most of it. It is absolutely critical that we music fans show our support for the bands, the grass roots venues, employees and roadies – otherwise they simply won’t be there when you want them. If there’s no gig, go to the venue for a drink, and if you can’t get to a gig, then buy some merchandise – it all adds up.

Album review: THE LIVESAYS – The Rhythm of Love and Dysfunction

THE LIVESAYS – The Rhythm of Love and Dysfunction

Website [Release date 20.09.20]

The Livesays are a five-piece rock band fronted by the band’s namesake singer/songwriter/guitarist Billy Livesay, who spent 12 years performing, recording and touring with E-Streeter Clarence Clemons’ band Temple of Soul. Drummer Howard Goldberg was a co-founding member of funk band Rudy and the band’s line-up is completed by Laplume on bass, Victor “Cuqui” Berrios on Hammond B-3 organ, and Tim Murphy on piano.

The album was mostly completed back in 2018, with a release for early 2019 planned, however in November 2018 drummer Eddie Zyne (most noted for his work in Hall & Oates) passed away. His drumming does feature on over half of the album as a fitting tribute to his work. Fast forward to 2020 and the current global pandemic led to the band forging ahead with this album.

It is a timely release as the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen, has just released his latest album and much of this album has a Springsteen feel, be it ‘The Rhythm of Love’ or ‘There’s Something Coming Now’. They create the big band sound so beloved of the Boss, albeit less the sax playing.

The Livesays also remind me of Southside Johnny and Widespread Panic at times, whilst vocalist Billy Livesay has often been compared vocally to Don Henley. The Don Henley reference becomes very apparent when listening to the band’s take on Henley’s ‘Heart Of The Matter’. A superlative version of this classic tune. ‘Woodstock’ is the other cover on the album and the Livesays give it a timely update.

An album that will grow in stature with each subsequent listen I am sure. Finely crafted music touching on rock, blues, soul, funk and even a little pop. ***1/2

Album review: ADAM’S CURSE – What The Ancients Knew About Us

In this audio showcase, first broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, Bat Kinane talks us through his musical influences, his musical journey, and featuring his new band Adam’s Curse.

ADAM’S CURSE - What The Ancients Knew About Us

Bad Reputation [Release date 10.11.20]

Adam’s Curse is a new band formed by ex-Glyder guitarist, singer and songwriter Bat Kinane. Glyder released five albums in the noughties and toured around Europe sharing stages with the likes of Metallica, Thin Lizzy and Slash. In Adam’s Curse he is joined drummer Brendan Gilligan, who played with Bat in a thrash metal band called Cursed Earth, and bassist John Treacy. The band derives its name from the W.B. Yeats poem of the same name “Adam’s Curse”.

Opening with ‘A Vibe for Philo’ which is a homage to the annual tribute concert held in Dublin every year since Phil Lynott’s death. The concert was where Glyder had its beginnings back in 2004. The song was written the night after Bat last played the concert in 2011 as a member of the Pat McManus band. No surprise it has a Thin Lizzy sound especially in the guitar playing and a strong opening to the album.

‘Funeral of My Soul’ is an older song, written not long after Glyder split and deals with the frustration of being an artist. Listen out for the bass runs and guitar solos, wonderful listening.

If you are after a little straight ahead hard rocking, ‘Unmask Your Face’ does just that. No frills riffing as the band give both lyical barrells to the online trolls and keyboard warriors.

‘Borrowed Time’ is certainly a song for now, ‘madmen pull the strings’ and ‘Mother Earth must breathe again, or we all must face the end’ – Adam’s Curse have plenty to say lyrically. Indeed, it is a very topical album covering themes of global warming and the destruction of the planet on ‘Poison Spring’ (where it is good to see Bat Kinane’s folk side of his music and writing come to the fore) and the aforementioned ‘Borrowed time’. Speaking of folk, ‘My Canoe’ is a lovely little tune, with a 60’s vibe and perfect for a bit of daytime radio airplay.

Plenty of highlights on the album including ‘Tattoos and Loneliness’ about a girl who looks at her ink and it reminds her of her past. The slow blues nature of the song, along with a powerful bit of blues guitar playing, make this a ‘must hear’. Also the reworking of the Glyder song ‘Stargazer’ is an absolute belter. Much gentler arrangement, yet still packs a powerful punch as the original version did.

Adam’s Curse are a perfect vehicle for Bat Kinane to mix his love of the classic rock/blues sounds of Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher, with his folk leanings and story-telling talent. Yeats poem was based on the difficulty of creating something beautiful, something Adam’s Curse have succeeded in doing. You’ll be hard pushed to hear a more enjoyable and lyrically powerful album this year. ****

Review by Jason Ritchie

Bat Kinane tells us more about the album, the recording of it and the band’s future plans…

How did Adam’s Curse come together and what was/is your musical driver for the band?

John, Brendan and I have been playing in a covers band now for the past number of years.  John and I have always been into writing original material and I produced an EP of John’s original music about 2 years ago. Brendan and I go back 30 years when we played in a thrash metal band called Cursed Earth.

Since Glyder split I released a few folk albums here in Ireland for my own amusement. When lockdown happened, I found I had a lot of spare time and was listening to a lot of rock and metal so naturally I started writing rock music again.  It all started off with me filling in my time and then it grew along the way. I was blogging videos of the recording and writing process.

What was it like recording during lockdown? Is it in some ways easier to write & record as there are no gigs to arrange, no time constraints from say a label, etc.

We had been playing every weekend before lockdown in pubs and at parties etc so I found I had the energy and focus to write. When you are out gigging the last thing you want to do is start writing songs.

I was also only in my day job every second day so rather than sit around and be bored I decided to do something positive and creative with my time. In the end it consumed every minute of my time often twelve hours a day. The lads did their parts at home and emailed them to me. It was all very easy really.

The album has many valid and interesting lyrical themes. ‘Unmask Your Face’ deals with the online world and keyboard warriors for want of a better phrase. How do you think music can get across a more tolerant message on the use of social media or is it a bit of a lost cause, with many people seemingly happy to stay within their own social online bubbles.

I found at the start of lockdown I was beginning to rant on Facebook about things that were happening especially the covid thing, cancel culture etc Ranting on social media is not a positive thing.

Rather than become a keyboard warrior I decided to have a go at keyboard warriors and vent my frustration through my music. Really what ‘Unmask Your Face’ is about is people who work in the media who decide what needs to be cancelled like say the Germans in Fawlty Towers being censored by the BBC.

The people in the media who decide that a statue should be taken down, then the people on Twitter stirring the pot, the erasing of history because someone finds it offensive.

History is important and if we start to rewrite or erase it we are setting a dangerous precedent that will eventually end up with book burning, The far left are as bad as the far right, we need a little moderation. I think the world is a very angry and dangerous place right now and I have a genuine fear of what is coming down the line.

‘A Vibe For Philo’ will certainly please the Thin Lizzy and more traditional rock fans. Phil Lynott has been a big musical influence on your music and songwriting. What is it that makes his songs so timeless, as they still sound good today and not dated like some artists & their songs do.

Phil Lynott was the reason I started to play music. He had everything, the lyrics, the voice, the rock star look, the musicianship. I really identified with him. As a teenager Thin Lizzy was everything to me.

What makes Thin Lizzy so special is the song writing. Phil Lynott was a storyteller, a great one too. A great story never grows old. What is wrong with a lot of modern music is the art of storytelling is gone. Some bands’ lyrics are so random and only make sense to the person who wrote them, I’m not interested in those.  Great storytelling is timeless.

What are the plans for the next few months for Adam’s Curse and all being well, what sort of live activity may we see from the band next year?

Well we have to be realistic. I want to see how this album is received. If people like it then we may get to do some gigs, but time will tell. I would like to follow up with another album and try developing the band a bit more.

Musically the album goes in a few different directions and some people have been critical of that aspect of it so it might take another album or two for us to settle into what we do. I am confident that there are some great tunes on the album, and I think they will come across very well live.

Also we have to consider the pandemic and if a vaccine is successful there will be a lot of bands out there looking to play so it will be very competitive, really if the demand is there and people want to see us play live we will do it.

How did you hook up with Bad Reputation? Is it for this album or have you signed for a multi-album deal?

I kept in touch with Eric Coubard who owns the label over the years, He signed the first two Glyder albums and helped us get our name out there. After Glyder split I recommended a few bands to him over the years.

When I recorded ‘A Vibe For Philo’ and ‘Tattoos and Loneliness’ I decided to send them to Eric as I felt they would fit perfectly into his label. He got straight back and said he would release the album.

I was delighted as it gave me the opportunity to be a proper recording artist again and do what I love doing. Eric has an amazing distribution network and I’m excited that the album is available all over the world. I guess for the label how this album does will determine if there will be a follow up on Bad Reputation. Hopefully we will, we can only take it a step at a time!

On the album the Glyder song ‘Stargazer’ gets a new musical lease of life and sounds different, yet familiar at the same time (if that makes sense!). What made you want to re-record that song? Any plans to perhaps re-record other Glyder songs?

When the album was almost complete, I needed one more tune so I decided to use Stargazer.  I think that song fitted the vibe of the album and it’s a strong song, the style that I think we should follow.

I won’t be revisiting any other Glyder songs in the future. I wrote that song 5 years before Glyder began and it’s a personal song so I have a connection with it. When the album was near completion I decided ‘What Live Matter’ was going to be pulled off the album, I wasn’t happy with it.

So I decided to add ‘My Canoe’ and ‘Funeral of My Soul’ which are old songs I wrote. Then I was confused, Brendan our drummer said throw them all in, which I did so it’s a bit of a gamble really. On the positive side there are many styles on the album and what appeals to one listener may not appeal to another. But I am confident that there is something for any rock fan on the album.

What sort of live music scene do you think we will see from next year, given that we won’t see anything bar streamed shows this year and maybe the odd indoor gig.

The latest I’m reading is you won’t be able to buy a ticket now without a vaccine. It is all very Orwellian and it seems like things that would be passed off as conspiracy theories are indeed becoming real. I don’t really know what the end result will be, anyone’s guess is as good as mine. However, I think people, especially older rock fans, will be very careful about large congregations while the younger generation will be more inclined to group together. There will be winners and losers in this and only time will tell.

Message for your fans and anything else to add…

Please check out our album and if you have the money please buy a CD, Spotify is not helping anyone. Thanks again Jason for supporting my music ever since you gave Glyder their very first UK gig in Brentford back in 2005!

EP review: MADRE SUN – The Speed of Light

MADRE SUN – The Speed of Light

Facebook [Release date24.07.20]

Madre Son was formed by brothers Eduardo (bass, vocals) and Matt Cavina (guitar), along with guitarist Tyson Schenker (son of Michael). They are joined on the EP by drummer Flipi Stipp. They certainly have rock pedigree and recording this, their debut EP, over a ten day stint at a studio in Cambridge.

Eduardo Cavina has a rough ‘n’ ready vocal style, perfect for the fast and furious ‘Speed Of Light’. Tyson Schenker certainly lets fly on the guitar solos on this one (he used a Flying V for some of the guitar parts on the EP). Lyrically strong too with this song being about the speed at which we live our lives and hwo quickly they pass us by.

It may only be a five song EP but Madre Sun look to have plenty of ideas as the chugging, almost grunge like ‘Puzzle’ proves. Loving the drums and bass playing on this one. Tighter than the proverbial gnat’s chuff!

Madre Sun have the classic rock riffs mixed with the more modern sounding rock of the Foo Fighters and Alter Bridge. Impressive start and definitely a band with the potential to make big impression in the rock n roll world. ***1/2

Album review: BLUE OYSTER CULT – The Symbol Remains

BLUE OYSTER CULT – The Symbol Remains

Frontiers [Release date 09.10.20]

Born of the time of Covid, Blue Oyster Cult’s first album in 20 years, “The Symbol Remains”, announces the band as born again survivors. And indeed survivors who, thank god, haven’t neglected entertainment for the sake of their rock’n'roll art.

The competitive drive of original members, Buck Dharma and Eric Bloom, ultimately overcame two decades of studio inertia. Face to face conferencing and long distance technology allowed the tracks they had laid down before the virus to be completed. They were subsequently mixed and mastered by Tom (Stones/Gabriel/Manson) Lord-Alge.

For those who don’t know the band (maybe been leading a subterranean existence for the last 50 years), this bunch has seen it all and done it all, several times. Even the new boys, Richie Castellano, Jules Radino and Danny Miranda have been the band’s rock solid rhythm section for many years now.

And what the twanging, clanging, macho swagger of openers ‘That Was Me’ and ‘Box In My Head’ tell you is that the evolution of BOC’s rock has always been impervious to outside influences.

The arching melodies, the endless panorama and ambition of their lyrical landcape… it’s all intact. It’s no coincidence that the dusty, country boy rock of ‘Lennie’s Song’ obliquely references Steinbeck. And while ‘The Machine’ sucks us in to the cultural vacuum of today’s technology, ‘Stand And Fight’s grubby hybrid of rock and metal suggests they’re up for the idea of primal responses to today’s realities, rather than intellectual ones.

Key track, ‘Tainted Blood’ goes a step further, upping the drama, building to a Nouvelle Chanson theatricality. The intensely poetic lyrics of this and other tracks – ‘Nightmare Epiphany’, ‘The Alchemist’ – still remain a unique approach in the world of classic rock.

They may be treading familiar ground, but there’s a welcome freshness here. Often, this new music seems like a series of hi-def colour photos compared to the monochrome snapshots of … “The Curse Of The Hidden Mirror” and “Heaven Forbid”, their last 2 studio albums.

For a band who survived the hedonistic, life shortening heights of fame, a seen-it-all, done-it-all mindset would have been understandable. But the fact that they are still going strong, writing and recording truly great rock music is cause for quiet celebration. *****

Album review: STARDUST – Highway To Heartbreak

STARDUST – Highway To Heartbreak

Frontiers [Release date 09.10.20]

Debut album from (very) talented newcomers, Stardust.

In the world inhabited by melodic rock fans, very good pastiches of Eighties’ AOR get the utmost respect. The era’s distinctively polished, precision calibrated, hook heavy hard rock is so deeply ingrained in the psyches of genre fans that they need only hear an approximation of that sound to send them into raptures. Others find it hard to see the point.

Those very same fans will judge the opening two tracks to be an uncertain start, but they’ll vigorously agree that from there, Stardust have successfully crafted an album of songs that hit the AOR target, sometimes with laser guided accuracy, as on ‘Bullet To My Heart’ and ‘Shout It Out’. In each case the chorus is more than a pastiche. Yes, they are nods to the past, each gilded with deep fried harmonies and a naggingly familiar hook, but both are lit up by sparks of originality.

Moving up a level, ‘Second Hand Love’ and ‘Cant Stop Loving You’ are different class melodic rock songs. Both tracks, equiped with magnificently recurring guitar motifs, rise to a beautifully understated chorus, respectively recalling Def Leppard and The Storm. Stuff like this effortlessly captures and indeed amplifies the sound of an era. And does so without losing itself in a long identity parade of substandard, lookalike radio rock songs from the Eighties. Where you just can’t pick out one from the other.

Album standout (by some distance) is ‘Perfect Obsession’, a song with a keen, commercial edge that goes a step further. It expertly merges rock, pop and country into a discrete, identifiable sub genre with a wide demographic appeal. By driving a big ol’ AOR truck down Nashville’s country roads, Stardust, almost by accident, might just end up securing entry to a lucrative (if very competitive) market. ***1/2

Album review: THE COMPULSIONS – Ferocious

THE COMPULSIONS – Ferocious

Indie  [Release date 13.11.20]

The Compulsions have a long pedigree of fine musicians from the likes GnR to the New York Dolls to Bowie, and it shows – this is rock n roll at its finest and the album proves Rob Carlyle, singer/songwriter, will not be defeated in his mission to deliver roots rock to the masses, despite changes to the line up and a 5 year gap between albums.

‘Ferocious’ delivers track after track of dirty, roots original rock which is contagious and fun, with a blend of metal, rhythm and blues and country rock influences, this album flies on every level. Carlyle’s vocals and lyrics are superb with a real gravelly edge that just transports me to imagining this band playing live, in a real grass roots music venue with the audience lapping up every riff, beat and chorus.

My pick of the tracks …tough choice, they’re all good! However, I really loved Ferocious, Band of Thieves and Dirt Bag Blues which sums up rock n roll!

There are 2 covers on the album which have been reinterpreted and reinvented with great energy – Dead Flowers (originally The Rolling Stones) and Dust n Bones (originally GnR)

Carlyle explains the choice of covers on Ferocious: “Ever since I started The Compulsions, the idea was to create a sound that lives somewhere between The Stones and GN’R. Like if you put Sticky Fingers and Appetite for Destruction in a blender. So, this time around, I thought let’s just spell it out for people by actually covering those two bands. I’ve always loved ‘Dead Flowers’ and ‘Dust N’ Bones,’ anyway, and I had a pretty good idea of how to put our own spin on those songs.”

Both covers are immense and I think I prefer them to the originals – great work by The Compusions as that’s no mean feat.

I defy anyone not to like this album … I for one, would be queueing up to see The Compulsions live and to shake Rob Carlyle’s hand for his latest rock n roll  masterpiece – long may this line up continue! ****

Album review: DORIS BRENDEL & LEE DUNHAM – Mass Hysteria

DORIS BRENDEL & LEE DUNHAM - Mass Hysteria

Sky Rocket Records [Release date 01.09.20]

A new Doris Brendel album is a bit like Christmas coming early.  That moment when your Aunty Doris invites you to dip blindfold into a tub of Quality Street, only to discover she’s mixed in several handfuls of Heroes and Celebrations for good measure.

Since 2012 her regular ‘partner in crime’ has been guitarist and producer Lee Dunham and Mass Hysteria is their fourth studio album together.  This time, for the first time, using the same set of musicians for the entire album – Sam White on drums, Jacob Stoney on keys, and Ewan McIntosh on bass, with John Mitchell (Lonely Robot/It Bites and a hundred and one other projects) mixing and mastering.

These two factors bring a more cohesive vibe to affairs than on previous outings, but as with any Brendel release it’s as well to expect the unexpected.  And Mass Hysteria is no different – from the opening hard hitting blues rocker ‘Takes One To Know One’ (one that would give Blues Pills more than a run for their money and surely destined as a future crowd pleaser), the excellent ‘Gary Moore’ style slow blues of ‘It’s Never Too Late’, and the jazz infused Bond/Bassey-ish title track – it’s a non-stop rollercoaster ride.

At the risk of repeating myself from earlier reviews, vocally Brendel falls very much into Sam Brown territory.  Quirky, with the same husky tones and god-sent ability to let rip a wail that would stop a clock at 30 paces.  And like Sam, you’ll find her highly regarded by rock royalty – most recently providing backing vocals on Fish’s latest opus Weltschmerz.  Mass Hysteria finds her in very fine vocal fettle.

And while previous outings have embraced a cornucopia of styles, Mass Hysteria never strays too far away from rock.  That’s not to say Messrs Brendel and Dunham don’t some throw curve balls into the mix – there’s Celtic (and Brown) undertones to ‘You Took My Breath Away’ replete with more evocative guitar work from Dunham, a power ‘ballad’ – ‘You’re Everything’, ‘It Can Only Get Better’ (one of three, CD only, bonus tracks) veers towards pop with a big, infectious chorus that you could easily imagine Bonnie Tyler belting out, and there’s Eastern threads to the sumptuous ‘Other Side Of The World’ (another stand out).

But no Doris Brendel release would be complete without the odd proggy twist thrown into the mix.  And usually when you least expect it.  The broody ‘Wrong Time Wrong Place’ is a typical example, another powerful number but with a chaotic, bewildering mid-section break that leave you thinking ‘where the f*** did that just come from?’  It’s enough to make you press replay just to be certain your ears didn’t deceive you.

But then she goes and closes the set with three relatively ‘straight’ numbers – the powerful ‘Take Me To The Edge’ (more great vocal and guitar work), ‘Hard Heart’ – a song you could imagine someone like Céline Dion taking to the top of the charts in years gone by, and the anthemic rallying call ‘The People Are Going To Rise Up’ – a future live set closer?

It all adds up to Mass Hysteria being Brendel’s most focused, consistent, and powerful offering in a decade.  A seriously impressive album, and one that rewards repeated listens.  ****

Book review: Noise Damage by James Kennedy

Eye Books [Publication date 18.10.20]

I’ve not just got a passing interest in rock autobiographies. I positively devour them. Pretty much anyone I admire who puts one out these days will tend to end up on my reading list sharpish. Usually, though, it’s people whose careers I follow, whose albums I buy and whose concerts I go to. James Kennedy is none of these.

I was vaguely aware of his former band Kyshera but they were around at a time when I was insanely busy in my work life and any downtime would be spent listening to familiar favourites rather than seeking out new bands. To be honest I had to google Kyshera to give myself any idea of what they sounded like or, indeed, who the aforementioned Mr Kennedy actually is. His memoir turned out to be every bit as gripping as those of my heroes, however.

Born in 1980, Kennedy is a talented kid from a poor background in South Wales. “I am thankful for having cultured, lefty, weed-smoking atheists for parents, continually blasting out Pink Floyd, Zappa, Kate Bush and Stevie Ray Vaughan,” he shares with us, nicely dispelling those tedious one-dimensional caricatures of working class culture that are constantly being sold to us by Red Wall-chasing Tory politicians these days.

Kennedy then finds himself entering a world of professional music at a time when the traditional industry model as we knew it was rapidly imploding. He is not one to get nostalgic for the old ways, however. Fairly early on in the book he sets out his stall thus:

“We have the ability to create, record, produce, release and promote our art, all from our bedroom with no interference, censorship or bullshit from any third parties, and share it with the world for hardly any cost. How we make any money doing this is the new problem.”

The subsequent two-thirds of Noise Damage is then pretty much devoted to that very problem of not making any money. From heinous scams by criminal promoters to unfeasible hours holding down a multiplicity of jobs Kennedy paints a detailed picture of a life that, while bursting with creativity, friendship and critical acclaim on the one hand, gets worn down by years of grim conditions, constant back-stabbings and an absence of anything approaching stability on the other.

The book is an absolute must-read for anyone attempting a career in music (certainly anyone without wealthy parents or an independent income). However, there’s enough self-reflection, critical evaluation and good-natured humility to make this a genuinely powerful testimony on a highly personal level. Noise Damage is Kennedy’s first book. Let’s finally hope he makes some money out of it.  ****

Rising Stars: JESSICA LYNN

In this special, first broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, Jessica discusses her musical influences and plays several exclusive tracks.

Rising country crossover star Jessica Lynn has recently released her latest single ‘Love Me That Way’,  which is now available to download and stream from all digital platforms. Like many artists she has had to reschedule live dates until next year and we asked her about her touring plans, new album and more…

How’s the new single Love Me That Way doing? Have you been pleased with the reaction to it?

I have been so blown away by the incredible support on this song! There is always a lot of anxiety that comes with a release for me in terms of how it will be received and if it will do as well as the last one.  I cannot believe we are almost up to 50k streams on Spotify alone as well as on the live video we released on social media for the song from our livestream concert in only 2 weeks.  Thank you all so much!

When is your debut album planned for? You’ve released two EPs to date. Will these get a reissue with the album?

We are planning to release the entire album on April 30th, only a few days before our world tour, starting in the UK!  They will not get a reissue because this album is 13 brand new songs that I’d really like to highlight and I really can’t wait for everyone to hear it.  I’m extremely proud of how it is coming out so far.

Do you find it more nowadays a single driven market due to the popularity of streaming?

Oh definitely!  Streaming has become the thing to do but I did feel that at this point in my career, after years of touring and singles, that it was time to put out something more substantial.

How did the Amazon Prime concert come about? Do you look to play your usual set or maybe include a couple of covers for people unfamiliar with your music?

The 2 concerts that I just released on Amazon Prime have aired here in America on national television.  They have also aired on Sky TV in the UK.  One is a full-band big concert in a huge theatre with dancers, etc. and the latest one, “Jessica Lynn – Live at Dramatic Hall”  is a stripped-down acoustic storytelling special of songs that really mean something to me personally.  I recommend watching both as they are totally different with all different music.  They were so much fun to create.

What can UK fans expect on your tour next year?

UK fans can expect a live presentation of the new record as well as a super high-energy show with a lot of audience participation.  I cannot wait to get back on the road again.  I miss it so much.

What have been the live highlights to date for you and why?

There are so many it is really hard to pick!  Every single place brings something so unique and special to my journey that it is very hard to compare them to choose a favourite.  One that really sticks out to me is a club in Munich, Germany.  I performed there on my very first European tour and had 8 people in the audience.  We went back 2 years later and sold it out.  It was a very emotional moment for me to see how far I had come.

How have you been coping with lockdown? Has it made you more or less creative do you feel?

I made the decision as soon as the lockdown started to make the most of it and to not let it beat me.  We lost a lot.  A 12+ country tour of 80+ dates.  It was extremely devastating.

The minute I knew the tour wasn’t happening we started to update our cameras and our lighting and look for ways to build my online presence.  I was doing up to 6 livestreams a week at one point.

It made me feel so good to be able to bring entertainment to people during this time and to connect with my fans in a whole new way.  I have to say that I have really enjoyed it.  I was reaching about 500k people a month on my facebook page prior to the pandemic and I just reached 13 million this month.  It has been a really wild and exciting ride.

Country music is on the up and up, particularly in the UK. Why do you think that is? What for you makes a good country song?

I think country music is so well received by people because it is real music.  Real stories, real instruments being played, and real heart to go along with it.  That’s what makes it so fantastic.  Even as a New Yorker, country music wasn’t prevalent as I was growing up, but I connected so much with the honesty and the stories in it.  This is perhaps why I connect so much with the UK audiences. We are the same, connecting through a music that was not so popular where we were raised.

Message for your fans…

Thank you all so much for your incredible support doing this very difficult time.  I will remember it forever and I cannot wait to see you all in person.  Thanks for having me guys!

Album review: PARA LIA – Gone With The Flow

PARA LIA – Gone With The Flow

Independent [Release date 02.10.20]

German husband and wife team, Rene and Cindy Methner are Para Lia, now on their second album.

Pop, Electronica, Indie Rock, alt.rock, alt.pop, Dark Wave, New Wave, Old Wave?

In fact, it’s all of the above. But not as we know them. On this recording they skilfully straddle the blurry line between sub genres, falling on the side of Art Rock. If for no other reason than the fact the album is a collaboration with New York visual artist Louis Renzoni. In some cases, art inspires the music, and in others, vice versa. It’s a familiar relationship in pop culture.

That “artistic interpretation” gives them the freedom to be a little more innovative and a shade edgier. Still, they know that a well crafted tune is always the key – the clanging, hooky openers ‘My Muse’ and ‘Fade To Grey’ tell you all you need to know – the right production sound can thrust your music into the here and now, but a memorable melody is timeless.

Sometimes you might feel that it’s all just a bit too tailored, too honed, too carefully contoured, then the unusual structures of songs like ‘Children Of The Flood’ and ‘Riders On The Dike’, full of little shards of light, and a weird dissonance building in the background, create an atmosphere of anticipation

But more often it’s that very composure and confidence that makes “Riders on The Dike” so compelling. Methner is a restless songwriter and seems always to be searching for that defining moment, and that searching is what gives this album its momentum.

He gets close on ‘Kassandra’, a track underpinned by busy, beefy guitars which occasionally launch into tangled, serpentine runs. Sung by Cindy Methner, who sounds like like Joni Mitchell gone Gothic. No bad thing. And ‘No Time For Butterflies’, an explosive protest song with suitably lacerating axe work, and sharp lyrics that draw blood. As the closing track, it’s a fitting finish to the album.

Renzoni’s latest exhibition, originally scheduled to open in NY in October, then onto Berlin and London, soundtracked by Para Lia’s music, is now subject to a bespoke online setup ***1/2
