Book review: STEVE HACKETT – A Genesis In My Bed

STEVE HACKETT - A Genesis In My Bed

Wymer Publishing [Publication date 24.07.20]

It was perhaps inevitable: riding the crest of the prog resurgence, repurposing classic Genesis in front of insatiable crowds, and making well received solo albums.  And now, the book!

Steve Hackett traces his journey from a youngster in Pimlico, jumping schools, to joining one of the biggest seventies bands and his more recent solo successes.

The first 50 or so pages deal with his childhood, that’s about a third of what is a fairly short account.  The key aspects are that Steve was initially attracted to the harmonica before his musical Dad gave him his first acoustic guitar at the age of 12.  The rest as they say is history as he joined Quiet World in 1970 and then advertised in Melody Maker for a position in a band “to strive beyond existent stagnant musical forms”.

The main attractions of an autobiography for fans is to fill in some of the already known detail or to learn new facts about their hero.  However in Steve’s journey it is what is left out that is the more intriguing.

So whilst we get to learn that he has a strong spiritual interest that has influenced his music, and even practises the power of spiritual healing, he leaves out some critical detail of the last decade.

His divorce from Kim Poor in 2008 (they married in 1981) is only skated over, but the related bust up with manager Billy Budis was widely reported in the press at the time and a legal battle for song rights ensued which Hackett eventually won.  The case was significant in that it had the potential to impact other creatives in a similar (divorce) situation.  There is also no mention that Poor supplied the unique artwork for many album covers.  She’s also absent in the index.

By the last chapter, there is a tendency to name-check his current associates and how great they are which doesn’t really enhance understanding of our guitar hero and seems like padding.

Guitar nerds will not pick up too much detail about his technique, equipment, or approach to playing the instrument although some of his musical philosophy does get stated.  Perhaps an appendix at the end of the book could have covered this as it could otherwise distract from the delightfully uncomplicated narrative.

It reminds us also that Hackett has released several exquisite acoustic albums, not least ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Metamorpheus’ with orchestra.  A complete and updated discography (including session work) would have been another welcome addition.

A book for fans, definitely, as Steve provides some background to both Genesis and his solo works.  His reasons for leaving Genesis are well known but we learn that Mike Rutherford threw a paddy (and a bass guitar) at a soundcheck in 1976 and effectively curtailed Hackett’s idea of a joint band/solo career in the late 1970s.  Rutherford was also cited in influencing the television documentary that played down Hackett’s solo career.  I think Hackett misses the opportunity to expand on his frustration.

He is very polite when referencing the band members, and connected especially with another free spirit Peter Gabriel.  Hackett emphasises the difference in the band members’ backgrounds, juxtaposing his own working class upbringing in the London smog (which may have aggravated a chest condition) with the gentrified existence of Charterhouse expats.

As we mentioned in our own summary recently (link below), Hackett is a genuinely nice guy for the most part guided by his music and this is reflected in his autobiography.  If there are few real revelations, it may be still be shocking to some that he is three times married, at times suffered from a lack of self-confidence and even stage fright, entertained groupies (the book title refers),  and has dabbled in cocaine.  Ste – phen!!

He has evidently eschewed the real excesses of rock and roll, and not least survived the vagaries of the industry and especially the late-1970s when record labels reorientated themselves towards punk and new wave.  There was little time then for erudite prog rockers.

This book will do nothing to detract from a career that continues to delight audiences whilst – in the nicest way possible – milking the Genesis cash cow.

Album review: ENUFF ZNUFF – Brainwashed Generation

ENUFF ZNUFF – Brainwashed Generation

Frontiers Records [Release date 10.07.20]

There was a time Enuff Z’Nuff’s lineup seemed to go into an endless revolving door spin, but now, with founding member Donnie Vie apparently leaving for good, Chip Z’Nuff has assembled a solid, talented line up. Guitarist Alex (Little Caesar/Shark Island) Kane and producer, engineer, guitarist, Tory Stoffregen, and drummer, Daniel Benjamin Hill have all been with the band a while now. There’s an interesting sprinkling of guests too…Steve Ramone, Mike Portnoy, Ace Frehley and others.

It’s a tight, tight combo, who’ve learned, under Chip’s tutelage perhaps, that in the world of rock’n'roll, less is often much, much more.

The band’s 2018 recording, “Diamond Boy”, was designed to shift the commercial emphasis onto a new generation of rock fans. It worked, pushing the album into the UK and US Indie charts. The writing was razor sharp (thanks to the overdue return of Znuff’s mojo), the production tight, the performances deft and collusive. Clearly, some bitter lessons were learned over many years of unremarkable albums.

New album, “Brainwashed Generation” is much better than its dated title suggests.

‘I Got My Money Where My Mouth Is’ is a beautifully pieced together poprock concerto. ‘Help’ (not that one) matches up. Its misplaced rush of pop optimism comes with a steely spine and White Album/Abbey Road harmonies, and like several others, it’s full of the band’s sonic signatures – unexpected chord changes, meticulously crafted hooks and a simplicity of phrasing.

Built on one of ZNuff’s sublime, down-shifting chord sequences, ‘Fatal Distraction’ isn’t far behind. It tilts the Difford/Tillbrook Squeeze axis to the point that a wonderful tune and some entertaining wordplay come tumbling out.

Z’Nuff shunts us down a few sidings from time to time, where we can enjoy watching the passing traffic – ‘It’s All In Vain’ and ‘Stranger In My Head’ have an easy going, pedestrian gait – then suddenly we’re hooked up to ‘Drugland Weekend’s dive down the (White) Rabbit hole, and ‘Go’. Any song that can rhyme Shark, Oligarch and Patriarch deserves a mention.

But the album’s standout track, by some distance has to be ‘Broken Love’. Wrapped round a slender melody, it’s not a love song as we know it, but a sweetly and softly sung lament, as Z’Nuff mourns his late brother. We may be tired of the comparisons the media makes when describing EZN’s albums, but songs like this one sound like ELO or the Beatles extrapolated to their logical essence … just a tune, a lyric, and a mood, all merged into a four minute magic spell. That’s how it’s done. ****1/2

Album review: NORMAN BEAKER – Running Down The Clock

Pete Feenstra chatted to Norman Beaker about his music and the new album for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 5 July 2020.

Norman Beaker - Running Down The Clock

Clock Records [Release date 24.07.20]

It’s almost a shock to realise that this album celebrates Norman’s 50th anniversary.

And while on reflection it does feel like he’s been around for years, he’s too often been an unsung hero of the British blues scene and this album acts as a pleasant reminder of just how good he is.

When not busy releasing a stream of consistently good solo albums, he’s been busy working with a wide range of players including long time associates Larry Garner and Chris Farlowe.

‘Running Down the Clock’ (50th celebration year) is a double album on which the 18 tracks play to Beaker’s strengths. He’s a delightful guitar player who revels in an array of tones within different styles. He’s also a gritty vocalist and a thoughtful songwriter.

He injects real vitality into a succession of songs with enough deep grooves, steely riffs and catchy hooks to keep you coming back for more.

It’s all there on the bustling riff driven title track that could be Tommy Castro. It’s essentially a lyrical and musical celebration of what he does so well.

He’s a player’s player who moves effortlessly from being an integral band member to an accomplished front man, with impassioned vocals and a sinewy guitar style.

The key to it all is the way he locks in with this rhythm section to create a seamless flow that glues together a series of different tempos within the blues genre.

The album’s sequencing also cleverly integrates contrasting tracks without losing sight of a coherent whole, in a welcome old school nod to album structure.

‘Running Down The Clock’ crosses over blues into blues rock, country rock, blues ballads and boogie, none of which are ever too far removed from a groove laden shuffle.

He opens with his best effort the majestic ‘Take Me To Your Pleasured Dome’. His lived-in vocal style is counter-weighted by an intricately woven guitar lines over a whip crack rhythm section.

The resulting melodic sweep generates the kind of momentum that levers us into an album bristling with frisson and commitment.

Everything is built from the ground up as bassist John Price and the relentless drive of drummer Leo Anjelkavic provides the kind of energy that is fuel to Beaker’s fire.

The album’s subtle dynamics and snappy hooks facilitate a relentless flow that drips with the authority of a blues veteran for whom the passing years have failed to dampen his enthusiasm and innate ability.

‘Running Down The Clock’ draws on all his musical influences, including autobiographical narratives such as the blues ballad ‘What We Do For The Blues’. His husky voiced world-weary feel is boosted by harmony vocals on the chorus to give the song extra depth.

‘She Heals My Soul’ has a similar sensibility and illustrates his musical versatility and real feel. And it’s his ability to make an emotional connection in different shades of the blues that makes this album so accessible.

Listen for example, to the funky muscular shuffle beat ofMaking It Up’ on which his growled out vocal references social media. It’s a lyrical theme that he extends on the heavy duty ‘Digital Curse’: “The more I look the less I see, this world has lost its reality, we rely too much on this computer age, but we’re all out of touch we just don’t engage.”

His guitar lines evoke the song’s lyrical meaning perfectly. He adds a double guitar line with contrasting tones to build up a subtle tension that he partially resolves with a short opening solo.

It’s a hypnotic track with an effective stop-time chorus and an extended second solo that brings the song to a sharp ending. This in turn serves to create a short unfulfilled void that is quickly filled by the rocking ‘My Great Escape’.

Beaker’s contrasting croaky vocals and clean guitar lines are an essential part of  uplifting track that is another album highlight.

You could argue the album is slightly overblown, but that would be to overlook the lightness of touch of the JJ Cale, and Mark Knopfler influenced ‘Take It Or Leave It’. He also finds room for a brace of country rockers, of which the straight-to-the -vein hook of ‘In Your Hands’ could be Delbert McClinton meets George Harrison, while ‘KOD’ also benefits from a punchy chorus.

Then there’s ‘Long Before You Came Along’, a tough ZZ Top style boogie with a tinge of Bo Diddley.

He also dips into three related meditative tracks of which the Bossa feel of ‘Summer Song’ benefits from an unexpected uplifting electric piano part, while ‘Lady Of The Moon’ is full of tonal textures.

‘Heart Of Stone’ is cut from the same cloth, with an aching vocal over an acoustic wash offset by understated electric squalls.

He rounds things off with ‘She Comes With A Warning’, a slice of jumping r&b with added blues harp which could be one of his major influences The Pretty Things.

And so there you have it, 18 tracks worth of everything that is great about Norman Beaker, a master of his craft doing what he does best in a suitably celebratory mode. ****

EP review: LAURA EVANS – Running Back To You

LAURA EVANS - Running Back To You

Rosie Music [Release date 31.07.20]

Laura Evans has released a couple of singles earlier this year – the EP’s title track and ‘Drag Me Back In’ – both of which are on this five song EP. Laura Evans has been earning her live stripes too, having appeared at country festivals and supporting the Shires.

Musically she sets her stall out between country and blues, with a lovely soulful vocal that reminds you of Stevie Nicks at times.

‘Drag Me Back In’ has a nice bluesy feel, showcasing her rockier vocals. The sound is spot on thanks to Josiah J Manning, keyboardist and music producer for the Kris Barras Band. It is always a treat to hear each instrument clearly in the mix.

‘Running Back To You’ has already done well on the country charts and you can see why, given the song’s strong melody. This one and ‘Aberdare’ show Laura Evans’ country side off well. ‘Aberdare’ works really well, as given the sound and gentle guitar, you’d think it was a song based around a town in the US, instead of being about a town in Wales! Nicely done and again the production and musical backing is top notch.

‘Mess Of Me’ is interesting, as Laura Evans goes down the ballader route, just her vocal and piano for much of the song. Another song that could make radio or playlists.

The EP closes with an acoustic version of ‘Running Back To You’.

Laura Evans is a rising star that’s for sure, who can appeal to both the country and blues markets. Her songs have the appeal to be played on daytime radio with plenty of crossover appeal. ****

Album review: WHITESNAKE – The Rock Album: MMXX

WHITESNAKE - The Rock Album MMXX

Rhino [Release date 19.06.20]

Part one of a remastered trio (the Red White & Blue trio), this compilation goes back to 1984’s Slide It In and takes in rock tracks of Ol’ Cov’s catalogue since, all given a 2020 remix.

The forthcoming red vinyl release is the love songs, while the blue will be the blues.

A British institution, although the band is now more American, Whitesnake, fronted by the former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale, have continued to record and tour, and despite the obvious ageing of the vocal chords, we’ve still had some more than decent songs over the years. Since moving from the blues roots to hard rock this compilation takes us back to the transition point of 1984’s Slide It In (the Sykes/Murray US remix), and from the MTV album (1987’s ‘Whitesnake’) when sales rocketed.

The catalogue is full of great tracks, especially when they rock out, as this album does. Who can argue with tracks like ‘Still Of The Night’ or (one of the highlights) ‘All Or Nothing’? You can’t, essential rock listening. The tracks were hard, heavy, solid and bright before the new mix and master, and the sound is fantastic.

‘Love Ain’t No Stranger’ is a wonderful song, and the rock reworking of ‘Here I Go Again’ too. In some cases the new mix adds extra guitars (in the case of ‘All Or Nothing’ included on the original multi track but not used at the time).

The album takes us up to 2019’s ‘Flesh And Blood’, and includes the previously unreleased song ‘Always The Same’.

The sound is fantastic, but much is down to the listener, some may not like the remix (some verge on a reimagination of). But what is lovely, is the package. This 2LP on 180g white vinyl, in an embossed gatefold sleeve, it’s a lovely thing to hold before we even start. Inside the gatefold each track is annotated, this is done with Coverdale’s full involvement. A lyric insert too, what’s not to love?

In some cases the remix is a lot more (or less) noticeable than in others. Coverdale wanting to bring out the best of each track, or a cynical cash in? Well, the music is good, the package is wonderful.

I’ll savour this on the feel, the vinyl and the track by track annotation alone. ****1/2

Album review: TOBY JEPSON & THE TRUTH – Ignorance Is Bliss

TOBY JEPSON & THE TRUTH – Ignorance is Bliss

Website [Release date 13.07.20]

Toby Jepson is a national treasure and one of the finest musicians, songwriters and producers in the country. From his time fronting Little Angels, his successful solo career, stints with Fastway, Gun and Dio Disciples through to the current band, Wayward Sons, his great talent has always shone through.

This new release is a very welcome 25th anniversary reissue of his first post L.A. album and it is not only an outstanding album but also incredibly prescient, its themes echoing as strongly today as they did then.

Opener ‘Some People Are More Equal Than Others’ really hits the ground running, its great modern rock thrust carrying the Orwellian lyrics along in a striking and urgent manner. Musically, Jepson is never content to sit still and whilst the album most definitely is stamped throughout firmly with his identity, there is a breadth of styles that shows his reach and mastery of his craft.

It could never be said that he’s oblique in his meaning too as very few artists wear their heart on their sleeves as obviously or well, the socially aware and passionate lyrics clear throughout. There’s touches of Pearl Jam and Nirvana grunge in the heartbreaking ‘Better Off Without Me’ and ‘Slipping Through Your Fingers’ hits just as hard emotionally and the guitar work is ferocious in its intense commitment.

There is a more relaxed, but equally sharply focused, pace to ‘Haven’t Got Your Strength’ and ‘The Wind Blows Hard’ is a heartfelt rocker that features a phenomenal solo as it fades out. As befits an artist of Jepson’s stature, gems are scattered throughout the album and you get the feeling that history will surely mark him out to be one of the great songwriters and lyricists of his generation.

This isn’t pure hyperbole, but a reflection of his work and quality runs through it from those early fiery days when Little Angels emerged out of Scarborough as five young guys determined to take on the world through to the present with Wayward Sons.

Emotionally speaking, this release was recorded at a time of great transition and uncertainty, the band he’d fronted having played their last show at the Royal Albert Hall and having to deal with constantly shifting sands in his life outside of music as anchors were slipping in all directions.

With all this going on ‘Ignorance Is Bliss’ seemed to give both an outlet for all this and a focus on something he knew, echoing works like ‘Let It Be’, ‘Rumours’ and ‘The Visitors’ where The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and ABBA turned these elements into gold.

‘All Heal In Time’ is a shuffling acoustic delight and ‘I Won’t Be With You’ starts off with the sweeping grandeur of a James Bond theme before Bon Jovi style hooks with dirt under their fingernails take over. Similarly, ‘Save Me From Myself’ is all rolling and brave landscape-filling widescreen commercial rock that speaks about the break-up of his former band that is swiftly followed by the acoustic kaleidoscope that is ‘Out of Site and Out of Mind’.

There is another total change of pace in the Black Grape style funky Britpop wig out of ‘Harder all the Time’ and after the twisting ‘Open Your Mind’, the groove returns with a more 70’s vibe in ‘Get Your Feet On’.

The musical and emotional rollercoaster ends on the folk-meets-Springsteen-with-added-guitar ‘Spiritually Bankrupt’, a telling and intelligent commentary on life, beautifully told. A vital addition to the collection of not just fans of Jepson, but to anyone who loves passionate, supremely crafted music ‘Ignorance Is Bliss’ is just as remarkable now as when it was released a quarter of a century ago. *****

News: Albums of the Month (April 2020 – June 2020)

Katatonia - City Burials

KATATONIA City Burials Peaceville Records

…what we are dealing with here is a flawless piece of work  one that both critics and fans of the band will refer to as a classic in years to come. Brilliant  just brilliant!

***** (Ioannis (John) Stefanis)

Myrath - Live In Carthage

MYRATH  Live In Carthage earMusic

For me, this live set is the perfect introduction to Myrath and I can recommend it to both current fans and those looking for a different rock slant in equal measure. It sounds to me as though the Carthaginians were more than happy to welcome the onslaught on this occasion and thankfully this album is part of the city’s history with a joyous ending.

**** (Dave Wilson)

LETTUCE - Resonate

LETTUCE  Resonate Round Hill Records

This is one of those albums that if you heard it playing in the background in some smart cafe or shop (perhaps as lockdown eases?) you would be holding up your phone with “Shazam” loaded. Eminently danceable.  Unquestionably, superb.

***** (David Randall)

HOUSE OF LORDS – New World, New Eyes

HOUSE OF LORDS New World, New Eyes Frontiers Records

…muscled up melodic hard rock, with the “best before 1989” labels removed.

**** (Brian McGowan)

Ronan Furlong - Minerva's Meddling

RONAN FURLONG  Minerva’s Meddling Thoroughbred Music

He consistently aims to match his musical feel with related thematic content in an esoteric mix that makes ‘Minerva’s Meddling’ worthy of your attention.

**** (Pete Feenstra)

BAD TOUCH- Kiss the Sky

BAD TOUCH Kiss The Sky Marshall Records

They sum up how, through adding superior production and a more rounded sound to their already established strengths, Bad Touch have created easily their best work to date which could act as a springboard for them to step up into the big league.

Single reviews: LIONHEART, UDO

LIONHEART - Thine Is The Kingdom

LIONHEART Thine Is The Kingdom Metalville Records

A reformed Lionheart (after 30 years) recorded and released a rather fine album of American influenced Melodic Rock in 2017, “Second Nature”, reviewed here.

They weren’t all original band members, but old hands, Dennis Stratton, Steve Mann and Rocky Newton provided a stable core to which they added Clive Edwards (drums) and Lee Small, a prodigious talent who’d already added his powerful, sometimes sultry vocals to recent albums by Shy and Phenomena.

This track, ‘Thine Is The Kingdom’ is a trailer for the band’s new new album, “The Reality Of Miracles”, due out 31 July.

For anyone who thinks that the Melodic Rock resurgence has passed, this track is a wake up call. From its polished, surging intro to its locked down tight, harmony chorus, it nods its head vigorously toward the traditional compositional approach taken by the best melodic rock songwriters. The atmospheric touches provided by Mann’s subtle AOR keyboard textures, and the song’s sturdy melody carry a sense of subdued drama, climaxing in a glorious chorus that packs a considerable punch.

A suitably tempting trailer.

U.D.O. AND DAS MUSSIKORPS DER BUNDESWEHR - Neon Diamond

U.D.O. AND DAS MUSSIKORPS DER BUNDESWEHR (The Concertband of The German Armed Forces) Neon Diamond AFM Records

Another teaser track from AFM Records, taken from the forthcoming “We Are One” album, due out mid July. It’s an unusual departure for Udo (Accept) Dirkschneider – a “none-more-metal” singer collaborating with a concert band. But it works, most of the time.

UDO’s ex-band mates, Peter Baltes and Stefan Kauffmann wrote the material in collaboration with the German Armed Forces Band. So we know the strength of the pedigree, but the key to the album – given all the moving parts – is in the arrangements.

At its roots, this single, ‘Neon Diamond’ is unreconstructed pop metal, but it tends to over elaboration, meaning it works best when they keep it simple. Udo duets with golden voiced studio pro, Manuela Markewitz. At first, listening to the verse and bridge, Udo’s earnest, unmodulated vocals don’t seem to mesh well with Markewitz’s earthy passion. Then they hit the chorus, and it soars, with voices, and 60 piece band and orchestra reaching escape velocity in a micro second.

It’s a very commercial sound with a great hook, and that’s no doubt why it was released just weeks before the album hit the streets, or indeed, den strassen. Try it

Album review: MAGNUS KARLSSON’S FREE FALL – We Are The Night

MAGNUS KARLSSON'S FREEFALL - We Are The Night

Frontiers [Release date 12.06.20]

Album number three from the Free Fall project fronted by Primal Fear guitarist Magnus Karlsson, who has been busy of late having had a hand in the recent Allen/Olzen album also released by Frontiers.

Karlsson handles the instruments and songwriting side of the album, bar the drums which were played by Anders Köllerfors. There are numerous guests stepping up the mic stand, with highlights being former Black Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin on ‘Temples And Towers’ (a distinct Dio-era Rainbow feel on the guitar intro and song’s sound overall) and ‘Far From Over’.

‘Queen Of Fire’ allows Battle Beast’s Noora Louhimo to show what a powerful singer she is. A nicely executed piece of power metal, full of pomp and splendour.

It can get a bit metal by numbers as ‘Under The Black Star’ proves, which features Dino Jelusick. He has a much better song to sing in ‘Hold Your Fire’, a fine piece of melodic metal.

Being a guitarist he is allowed one instrumental wig out surely? He does that on ‘On My Way Back To Earth’, a rewarding mix of lead guitar, acoustic guitar and a layering of keys.

There is nothing that hasn’t been done before on this latest Free Fall album and it stands up well to the previous two albums. Fans of this project will love this latest installment. ***1/2

EP review: MOONLIGHT DESIRES – At The Movies

MOONLIGHT DESIRES - At The Movies

Infamous Butcher Records [Release date 17.07.20]

Moonlight Desires are a covers band hailing from Canada and their 2017 release, ‘Just The Hits 1981-85′ was good fun. This time they are still on a covers theme, going back to the 1980′s again giving four movie songs the Moonlight Desire once over.

Moonlight Desires are built around the brothers Trevor and Jay Ziebarth, who utilise a variety of musicians for both studio and live versions of the band.

‘Glory Of Love’ (originally by former Chicago singer Peter Cetera) sounds pretty similar to the original, with the guitars replacing the keys. However, ‘Hungry Eyes’, a hit for Eric Carmen first time around, has an almost frantic metal fade out. Sounds like it shouldn’t work but it does.

‘The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough’ is okay, to be fair the original by Cyndi Lauper was no great shakes either. The EP’s final song is a rollicking verison of the Simple Minds classic ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’. Plenty of guitar and an excellent cover version.

Just the tonic we need in these times, putting a little smile on your face and plenty of riffs for your bucks. ***1/2

Single reviews: LA GUNS, GILBY CLARKE, PSSR, PHIL X

Golden Robot Records

The LA Guns, PhilX & The Drills, Gilby Clarke and PSSR, all enduring talents who started life in the glow of Eighties’ Hair Metal, are all releasing albums soon on the fast growing Golden Robot Records.

The label is releasing teaser singles every so often, like a trail of crumbs through the lockdown jungle, leading us eventually to the big prize.

L.A. GUNS

We reviewed the LA Guns first single ‘Crawl’ last month.

Next up from the band is ‘Well Oiled Machine’, and yes, there’s photo of a Harley on the cover, but it’s not Biker Rock. At least, not as we know it.

It’s a pounding, piston pumping rock song, and it comes at you fast, before neatly changing gears down into a cool, relatively laid back chorus, with a gorgeously descending melodic hook, beautiful and sinister at one and the same time.

Lyrically, they’ve traded the latent misogyny of the genre’s sexist past for parody and pop metal, “I love my baby, she’s a well oiled machine. She takes me places I’ve never seen”.

Kudos for singing that line with a straight face, guys.

(See “The making of ‘Crawl’)

GILBY CLARKE

Gilby Clarke’s music is always hard to pin down. The music press likes pigeonholes so they usually accuse him of being unoriginal, and of his output being generic.

And yet his bluesy, rootsy albums of the past have proved to be very popular. For his fans, listening to his records was the definition of personal experience.

On the early evidence, he’s sounds like he’s stretched himself a good bit further than usual, challenging the accepted norms. As ‘Gospel Truth’ unfolds, we hear him squeeze out a stream of consciousness narrative, accompanied only by blasts of brass and a throbbing bass rhythm. In doing so he creates a fascinating – and clearly audible – slab of thinking man’s rock’n'roll, encouraging us to question who makes the laws and why. It’s thought provoking rather than ground breaking, but all the better for not being preachy.

PSSR

The little known PSSR comprises Lee Jakobson on vocals and guitar, Frank (Guns’n'Roses) Ferrer, on drums, and Rob Bailey on guitar. Richard (G’n'R) Fortus guests on lead guitar.

‘Busted’ is the 2nd single trailing the upcoming album, and it’s a raucous, ragged edged New York thing, full of jump cut chords and clattering rhythms. Jakobson wraps his grubby, high pitched vocals around the band’s straggly guitar shapes, sounding for all the world like they’re on stage in some dingy club, just waiting for night to fall.

(‘Busted’ video)

Theofilis Xenidis – Phil X to you and me, has been everywhere, man. From Canada’s Triumph in 1992, and their “Edge Of Excess” album to Bon Jovi, with whom he’s spent the last nine years, playing and recording.

His side band, Phil X And The Drills’ new album “Stupid Good Lookings, Vol 2” will be released later this year. Meantime, this single, ‘Right On The Money’, was made with direct fan involvement. It’s a solid, meat and 2 veg rock song, with a catchy Green Day/Weezer pop vibe. See the video on You Tube, and judge for yourself.

Album review: LONELY ROBOT – Feelings Are Good

LONELY ROBOT - Feelings Are Good

Inside Out [Release date 17.07.20]

In true Douglas Adams fashion Lonely Robot are back with their fourth album in a trilogy. Actually the first three albums were part of the space trilogy, whereas ‘Feelings Are Good’ as John Mitchell explains “is a bit of a departure from the first three Lonely Robot albums or ‘The Astronaut Trilogy’ as it has now lovingly become known…I wanted to explore more personal themes and the songs are very much about individual experiences and narratives that I believe had been the cornerstones, good and bad, to my life. The long tall and short of it is that we’re back on planet Earth, and I have a personal lyrical axe to grind!”

All the instruments and effects are handled by John Mitchell, with Craig Blundell on drums.

The title track opens the album, the computerised vocals leading nicely into ‘Into The Lo-Fi’, a proper belter of a tune. From the keys through to the drums, this is all that is good and great about the music of Lonely Robot.

‘Spiders’ is suitably horrific in the lyrics (in a good way!), a heavy melody and chorus that will stick in your head after just one play. No real surprise then that this song has been chosen as lead song from the album.

‘Crystalline’ is one of those heart felt, yet at the same time heart-breaking, songs John Mitchell does so well. The keys, strings and melody are simply stunning. There is also an orchestral version of this song on the album, which adds a little more pomp to the proceedings.

There is a hint of EDM (electronic dance music – I had to search it up) on ‘Keeping People As Pets’, with its keys and hypnotic beat. Again the music reveals more upon each listen. There is plenty going on in the album and chances are you will hear a new bit on each subsequent listen.

Closing the album is the simply beautiful ‘Grief Is The Price Of Love’. A song that mixes love and loss with equal measure, what a truly magnificently moving one minute twenty six seconds of music.

Mention to the two orchestral versions that are an added bonus. ‘The Silent Life’ has a quieter refrain where the strings build slowly and add greatly to the gentle vocal. ‘Crystalline’, as previously mentioned, has a little more pomp and grandiose cinematic feel.

A personal album from the artist in many aspects, however one that resonates with us all in some way. Albums like this come along all too rarely, being on the one hand a melodic delight and also one that has deeper, longer lasting impacts from its lyrical side. An album of the year. ****1/2

Album review: VIOLENT SOHO – Everything is A-OK

Violent Soho - Everything is A-OK

I Oh You Records [Release date: 03.04.20]

Accomplished indie/alt rock from Brisbane. I assume the title is not meant to be ironic. The album surfaced in the Spring and the recording/packaging would have been created long before the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, it’s hard not to smile wryly at the ‘Everything is A-OK’ title which offers the same level of comfort and resonance now as it did in April.

It is the 5th offering from the band who flirted with wider recognition with a big record deal back in 2010 and still carry serious influence back home. This album hit top spot in the Australian charts.

There’s plenty to like across a 34-minute collection that sits somewhere between a less-angsty Smashing Pumpkins and a mellower Blink-182. ‘Sleep Year’ is a great way to kick off the album, balancing melody with harder, wiry edges. Blustery, riff-packed tracks like ‘Pick It Up Again‘, ‘Easy’ and ‘Pity Jar’ see the four-piece bouncing off each other with energy to create punchy distractions. ‘Lying On the Floor’ peps up like Nirvana’s ‘…Teen Spirit’ for a brief moment and is shot through with 90’s grunge.

Elsewhere, ‘Slow Down Sonic’ is a calm, chilled offering and tracks like ‘A-OK’  introduce fragility and vulnerability both in musical tone and lyrical subjects. Frontman Luke Boerdam gives the vocals a nasal, sardonic twist throughout. You can almost see his curled lip as he channels Billy Corgan.

‘Vacation Forever’ is possibly the most complete track on view, grandstanding a great vocal with punchy guitar lines interspersed with mellower passages. The band seem pretty sharp and tight to me. Alongside Boerdam on vocals and rhythm guitar, the band comprises James Tidswell’s sharp lead guitar lines, and the thumping rhythm unit of drummer Michael Richards and bassman Luke Henery.

Good stuff, if a little derivative. ***½

Rising Stars: BLIND CHANNEL

Niko Moilanen from Blind Channel answered our questions about playing at Wacken, the music scene in Finland and more…

WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Our music is influenced by bands like I Prevail, Bring Me The Horizon, older Linkin Park & Modern Hiphop & Trap sounds

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WIN THE WACKEN METAL BATTLE AND PLAY IN FRONT OF A HUGE CROWD AT WACKEN?
It was our first show abroad, our trial by fire. It’s been almost 6 years. Time flies, it was incredible and fun. We were teenagers back then and had the best times of our lives!

YOU ARE ENTER SHIKARI FANS, WHAT WAS IT LIKE SUPPORTING THEM?
One of the biggest dream-come-trues. It was our first year as a band so it felt like something really huge was happening when we got to support Enter Shikari and meet them in person.

THE MUSIC SCENE IN FINLAND IS THRIVING, HOW DOES THIS HELP AN UP & COMING BAND?
For a metal/rock band Finland is a very good place to start a career. There are many band competitions and events all around Finland – so basically there’s a lot of opportunities to make it happen as a musician. Nowadays it’s getting harder and harder to break through as a band, and we’re thankful that we’ve got this far. Still, we have a long way ahead of us.

WHAT IS YOUR LIVE SHOW LIKE AND WHEN CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE YOU IN THE UK?
We play as 5 – piece band. Our show is a mixture of extreme energy, pure passion & Violent Pop  mayhem. Playing live has always been our strength. Our last time in the UK was in December 2018 and we want to come back ASAP!

DO YOU HAVE A NEW ALBUM IN THE WORKS?
We just released our 3rd album ‘Violent Pop’ so not very soon but maybe in 2 years yes! We’re also writing songs all the time, and the new songs will be the best you’ve ever heard from us.

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANY DELAYS IN RECORDING DUE TO COVID-19?
Covid19 hasn’t affected the recordings but we had to cancel all of our shows because of that… Despite the pandemic we have figured out ways to keep working for our future every day. Some of us were in quarantine together so we had nothing else to do except music.

SOME OF US HERE IN THE UK ARE STILL ON LOCKDOWN – CAN YOU RECOMMEND SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS TO LISTEN TO AND/OR BOOKS TO READ?
We recommend you all to watch movies like Fight Club, Marvel Movies and listen to your fave bands a lot. Or watch War of The Worlds or the film 2012, things could be worse. And of course, we recommend you listen to our new album Violent Pop. After this pandemic we recommend you to go out and enjoy your fave bands live shows.

ANY MESSAGE FOR YOUR FANS?
We love you a lot. The passion is real. The love is real. Thank you for being with us!

They release a new single ‘Gun’ on 3July via the Ranka Kustannus label. The single is taken from their 3rd album ‘Violent Pop’ and has been produced by Jonas Olsson.

Album review: KANSAS – The Absence of Presence

KANSAS- The Absence of Presence

Inside Out Records [Release Date 17.07.20]

Kansas are an object lesson in regeneration and renewal for veteran bands. Having been around since 1974, many feared for their future when lead singer Steve Walsh retired in 2014, but continuing with a new singer in Ronnie Platt, 2016’s The Prelude Implicit was warmly received and still had a trademark Kansas sound.

However this follow up makes an altogether  bolder statement. Especially in the first half of the album it is a reminder that over their first few albums, Kansas were one of the leading bands carving out a distinctively American take on the UK-dominated world of progressive rock, before gradually honing a more AOR-friendly sound.

While two original members remain in drummer Phil Ehart and guitarist Richard Williams, they have nevertheless been revitalised by two younger musicians who are the main writers and whose appreciation of the signature Kansas sound shines through: guitarist Zak Rizvi who came onboard for the last album, and new keyboard player Tom Brislin.

The ambitious title track seems to break the rulebook for a traditional album opener- it weighs in at nearly eight and a half minutes, starting with over a minute of trademark violin and keyboard passages before the vocals kick in. It is sedate in pace and the vocals have a dreamy ethereality until a mid-song leads into an instrumental jam between organ and guitar, accompanied by a switching changing of time signatures.

‘Throwing Mountains’ is built on a bigger, tougher riff of the type generally absent from the previous album and is another multi faceted epic with vocal harmonies and great instrumental interplay, particularly as the song works to a clever climax particularly well. My only gripe would be that the chorus lacks a strong hook.

‘Jets Overhead’  has more lively interplay but after the instrumental ‘Propulsion 1’ the focus shifts to some shorter songs with the piano-led ballad ‘Memories Down The Line’ having echoes of ‘Dust In The Wind’, notably in David Ragsdale’s violin solo.

Though more exemplary musicianship in ‘Circus Of Illusion’ is slightly let down by a weak chorus hook, ‘Animals On The Roof’ has more accessible melodies, combined by a duel between prominent violin and some very Keith Emerson-like organ work.

Ronnie Platt is far from a Steve Walsh clone, but his crystal clear, pleasant voice fits in with the sound perfectly. He particularly shines on  ‘Never’, a beautifully laid back tune where the progressive tendencies are reined in while an old Kansas tradition of multiple singers is continued as Tom makes his vocal debut on the choppy rhythms of album closer ‘Song The River Sang’, spoiled only by a peculiar, directionless outro.

Not everything comes off, and some of the chorus melodies could be stronger, but all in all this is a bold and remarkably fresh statement of intent from a band refusing to coast on their laurels.   **** 1/4

Album review: PAUL KANTNER, GRACE SLICK & DAVID FREIBERG – Baron Von Tollboth And The Chrome Nun

PAUL KANTNER, GRACE SLICK & DAVID FREIBERG - Baron Von Tollboth And The Chrome Nun

Esoteric [Release date: 27.3.20]

By the early ’70s, a plethora of side projects accompanied the gentle coming-to-earth of Jefferson Airplane. A banner for socially-conscious psych-spiked folk rock, the San Franciscan ensemble was unassembling, its members distracted, often by themselves, and moved to create anew.

For co-founder and guitarist Paul Kantner and the band’s vocalist Grace Slick this motivation had kicked the decade off with showcases for their own compositions taped at the city’s Wally Heider Studios to a template of free-form rock part-extemporised by heavy guests who seemingly drifted into the sessions via an open-door policy.

Notwithstanding the participation of Quicksilver Messenger Service guitarist/keyboardist David Freiberg, session guesting from nigh on twenty local scene ‘free-spirits’ including the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, David Crosby (his nicknames for Kanter and Slick give us the title) and fellow Airplane crew, 1973′s ‘Baron von Tollboth And The Chrome Nun’ exemplifies how while this context could fairly suggest it being invested with structural raggedness, the outcome is the opposite.

Hallmarked by a disciplined and rigid integrity that harnesses the raging talent of the twenty and drives forward a production of complexity and density, this is as much a testament to the high standards of its studio engineers as to its writers and performers.

The roaring jam of opener ‘Ballad Of The Chrome Nun’ fast gives way to some of their most memorable songs: ‘Fat’ sets in motion via ‘Flowers In The Night’, ‘Your Mind Has Left Your Body’, ‘Harp Tree Lament’ and closer ‘Sketches Of China’ a journey into the setting sun of Californian counter-culture, long, hot days of laying down ideas now tipping into starlit nights, distracted by great grass, ideals blurring around the edges.

This edition has been re-mastered and restores the original album artwork in a digipack with new notes; while there is no bonus recorded material, there really is no need.  ****

CHESTER KAMEN AND THE LOVES – Americanized

CHESTER KAMEN & THE LOVES - Americanized

Stoney Records [Release date 03.07.20]

In another era Chester Kamen and the Loves might have shifted a ton of copies. They somehow evoke the days of New Wave/Punk, coming across like early Talking Heads, like the Buzzcocks, Eddie and the Hot Rods, or even if you can imagine the Stranglers without a keyboard player, or the Blockheads.

They don’t have the drive of a Green Day, but they bring all the ingredients to the party. They play with energy, catchy tunes, snappy lyrics – you know the type.

Kamen also brings a top drawer pedigree through years of playing with Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, Paul McCartney and Madonna to name a few.

The band format is a straightforward two guitars, vocals, bass and drums. Drummer Steve Monti has his own pedigree with Gary Numan, Jesus and Mary Chain and Wilko Johnson among others. Michael Cahill is on lead vocals (a la Ian Dury/Mark Knopfler) and guitars with Sam Harley on bass.

“Americanized” is their fifth album. See what they did with the title? They put a “z” in to hmm er “Americanise” it !

“King of What Remains” gets the album off to a strong start – then comes the title track and single, which really does the trick. “I thought we were only getting high, but we were getting Americanized”. This one grows with every play. Happily rhyming “4th of July” with “Pie in the Sky”.

“Almost Done” brings a slightly slower groove which takes off half way through and is a good one with some shades of Pink Floyd hidden in the chord sequences and vocal delivery.

The band see this album as reflecting the “changing world that we all live in” but I see it as evoking happy echoes from a bunch of musical influences.

If you’re looking for a piece of lockdown cheer you could do worse than give this a spin (in old speak). ****

Feature: Call Collect – An introduction to STEVE HACKETT

Alan Jones and David Randall chart the rise and revival of progmeister par excellence, Steve Hackett

STEVE HACKETT - Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, 11 November 2019

When we reviewed the Steve Hackett gig in October 2013 following the release of the second Genesis Revisited album, Pete Whalley summed things up.  “It was, frankly, a breathtaking trip and one that will have made a certain generation of gentlemen very happy.

In doing so Steve Hackett has almost unwittingly become the key holder of Pandora’s Box.  And the pressure for him to reveal its treasures on a regular basis is likely to be a weight he’s going to have to carry.  He appeared unperturbed at the prospect.  Magnificent.”

In truth the “Genesis Genie” was easing out of the bottle back in 1996 when Hackett released his first Genesis Revisited album.  He’d always put the occasional Genesis song or two in his setlist before that time, but his running order was mostly based on the latest, or previous, solo albums.

Steve Hackett on tour - 2009-2013

Hackett’s career renaissance coincided with a revival of a more general interest in prog, reflected especially in the creation of a dedicated magazine in early-2009 to sit alongside ‘Classic Rock’ and the more irregular ‘Blues’.  A year later he was inducted in the Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis although he was critical of the BBC documentary that followed claiming rightly that it ignored his solo output and even in camera shot he appeared to be edged out.

Hackett’s rejuvenation has also coincided with the development of GRTR! especially the radio station and he has graciously given us several interviews which help place things in perspective.

Hackett has also successfully tapped in to social media during the past 10 years, he is accessible, and during Lockdown has been giving mini masterclasses on some some of his most popular material.  His autobiography – A Genesis In My Bed – is published in July 2020 whilst Alan Hewitt’s 2009 book still remains relevant for his back story.

Later Genesis with Phil Collins

Of course, as a musician in the millennium, Hackett had the benefit of a great solo back catalogue and a credibility of association with one of the early great prog bands who were – along with the likes of Jethro Tull and Monty Python – staples in sixth former chat in the early 1970s.

Steve found it more difficult to get his material accepted in the band as time went on, and needed more control, although his big set-pieces – ‘Firth Of Fifth’ and  ‘Dancing With The Moonlit Knight’ – were particularly impressive.  Before he left Genesis – in 1977 -  he had already made his first solo album.

Steve Hackett’s time with Genesis is, rather like Peter Gabriel’s, looked back on as the ‘Golden Age’ by the band’s cognoscenti.

And rightly so, with albums such as Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Wind And Wuthering and A Trick Of The Tail, Hackett’s reputation as a virtuoso guitarist was universally acknowledged by both fans and peer-group musicians alike.

His superlative solo career began in 1975 whilst still a part of Genesis with the brilliant Voyage Of The Acolyte – a very Genesis-sounding album (no surprise) yet a powerful statement of intent and which included classics such as ‘Ace Of Wands’, ‘A Tower Struck Down’ and the imperious ‘Shadow Of The Hierophant’ – still an integral part of his live shows.

Subsequent to Hackett’s departure from Genesis in 1977 following much acrimony regarding his musical input, Steve made Genesis fans realise what they were going to be missing with a run of three outstanding solo releases.

STEVE HACKETT - Premonitions - The Charisma Recordings 1975-1983

The solo albums released between 1975-1983 were collected together in a box set (2015)

(My own favourite) 1978′s Please Don’t Touch, included gems such as ‘Narnia’, ‘Racing In A’, the brilliant ‘How Can I?’ (featuring the rich vocals of Richie Havens) and ‘Hoping Love Will Last’ (with stunning vocals by Randy Crawford).

Spectral Mornings from 1978 is generally accepted as the finest of Steve’s early albums, with tracks such as ‘Every Day’, ‘Tigermoth’, the classic title track and the fabulous ‘Clocks – The Angel Of Mons’ – another current live staple.

Defector from 1980 proved to be a bit of a watershed as it preceded a run of albums that, while still enjoyable, marked a shift away from progressive rock into a more commercial sphere. It still had some great tracks though – ‘Jacuzzi’, the heavy as f*ck ‘Slogans’, the chiming ‘The Toast’ and the sprawling epic ‘The Steppes’.

The years between 1981 and 1984 saw a slew of releases  - Cured, Highly Strung, Bay Of Kings and Till We Have Faces. All had their moments but they indicated a rather hesitant standard of songwriting – somewhat at odds with the first four. Bay Of Kings comprised classical compositions and was technically superb, but hard going at times. Of this group Highly Strung is the best.

A four year hiatus was broken in 1988 with another classical album Momentum (one of J. Corbyn’s favourites) which, in turn, led to another fallow period.

This was ended spectacularly in 1993 with the exceptional Guitar Noir one of Hackett’s finest albums and, at last, a return to doing what he does best. ‘Sierra Quemada’, ‘Dark As The Grave’ and the dark classic ‘Vampyre With A Healthy Appetite’ appear here.

Following the trend, Steve dipped his toe into the blues revival of the early ’90s with Blues With A Feeling – an indication, if any were needed, that the best players can turn their hand to anything.

The first of the Genesis Revisited albums in 1996 predicated a phalanx of live Genesis material that Hackett toured and released in the 2010′s as self-appointed ‘Keeper Of The Flame’.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1997 was another classical effort, but this was followed by a run of classic Hackett albums Darktown, To Watch The Storms, Wild Orchids, the legally fraught Out Of The Tunnel’s Mouth and Beyond The Shrouded Horizon were released between 1999 and 2011 – all are well worthy of anyone’s time.

The three studio albums from the late 2010′s Wolflight, The Night Siren and At The Edge Of Light saw Hackett’s songwriting and playing move up a couple of notches, I suspect as a consequence of touring the Genesis Revisited shows. All three albums are exceptional (check out the reviews in the GRTR! album reviews section.)

Mention must be made of the Genesis Revisited live albums – there’s at least four of them and they are all just superb – the sound quality is beyond belief, the band are fantastic and Hackett’s playing is just from another planet. I saw two of them and still smile about them now.

If Steve Hackett had stayed with Genesis he would have played on albums like Invisible Touch, Abacab and We Can’t Dance and just picked up his cheques.

We should all be grateful he set his sights much higher …

Steve Hackett in 2019

Along with Hackett’s musical development, and chiming with early millennium prog zeitgeist, he had extricated himself from a difficult personal relationship with both his long-standing partner and his manager who had steered the artist through the Camino-era of releases.  He remarried in 2011 and his happier relationship with Jo Lehmann has also paralleled his more recent renaissance.  The two share an interest in travelling and alternative societies and also collaborate on lyrics.

Freed of the personal and business shackles, there followed a more focused series of albums that continues to this day.  Those who have followed his solo career since the mid-1970s may begrudge that – in terms of live performance – his solo output is now largely overshadowed by the bombast of earlier Genesis.

Reviewing his gig in October 2015 we noted “As my GRTR! colleague Pete Whalley previously commented, the Genesis genie is well and truly out of the bottle.  The music is so well executed, and so well received, Steve will struggle to contain it or let it resume a less overt position in the proceedings in the future”.

Understandably the guitarist has guested on many other, often prog-related, albums including Hungarian jazz rock band Djabe but for a time in the 1980s he was a member of the melodic rock band GTR with Steve Howe.

As a guitarist, he was highly influential for his pioneering of tapping and sweeping techniques.  A great all-rounder, and genuinely nice guy to boot, Steve Hackett fully deserves his more recently acquired adulation.

Album review: BLUE OYSTER CULT – Iheart Radio Theater NYC 2012

BLUE OYSTER CULT – Iheart Radio Theater NYC 2012

Frontiers [Release date 08.05.20]

An invited audience of 200 lucky fans saw Blue Oyster Cult live on stage at the IHeart Radio Theater in New York in 2012. The event noisily celebrated the band’s 40th year together, expertly recorded by multiple video cameras and state of the art audio, now released by Frontiers Records in a combined CD and DVD package.

Blue Oyster Cult’s Wagnerian Heavy Metal transfers well to the live music environment. Their fans don’t expect animated stagecraft, just a bunch of their favourite songs let loose.

The driving, relentless energy of ‘The Golden Age..’, launched by muscled up harmonies; ‘Burnin’ For You’s commercial nous and ‘Shooting Shark’s tragic/beautiful chorus open the set, following ‘RU Ready To Rock’s introductory imperative.

The perfect start. Even this iteration of the band…Bloom, Roesser, Richie Castellano (keyboards), Jules Radino (drums) and the inimitable Kasim Sulton (bass)… has spent years on the road together, progressively tuning and tightening its sound into a weapon of mass live enjoyment.

Roeser and Bloom never look totally comfortable with the obvious audience adulation, (though they’re happy to tease them on ‘City In Flames…’), leaving most of the rock’n'roll moves to Castellano and Sulton, but are clearly at home pumping out their best known material, which just never seems to age.

A roaring, high tension ‘Godzilla’ and the understated majesty of ‘…The Reaper’ light up the second half, seeping into your consciousness, effectively closing the set, and doing it in grand style.

The recording has all the clarity and heft you would expect from ambitious production values, and the DVD comes with a band interview, effectively a bonus track not available on the CD.

Of course it’s only one in a long line of the label’s reissues from the Blue Oyster Cult BOC back catalogue, and more to come…

Album review: EBBA BERGKVIST & THE FLAT TIRE BAND – Spilt Milk

EBBA BERGKVIST & THE FLAT TIRE BAND - Spilt Milk

[Release date 29.05.20]

The debut album from Ebba Bergkvist & The Flat Tire Band – a Stockholm based, blues rock band featuring  Ebba Bergkvist (vocals, guitar), Adam Randolph (drums), Erik Edgren (guitar)and Björn Korning (bass) – offers a bewildering smogasboard of styles.

But the pleasantly unpolished, self-produced affair is sonically quite a breath of fresh air.  Yes, the self-production may not be de-rigueur, but in these auto tuning days it adds a refreshing rawness to the retro fuelled 13 track set.

Firmly rooted in the past, the band’s influences are diverse, veering wildly in direction from the late 60s rock of ‘Cabin Fever’ and ‘Princess In The Tower’ (a Scandi reponse to Greta Van Fleet, or the punky half sibling of Blues Pills?) and the Peter Green style ‘Dorothea’, through  70s glam/punk/new wave (‘Nightcap’) and funk stomp (‘Flat Tire’), all the way to the charming acoustic ditty ‘I Guess We Can Always Get What We Want’ (reminiscent of the all too short lived fellow countrymen Oh Laura featuring Frida Öhrn).

And if that wasn’t diverse enough, there’s the sax imbued late night Norah Jones styled ‘I’ve Got Nothing’, 50s swing (‘Hard Times’), and even a ‘old time’ crooner (‘Last Dance’) adding yet more disorienting dimensions to this strange brew of curved balls.

As a result, Spilt Milk may be simply too diverse for many, but it does demonstrate the band’s willingness to tackle a wide variety of styles.  They’re going to have to narrow it down, at least some, to find wider appeal, but the unfettered, and emotive playing, and Bergkvist’s excellent vocals vocals make the album an impressive calling card.  ***1/2

Album review: THUNDERMOTHER – Heat Wave

THUNDERMOTHER - Heat Wave

AFM Records [Release date 31.07.20]

Heat Wave – Thundermother’s fourth album – finds the no frills, all-female, Swedish, rock ‘n’ raunchers still in line-up transition.

With all bar founder member/guitarist/songwriter Filippa Nässil quitting the band after touring their 2015 sophomore release Road Fever, Nässil did a quite remarkable job of seamlessly re-booting the band with their 2018 self-titled album.  And as we commented in the review of that album Guernica Mancini (vocals), in particular, is a real ‘find’.

Heat Wave sees the introduction of a new bass player – Majsan Lindberg, and for the first time, all band members, including drummer Emlee Johansson, contribute to the song writing.

Produced by Danish hard rocker Soren Andersen, who’s worked with the likes of Glenn Hughes, Dave Mustaine, and Tommy Aldridge, at his Copenhagen Medley recording studio, Heat Wave picks up where Thundermother left off, with another 13 tracks of no nonsense, high voltage rock ‘n’ roll.

The set kicks out the jams with the AC/DC imbued ‘Loud And Alive’ – a sure fire crowd pleaser, ‘Dog From Hell’ adds a little Def Leppard/Joan Jett swagger, while ‘Back In ’76′ marries the spirit of Jett’s take on ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’ with a faint whiff of Bolan’s ‘Children of The Revolution’ riff.

‘Into The Mud’ melds the urgency of AC/DC and Motörhead, the title tracks borrows unashamedly from the former, and ‘Driving In Style’ the latter.  It’s all huge, tongue in cheek, fun.

Like on the band’s last album the shadow of AC/DC looms large throughout, although the solitary ballad, ‘Sleep’ which strays into P!nk! territory, and the bluesy funk of ‘Purple Sky’, both hint at a broader potential.

Yes, it’s formulaic and well ‘choreographed’, but Thundermother’s brand of brash, anthemic, fist pumping, rock ‘n’ roll isn’t supposed to be taken too seriously.  It’s about letting your hair down (at least by those of us who have any remaining).   And, Coronavirus permitting, the band will tour the album through Germany and Europe in autumn.  Ballsy.  ***1/2

Album review: LARKIN POE – Self Made Man

LARKIN POE - Self Made Man

Tricki-Woo Records [Release date 12.06.20]

Atlanta-bred, Nashville-based multi-instrumentalist Lovell sisters Rebecca and Megan have never been less than prolific, passing through folk, and then pop before alighting on the pop meets American South roots based format they debuted on Peach (2017).

It instantly found them wider a wider appeal, and the follow up, Venom & Faith (2018), written and delivered to the same template, saw them nominated, but narrowly miss out on, a Grammy for best contemporary blues album.

While it’s claimed that Self Made Man – like its predecessor, self-produced with “our good buddy and engineer” Roger Alan Nichols at his Nashville studio, Bell Tone Recording – sees the pair ‘pushing their music and message towards hitherto unexplored terrain’, to my ears it’s very much Venon & Faith, Part II.

Which is a bit of a disappointment.  Yes, there’s an argument for ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, but while Venom & Faith took the blueprint of Peach to the next level, Self Made Man doesn’t bring anything new the party, other than an overburdening  White Stripes overbearing  effects density to the vocals and guitar work that permeates the record like an unwelcome shroud of smog.

And while all the underlying hallmarks that made Venom & Faith’s radio friendly heritage rooted pop so fresh are still there, the song writing – which this time around includes just the one cover – Blind Willie Johnson’s haunting ‘God Moves On The Water’ – just isn’t is as strong, sounding arguably like an album of Venon & Faith ‘outtakes’.

It all adds up to Self Made Man sounding frustratingly one dimensional.  I likened Venom & Faith to a freight train comin’ down the line.  With Self Made Man, Larkin Poe seem to have engaged reverse gear.  ***

Album review: MAGENTA – Masters Of Illusion

MAGENTA - Masters Of Illusion

Tigermoth [Release date 10.07.20]

It seems a while since Magenta’s last studio release – We Are Legend (2017), and much as I enjoyed it, I have to confess it isn’t an album I’ve felt overly inclined to revisit at regular intervals since.  But if I’m honest, there’s not too many albums I have felt that way about in recent years.

In hindsight it sort of feels like ‘another’ Magenta album, and if I was in the mood for a bit of Christina, Rob and Chris, I’d probably be reaching for a ‘classic’ like Seven, or Home. Which is interesting because after making what he considered a ‘contemporary prog’ album, Rob Reed  too was anxious to get back to the original Magenta template  – ‘lots of Moog and guitar solos, 12 string guitar, Mellotrons and bass pedals, but always with melodies. The song is always king!’  I’d have to agree.

So Masters Of Illusion – a 60-minute album consisting of six songs, including the 17 minute title track, finds Magenta turning back the years with a set based on the private lives of six actors who featured in the classic Hammer and Universal horror films of the 1950s and 1960s.

The album opener ‘Bela’ charts the rise and fall of the Hollywood ‘Dracula’ superstar of the 1930s Bela Legosi, ‘A Gift From God’ – Christopher Lee’s lifetime longing for fame as an opera singer, ‘Reach For The Moon’ – Lon Chaney Jnr’s inability to escape the shadow of his father, ‘Snow’ – Ingrid Pitt’s harrowing holocaust childhood, ‘The Rose’ – Peter Cushing’s philandering but utter devastation at the loss of his wife, and the epic title track which unpicks Vincent Price’s prickly relationship with director Michael Reeves on the 1968 set of Witchfinder General.

With just that notion you can begin to see a conceptual theme emerging that dates back to Seven’s seven deadly sins (2004), running through the untimely demise of rock’s infamous The Twenty Seven Club (2013).

And aside from the playful Kate Bush style ‘Snow’ (the band did an unforgettable ‘Hounds Of Love’ final encore at Peter Gabriela’s Real World Studios when I saw them there 10 years ago, but which sadly didn’t make the subsequent live album), all the material here would sit very comfortably in the Seven/Home (2004/2006) era of the band’s back catalogue.  It’s a far less dense style of prog than on intervening outings, and there’s distinct Rice/Lloyd Webber/West End feel to proceedings.  And I mean that in a good way.

Messrs Reed, Booth and Fry are in sparkling form throughout, and for once I have nothing but praise for the ‘new’ rhythm section who I’ve criticised for a lack of subtlety in the past (let’s put it down to youthful exuberance).

There’s also a sprinkling of cameo performances – Peter Jones (Camel/Tiger Moth Tales) adds sax on ‘Reach For The Moon’ and ‘The Rose’.  Troy Donockley also plays Uilleean Pipes on the latter.  But in truth, neither’s contributions add a great deal to proceedings, being somewhat telegraphed vignettes of their own distinctive styles.  John Mitchell adds harmony vocals on ‘A Gift From God’, but unless you listen hard, you’ll miss them.

Naturally, Reed – as is his wont – doffs his cap to aspects of Mike Oldfield, Yes, early Genesis, and even Supertramp, but in wider terms there’s a real sense of melodic ‘flow’ to the set that’s often been missing on more recent outings.

Yes, Masters Of Illusion is Magenta/Reed doing what they/he does best.  It turns back the years without ever being ‘retro’ and I would suggest is comfortably the best Magenta album since Home.  Masters Of Illusion – The Musical, anyone?  *****
