Album review: THE GUESS WHO – Plein D’Amour

THE GUESS WHO - Plein D'Amour

Deko Entertainment [Release date 07.07.23]

The Guess Who’s 2018 album, ‘The Future IS What It Used to Be’, wasn’t bad at all, maybe a bit too AOR/melodic rock for diehard fans, possibly due to Styx’s Tommy Shaw having a large input into the songwriting. He doesn’t seem to appear at all on this album, which still has a strong melodic feel, with a few dips into 70s rock and prog sounds.

The band line-up has also had a couple of changes, with former Lou Gramm guitarist Michael Staertow and ex-Whitesnake bassist Michael Devin, joining the trio of vocalist Derek Sharp, keys/sax player Leonard Shaw and drummer (& sole original member) Garry Peterson.

‘The King’ was released as the first single/album taster and it is a fine bit of 70s pomp rock. Styx and Queen come to mind when listening to this, along with the much missed Jellyfish. In fact, if you didn’t know better you’d swear this was an unreleased Jellyfish song. Song of the album, along with the title track, by a country mile.

The psychedelic ‘Across The Line’ and the summery pop rock of ‘People Around Me’ are both strong tunes. ‘Headline’ mines the CSN vibe highlighting the vocal talents of the Guess Who. Like the two aforementioned songs, perfect for playing on a summer’s day.

The title track throws a lot into the musical pot, with a nice, big 70′s guitar sound, vocal harmonies and a touch of prog.

Despite containing eight songs, the album clocks in at just over thirty minutes but then better than having fillers or songs overstaying their welcome.

The Guess Who certainly deserve a fair listen as they are another classic band on a purple patch. An album that grows on you the more you play it and that’s always the sign of good music. ***1/2

Album review: GOV’T MULE – Peace…Like A River

GOV’T MULE - Peace...Like A River

Fantasy Records [Release date 16.06.23]

Formed in the mid 90s as an offshoot of the reformed Allman Brothers, and led by guitarist Warren Haynes, this is the Mule’s 13th studio album. The band have long had a reputation of injecting Southern Rock with additional blues and a jamming mentality. And on top of a number of official live albums, the band have recorded almost every live show and made them available for download.

Two years since the more raw and bluesy Heavy Load Blues, we get Peace …. Like A River.

Opener ‘Same As Ever Was’ injects soul and heavy country into the bluesy Southern Rock, and emotional acoustic segments nod to a Bruce Springsteen or Bryan Adams ballad. There is some solid organ work too. Then there’s ‘Shake Our Way Out’, a heavy groove and a lot of fuzz. A nice blues feel here, a nod to the likes of Hendrix and Cream. In fact it’s the piano tinkling that gives the Skynyrd edge, a large element of the sound is stripped down Southern with a bluesy power trio edge, and a meaty soul injection. And while many of the songs are in the 5 to 7 minute region, it’s easy to imagine a 15 minute live version.

Here, alongside guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes and long-time drummer Matt Abts are bassist Jorgen Carlsson and keyboard/guitarist Danny Louis.

‘Your Only Friend’ is a heartfelt slower number, the acoustic intro nodding to Freebird. And the additional strings adding an additional emotional layer, and the guitar solo is quite Gimour-esque. The solo and the strings take turns to sit over the gentle rhythm and nicely wondering bass line. Then there’s ‘Dreaming Out Loud’, additional brass and horns, female co-lead vocals, quite soulful. Update a 70s Blaxploitation soundtrack with some rock and you’re there.

‘Head Full Of Thunder’ really stuck out, wow what a fantastic grove, led by the guitar with a great bass line. ‘The River Only Flows One Way’ is more atmospheric, interesting off-beat.

Twelve wonderful tracks running to about 75 minutes, and a range of moods; for a Southern Rock offshoot it’s as experimental as it is stripped down and a wonderful listen, fluid, a good chunk of blues and heavy soul seamlessly flowing in and out. The band have come a long way since their rockier late 90s albums. Guests include ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons too.

And check out the Deluxe Edition with a bonus 5 track Sign Of The Times EP. This edition comes in a gatefold card sleeve, with the booklet unattached in the gatefold, so be careful it doesn’t drop out. These excellent extra tracks are well worth the money, and a further nod to the Allman Brothers, from which the band came. Fans will love this, and it’ll probably pick up some new fans along the way. Stick with this band and enjoy the journey. ****

Album review: BLACK SABBATH – Live Evil

WIN a copy of Live Evil!

BLACK SABBATH - Live Evil

BMG [Release date 02.06.23]

1982, and twelve years after their debut, the fathers of heavy metal finally released their first official live album. And what a cracker it is. And the reason for releasing it was allegedly threefold; a reaction to the 1980 unofficial live set Live At Last, the 1982 live release by  original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, consisting of Sabbath covers, and the signing of a new publishing deal which meant a fairer split of the songwriting royalties.

Since Ozzy’s departure at the end of the 70s, former Elf and Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio had come in and given the band a new life, a new energy, and the new line-up released two studio albums (Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules) to much acclaim, even in the face of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal as was back then. So maybe a live album was a natural step too.

The new line-up of vocalist Dio and drummer Vinnie Appice with founder members guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler (with guest pianist Geoff Nicholls) recorded this album over 3 nights on the Mob Rules tour, and a wonderful album too.

While the Ozzy-era tracks stay fairly true to form, Dio isn’t afraid to make them his own. And a couple of tracks, including a drum and guitar solo, are extended too. And there’s no quibble from me over the setlist either. A good mix and the band weren’t afraid to showcase the new material. Basically, an essential album for rock and metal fans. Wonderful.  Sadly this line-up disintegrated during the album’s production, but that’s another story.

Now on to this release.

The album has previously had single CD (edited), double CD and remastered reissues, and in line with the current ongoing BMG campaign, we get the Deluxe issue in a box with extras. But how deluxe is it?

Firstly, the package of the CD edition (there is an LP edition available, 4LPs in a box with program and book, quite extravagant), and first out is a replica tour poster, a replica tour programme, and a book.

And in the LP edition, the book and tour programme are 12” size, something meaty to get your hands on. And what’s lovely about this book is a substantial essay, you know, proper sleevenotes, with a few pictures.  It’s clearly much less press cuttings and rare overseas vinyl based. So read it as you listen and enjoy.

The CD package comes with two double CDs. Both come in gatefold card LP replica sleeves, and in both cases the card is a little more substantial than usual, and the CDs come out easily, for a change.

The first set, the remastered album, replicates the original sleeve, and compared to the last remaster, there is definitely an improvement. The music, it sounds excellent. But if that’s all you want, I’m not sure the difference warrants the price point.  Yes, it’s expensive, and for some reason the European release is 30% more expensive than the US edition on Rhino.

The second set in a similar package but different artwork, is the remix. Yes they’ve remixed the album, and this is superb. Some layers come put with significantly more clarity, especially the drums. You can actually make out the separate layers. The sound on vinyl is good, but does not come out as well as the CD.

The package is, without a doubt, deluxe, and the remastered version of the album is too. However, musical content, given the deluxe tag, and price, and that a large portion of the target audience will have the previous remaster, are you going to want more? Well, yes.

Rory Gallagher’s Irish Tour 74, UFO’s Strangers In The Night, Deep Purple’s Made In Japan and most recently Thin Lizzy’s Live And Dangerous are just some of the live albums recorded over several nights that have since been reissued as multi disc sets featuring the entire individual shows.

So that, here, for a live album of this standing, is a major and obvious missed opportunity. We’re not privy to what they had available to go back to, but even the most gold plated package (which this genuinely is) costs that much, one would feel rather short changed.

Gripes aside, it is a wonderful sounding and wonderfully packaged album that will be hard not to enjoy.

EP review: THE UGLY GUYS – Rolling In The Deep

THE UGLY KIDS - Rolling In The Deep

Conquest Music [Release date 09.06.23]

The Ugly Guys release this three track EP ahead of their album of cover versions, ‘Cover Your Tracks’, due out on August 25 on Conquest Music. Looking back to 2013 on this site this reviewer gave a lukewarm reception to their ‘Lost In The Badlands’, although since then my musical tastes have encompassed plenty of country and Americana music and become much more of a fan of these musical styles.

The Ugly Guys still features vocalist Paul Shuttleworth  and guitarist, vocalist, pedal steel guitar and dobro player Vic Collins, who together formed 1970s pub rockers the Kursaal Flyers. The band’s line-up is completed by Steve Oliver (Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Keyboards, Vocals), Bob Clouter (Drums) and Nevil Kiddier (Bass, Vocals).

Fair play to them for tackling Adele’s 2011 hit and the EP’s title. The Ugly Guys give it a real bit of country swing & twang and certainly better than the original version!

Gene Pitney’s hit ’24 Hours From Tulsa’ may lack the distinctive vocal style of the original, however, the pedal steel guitar of Vic Collins adds an extra bit of sparkle and magic.

‘Streets of Bakersfield’ is the more obvious cover choice for a country band, as it was a US number 1 for Dwight Yoakham & Buck Owens. The duelling lead vocals of Nevil Kiddier and Steve Oliver work well on this.

The Ugly Guys have musical talent in spades and they certainly seem to enjoy doing these covers. The album due in a couple of months time will be one to grab a listen to and until then, see if you can mimic a Gene Pitney vocal… ***1/2

Album review: DALLAHAN – Speak Of The Devil

DALLAHAN - Speak of the Devil

www.dallahanmusic.com [Release date 16.06.23]

Dallahan base their sound not only on Scotland and Ireland’s traditional music scene, but drawing on the music of the Balkans and North America. Dallahan consists of Jack Badcock on guitar and vocals, Ciaran Ryan on banjo, mandolin and fiddle, Andrew Waite on accordion and Benedict Morris on fiddle, who replaced original fiddle player Jani Lang.

Dallahan have toured extensively in Europe and North America, establishing themselves internationally at such prestigious musical events as Milwaukee Irish Fest, Celtic Connections, Tonder Festival and more.

On top of that they have earned three nominations for ‘Folk Band of The Year’ in 2016, 2019 and 2022 and enjoyed collaborations such as with Dougie MacLean, a commissioned composition and collaboration with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at a WWI commemorative concert and also a concert in Kathmandu with Nepal’s folk music exponents, Kutumba.

It is perhaps their worldwide travels that help them in their own unique sound, that has the traditional Celtic music appeal of say the instrumental ‘Beaton’s', coupled with a song like ‘The Picture On The Wall’, that owes more to North America folk music.

They work so well of each other as listening to the fiddle, accordion and banjo interplay, coupled with a steady guitar rhythm, on ‘Alma’s’ shows.

The lively instrumental ‘Durbar Square’ is a real treat, as is indeed ‘Rude Spanish Soil’, which is based on Laurie Lee’s book, ‘As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning’.

There is definitely something in the Scottish water as we have had so many great bands and albums of late, including Skerryvore, Gnoss and now this latest one from Dallahan. Enjoy this wonderfully entertaining album and if you get a chance, catch them at one this year’s summer folk festivals. ***1/2

Album review : FALSE MEMORIES – Hybrid Ego System

Frontiers [Release date: 09.06.23]

Guitarist, Francesco Savino founded False Memories in 2015, but it was only when he recruited vocalist, Rossella Moscatelli in 2018 that the band’s career gained some momentum.

We reviewed the debut, The Last Night Of Fall two years ago, saying “most songs on the album, to a lesser or greater extent are energised, if that’s the right word, by the soul sucking twilight zone that we seemed to inhabit during the tightest lockdowns.”

Hybrid Ego System has taken a tiny step forward, merging a malleable form of power and prog metal with symphonic rock darkness. It takes a lot of listening to get there, but once you’ve tuned into tracks like ‘Holding On’, ‘Stains’ and ‘Shed My Skin’ then you begin to see the light shining through the gloom.

Elsewhere, there’s little variation in pace, even on the album’s standouts, ‘The Storm Inside’ and ‘Rising Tide’. Each one underlines the unhurried intensity of Moscatelli’s dramatic vocals, frequently switching her sturdy mezzo soprano to a gutteral growl, usually signposted by the dissonant musicality of Savino’s arrangements.

It’s a formula, no doubt about that, but it’s of the band’s own making. One that might need a little more fine tuning to achieve a real breakthrough. ***1/2

Album review: EXTREME – Six

earMusic [Release date: 09.06.23]

Extreme are back with their first album in 15 years, which is quite the hiatus by anyone’s standards. During that time the band have been working on and off and touring sporadically, but the guys are now back, focused, and by the sound of this album, hungry to prove they are still rocking on all cylinders.

Opener ‘Rise’ sets the stall out well with a chunky riff from Nuno Bettencourt driving on what is a ballsy rock song with a hard edge. This is the sound of a band with a point to prove and Nuno’s mid song solo serves as a reminder as to why Extreme were so successful back in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

‘Rebel’ then continues that heavy theme with another hard hitting riff and a strong vocal from Gary Cherone. Gary’s voice may have changed a bit over the years, but is still as strong as ever and the band’s trademark harmonies are still present and correct and ably demonstrated on the chorus of ‘Banshee’.

It’s not all straight forward rock though! Extreme have always been more than that and with ‘Other Side Of The Rainbow’ the band slow the pace and embark on the first melodic rock epic of the album. Lilting melodies and jangly guitars are the backbone here and add in another killer solo from Nuno to complete a cracking song which could feature on any summer soundtrack playlist.

The slower pace continues with ‘Small Town Beautiful’ which again has top notch harmonies that most bands would kill for. This song would have fitted perfectly on the bands ‘III Sides To Every Story’ album which is high praise indeed. ‘The Mask’ then brings back the rock with a chugging riff and tight bottom line provided by Pat Badger on bass and Kevin Figureirado on drums.

We stay in full rocking mode for ‘Thicker Than Blood’ which has a bit of a funky groove to it and a big chorus. This is followed by ‘Save Me’ which is a decent song, but a bit of a filler in all honesty, that jogs along nicely.

An Extreme album wouldn’t be complete without a big ballad and here ‘Hurricane’ fits the bill nicely. An acoustic led track with excellent vocal interplay between Chirone and Bettencourt, this will join nicely with ‘More Than Words’ in a live acoustic interlude come the tour.

Things then take an electronic twist with the keyboard intro and underlying melody of ‘X Out’. This is a bit of a left field track, but an interesting directional change for the album. ‘Beautiful Girls’ then gets us back on track with a throwaway, whimsical song which is also destined for that summertime playlist. You can almost see the tropical beach and the swaying palm trees in the distance…

That just leaves another big ballad, ‘Here’s To The Losers’, to round off the album. The track builds from a low key start, through sweeping verses into a big chorus, complete with a backing choir which then builds to a big finish.

This is a great album which finds a band revitalised and they sound keen to prove the naysayers wrong. There are a couple of less memorable tracks, but overall, the songs on offer are excellent melodic rock with some moments of musical brilliance.

It may have been 15 years, but Extreme still know how to rock!  ****

Album review: THE PAT McMANUS BAND – Live In France

THE PAT McMANUS BAND - Live In France

The Store For Music [Release date 21.07.23]

It’s about time we had a new live album from Pat McManus.  In August 2022 he recorded his gig as part of the Tribal Rock festival nestling above the Cote d’Azur in south-east France.

With an extensive back catalogue, it’s inevitable that he’ll revisit former glories and the setlist majors on the band he formed with his brothers in the late seventies.  So we get ‘Blacklisted’, ‘Runaway Dreams’, ‘Needle In The Groove’, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ and ‘Straight Forward’ originally performed by Mama’s Boys.

Elsewhere the setlist only includes a sprinkling of solo album tracks including ‘Honey Trap’ from the excellent and most recent ‘Full Service Resumed’.

As anyone who has seen McManus live will testify he has an infectious enthusiasm for everything he does, whether that’s the traditional interlude included here (attesting his superb fiddle playing) or the out and out rocking and fluid guitar (as on ‘Blacklisted’ and ‘Got The Right’).

There are a lot of blues rock “power” trios out there but it’s McManus’ lust for life and not least his stellar guitar playing that cuts right through.

The Irish/Gary Moore connection is reflected on an accurate and respectful rendition of ‘Parisienne Walkways’, and the live staple ‘Belfast Boy’, whilst on the ‘Ring Of Fire’ (the Johnny Cash tune) he is joined by fellow festival act Uncle Bard & The Dirty Bastards.

As ever with Store For Music there’s economical packaging and there is a hint that the gig was also filmed for DVD.  If that’s true it’s a shame that it didn’t form part of this release. ***1/2

Gig review: BONNIE RAITT – New Theatre, Oxford, Wednesday 7 June 2023

Bonnie Raitt, Liverpool Empire, 22 June 2013

A sold out show at Oxford’s lovely New Theatre and whilst most of the audience have doubtless been Bonnie Raitt fans since her early days, it was good to see some younger fans dotted around the audience.

Support for Bonnie Raitt’s UK & Ireland tour is Gareth Dunlop, whose recent album ‘Animal’ comes highly recommended by this reviewer. Hard to pigeonhole his musical style – although to quote my review of said album “Sophisticated pop with a modern feel and appeal” – suffice to say he has a showstopper vocal that demands the listener’s attention.

Backed by guitarist Pete Wallace, Gareth Dunlop kept his between song patter to a minimum, bar a recollection of watching ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’ on repeat and in particular Bonnie Raitt! ‘Look Back Smiling’ is one of the highlights on the ‘Animal’ album and it sounded even more powerful when performed live.

He spent many years in Nashville penning songs for TV and film with ‘Devil Like You’ one of those performed this evening. Really loved ‘Train Driver’. First time hearing this and with its hypnotic rhythm, those sublime vocals and a neat lyric, it was another wonderful highlight in a set full of them.

Gareth certainly made many new fans based on this evening’s stunning performance. Rarely have I seen people give a standing ovation to a support act and it is well deserved in this case.

Onto the headliner Bonnie Raitt, whose music this reviewer didn’t know much about until tonight, bar that you always used to see a few of her tour t-shirts at rock and metal gigs down the years. After tonight’s gig this reviewer has a lot of catching up to do on her musical catalogue and what a joy that will be!

Her latest album, the Grammy award winning ‘Just Like That…’, had a few songs scattered around the set including the opening number ‘Made Up Mind’.  ‘Love So Strong’, also from the album, was one of many dedicated to musicians no longer with us. In this case Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals fame.

Bonnie Raitt is a top class blues player and singer, although as tonight’s set proved she enjoys performing in many musical styles. It helps that she has a top draw band consisting of Glen Patscha (keyboards, vocals), Duke Levine (guitarist, vocals) and the tight but loose rhythm section of drummer Ricky Fataar and bassist ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson. It is like listening to a bluesy version of Toto at times as they jam, yet never veer off into self-indulgent solos.

The band thrive on the upbeat ‘No Business’ and ‘Livin’ For The Ones’ (complete with some tasty keys from Glen Patscha), yet are just as much at home on the gentle ‘Love Letter’. There are the hits too with ‘Have A Heart’ and ‘Something to Talk About’ one that got a rousing cheer when the opening notes were played.

One song that stuck in the mind long after it was finished was the Grammy Award winning ‘Just Like That’. The song lyrically details the story of a woman who is visited by the recipient of her son’s heart, which he received in a life-saving organ donation operation. Music has such a power to help and uplift the soul as this song ably demonstrates.

Superlatives don’t really exist to describe the moving version of John Prine’s ‘Angel From Montgomery’. What a voice and for once, no nattering from some annoying members of the audience. As an aside, how nice to be at a gig where there were no phones in the air and the audience were focussed on the here and now.

The set finished with a rip roaring take on the Talking Heads cover ‘Burning Down The House’. What a way to bow out on the main set and a well deserved standing ovation was given to Bonnie and her band.

Two songs in the encore, ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ and the heartfelt ‘One Belief Away’. The latter another song with a strong and uplifting lyric.

Touch of class from Bonnie as she invited Gareth Dunlop back onstage to join herself and her band for a final bow.

What a night of music! Gareth Dunlop surely is destined for bigger stages based on this performance and as for Bonnie Raitt, this reviewer has quite honestly seen and heard one of the best gigs in years. A musical masterclass in putting on an enjoyable and memorable live show. Bonnie Raitt showed why she is one of the all time best blues guitarists and singers, and still at the top of her game.

Album review: VIXEN Rev It Up (remaster)

Rock Candy Records [release date 18.05.23]

Minnesota band Vixen made their major label breakthrough in 1987, after moving to Los Angeles. Two albums were recorded by the original Vixen lineup, Jan Keuhnemund, Janet Gardner, Share Ross and Roxy Petrucci. The second, Rev It Up (1990), has now been remastered and reissued by champions of the AOR/Melodic Rock era, Rock Candy Records.

Unsurprisingly, the huge success of Bon Jovi unknowingly provided a template for all up and coming rock bands on the US westcoast. And so bringing in writers with a proven track record in the genre, like Diane Warren (It Wouldn’t Be Love), Jack Conrad (How Much Love) and Steve Plunkett (Streets In Paradise) seemed the route to sure fire success.

But it was ‘Love Is A Killer’, an eminently durable power ballad, that helped propel the album into the US Billboard Top Twenty. It came from the pen of Harry Paress, who’d written standout material for Quiet Riot, Bobby Kimball, Fiona, Bangalore Choir and others.

The album failed to surpass or even equal the sales of the debut, and so an impatient, dissatisfied label let them go.

The jump from 1990 to today is not so huge in production quality terms as many of the other reissues on the label. Still, the upgraded clarity and punch on this remaster is impressive. ***

Album review: RENOVATIONS – Blank

Renovations

Facebook [Release date 10.06.23]

Renovations are an electro-rock trio based in Edinburgh, who formed in October 2019 when the French singer and bass player, Charlotte was offered a gig opportunity, but she needed to gather a group of likeminded passionate musicians.

She reached out to Italian-born drummer Gian in order to discuss the revival of an old band project. The line-up was completed with Romanian guitarist Ioana and the band began building their alternative sound, starting writing during the first lockdown of 2020.

Inspired by the effects of Brexit, the pandemic, self-isolation, the media and social distancing, they have so far recorded six singles, one EP and a debut album. “Blank” is their second album, recorded at Chamber Studios with engineer Graeme Young and self-produced, it has been funded by Help Musicians UK, and will be released on 10th June 2023.

“The new album is a social, cultural and political commentary, with each song covering a different topic”, the band explain. “Each one of us wrote lyrics on the album, and the specific topics are drawn from personal experience as old as 15 years ago, through to present day.”

This is a young band who’s developing their style based on various influences from Rammstein, to Halestorm, from Blondie to a little Grace Jones, “Blank” is packed with tracks that showcase the powerhouse this trio is surely to become. It’s electro pop meeting heavy metal and I love the variety the album delivers.

Rénovations lyrical social commentary resonates, covering bullying, fighting against the clock, COVID, the relentless online culture, the tracks on the album explore the grey that is so often hidden between the black and white, reading between the lines.

Standout tracks on “Blank” for me
• Precious Stone
• Time is a Common Problem
• Forest
• Repetitions
• Euphoria

This is an exciting band who have produced an interesting album, themselves, whilst they would benefit from an independent producer, it is more than worthy of a listen to expand your musical horizons. I’d compare “Blank” to being like a tasting menu, the tracks are very different in style, influence and arrangement but this just makes you want to try a little more. I’m looking forward to seeing how this band develops and what comes next. ***

Album review: FELLOW ROBOT – Misanthropioid

Fellow Robot

ToneQuake Records [Release date 19.05.23]

Fellow Robot originally started out as a concept piece in 2016, pulling lyrics from the sci-fi novel “The Robot’s Guide to Music” written by singer Anthony Pedroza. While deeply rooted to its origins, “Misanthropioid” is an album that lives closer to reality than science fiction however blurred those lines are these days.

Fellow Robot has teamed up with Andrew Scheps (Green Day, RHCP, Adele, Metallica, Hozier, Johnny Cash) who helped co-produce and mix “Misanthropioid” from his home studio in Wales. Scheps joined the team during the heart of the pandemic in 2020 and over the course of two years helped the band complete the album remotely.

However melancholy and dark “Misanthropioid” is, it’s poetic lyrics and dramatic arrangements could be likened to dark stage production. The album is by no means an easy listen, this deep reflection on the state of the human race will challenge you and provoke thought, which I would imagine is exactly what the band intended.

Fellow Robot named their new album “Misanthropioid”, due to its brutally honest lyrics and melancholy feelings surrounding what it is to be a human. “It’s our soundtrack to the last few years” says Pedroza, adding “it’s a diverse take on the perception of emotion, especially regarding how we feel about our fellow humans”.

The first single, “Talk to Me” is a post punk demonstration “it’s purposefully messy, simple and loud” the band says. “Rabbit” is a reflection on the Black Lives Matter movement in the US.

“Comforting” is a track I can imagine being played at funerals as a reflective, melancholy piece.

“People come and people go, and I don’t know if you’re still alive.

“The Backseat” is a moody track reflecting on the fear of depression and the inability to move forward “I’m afraid. I’ll mess it up again”.

“Crash and Burn” seems to be an outpouring a reflection on a relationship gone wrong “I hope you and I cannot survive” “I want to apologise for you… Again”

“The People Next Door”, this seemingly Beatles influenced track was quite interesting. However, there’s something about the musical arrangement that really jarred, and I can’t really explain why.

“Society has many voices, and the space in between the harshest opinions are the most truthful” says drummer, engineer, and cofounder Luis Renteria. Stand out track of the album for me was “Dull Drone”.

“Poppy Fields” was a track that I liked however at nearly 10 minutes long, it felt excessive or indulgent, I’ll let you decide. The lyrics were clever “please give me peace, let the flowers sing and lull the Earth to sleep”.

“Red Eye Lullaby” is one for anyone who travels frequently by plane between perhaps work and home, a look at the impact of that long distance on a relationship, the commuter and their slog with balancing jet lag with the reunion at the end of the journey. You’ll relate to this, especially if you’ve overindulged on the minibar in advance of or during your flight.

All in all, this is an interesting album, definitely not an easy listen but thought provoking nonetheless and tackling darker areas of life. Perfect backdrop for a moody day and probably better suited to dark evenings than summer nights, appreciate this is more poetry put to music.

An interesting ***.

Album review: NEW ENGLAND – s/t (remaster)

Rock Candy Records  [release date : 12.05.23]

New England relied not on fate or fashion, but on good old fashioned songwriting and hard work, treading the boards, making their name.

Led by the talented John Fannon, and owing a lot to English Progressive Rock, New Wave and the Beatles’ bright, shiny new pop template of the sixties, the band released their debut album in 1979.

Disappointingly, it failed to make the breakthrough it so thoroughly deserved.

‘Don’t Ever Wanna Lose Ya’, their signature track, mixed otherworldly keys with a solid, soaring mix of pop and rock, ‘P.U.N.K.’ matched UK glamrock bands, Sweet, ELO and Wizzard blow for blow.

‘Hello, Hello, Hello’, a tuned-for-radio track up there with the Raspberries and Cheap Trick opened the album in a blaze of powerpop colour, signposting the way to one of those debuts that just seemed destined to succeed big time, but didn’t.

Maybe it was just too derivative for some. Maybe it cut across too many genres for others. Another rock’n’roll mystery.

Originally produced by Mike (Queen/ Foreigner/ Journey) Stone, this remastered version sounds huge, most especially on the towering, wall to wall choruses. At first the album’s sonics register like a huge fanfare, but there are subtleties within the music that only register after several sittings.

Don’t miss this one. ****

Gig review: JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRETT – West End Centre, Aldershot, Saturday 3 June 2023

Billed as the ‘Half A Sentry tour’, John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett team up again for an extensive UK tour, that as the press releases states – “celebrates 5 decades of music making animosity, splits and reunions.”

First visit to Aldershot and their rather splendind West End Centre, a converted Victorian school that has been hosting various arts events in the past 45 years. Musically they have had the likes of Blur and Primal Scream appear, and now the “lucky” folk of Hampshire & beyond have two musical legends appearing, namely John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett. To be fair one is an excellent musician and without naming names it isn’t Otway  ;-)

Opening with ‘Louisa On A Horse’  (with Barrett whipping up a musical frenzy on his violin) and then ‘Gypsy’, the duo only went and played their 1977 hit single, ‘Really Free’! Not many pop stars play their big hit (and to be fair, only hit) so early in their set. A raucous version complete with Barrett on his ‘wah wah wheelie bin’.

Throughout the course of the evening Barrett provided a series of deadpan quips about Otway needing to up his meds and that he should have an increased carer’s allowance for looking after Otway on stage. It was all done in a good natured way although I am not sure he could hide is feelings when Otway went a bit over the top on the singing on ‘Separated’.

The first set closed with ‘Body Talk’ which allowed Otway to make various drum and percussion noises with his body, along with some theremin. For someone who is seventy Otway throws himself into the song with the gusto and energy half his age.

After an instrumental jam to start the second set – basically Otway messing around on the theremin with what sounded like a snippet of ‘White Cliffs Of Dover’ in the mix. Their cover of ‘Two Little Boys’ was delivered in a folk style and one of the few songs where Otway seemed to behave himself.

‘Beware Of The Flowers (‘Cos I’m Sure They’re Going to Get You Yeah)’ may never have been a chart hit, however, as Otway informed us it was voted Britain’s seventh most popular song lyric of the past one hundred years in a 1999 online poll by the BBC. Listening to the duo perform it tonight it is easy to see why it polled so well…

Barrett certainly is a master of the string instruments playing a variety of guitars including a homemade guitar that sounded like a racing car on ‘Racing Cars (Jet Spotter of the Track)’ – or Otway’s old school friend Jeff Potter whose Volkswagen Beetle sounded like the guitar, on whom the song is based on.

Final song of the night was ‘Geneve’, the last of the two encores, although they don’t do encores apparently as this was one cause of the many splits the duo have had through the years. For this one Barrett played guitar and a Bagpus bagpipe, as you do.

Most of the audience tonight had seen them before and the cheers & audience participation showed they knew what was coming, bit like the Rocky Horror Show but without the basques and fishnets!

Seeing these two live is a mix of musical delights, comic timing and theatrical bizareness that on paper shouldn’t work but live these two are a perfect combination. They are on tour until September and you would be missing a treat if you didn’t catch them playing live near you. You get the true punk spirit mixed with comedy from Otway and a healthy dose of folk and musical finesse from Wild Willy Barrett.

Album review: POCO – The Sony/BMG A’s and B’s

POCO - The Sony/BMG A's And B's

BGO Records [Release date 31.03.23]

Poco were the nearly-men of country rock and whilst achieving a modicum of chart success in their early incarnation are perhaps better known for supplying luminaries to other bands.  Enter (or exit) Timothy B. Schmit and Randy Meisner.

This collection brings together the singles they cut for, initially, Epic (between 1969 and 1974 ) and then RCA when they reconstituted in 1989.  And, in the case of ‘My Kind Of Love’ and ‘Hard Luck’ those songs only ever appeared on a single.

Following the departure of Schmit to the Eagles in 1977 the band reconvened with a new bassist and drummer who – together with Paul Cotton, Rusty Young and George Grantham – experienced their greatest period of commercial success with the album ‘Legend’.

However this period is not included on this compilation because it misses out when they were signed to ABC-Dunhill between 1975-1978.

In 1989, now signed to RCA, the band released ‘Legacy’ which reunited the original band members.  Three singles were released from that album and are included here.

Those who wish to explore further may be better served by exploring the various reissues/remasters available from BGO.  This is something of an uneven collection of Poco material and the sleeve notes are a direct lift off Wikipedia.  Shameful.  ***

Album review: FASTWAY – A’s and B’s (The Sony Years)

FASTWAY - A's And B's (The Sony Years)

BGO Records [Release date 09.12.22]

You might think that the combination of Jerry Shirley (Humble Pie), Pete Way (UFO) and “Fast” Eddie Clarke (Motorhead) was a marriage made in heavy rock heaven.  But this original triumvirate only lasted weeks before Way left and ultimately Shirley and Clarke with Dave King on vocals became the mainstays.

Hendrix acolyte Eddie Kramer produced their debut album (1983) which yielded two singles (plus two non-album B-sides ‘Crazy Dream’ and ‘Back In The Game’).  Also included here is the track ‘Far From Home’ which was dropped from later vinyl pressings and was originally a U.S. promo single.

Stylistically the early band was sometimes compared to Led Zeppelin and in that same trajectory they also bring to mind the likes of Budgie and even early Uriah Heep.

‘Steal The Show’, an additional track on the 1984 12″ single ‘All Fired Up’ is omitted, one of two singles included from the band’s second album.  In fact the missing track gave it’s name to the box set released by in 2010 featuring live recordings.

Shirley and bassist Charlie McCracken (ex-Rory Gallagher) were dropped for the third album and ‘Waiting For The Roar’ (1986) featured Eddie Clarke and Dave King from the original album line-up and a more santitized sound with greater use of keyboards.

This collection omits the track ‘Kill Me With Your Heart’ which was released as a 12″ promo.  ‘Don’t Stop The Fight’ underlines that they were starting to sound like any number of bands on the other side of the pond and in the shade of Sunset Strip.

Four tracks are included from the band’s horror soundtrack ‘Trick Or Treat’ released as an EP in 1986 and the last to feature King on vocals.

In truth this compilation must get a star docked for the omission of the two tracks (they could have been squeezed on) but by way of reparation BGO have re-released the first three Fastway albums (the first two available as a 2 on 1 CD).

There were various attempts to revive Fastway over the years, including latterly with Toby Jepson on vocals.  Eddie Clarke died in 2018, Pete Way in 2020.  This compilation captures the band in all their former glory and in what many believe to be the definitive iterations. ***1/2

Gig review: JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

We need to catch the sadly declining number of living legends while we still can, especially those few still coming over from the USA to the UK. One person who fits that description is former Creedence Clearwater Revival lead singer, guitarist and songwriter John Fogerty.

CCR in their short life fused the sounds of the British invasion with varied influences from the traditional music of the deep south, creating a swamp rock sound that defied their Californian origins. While we can talk of the influence that the Beatles, Stones, Who and Kinks had on popular music, they arguably rank alongside the Beach Boys and the Byrds as the most significant American rock acts to come out of the sixties (there’s a new conversation topic to fill any awkward gaps in pub chat with your music mates).

JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

Appreciation of their work has been reawakened by the recent film of their 1970 European tour and its blistering Royal Albert Hall gig, and so presumably the hope was that this fresh interest and a rare UK appearance for the ‘Celebration Tour’ would fill the 02, where he last played in 2018 on a co-headline with Steve Miller.

However that proved optimistic with big gaps in the cavernous bowl seating and quiet concourses. In hindsight the crowd could have been squeezed into a totally sold out Albert Hall and that would have been even more special.

JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

There was a somewhat unusual opening: first as the lights dimmed, it was for a longish video interview with him, and then when the band came on an awkward silence as his guitar refused to make a sound. Fortunately within seconds we were up and running with one of Creedence’s most out and out rockers in ‘Up Around the Bend’, followed by the swampy grooves of ‘Green River’ and ‘Born On the Bayou’. ‘Rock and Roll Girls’ was the first of only a few trips into his solo catalogue – its eighties provenance betrayed by a prominent keyboard intro and a searing solo from flamboyant sax player Rob Stone.

The theme of the evening was that of later life contentment from a man who has suffered more than most from the vicissitudes of the industry expressing particular delight he finally owned the rights to his own songs again. It was also a family affair as sons Shane and Tyler-  who had opened proceedings with their own band Hearty Har- were his supporting guitarists and most of his family got a name check, notably wife Julie, as his tribute to her, ‘Joy of My Life’, saw wedding and other family photos form a backdrop to his acoustic guitar and Rob’s sax playing.

JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

He also looks remarkably unchanged from CCR days, clad in trademark blue check shirt and neckerchief and with an enviable lead of hair. For sure, his voice no longer has the raw primeval power of the young Fogerty and is a little thinner but he still sounded good and was able to deliver the classics in recognisable form.

The set took a pattern of pop nuggets in under three minutes like ‘Who’ll Stop The Rain’,  ‘Looking Out My Back Door’ and ‘Lodi’- and some longer workouts notably ‘Run Through the Jungle’ where he played harmonica and ‘Effigy’ which was one for the Creedence connoisseur in an otherwise exclusively greatest hits set. ‘Keep On Choogling’ saw him charging about the stage reeling off solos with the vibrancy of a man 20 years younger.

JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

Suddenly during ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain’ I noticed that the front block, which had to date been resolutely seated in the main, were now to their feet and stayed there for the rest of the set, making for one of the best atmospheres I’ve seen in this rather corporate venue. It helped that he casually slipped in ‘Bad Moon Rising’ which I later discovered should have been the opener but for that technical hitch. I was listening out to see whether he would sing the famous mondegreen ‘there’s a bathroom on the right’ -and I think he did!

From now on it was one classic after another to get people moving, from the joyful ‘Down On the Corner’ to a rocking ‘Travelling Band’ to a singalong to the bluegrass-like ‘Cottonfields’ which turned South East London temporarily into a little part of Dixie. Briefly raising the spectre of that ridiculous lawsuit when he was accused of plagiarising himself ‘The Old Man Down the Road’ took on a different feel with a lengthy jam led by Shane before Dad joined in, then a fast and furious ‘Fortunate Son’ closed the set.

JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

A toast with something sparkling summed up the celebratory air of the evening before a couple of even more singalong encores. There was a link as they were both Fogerty compositions arguably made more famous by others, starting with ‘Rocking All Over the World’, though I still prefer the Quo version with its added outro, then with a portrait of the two behind him, he then paid tribute to Tina Turner, generously saying she had made ‘Proud Mary’ her signature song.

The set was a little short at an hour and a half and it would have been nice to hear a few more of his solo songs like ‘Centerfield’ (though a celebration of baseball is a bit niche for a UK audience) and ‘Almost Saturday Night’, which was only aired on tape as the band left the stage.

JOHN FOGERTY- 02 Arena, London, 29 May 2023

Nevertheless this thoroughly enjoyable show did what it said on the tin, a celebration of his life and work and Creedence in particular. The missing thousands missed out on a treat. An extremely vigorous looking 78, maybe this wasn’t a farewell to the UK after all?

Rising Stars: BLACKLIST UNION

Blacklist Union have released the title track from their upcoming new album, Letters from the Psych Ward. This will be Blacklist Union’s fifth album and is slated for a September 2023 release. We catch up with singer Tony West to find out more…

1.What is your earliest memory of music?

My earliest memory of music is when I was five years old and I pointed to a poster and asked my uncle, “who is that girl?” And he said, “that’s no girl, that’s David Bowie.” My life was never the same for me. Shortly after that I discovered punk rock, hard rock, and all kinds of music.

2. Tell us about the first gig you attended?

That same uncle took me to see AC/DC at Madison Square Garden when I was 11 years old and in seventh grade.

3. And the first gig you played?

First gig I ever played was at a club called FM Station in North Hollywood, CA. I was in my first band that was a Ramones tribute band that’s still around. They are called Gabba Gabba Hey. And Lemmy from Motörhead came to my first gig.

4. You’ve worked Todd Youth (Agnostic Front, Cro-mags, Murphy’s Law,
Danzig), Jay Gordon (Orgy), Kevin Wood (Malfunkshun), Saliva and Jon E. Love (Love/Hate) – that’s quite the list! Who would you most like collaborate with in future?

I am honored to have worked with all those people. I tell you who I would like to work with is Johnny Rico. He is the guitar player in Warrior Soul. I’d love to work with him. Of course I’d love to work with Slash or Duff or both… Jerry Cantrell would be awesome. Dean DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots. I respect them all as songwriters and would like to work with those guys. Especially Johnny Rico… I’m hoping we can write the next Blacklist Union record together.

5. How does the new Blacklist Union album differ from the previous releases?

We are on a much bigger scale for this album than we have ever had for any of our four previous releases. This is a much larger playing field for us. We are working with professional top-class musicians. We have been shooting two videos at a time in Houston, TX with pros. We have a great management team and are working with campaigns in the UK for European representation.

6. Which track in the forthcoming album are you most proud of and why?

I am proud of the actual album itself. Recording the vocals for “Mia” was epic. Here’s a great story about that…

When I was about to record the vocals for ‘Mia’ I was texting Josey from Saliva that I was scared to do this. He was like, “you’re gonna kick ass.” Then the producer and engineer were both like, “you know, this is kind of a hard song.” I was like, “no I’ll be fine.” So, I did one pass of the song and I’ll never forget… Our producer Chris and our engineer Ghian both stood up in the control room with their arms up in the air cheering because I nailed the song all the way through on the first take.

I’m also proud of the way the songs come together and come to life. I love listening to the playbacks. There were a couple times it made me cry. ‘Dancing with the Angels’ has made me cry. ‘Mia’ has made me cry. ‘Dirty Halo’ has made me cry. And then there’s the up-tempo songs like ‘Letters from the Psych Ward,’ and ‘Out on a Jones.’ I’m just so proud of those songs cause they’re such rockers.

7. What has been the highlight of your career to date?

My swan song moment was singing in Malfunkshun with Andy Wood’s brother, my hero’s brother… In their hometown with all the camps there. Soundgarden camp. Nirvana camp. Alice In Chains camp. Everyone was there including Andrew and Kevin’s mom, who I took out to lunch that day.

That was the moment in my world I knew I made it because I’m singing in my hero’s band who I learned everything from. For me, all the haters that told me I couldn’t do it along the way for whatever reason, that all ceased to exist because here I was singing in my hero’s band in front of his mother, his friends, his family, his fans…

And I remember that right before I went onstage, I prayed on my knees backstage and I said “Please God, please let Andy use me as a channel. Please do not let me make this about myself. Use me as a channel for Andy’s mother, his family, his friends, his brother… And that’s exactly what happened. That shit was so heavy. I took Scott Willis… He’s a road dog motherfucker. He’s worked for Saliva; he’s been my tech when I’m touring and stuff.I remember after that gig we were so elated from that whole experience.

And then when we were walking into the fuckin’ airport in Seattle, all of a sudden I look at Scott and I am like, “Oh my God listen!” We stop, and out of all the fucking songs in the world to be playing in the airport in Seattle leaving a gig was fucking “Stardog Champion.” It was playing throughout the whole airport man. If that wasn’t a sign from the universe, from the Gods, from the fuckin’ spirit world… It absolutely was. That is my most beautiful moment so far.

I’ve had other moments too where my son and I sang onstage together. I’ve performed in front of people I really respect. I would have to say hands down the whole Malfunkshun Seattle experience was my most triumphant moment.

The nearly-men of melodic rock returned as the now-men in the millennium…

In the twenty years of Get Ready to ROCK! one phenomena has been the renaissance of bands who “back in the day” never fully realised their potential or ambitions.  This was usually due to the prevailing musical climate or poor management and marketing.  One such band were UK melodic rockers FM.

The band were formed in 1984 and centred around the Overland brothers who were formerly in the band Wildlife.  They widened their audience initially on tour as support to artists such as Foreigner and Magnum but most significantly in 1986 with Bon Jovi on the UK leg of their ‘Slippery When Wet’ tour.

The band was hampered by label changes, firstly their original label Portrait folded and after a time with Epic they moved to Music For Nations.  The big U.S. breakthrough never happened although Steve and Chris Overland worked with hit writer Desmond Child on 1989′s ”Tough It Out to produce the classic song ‘Bad Luck’.  Soon after, Chris Overland left and was replaced by Andy Barnett and – for 1995′s ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ – Jem Davis became their keyboard player replacing Didge Digital.  The band split soon after.

There was talk of a reunion and new album as early as 2003 when Jason Ritchie reviewed the triple-CD retrospective ‘Long Time No See‘ with Vinny Burns mooted as new guitarist joining the 1995 line-up.  Instead, Steve Overland and drummer Pete Jupp contributed to The Ladder (together with one-time FM bassist Bob Skeat), resurrecting some FM tunes, and also the start of Overland’s separate solo life with the label Escape Music in the guise of Overland, Shadowland, Ozone, and latterly the Bad Company-inspired Lonerider.  (The label also re-issued ‘Takin’ It To The Streets’ and ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ in 2005).

However it wasn’t until 2007 that FM were invited to headline the annual melodic rock event Firefest at Nottingham’s Rock City.

As Ian Pollard wrote: “the long awaited re-emergence of one of Britain’s (mostly) hidden AOR gems. I first encountered FM in the mid-80s when they supported Magnum on tour, and was blown away by their performance then – specifically Steve Overland’s vocal.

Back now with a more reasonable (i.e. non-80s) hairstyle, and old partners Pete Jupp, Andy Barnett, Mervyn Goldsworthy and Jem Davis, FM carry on where they left off, delivering melodic rock of the highest quality in an assured and professional manner. Even a temporary power failure in the middle of the set couldn’t knock them out of their stride – not bad for a band that hasn’t played together for so long.”

Having received an encouraging reception at Firefest, FM decided to record a new album their first for over a decade.  They also had a new guitarist – Jim Kirkpatrick – and ‘Metropolis’ was released in 2010.  It was a popular choice amongst reviewers in that year’s “best of” the year poll.

FM - Metropolis (2010)

This will make so many year end ‘best of’ lists and rightly so. The band took their time in recording this album and it has paid off. They have taken the best of their past and added in some new twists to keep it fresh. Great to have the band back and get your copy pronto.
***** Jason Ritchie

Album review (Metropolis, 2010)

Members of the GRTR! team attended the Metropolis launch party in February 2010 at the Roadhouse venue in Covent Garden, London.  (It was our first team get-together!).  The climax of the gig was the surprise appearance of Mick Ralphs for the encore ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’.

David Randall chatted to Jim Kirkpatrick and Steve Overland in April 2010 coinciding with the release of their first “comeback” album ‘Metropolis’.

Both Jason Ritchie and Andy Nathan were long-time fans of the band and named their debut ‘Indiscreet’ and follow-up  ‘Tough It Out’ as favourites.

FM - The Roadhouse, Covent Garden, London, 7 February 2010Photo: Noel Buckley

In his review of the band in July 2010, when they played Islington Academy, Andy commented “when FM called it a day in 1996 after over a decade of not quite making the big time, we never ever expected to see days like this again. But since reforming for Firefest in 2007, the finest melodic rock band produced on Britain’s shores have come back better than ever.”

FM - Islington Academy, London, 9 July 2010

Andy continued “One criticism that could be levelled at FM first time round was that they clinically targeted their musical style to fit the times, from the ‘pink and fluffy’ keyboard heavy debut, to the Bon Jovi-isms of Tough It Out, to their bluesier phase riding Thunder’s coat tails.

However 2010 FM sound all the better for just being themselves and a trio of new songs mid-set were among the highlights of the set. ‘Hollow’ had the pop rock hooks that attracted Radio 2 playlisters, ‘Over You’ combined a shuffling beat with the best dual guitar jam this side of a Wishbone Ash gig, and ‘Flamingo Road’ had a classic seventies feel to it.”

And in October 2010 David Randall caught the band playing at The Tivoli in North Wales and emphasised the difficulty of satisfying long term fans with deeper cuts and focusing on the more immediate stuff to satiate others.

“…it is clear that old-time fans will have their own particular favourites (and requests). ‘Only The Strong Survive’, ‘Blood And Gasoline’ and ‘Closer To Heaven’ are strong songs but veer towards fairly predictable American AOR which may well be the reason for the band’s original demise. There were too many other bands on the block who could steal their thunder (including Thunder) but more especially with the benefit of better management and record label support.

With such a glorious back catalogue, FM could afford to be a little more edgy in their choice of material.  ‘Dangerous’ even.  And come to think of it: where the hell was that track?”

He went on “Whilst gigs like this bring out the closet FM fans who dust off their sometime discarded picture discs and yellowed limited edition boxes, I wonder just how many of these hardcore still exist? This means that FM have the new challenge of converting a new generation of fans and at Download this year – in spite of the unearthly midday slot – they managed to do this.”

FM - GIANTS OF ROCK – Butlins, Minehead, 27 January 2019Photo: David Randall

Andy Nathan added, reviewing the band’s December 2010 gig “it is noticeable that the band are tighter than ever as a unit and seem to take a visible delight in playing together.”

David Randall chatted to Jim Kirkpatrick and Steve Overland in October 2011 coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the ‘Indiscreet’ album.  The band re-recorded the album on its 30th anniversary in 2016.

With the revival of interest in FM there were inevitably some reissues.  In 2012 Rock Candy Records released an expanded ‘Indiscreet’ and ‘Tough It Out’ and that year the band celebrated the 25th Anniversary of ‘Indiscreet’ with a tour and playing the album in full.  Said Andy: “This was definitely an occasion special enough to squeeze the original tour T-shirt with the infamous pink logo into a stomach less slim than it was in those days!” And Jason Ritchie concurred, it was “A night of pure nostalgia”.

For their next release – ‘Rockville’ in 2013 – the band embraced crowd-funding with the now-defunct Pledge Music.  And, as they indicated to Jason Ritchie, they couldn’t rest on former glories and assume they could take their original audience with them.  “We also need to build on our loyal core of fans so we can go on to bigger and better things.” The new album was previewed via the EP release ‘Only Foolin”.

In his review of ‘Rockville’ David Randall pondered on the merits of crowd-funding which he thought may compromise the creativity as the band essentially were satisfying direct paymasters.  “Bands could end up producing safe, comfortable albums for safe, comfortable audiences.”

FM - Rockville

FM are a great band and a great bunch of guys,  evidently revelling in their second coming,  but there’s no idea from this album that they are in any way stretching themselves or reaching out to a younger audience.  It’s like the car on the cover : solid and reliable in its day but not very sexy.  ***1/2 David Randall

Album review (Rockville, 2013)

Randall was more impressed with the companion album “Rockville II” which was released after the “main” album as part of the crowd-funding package : “Taken in the round, a renascent band to be reckoned with and a great overall **** package.”

Andy Nathan reviewed the album launch in March 2013 and it brought back happy memories “… hearing them open with Indiscreet’s AOR  classics ‘I Belong To The Night’ and ‘That Girl’ in a small club like this was bringing back memories of the days around 1986, when my brother and our other teenage friends used to rock out to them down the old Marquee and were convinced – sadly misguidedly – that they had the image and radio friendly tunes to follow Bon Jovi into the charts.”

FM, Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 23 March 2013
Photo: Noel Buckley

And both Andy and Jason Ritchie saw the band’s full UK tour to promote the album when Andy commented: “28 years on from when I first saw them supporting REO Speedwagon,  FM may never have reached the heights many of us predicted, but they have never sounded better, and they certainly seem to have a real unforced joy in performing live which transmits itself to the fans and back again. On the basis of this heartwarming evening, the timeless charms of Britain’s best ever melodic rock band are here to stay.”

Jason added “For the final encore of ‘Other Side Of Midnight’ original keyboards player Didge Digital was welcomed to the stage to rapturous applause and what a fitting end to one of the best FM gigs I have seen (and by my reckoning this was the seventh time I have seen them since 1985!).”

2014 started with an appearance at the Giants Of Rock event in Minehead and, in March, the ‘Futurama‘ release which as Jason Ritchie noted was classed as an EP but stretched to an hour’s worth of music including six tracks recorded live in Crewe.

During April they rubbed shoulders with Foreigner and Europe on a UK arena tour.  Reviewing their Manchester gig David Randall commented “it also reinforced the view that overall FM could do with a little more grit in their mix and perhaps an acknowledgment that 1986 was nearly 30 years ago.”

During the summer they headlined at the Cambridge Rock Festival when Andy Nathan wrote “FM’s show was almost faultless and at 30 they have probably never sounded better and won several new friends.”  The 30th anniversary celebrations continued with a tour in November “The most impressive aspect was the way material from the very old and post-reformation periods merged seamlessly…”

FM - The Globe, Cardiff, 22 November 2014
Photo: Darren Griffiths

A day later Darren Griffiths reviewed and photographed the band in Cardiff and describing the finale:  “…if you are not already moving or clapping your hands at this stage then there really isn’t much hope for you.”

By the end of 2014 FM were a late addition to Planet Rockstock in South Wales where Darren effused “They all but stole the show.”

In 2015, once again, the FM year started with a festival – the HRH AOR event in Pwllheli reviewed by Darren “I have never seen these guys play a bad show and like a fine wine they just get better and better with age, but they always have the knack of making me feel 21 again.”

FM - Heroes And Villains

The days when they hoped to make the big time and shifted their sound to catch prevailing trends are long gone with no pressure to provide a hit single, though many of these songs could easily gain airplay on the now classic rock-friendly Radio 2. And yet the overriding impression is that this is probably the most overtly commercial of the albums they have recorded since reforming, possibly even since 1989′s ‘Tough It Out’.  ****1/2 Andy Nathan

Album review (Heroes And Villains, 2015)

FM - Bierkeller, Bristol, 1 May 2015Photo: Darren Griffiths

The band followed the release of their new album with a UK tour, reviewed again by Darren Griffiths who noted “the majority of FM fans want the anthems which get them clapping and singing along one after another.”

The band appeared at the fifth Steelhouse Festival in July whilst in November a short set of dates became a warm-up for their first major European sojourn since their reunion.  By December ‘Heroes And Villains’ had been voted Top Album in our end of year popular poll.

In reviewing FM’s set at the Great British Rock & Blues event in Skegness in early 2016 Pete Feenstra wrote: “Such is FM’s impact that those unfamiliar with the band’s material are soon converted. They quickly draw the crowd in with a magnificent set that to the untutored ear sounds like a cross between Foreigner and The Moody Blues!”

30 years on, in 2016 the band re-recorded their classic debut ‘Indiscreet’ and added some new tracks.  (Interestingly, when the band were interviewed by David Randall in 2011, they showed little interest in re-imagining the album although acknowledging the original lacked something in terms of production.  See interview, above).

A promotional tour followed in November when they played the album in its entirety. As Andy Nathan noted: “The hair may be shorter and greyer but the songs sounded timeless with their prominent keyboards, and massive, albeit telegraphed, choruses made for radio…” Their set was rounded off with a re-appearance of special guest Bernie Marsden.

2018 was headed by an appearance at Giants Of Rock when Pete Whalley followed Darren Griffiths’ earlier comments about the band’s ascendance: “Offering punch, pizzaz and soul in equal measure, the band made short work of that tricky warm up slot as the weekend got up and running.”  This year saw the release of a new album ‘Atomic Generation’ which saw the band explore some different musical directions.

Best of all, while this music is often an instant fix, with each repeated listening it edges closer to being my favourite of FM’s post-reformation albums.  ***** Andy Nathan

Album review (Atomic Generation, 2018)

Steve Overland chatted to David Randall in February 2018 about the band and the new album ‘Atomic Generation’.  First broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, 4 March 2018 and re-edited in 2023.

Later that year David Wilson, our Live Editor, witnessed FM on a three-way bill with heavy rockers Saxon and Wayward Sons “and proved that they can rock hard and heavy when required!”

GREAT BRITISH ROCK & BLUES FESTIVAL – Butlins, Skegness, 18-20 January 2019
Photo: Stephen Wilson

And, then, early in 2019, he reviewed the band at the Great British Rock & Blues Show in Skegness. “From the smooth vocal delivery of Steve Overland to the driving guitar work from Jim Kirkpatrick this was a fantastic set filled with classic melodic rock from one of the UK’s best.”

Jason Ritchie saw the band’s gig at Sub 89 in Reading with “A real fans’ setlist with plenty of dips into their 80′s era and a good smattering of songs from the current line-up since 2007.”

Since their 2007 comeback, and as reflected in our reviews, FM had been constantly gigging and this was largely encapsulated on “The Italian Job” CD/DVD release recorded at their label Frontiers festival event in Milan.

FM- The Italian Job (CD/DVD)

They may be too subtle a band to blow the proverbial doors off as in the eponymous film, but this release successfully manages to capture the definitive FM and confirm they just get better with age.

Album review (The Italian Job, 2019)

The band played the Ramblin’ Man Fair in July.  The band were prevented immediately touring their next studio album released in May 2020 due to Covid.

FM - Synchronized

…this is a more diverse album than its immediate predecessors ‘Heroes and Villains’ and ‘Atomic Generation’. It is never less than melodic, but draws inspiration from a broader palette of musical styles than pure AOR.  **** Andy Nathan

Album review (Synchronized, 2020)

Let’s briefly step back in time to precisely 30 years ago. The wider world saw the Hillsborough tragedy, the Tiananmen Square massacre and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In the world of rock, the glamorous American giants ruled the scene with Bon Jovi headlining the Milton Keynes Bowl, Skid Row rising from nowhere and Aerosmith’s ‘Pump’ topping most of the end of year lists – though the presence alongside it of Faith No More’s ‘The Real Thing’ was a hint the scene was on the cusp of big change.

I was 22, in my first permanent job and using every spare penny to travel into London to catch bands at places like the Marquee and the Astoria, that I had read about as every Wednesday lunchtime was spent in WH Smith in Bracknell browsing Kerrang!, Metal Hammer and Sounds.

I was a confirmed FM fan and after a worryingly long absence they were relaunching their career with ‘Tough It Out’ and, helped by top producer Neil Kernon and outside songwriting assistance from the likes of Desmond Child, surely world domination beckoned once they cracked the UK Top 40?

Andy Nathan, December 2019

In 2020 they released a souvenir of their “Big Three-O” tour in 2019 celebrating the 30th anniversary of ‘Tough It Out’. Andy Nathan described the original, sophomore, release “as their most slickly produced and commercially successful album, albeit not to the level they deserved.”

FM Tough It Out Live

This is actually best viewed not as a companion to the ‘Tough It Out’ disc but a coda to their  ‘Italian Job’ live album from a couple of years back which faithfully captured their core live set. This time the ‘Indiscreet’ favourites are overlooked, though a version of ‘Dangerous’, as ever,  is a reminder of the folly of leaving it off that debut album.
**** ¼ Andy Nathan

Album review (Tough It Out Live, 2021)

Andy was more circumspect about the band’s latest studio album ‘Thirteen’ released in March 2022 writing: “It continues (Synchronized’s) attempt to catch the full variety of their repertoire, including bluesier and soulful influences, rather than rely solely on the big and breezy AOR choruses they are most associated with.”

FM-Thirteen

Steve Overland’s singing is as superb as ever throughout and the playing is very good, with a greater groove and feel than before.  However the songs didn’t do it for me on the first couple of listens, being neither as direct nor well written as before and particularly in the second half some of them tread water.

Though clearly an album that grows on you after a few listens rather than an instant fix, at present it’s my least favourite FM album since reforming.  *** ¾ Andy Nathan

Album review
(Thirteen, 2022)

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022
Photo: Andy Nathan

The band’s tour in April 2022 to promote the album emphasised that there was a bluesier element creeping back into the mix, as evidenced in recent albums, as the band showed they were prepared to stray from the familiar melodic rock template and be even more adventurous in the setlist.

At their Islington Assembly gig, as Andy noted, they included the rarely if ever played ‘Crack Alley’ from third album ‘Takin’ It To The Streets’ whilst ‘Story Of My Life’ continued to be a set-piece showcase for Steve Overland’s soulful and consistently high class vocal.

In August the band headlined the inaugural Firestorm event in Manchester and they rounded off the year touring with The Dead Daisies and Graham Bonnet in December. It was Andy’s fourth FM gig that year!

The past couple of years has seen Jim Kirkpatrick release a couple of solo albums and Steve Overland has released the second Groundbreaker album. Jem Davis released a solo album under the name of  Pepperkid2 which also featured bandmates Fitzpatrick and Overland.  The band continue to tour, with their latest outing a three-way with Tyketto and Dare in May 2023.

Andy Nathan believes  “the greatest feature of the post reunion FM albums is that they don’t feel forced.” Echoing his 2010 review: “First time round, with the pressure to make it big, they seemed to chase the current trend a bit too overtly, from keyboardsy AOR at the start to trying to emulate Thunder’s blues rock success in the early nineties.

Nowadays, helped by the fact that Jim Kirkpatrick is equally comfortable in both these styles, they can go in a variety of directions and just sound like themselves.”

And what about the albums?  Andy continues: “There are differences of degree as, in general, ‘Heroes And Villains’ and ‘Atomic Generation’ were closer in style to the first two albums, whereas on ‘Synchronized’ and their most recent to date, ‘Thirteen’ they have been confident to take more chances with a diverse sound and let those soul and blues influences loose, albeit with more uneven results.”

FM are one of the bands he has seen the most times (the other is Wishbone Ash). “The live set always does a good job in striking the balance between promoting new product and the oldies fans of a certain vintage demand to hear. Their first two albums ‘Indiscreet’ and ‘Tough It Out’ have both been played in full on a tour and the former even re-recorded to a beefier production standard.

It can be difficult for a new song to gain a lasting foothold in the set, but some of their best material has done so, from the twin guitar shuffle of ‘Over You’, sunny anthem ‘Life Is A Highway’, ‘Crosstown Train’ and above all the ballad ‘Story Of My Life’, a showcase for Steve Overland’s still incredible voice. ‘Turn This Car Around’, from Thirteen, is likely to have legs too.”

And in summing up, our Melodic Rock Editor notes “Virtually all bands active in the eighties and early nineties seem to have eventually reformed in some form during GRTR!’s life. I would argue FM are one of the few who can justifiably claim to have returned even better than the first time.”

Gig review: FM/DARE/TYKETTO – Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

The package tour is growing in popularity in the current economic climate as a way of bands combining forces to save on overheads and play in front of maximum audiences. Announced just before Christmas, this particular triple header was most melodic rock fans’ dream gift, combining arguably Britain’s two finest ever AOR bands and in Tyketto an act of equal quality who have always been confirmed anglophiles.

It was a tour that would have seemed inconceivable when each were building a following but falling just short of the big time in the late eighties and early nineties, let alone when the changing musical tastes made it an uphill struggle after that point. It is a tribute to the resilience of all three bands and the scene in general that we could now experience a night like this, and there were healthy crowds on the whole tour, whose twelve dates culminated in this London show. (And having heard rave reports from the earlier shows, I was mighty relieved when show time came and no-one had fallen ill during the course of the tour!)

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

This was a genuine co-headline tour in which each band had an hour each and the running order swapped from night to night, and on this occasion Tyketto opened. Danny Vaughn wears his heart on his sleeve and could barely conceal the irritation in his voice with the security searches and slow admission as they came on slightly late.

It was a revamped lineup – indeed with the departure of drummer Michael Clayton Arbeeny, Danny is now the last man standing from the original quartet – and by opening with the title cut of most recent album ‘Reach’ (its intro being not the only song tonight to remind me of Bon Jovi’s ‘Blood On Blood’) he showed the night would not just be about nostalgia. However,  two of the opening classic trio from ‘Don’t Come Easy’ in ‘Wings’ and ‘Burning Down Inside’ had the crowd singing along to every word, and Danny’s voice, 30 years on, was a masterclass in both power and control.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

They were followed by more fan favourites in ‘Strength In Numbers’ and ‘Lay Your Body Down’, locking into a groove infused jam with some delightfully funky bass work from Chris Childs.

New guitarist Harry Scott Elliott fitted in seamlessly – perhaps a touch less heavy than immediate predecessor Chris Green but fluently melodic in effortless fashion, while Ged Rylands is a key part of their modern day sound, for his backing vocals as much as keys. The latter was in evidence on the opening to ‘Heaven Tonight’, where both Danny – who has made the song his own over the years- and new drummer Johnny Dee revisited their Waysted days and paid tribute to the late Pete Way and Paul Chapman.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

Either side of more favourites in ‘Rescue Me’, featuring a singalong, and ‘Sail Away’, Danny strapped on his acoustic and apologised for breaking the flow of a shorter set with a ballad but ‘Standing Alone’ was a vocal tour de force helped by an excellent band arrangement, that just could not have been left out of the set.

Even then though, there was a curveball with a never before attempted cover of UFO’s ‘Mother Mary’. Even though I could see fewer people mouthing along than to their own songs, it was a splendid version with Danny and Harry for my money getting closer to the Mogg-Schenker spirit than the occupants of their current bands. It was back to familiar territory with what I only half-joke is the melodic rock anthem in ‘Forever Young’, normally a climax to the night but this time only whetting our appetite for more glories to come.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

Dare were less of a surprise package for me if only because I’d seen them just weeks ago on a Swedish cruise ship, as well as at this very venue last autumn. This time round the attendance was several times higher than on that night and you could see that lifted charismatic vocalist Darren Wharton, who had an even wider smile on his face than normal.

As usual with Dare, even an hour long set was one of two halves, beginning with showcasing newer material. They opened with a pair of newies in a rocking ‘Born In the Storm’ then ‘Cradle To The Grave’ with Darren’s wonderfully warm, almost whispered tones, though after ‘Home’, ‘Until’ and the title track of last album ‘Road To Eden’, with Vinny Burns shining on guitar, I was ready for a break from a series of mid-tempo, gaelic-themed songs.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

That came in a complete about turn with a pair from what Darren called their ‘heavy metal” album in ‘Blood From Stone’,  Vinny soloing almost John Sykes-like on his Les Paul during ‘Wings Of Fire’, followed by the irresistible ‘Emerald’ redux of ‘We Don’t Need a Reason’. With the return of drummer Greg Morgan for this tour, four of the quintet that recorded that album are back in the fold (and we can excuse the exception, Brian Cox for being otherwise occupied) and it is great to see the band finally able to recapture that heaviness when needed- indeed  there are plans afoot to make a re-recording.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

The final quartet harked back to their Out Of The Silence’ debut with the glorious keyboards of Marc Roberts introducing the bouncing AOR melodies of ‘Abandon’ and ‘Into The Fire’, then (with ‘The Raindance a casualty of the time constraint) a closing pair that presaged the trademark Dare celtic sound: Darren’s heartfelt tribute to mentor Phil Lynott, ‘King Of Spades’ with a wonderful solo from Vinny that segued into a segment of Lizzy’s ‘Black Rose’, and the anthemic ‘Return The Heart. The band were not only filling out the sound with backing vocals but charging about the stage, arms regularly around each other’s shoulders.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

It was a high energy show to confirm that over recent years, following a descent into rather too mellow and folky an approach, Dare have fully regained their original mojo and more.

And finally to FM, closing the night but experienced in the constraints of a triple headliner having toured with Gun and Dan Reed Network in 2019. After the intensity of Tyketto’s set and Dare’s energetic conclusion, there was a danger they would take time to build up a head of steam, and they actually opened a little tentatively with ‘Synchronised’. But that classic keyboard intro from a well-looking Jem Davis heralded a much loved debut album classic in ‘I Belong To The Night’, before a return to nearer he present day in ‘Killed By Love’ with an earworm  ’who-oah’ outro.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

Whether by accident or design, the set placed a greater emphasis on their more straight ahead AOR side than the bluesier diversions that they do equally well.

Constantly on tour, one advantage they have over Dare is they shake the setlist up to rotate fan favourites back into the set from time to time. Though in this case, Steve Overland cursed the popular vote for ‘Someday You’ll Come Running’ with its soaring choruses difficult even for this maestro to reach. However on ‘Everytime I Think Of You’ his soulful, even Michael Boltonian delivery made it even more of a mystery that it failed to be the crossover hit the band needed at the time.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

It was one of three mid-set songs that ended with a harmony lead guitar solo between the talented Jim Kirkpatrick and Steve, the others being ‘Let Love Be The Leader’ and a relative obscurity in a bright and breezy ‘Tattoo Needle’ from the usually neglected ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ album with Jem almost bouncing up and down at his keyboard.

After those diversions aside it was back to a series of old FM favourites,  the crowd joining in every ‘who-oah’ to ‘That Girl’, ‘Bad Luck’ and Tough It Out’ making for a great atmosphere. It was further enhanced by the band’s obvious sense of fun and camaraderie especially when Jim (the new boy at a mere 14 years service) pulls expressions and dares the others not to laugh.

FM/DARE/TYKETTO- Islington Academy, London, 25 May 2023

But, and at the risk of repeating myself, the post reformation FM is far more than a nostalgic trip in a time machine, a fact proved by the fact they ended with ‘Turn This Car Around’ from last album ‘13’ – with Jem’s piano work and Pete Jupp’s crashing drums in particular calling ‘Blood On Blood’ to mind – and the audience reaction was just as strong.

There was no sense of battle of the bands-style rivalry here, just gratitude and mutual respect for three great acts who have successfully ridden out the storm of fleeting musical fashions. Each made the most of their hour in the spotlight with barely a moment wasted, and the combined effect was an evening just as memorable as the melodic rock community anticipated when this tour was announced. Even better various noises from the stage hinted there may be more tours like this to come.

Album review: FURY WEEKEND – Afterglow

FURY WEEKEND - Afterglow

FiXT Music [Release date 25.05.23]

Presenting ‘New to GRTR!’ each week for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio I have become aware of the increasing number of bands combining electronica and rock.  I have to say the FiXT label has much to answer for (in a good way).

Fury Weekend is essentially Belarus-based Ars Nikonov and on this album he’s combined forces with a number of different artists working in the synthwave/alt-rock/electronica genre.  It all hangs together well.

If you like retro eighties sounds with the synth all powerful, great rhythms, and the occasional rock guitar, this is for you.  And before you hesitate, it’s actually very soulful and instantly likeable.

The opener ‘Delirious’, a former station power play, hooks you right in and could have been a Johnny Hates Jazz outtake.  It features label mates The Anix.

Hot on its heels is ‘Dangerous’ featuring PRIZM and a female vocal, very synth-wavey and very cool.

Next up ‘Soul Survivor’ (with synth-pop legend Ollie Wride) is funky with Prince-like undertones but a really good chorus too.

At times the album evokes some sub-Terminator soundtrack fused with Enigma (remember them?)  And there may be read across because Enigma’s Michael Cretu produced the German artist Sandra who is represented here with ‘Maria Magdalena’.  This time it’s interpreted by King Protea, with a synth-pop female vocal.  It has a rather appealing vibe.

There’s an indie vibe on ‘Sad Boy’ (featuring Nouveau Arcade) that brings to mind a lighter Depeche Mode whilst ‘Dancing Tonight’ (featuring Maxthor) reminds of Go West and that great vocalist Peter Cox.  ‘Velvet Rain’ is another powerful track, this time with the metal band Ravdina.

A couple of instrumentals are worthy too which gives Nikonov free rein, ‘Lady Cocktail’ and closer ‘Into The Utopia’ likely to appeal to fans of cult band The Midnight.

Mostly the album transcends the usual clichés that sometimes affect synth-pop music and synthwave in general.  This can be your new guilty pleasure.  The summer never sounded so good.  *****

Album review: DAVID EDWARD BOOTH – All My Days

david edward booth all my days

The Recording Booth [Release date 23.06.23]

Derbyshire born David Edward Booth is a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in rural Suffolk. David is also in-house producer and auxiliary writer/guitarist for The Knoydart Songwriting Retreat. He helped produce Kelly Bayfield’s ‘Wave Machine’ album (another fine album well worth your listening time), which was released earlier this year, and Kelly repays the favour by co-producing on this album, as well contributing vocals.

All of the songs are penned by David, ranging from the plaintive ‘Rainbows Of October’ through to the title track, a lovely piece of acoustic music featuring Kelly Bayfield’s vocals. It is an album of reflection, as ‘Another Me’ illustrates, with the album mixed and completed in the immediate weeks following the loss of his mother.

His background of playing in brass bands in his youth means that gentle brass feature on many of the songs. On ‘Blackbird’ this really adds an extra bit of magic, to a song already rich in the sounds of piano, cello and acoustic guitar. Not unlike Big Big Train’s sound a few years back.

With a vocal that is soothing on the ear, coupled with meaningful lyrics, David Edward Booth has produced a musically rich and highly enjoyable album. Those who enjoy the music of say Neil Finn and melodious acoustic songs will find much to enjoy on here. ***1/2

Gig review: CONNOR SELBY – Amazing Grace, London, 16 May 2023

Gig review: CONNOR SELBY – Amazing Grace, London, 16 May 2023A new venue for this intrepid reviewer, and one that he will want to return to soon. The Church of St Thomas, dating from the 18th Century now hosts a small auditorium with something of a cocktail bar, modern jazz club feel augmented by original ecclesiastical features and fittings, such as stained glass windows and a crown, unicorn and lion carving forming the impressive backdrop to the stage.

But enough of the architectural detail already. What of the music? The night kicked off with an entertaining half hour set from Logan J Parker. The Portuguese singer songwriter moved to London in 2015 and released her first EP in 2019. She brought stacks of colourful and confident stage presence and in delivering characterful vocals and rhythm guitar, eye-balled pretty much everyone in the room.

The songs were often preceded by stories of their inspiration, sometimes about hard-luck-in-love. She bristled with self-assurance, cool and soul.  The music and vocals combined in a catchy, hybrid beast reminiscent of Sheryl Crowe, a bit of Amy Winehouse and a dash of old Memphis blues.

Gig review: CONNOR SELBY – Amazing Grace, London, 16 May 2023

With a tight band behind her, tracks like ‘I Don’t Wanna Go’ and the single ‘Fragile’ cut through strongest. David Medland on trumpet, baggy hat and wraparound shades particularly caught the eye and ear, adding flourishes and flavour to so much of the material.

Encouraging stuff from a promising new talent who is part of Extinction Rebellion’s musical arm Music Declares Emergency.

I hadn’t seen Connor Selby since a brief set at Ramblin’ Man Fair back in 2018. He’s done pretty well for himself in the meantime, winning a string of UK Blues Awards and appearing on bills that also included The Who and Pearl Jam. He’s also had a haircut.

But if the look was sharper than our last encounter, the performance remained reassuringly laconic. ‘I Can’t Let You Go’ opened with his troubadour baritone swamped in Hammond organ and luxurious brass loops. His first guitar solo was clear, emotional and unfussy. Qualities that hallmarked his playing throughout the show.

‘Falling in Love Again’ followed quickly and brought a catchy, jazz-infusion. The band were already hitting their straps and the slow blues of ‘I Shouldn’t Care’ gave space to Jonny Henderson to fill the auditorium with his lush organ instrumental. The first of many. Henderson was amazing all night. ‘The Deep End’ was another jazz-influenced track that invited the band to shine.

Gig review: CONNOR SELBY – Amazing Grace, London, 16 May 2023

Alongside Selby and Henderson, Sonny B Winslow put in a rock solid shift on bass and Joe Anderton on second guitar brought some of his own delicious lead breaks to complement Selby’s immaculate work. Both clad in Blues Brothers shades, there was a lovely moment when Winslow had to slide his sunglasses down his nose so that he didn’t miss the time change cue from drummer Martin Johnson on ‘My Baby Don’t Dig Me’. Johnson kept everything tight and on track. He brought an intimate brush-drum feel to the stripped back ‘The Man I Ought To Be’, which worked so well in this warm venue.

Selby is demur on stage, respectful and polite to the audience without any showbiz indulgence. This suits the honest, open and almost melancholic blues-based songs he relates with such class. ‘My Baby Don’t Dig Me’ is a good  cover of an old Ray Charles song and maybe that’s a good benchmark for what Selby is about.

‘Hear My Prayer’ found a country vibe and ‘You Hurt Me’ was tender and painful, both lit up with searing solos from Selby. I’d been lucky enough to see both Kenny Wayne Shepperd and Joe Bonamassa in the last month. In terms of quality, Selby is right up there with them, though not yet breaking through to the big time. He comes in at the other end of the blues spectrum, bringing introspection and a hint of vulnerability that is not so obvious with the other two.

Gig review: CONNOR SELBY – Amazing Grace, London, 16 May 2023

‘How Blue Can You Get’ and the soulful ‘Show Me A Sign’ both featured extended solo passages from the band and there was a pretence at departing the stage before an encore, but they were back before they properly left. ‘Emily’ closed out the show. It was the rockiest, most immediate track in the set, with a bold chorus and it proved to be a fine way to end the evening.

The only way is up for Connor Selby and his band. They have a string or shows across the Summer. Definitely worth checking them out.

Gig review: WINGER – Bristol Academy, 21 May 2023

WINGER - Bristol Academy, 21 May 2023

Back in 2010 I reviewed Winger at Manchester Academy and took my son the guitarist Ben Randall.  Ben is a big fan of the band but I couldn’t entice him to see their latest tour supporting Steel Panther. Whether it’s a musician’s sixth sense, but I sort of see now where he was coming from.

On possibly the warmest day of the year so far, an audience packed in like sardines at a venue chain which witnessed a fatal crush outside Brixton Academy (and alleged overcrowding inside) and with jobsworth security (perhaps understandably paranoiac) it was not a memorable experience. Line of sight was bad and, most important of all, the sound mix was rubbish.

WINGER - Bristol Academy, 21 May 2023

Maybe the two year Covid gig interregnum has focused the mind too and we’ve become more critical.  To add insult to injury add in also the £9 clear air surcharge for driving in to Bristol city centre which seems to have more road works than roads…

I had this feeling that the pairing of retro renegades with the real thing was never going to go well.  Given that this was very much Steel Panther’s audience Winger were definitely constrained and constricted and the set list geared to the lowest common denominator.

The frustration was clearly evident in my recent interview with Kip Winger and any hope of extended band interplay or “deep cuts” was always going to be wishful thinking and very naive on my part.  Although pre-tour Kip was inviting audience requests via Instagram.

WINGER - Bristol Academy, 21 May 2023

Their 45 minute set majored on the key hair metal tracks and the high energy levels were sustained for most of the time only giving way to the more cerebral ‘Rainbow In The Rose’, ‘Miles Away’ (co-written by returning keyboard player Paul Taylor)  and ‘Headed For A Heartbreak’ the latter including a possibly unnecessary appearance from Michael Starr.

But of course the poor sound ruined the subtleties of Winger’s music. That’s quite alarming when you know Kip Winger’s sonic credentials. And a Reb Beach guitar solo spot, to be honest, is totally unnecessary when time is tight and with no time to build tension and drama. However let’s not be too rose-tinted, we only got an hour in 2010.

WINGER - Bristol Academy, 21 May 2023

At least we were spared a drum solo and career overview medley which they include in some of their sets.  In truth this crowd would have loved that but perhaps a clash with Steel Panther on this occasion who sometimes do a similar eighties mash-up.

You can’t help thinking that here you have a band that’s becoming almost a tribute to themselves whereas Steel Panther started out a tribute and then sought recognition in their own right.  And here’s another anomaly for hardened gig goers: why is it that a band is more concerned about getting a selfie for social media before hastily retreating from stage rather than a proper bowing out and audience adulation at the end of the gig?  And, yes, I’m being picky.

WINGER - Bristol Academy, 21 May 2023

On the back of a very strong new album, and a wonderful post-1990 back catalogue, it is criminal that the band are unable to tour in their own right.  And they have the original line-up plus John Roth who joined thirty years ago!  And, sound mix notwithstanding, they are still formidable musicians with Kip’s strong vocals (and bass playing) a particular highlight.

Winger last played a few dates in the UK in 2014 following their appearance at Download.  In our chat Kip Winger implied that at nearly 62 he will find touring a challenge going forward and of course he has his classical interests.  Let’s hope that he returns with the band before the end of another decade and give the hard-core fans what they really deserve. Promoters are you listening?  But maybe skip Bristol Academy.
