Album review: SCOTT MCKEON – New Morning

Scott McKeon chatted to Pete Feenstra about his album ‘New Morning’ for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 20 June 2021.

Scott McKeon - New Morning

Idaho Records [Release date 23.04.21]

‘New Morning’ is Scott McKeon’s first solo album for 11 years. He’s been busy with some high profile session work and this album is his creative attempt to re-establish his own musical profile.

It’s a ‘live in the studio’ guitar-driven album, full of deep grooves, cool dynamics, intricate riffs, plenty of spontaneity and an array of tones, all glued together by drummer Jeremy Stacey’s unrelenting energy.

There’s rock, blues, funk, electro and he’s never too far away from Jeff Beck’s mid 70’s fusion, albeit with updated tones.

And like Beck he’s stronger on playing and jamming than songwriting. With the exception of 4 tracks, this is mainly an instrumental album on which McKeon’s rhythmic dexterity, variety of solos and dirt sounding exploratory tones also reminds me of Doyle Bramhall 11.

He is unafraid to delve into the esoteric moments to shape his own rock-blues niche, while vocalist Gavin Conder’s 3 vocal  contributions – particularly on the intricate fractured funk of ‘Third Eye Witness’ – helps push the music in a more contemporary indie direction.

McKeon’s use of distorted tones evokes both JD Simo and Gary Clarke Jr. And it’s that exploratory feel that lies at the heart of an album that constantly searches for deep grooves, inspiration and the sort of magical moments to be found on ‘Everything Is Nothing’.

The latter is built on an infectious rhythm track and a Keith Richard style riff is subsumed by an ascending drone riff and Gavin Conder’s nasal vocal. The whole track flows naturally into McKeon’s fluid fuzz toned solo, locked in by the exhilarating rhythm section of Rocco Palladino and Jeremy Stacey.

It sounds as if the band had waited for this moment to simply let go, hit a sweet spot and tap into the subconscious.

‘Crossfader’ is a mix of late 60’s organ-led psychedelia, rhythmic wah-wah and chiming ethereal tones, as it imperceptibly evolves into a Latino groove with a perfunctory fade.

This album could have stolen the old Hawkwind ‘In Search of Space’ title, because at times McKeon tellingly takes his finger off the strings and lets the grooves bubble up organically.

This is no more so than on ‘Fego’ on which he teases out some expressive notes that drip with real feel.

‘Take Me Back’ has a similar sensibility with his note flurries being an object session in use of space, time and taste, while Gavin Condor adds just enough husk on his vocal to amplify its bluesy inflection.

The album as a whole moves from understatement to outright intensity and does so in the course of one song on the opening ‘Fight No More’.

There’s a palpable Hendrix and fusion feel, as McKeon’s ferocious echoed squalls and sonic arcs are tempered by a Mahavishnu chanted mantra.

The song bursts at the seams with a J.D. Simo like intensity, though the muddy mix sounds as if it saved the amps from exploding.

The jammed out title track enjoys a languid Hendrix slow build with a slight suggestion of The Beatles ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ and even a hint of Zappa with the use of vibes.

There’s a significant contrast between McKeon’s sumptuous slide playing and this growling lead solo. The latter fills the track with a post psyche bluesy feel and a Trower like distorted drone. It suddenly drops down from an enveloping wall of sounds via a Zeppelin ‘Dazed & Confused’ riff into melodic Hawaiian guitar outro.

‘New Morning’ lives up to its loose conceptual theme in as much as there are no real songs here. McKeon opts for loose limbed jams with fleeting emotive feels and occasional inspirational moments, as on the closing ‘Take Me Back’.

It’s an album that demands plenty of repeat plays to absorb all the stylistic shifts, layered sounds, an array of tonal colours and consistent intricate band interplay.

‘Zapruder’ is a good example of how the album explores different options, opening in retro cool fashion with Ross Stanley’s layered Hammond, Stacey’s subtle brushed stokes and McKeon’s clean picked jazzy notes.  It rises and falls either side of some riff driven bluster and a majestic ascending solo, before an awkward tempo change at 4.43 suggests impatience.

Ultimately you will either be drawn to that loose feel or the opposite. The fact that the band occasionally feels as if its approaching a precipice gives ‘New Morning’ its sense of freedom, adventure and excitement.

In musical terms it also means we can enjoy the journey as much as the destination itself.

‘New Morning’ offers much to the discerning rock fan, though outside of the guitar heads, Scott McKeon might have to wait just a little while longer for his profile to hit the mainstream.  ****

EP review: CROBOT – Rat Child

CROBOT - Rat Child

Mascot Records [Release date 18.06.21]

Crobot have announced their new record Rat Child EP, which features a mighty cast of pure rock pedigree. It’s a punchy taste of what is to come in the future – this is a collaborative EP which demonstrates the range and depth of the band and guests, whetting our appetites for more… I hope you guys have been busy writing during lockdown!

The band’s last album Motherbrain (2019) was a global hit – this EP is a collection of what didn’t make it on to the album for whatever reason, the band shares – “These Motherbrain leftovers (and new tunes alike), will satiate your tastebuds for some new Crobot riffage. We had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Frankie Bello (Anthrax), Howard Jones (Light the Torch), & Stix Zadina (Steel Panther), with whom we not only value friendship but idolize as well. Whether it’s gritty grooves, ballistic riffs, or that good ol’ Crobot sound you’re yearning for to getcha through, we’ve got just frequencies for ya! Say hello to our lil’ friends…”

In advance of the EP release, they have revealed the video for “Mountain” featuring Frank Bello. Brandon Yeagley “We’ve grown to know the Anthrax dudes pretty well through touring. We’ve always talked about writing with Frankie because we have a lot of the same influences and that definitely shines through in ‘Mountain.’ It was a treat to work with him on something.”

The recording “Everyone Dies” was co-written by Steel Panther’s Stix Zadina, who performs piano, drums and bass on the track. Yeagley states, “One of the last tours we did was supporting Steel Panther. We hit it off with all of the guys. Stix even got tattooed by Bishop! We kept in touch and he sent us a bunch of ideas he had for songs. We really gravitated towards this piano instrumental he had called ‘Jimmy’s Piano Song.’ We don’t know Jimmy, but Stix must really love that dude…cause that shit brought tears to our eyes. Through a couple of Zoom sessions, we were able to work everything out and that’s how we wrote ‘Everyone Dies.’ We really wanted to venture somewhere different with this one but still pump it full of our personality. This is our attempt to sit at the dinner table with Queen whilst eating a healthy portion of Meatloaf.” This is my favourite track of the EP – but all of the songs are absolute class, this is like a fabulous dessert finishing a fine meal!

In reference to the collaboration with Howard Jones, whom they met through mutual friends, Yeagley says, “We have always been huge fans of his melodic footprint and his unique melodies. When we heard he would be interested in writing with us, we were beyond excited. He flew down to Austin and spent a few days in a studio with us. We had a such great chemistry with him and wrote ‘Kiss it Goodbye.’ It seemed like such a travesty to let such a great song sit on the shelf. So, we’re pumped to let the world hear it!”

I hope this is a teaser for what is to come and indeed, more collaborations, much as I’d prefer to see bands on the road and be able to freely enjoy live music, Covid-19 has certainly stirred the creative juices and the music that is being produced as a result is a class above – every cloud as they say…. *****

Album review: GYPSY PISTOLEROS – The Mescalito Vampires

GYPSY PISTOLEROS – The Mescalito Vampires

Off Yer Rocka Records [Release date 14.08.21]

Gypsy Pistoleros are back and in better shape than ever. The line-up consists of vocalist/guitarist Gypsy Lee Pistolero, guitarist Mark Westwood  (Shadowland, Clive Nolan), on double bass Gaz Le Bass (The Delray Rockets), drummer Jan Vincent Vellazco (Pendragon, PIG) and on trumpet Kris Jones. Quite a prog rock pedigree in amongst the band’s line-up, however, that is one style of music you won’t hear on this album.

The Latino rock meets punk action comes thick in the form of ‘Lost In A Town Called Nowhere’, ‘Viva La Revolution’ and ‘Soho Daze, Just Another Friday Night’. The latter has a nice Guns ‘n’ Roses vibe to it.

It is not all breakneck paced though as the ballad ‘The Name’s Django’ shows the Gypsy Pistoleros have a few tricks up their sleeve. Starting off as a gentle ballad, complete with gentle guitar before midway through it goes fast paced, no holds barred Latino punk, then ending as quietly as it began.

Songs like ‘Cisco Kid’ and ‘Gonna Die With A Gun In My Hand’ have the listener imagining Wild West shoot outs or gunfighter duels in the hot sun at midday. These songs would be perfect for any Tarantino Western soundtrack.

What’s that? How would an Eagles classic sound making the basis of a Gypsy Pistoleros song? “’he Mescalito Vampires (Welcome To The Hotel De La Muerto)’ does just that. Taking a little bit of ‘Hotel California’, a lot of punk and Latino rock, helps to make on the album’s many highlights.

The album ends with a superb cover of the Love classic ‘Alone Again Or’. The acoustic guitar on this is stunning, as is indeed the band’s take on the song, going for a mellow vibe which works really well.

Imagine the house band from ‘From Dusk Til Dawn’ jamming with (early era) ZZ Top, a youthful Guns ‘N’ Roses and the Gypsy Kings and you get the Gypsy Pistoleros. Latino fuelled punk rock doesn’t get much better than this. ****

Album review: TERRA ODIUM – Ne Plus Ultra

Frontiers Records [Release date 11.06.21]

In its more expansive moments, Norwegian band Terra Odium’s album resonates with the sci-fi dissonance of tech metal. The kind that Brad Fiedel and Wendy Carlos wielded on “The Terminator” and “The Shining” film scores.

Most of the time though, the band focus on tight groupings of laser guided prog metal. A bit like Dream Theater or Transatlantic or perhaps Pagans Mind.

It’s densely constructed material, with guitars constantly swirling overhead or shredding right in your face. Every track is a pocket progrock symphony on this closely packed, unselfconscious slice of art rock – ‘Crawling’, ‘Winter’ and the poetic ‘The Clouded Morning’ in particular stand out initially. In true Progrock tradition, all 3 extend to a satisfying 7 minutes or more.

Elsewhere in the album, lyrical and musical ideas follow each other in a succession of set piece, timeline jumpcuts, unified by a common thread. ‘The Road Not Taken’ and ‘The Shadow Lung’ are amazingly intense pieces of music that keep breaking off into overture and back again. Powerful stuff.

This band has a bright future, no question. ****

Album review: BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER – S/T

Frontiers Records [Release date 11.06.21]

Frontiers clearly think highly of Brother Against Brother. The label compares this recording by two vocalists, Renan (Electric Mob) Zonta and Nando (Sinistra) Fernandes, relatively unknown outside of their native Brazil, to the Allen/Lande project. That’s off the mark by some distance.

This debut album is produced and written by the label’s inhouse man, Alessandro DelVecchio, who has allowed some decent tunes and choruses to be swamped by the duo’s chest beating histrionics, in almost all circumstances.

His own turgid over-production hasn’t helped. At times you’re thinking the vocalists’ OTT delivery is an attempt to pull away from the production’s suffocating gravitational pull. Only ‘What If’, ‘City Of Gold’ and ‘In The Name Of Life’ survive intact. And maybe ‘Deadly Sins’. These four are well crafted, journeyman rock/metal songs, with the occasional flicker of a welcome similarity to renowned rock band, Fair Warning.

In particular, ‘In The Name Of Life’ is notable for its semi-acoustic approach. The other three are held up by some decent bridges and choruses, and are strong enough to withstand a vocal pounding.

Otherwise, it might well be back to the recording studio equivalent of the drawing board. **

Album review: IAN McNABB – Utopian

IAN McNABB - Utopian

www.ianmcnabb.com [Release date 05.03.21]

Utopian is the final part of a trilogy Ian McNabb began with ‘Star Smile Strong’ (2017), and continued with ‘Our Future In Space’ (2018).

Recording took on a very different approach during 2020’s global pandemic, with many of the tracks initially being laid down in Ian’s home studio ‘Nabby Road’. When restrictions permitted (briefly) during last summer, the album was properly recorded at Parr Street studios, Liverpool; with mixing and mastering then being affected again by further lockdowns.

Despite all of these potential obstacles we now have this double album to enjoy. As it is a double album it takes a few plays for the full effect of the music and songs to sink in, which in itself is no bad thing. There are no fillers on here either, as you can hear each song has been lovingly crafted and recording.

Highlights come thick and fast, with the opener ‘Boy’ quite possibly one of the best songs Ian McNabb has recorded to date. The song sees him in the present day giving advice to his younger self and/or a musician starting out. It has it all, from the sumptuous musical backing through to the lyrics and vocal performance. Songs like this are why me and countless others love listening to music, a truly emotional experience on this one.

‘Harry Dean Stanton’ is almost a spoken word tribute to an actor and performer who you may not know the name, but you will recognise his face from the many films and TV shows he has appeared in. He worked right up until his death aged 91 in 2017.

It is the musical variety on ‘Utopian’ that makes it another ‘must have’. Be it the 70’s West Coast feel on ‘Mesmerised’, the hard edged rocking on ‘Deserter’ (recalling his excellent ‘Head Like A Rock’ album), the reflective ‘Great Spirit’, or the gentle, piano led ‘The Old Grey Lady’.

‘We’re Never Gonna To Grow Up’ is an excellent refrain to live by! A proper floor filler, with a funky beat and sax break solo from Bobby Bilsborough. On this, and indeed throughout the album, Ian McNabb shows he is no slouch as a guitarist either. Plenty of seemingly effortless solos only help to enrich the listening experience of the album.

‘Jivin’ Miss Daisy’ is another one to get the old dancing shows out for. Rock ‘n’ rolling and jiving its way into your consciousness, what a tune!

Double albums often see artists come unstuck with either a lack of decent songs to fill four sides/two discs, or indulging too much at melody’s expense. No need to worry on ‘Utopian’ as Ian McNabb shows no sign of dropping his high quality control on his songs. Fans will love this and if you have yet to enjoy the musical world of Mr McNabb here is a perfect opportunity to do so.

An album of the year with ease. ****1/2

Album review: NERGARD – Eternal White

Pride & Joy Music [release date 21.04.21]

Norwegian musician/songwriter/producer, Andreas Nergard creates symphonic experiences which enthrall audiences. The fact that he uses “Metal” as his chosen vehicle is almost incidental. You could add that the fact he uses voices is almost incidental too.

This is his third full studio album, this time with a settled line up, which includes one female and two male vocalists.
Eternal White tells the harrowing story of the 18th century Carolean Death March, when 3000 Swedish and Finish soldiers froze to death after an abortive attempt to invade neighbouring Norway. So, it’s clearly not a happy tale, but one that is ripe for dramatisation. These tragedies live long in the memory of nations.

Nergard goes about his business with a quiet, religious intensity, marrying conventional instrumentation – guitars, bass, drums – to strings, brass and woodwinds. His real skill is in matching the music with the dramatic events portrayed in the story, and sometimes vice versa. So much so that the mildly militaristic ‘Pride Of The North’ would work well even without the narrative. The operatic choral sounds do the heavy lifting, not the words. And in places, it’s the music telling us the story, not the lyrics.
That said, ‘From The Cradle To The Grave’, a song about loyalty, has a fabulously melodic chorus, urged on by spine tingling orchestration. It’s a majestic piece of music…one of the album’s defining moments, where even the soloing axework sounds regal, earnest, and eminently tuneful.

‘Carry Me’, sung by Stefani Keogh, is an exception to the prevailing style. An emotional piece of pop/rock/metal with a spiritual message. With Keogh going from restrained to all in and back again. It gives the album the transition it needs at this point.
Then ‘Beneath Northern Skies’ collapses both musical styles – Symphonic rock and Pop metal – into one exciting piece of music. These variations might be a little unsettling for the single perspective metal fan, you don’t know what’s going to happen next. But that’s the point when you’re telling a story. Keep your audience on the edge of its seat.

With the right support, Nergard could make a genuine piece of theatre, literally, out of this album, not just a live performance. Roll on. ****

Album review: MICK PAUL – Parallel Lives

MICK PAUL - Parallel Lives

[Release date  09.06.21] www.mickpaulbassist.com

David Cross (ex-King Crimson) collaborator Mick Paul is a bassist/guitarist and ‘Parallel Lives’ is characterised by his bubbling bass and Sheila Maloney’s excellent keyboard textures and arrangements.

Craig Bundell (Steven Wilson)  lends his drums including on ‘Light Of Silence’ whilst Cross supplies violin to ‘No Horizon’.  And to complete the prog celeb triumvirate David Jackson (Van Der Graaf Generator)  provides flutes and whistles on the, er, flighty ‘Swallows’.

There’s a real consistency to the album and the best tracks appear at the end of the CD version, notably ‘Name On You’, ‘Consigned To Reality’ and ‘Morning Skyline’.

At times, this album reminded me of the sort of thing Jakko M. Jaksyk might put out, especially with Jinian Wilde’s vocal inflections.  The vocalizations also bring to mind Steve Hackett in places and the overall vibe not dissimilar to that guitarist’s work with Djabe.  Jazzy prog if you will.  ****

Album review: LAURA MEADE – The Most Dangerous Woman In America

LAURA MEADE - The Most Dangerous Woman In America

Doone Records [Release date 21.05.21] www.laurameademusic.com

Reviewing Laura Meade’s previous album – ‘Remedium’ -  GRTR! scribe Pete Whalley’s enthusiasm was such that he was quoted in despatches in a full page print media advertisement.  Vocalist in New York based prog rockers Izz, this is Meade’s second offering this time co-written with band member John Golgano.

Readers will want to know more about the imposing album title: it doesn’t refer to Meade but it’s the longest track on the album and – like the album concept – a tribute to those “whose stories remain untold, whose lives have been neutralized by those with unchecked power”.

As with the 2018 solo debut this album is quirky prog and allows Meade to be more expansive outside the confines of her usual band where she shares vocal duties (most of the band feature here as back-up).   But again, as with ‘Remedium’, the album reveals a great voice and strong melodies.

Standout tracks like ‘Leaving’ and ‘Burned At The Stake’ are fused by electronica and bring to mind a latter-day Kate Bush.  And, a bonus for a “concept” album, all these tracks can be enjoyed in their own right, with songs like ‘End Of The Road In Hollywood’ and ‘Doesn’t Change A Thing’ highly accessible and compulsive.

Those who like female fronted prog/neo-prog, such as the UK band Magenta, will find something of interest here.  Overall, the main vibe harks back to eighties synth rock and whilst Izz fans will find this a musical diversion it is nevertheless a journey that should be taken.  ****1/2

Album review: SILENT RAGE – Shattered Hearts and Don’t Touch Me There (Remasters)

Rock Candy Records [release date 07.05.21]

US rock band, Silent Rage’s worldwide hit song, ‘Don’t Touch Me There’ (1989) gained them considerable notoriety. Perhaps a surprise then that once you peel away the risque lyrics, you reveal a band of considerable talent.
It was the second of two releases now reissued in remastered form by Brit label, Rock Candy Records.

The band was formed by guitarists/ songwriters, Mark Hawkins and Jesse Damon. Paul Sabu produced their debut album, Shattered Hearts, in 1987.

It’s an album is very much of its time, highly derivative. There was a formula, strictly adhered to by the mid range practicioners of Melodic Rock like King Kobra, Giuffria and Black’n'Blue. Silent Rage had all the pieces – shout-it-out choruses; ringing guitars; a bright, brash studio production; tales of lust, love and heartache, and loads of studio polish. On most tracks here, they just can’t get them to fit. And too often decent melodies and choruses are spoiled by cliched lyrics.

The title track,’Shattered Hearts’ and ‘Make It Or Break It’ may reveal some surprisingly grown up observations on life and love, and the teasingly poptastic ‘Sarina’ might reach out confidently to MTV and FM radio. But elsewhere and too often the formula they are seeking to emulate is out of range.

Don’t Touch Me There (1989) changed all that.
We can immediately see that their songwriting skills and individual talents have blossomed in the two years since Shattered Hearts. They were now on Gene (Kiss) Simmons’ label, and he had a hand in the production.

The album was hugely popular in the UK and Europe generally, hitting the top spot on the import charts for several weeks. No surprise. ‘Runnin On Love’, ‘Rebel With A Cause’ and the title track, amongst others, were all switched on melodic rock nuggets, in tune with the times and imbued with honest conviction.
Their covers of the Isley Brothers’ ‘Touch Me’, and ‘All Night Long’, originally written by Curtis Lewis for Aretha Franklin, showed a willingness to stretch out into other forms of rock and soul (not to mention good taste).

The remastering is extremely well done, protecting the integrity of the original dynamics while creating an improved clarity of sound.

No bonus tracks though…shame.

Book review: On track…Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex (Every album, every song) by Peter Gallagher

On track...Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex (Every album, every song) by Peter Gallagher

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 11.06.21]

By the time of his untimely death in 1977 Marc Bolan was still releasing singles, although the big hits of earlier this decade were behind him, he had his own successful TV show and more then that he had become an influence on at least the next two decades of British popular music.

In “Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex- every album, every song” we get to look at the official releases in Bolan’s lifetime, from the early solo singles, the Tyrannosaurus Rex years and the hugely popular T.Rex era. Peter Gallagher has done a great job here of guiding us through the recording career of this extraordinary musical legend, one that is clearly close to his heart.

The in-depth examination of the songs is one that fans will love, and one that may cause the reader to challenge their own interpretations of these songs. The casual reader may, like myself, now suddenly find that they have a new Bolan playlist that varies from the previously released hits compilations.

Books like “Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex- every album, every song” are a way to revisit the music of the subject, or can serve as a pointer to new fans, or can simply be a nostalgic run through a band that you love, and this book ably covers all three.  ***

Album review: STEPHEN FOSTER & HOWLER – Southern

Stephen Foster & Howler - Southern

Thoroughbred Music [Release date 21.04.21]

With a career spanning Americana, r&b, blues, rock, country, zydeco, gospel, folk and even electronica, Stephen Foster has plenty of scope to dive into his southern roots for an album full of swampy grooves, strong narratives, potent hooks and a lived in vocal style that reflects over 50 years of absorbing every facet that southern roots music offers him.

A former studio musician who learnt his chops in Muscle Shoals with the likes of Percy Sledge, a fledgling Lynyrd Skynyrd and the great Wayne Perkins, ‘Southern’ is a conceptually titled album, with a good cross section of Americana.

Better still, the story lines are shot though with integrity and are voiced by an artist who you suspect has lived some of the narratives he sings, while making a living playing the music he loves.

And if the album doesn’t always quite flow as you might imagine, that probably has something to do with the fact that it comprises 6 new and 6 older songs.

On the upside, the emphasis is always on the song rather than the playing, but some inconsistent production values robs Foster of a signature sound.

At times ‘Southern’ sounds less than a coherent journey and more like an aggregation of loosely related songs. Perhaps it’s the price a fiercely independent artist has to pay for sticking to handmade music.

‘Cathead Blues’ for example, has a Roy Buchanan style vocal, but doesn’t deliver a requisite guitar tone to match the down-in-the-alley imagery. Tommy Miles’s ‘Biloxi’ too, has a lovely New Orleans feel with echoes of Little Feat, but again a muddy mix and a thin guitar line is only rescued by the gospel style vocals.

The sparse production approach works much better on the country tinged ‘Too Late’, which puts the focus on Foster’s gentle wistful voice and bv’s, making it a song with commercial potential.

He actually opens the album in a much tougher vein. ‘Can’t Take Me Home’ is muscular southern rock homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s late vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt, on which Foster’s soulful vocal teases out the dark irony of his own narrative ability.

He overcomes some harsh buzz tone guitar on the tub thumping ‘When You Love Somebody, as a warm vocal and a clever use of dynamics in a mid number drop-down pulls it back into the groove.

Foster adds a brusque timbre to evoke Albert Cummings on ‘Tied Up In The Blues’. It’s built round a powerful hook and neatly offset by some tremulous slide.

In fact, he saves his best production for the closing zydeco and hony-tonk tinged bookend ‘One More Link in the Chain’, with a gospel style call and response on a chanted hook.

‘Southern’ does enjoy a timeless feel, mainly because each stylistic diversion brings a new colour to the musical palette, while his lyrics have a lived in authenticity.

‘Little Things’ for example’, is all about the minutiae of his observational abilities as a songwriter, on a mixed back slide riff with southern tinged imagery: “Little things, bits and piece and memories.”

He reveals more about his Southern musical antecedents as the album evolves. The J.J. Cale influenced ‘Can’t Go Home’ is a signature exercise in simplicity on which he serves the song well with an additional light gospel influence.

He further emulates J.J. Cale’s swampy feel on an older track ‘Arkansas’. It’s not too far removed from the swampy influenced and straight to the vein hook of ‘Rock My World’, on which he cleverly uses a contrasting whispered vocal with a brighter percussive feel.

When it comes down to it, this album is all about equilibrium. ‘Southern’ is a slow burning album with catchy hooks and takes it’s time to fully sparkle via some layered sounds and Foster’s weathered vocals.

In short, you can’t rush thoughtful Americana anchored by deep grooves and given its character by colourful narratives. ‘Southern’ has plenty of both and is worth persevering with ***½

Gig review: PAPA GEORGE AND VAL COWELL- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 28 May 2021

PAPA GEORGE AND VAL COWELL- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 28 May 2021

A return to normality for gigging is a long way off, just witness the continuing cancellation or postponements of shows into 2022. However at least lockdown has lifted enough for a few socially distanced shows to resume. Last autumn I witnessed a couple of them at the Cabbage Patch, staged by the stalwart Eel Pie Club, and was due to attend a third with these two respected local musicians.  Three postponements and seven months later, it was a relief that it finally took place.

Papa George, the genial London bluesman with the Greek-Cypriot heritage, has been a regular on the local gig scene in and around South-West London ever since I moved here 30 years ago, and probably longer.  The singer and guitarist’s afternoon acoustic sessions alongside Micky Moody at the Red Lion in Isleworth for many years are the stuff of local legend.

PAPA GEORGE AND VAL COWELL- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 28 May 2021

Val Cowell has been treading the boards for just as long with Bad Influence – inspired by the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Janis Joplin, her powerful bluesy singing even (if I recall) attracted attention from Raw magazine back in the day. While the big time never beckoned they have been reliable live performers and even featured on Radio 2.

So it was perhaps surprising that, given they inhabit a similar musical and geographical orbit, the two have only joined forces relatively recently.

PAPA GEORGE AND VAL COWELL- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 28 May 2021

The format was consistent – the two generally alternated lead vocals from one song to the next, though Val also added harmony vocals to George’s. They both played electric Fenders, and George’s lead playing was a revelation to one weaned on his acoustic shows- with a heavier edge and even an aggressive, ragged feel at times.

His ‘Blackjack’ has long been a staple of his live set while that richly warm and comforting voice enlivened ‘Cleansing My Soul’  and the gospel-tinged ‘Sun Gonna Shine’. He played a few numbers from recent album ‘These Wheels’, and both ‘Roll With You’ and main set closer ‘Heading South’ chugged away in satisfyingly rocking fashion.

PAPA GEORGE AND VAL COWELL- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 28 May 2021

However the majority of songs in the set were choice blues and rock covers, starting with Val singing Keb Mo’s ‘I’m On Your Side’. Her Bonnie Raitt influence shone through as she covered ‘Love Me Like a Man’ and her version of ‘Runaway’, and she put her own stamp on Randy Newman’s ‘Guilty’ very effectively. More mainstream stuff  included the Stones ‘Dead Flowers’ and a pair of ‘pre-mechanical’ ZZ Top, as Val called them, in ‘I Thank You’ and Jesus Just Left Chicago’.

They interpreted a number of old standards  including the old spiritual ‘Wade in the Water’ and ‘Baby What You Want Me to Do’ (which I always associate with Wishbone Ash but my partner was quick to recognise as an Elvis staple!”) However ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ as recently popularised  by Chris Stapleton had every member of our party separately wondering if this wasn’t ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ with different lyrics?

PAPA GEORGE AND VAL COWELL- Cabbage Patch, Twickenham, 28 May 2021

Ending with a very suitably chosen encore in ‘Pride and Joy’, this was an excellent if sedate evening of rocking blues to provide a memory to savour while the gig scene, including further Eel Pie shows, slowly returns to normal. The two worked together so beautifully that the only question is, what took them so long?

EP review : RHAPSODY OF FIRE – I’ll Be Your Hero

AFM Records [Release date 04.06.21]

There’s no band more adept at sucking us into their fantasy world of bombastic, exhuberant Metal than Champions League Melodic Metal band, Rhapsody Of Fire.

This is one of those rarities we call an EP. An Extended Play. Longer than a “single”, shorter than an “LP”. A potboiler. A Marketing ploy to keep our interest alive.
And it works.

It centres on the title track ‘I’ll Be Your Hero’, a familiar phrase in Metal’s world of inflated sentiments. Indeed the song is imbued with a sense of heroism and escape, a romanticised epic, structured on a speeding riff, a rushing keyboard motif, a sinuous melody and, well… you have to say this about RoF, they don’t overdo it. They get it just right.

The instruments and the arrangements create an aural landscape to help us understand what is going on in the narrative. It’s a joy to listen to. If ever bombastic metal could be described as elegant and restrained, this is it.

The “re-recorded” version of ‘Where Dragons Fly’ emphasises this approach. A Metal madrigal for lovers of the theatrical. It’s a bit twee at times, but mostly it’s simply sweet where it could easily have given in to saccharin.

A couple of live tracks, ‘Rain Of Fury’ and ‘The Courage To Forgive’, from the band’s 2019 ‘Eighth Mountain’ tour are timely reminders that they can do all this on stage without missing a beat. And if nothing else, four different language versions of ‘The Wind, The Rain and The Moon’ confirm the band’s popularity across Europe.***1/2

Album review: ROB KORAL – Wild Hearts

Pete Feenstra chatted to Rob Koral for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio playing tracks from the album ‘Wild Hearts’.  First broadcast 13 June 2021.

Rob Koral - Wild Hearts

RKUK [Release date 28.05.21]

Rob Koral’s ‘Wild Hearts’ is an exhilarating instrumental album comprising guitar, Hammond organ and drums.

The Blue Commotion guitarist leads an old school ‘live in the studio’ affair. Recorded under lockdown conditions, it’s forged by improvisation and shaped by real feel, as it explores elements of rock, blues, jazz, fusion and funk.

It’s an exciting combination that fully justifies the album title in the sense of capturing the trio’s unfettered intensity.

It’s not quite a free form project – the music is too concise for that – but with the exception of a few loose themes,  the trio started with a blank canvas and 6 hours to record an album from the bottom upwards.

It helps of course that Rob could rely on his long time Blue Commotion Hammond player Pete Whittaker, to provide a percussive presence with his earthy Hammond and left hand bass lines.

The trio is anchored by current King Crimson drummer Jeremy Stacey, who mixes relentless drive with subtlety to glue together the creative spark and feel to be found in all 8 tracks here.

And though this is a Rob Koral solo album, he’s self evidently a team player who always gives himself to the groove, and whose melodic phrasing and occasional brusque riffling is constantly open to different ideas and styles,  sometimes in the same song.

He’s a fluid player who approaches his tones in the manner a painter might add pressure to a brush stroke, or explore a contrasting lightness of touch.

The opening ‘Show Me The Way’ features tension building organ and guitar double lines as part of a sparse arrangement. Koral adds some spiky wah-wah and rhythmic comping, Whittaker the sudden tempo change, a cool walking bass figure and full blow Hammond solo, and Stacey the propulsion on a great example of the parts supporting the greater whole.

And while the trio revels in its improvisational freedom, Koral’s ability to explore different musical styles gives the album it’s linear progression and flow.

His knows when to seize the moment, as evidenced by ‘Summer’ an extended piece which leads him to inhabit what Ralph Towner called a “reverent musical space.”

On paper ‘Wild Hearts’ is an exercise in simplicity, to just plug in and play and see what happens, but the grooves soon bubble up and envelop us, while the musical empathy in the room gives the album its different colours and visceral quality.

The album’s ebb and flow comes from the band members giving each other plenty of space and seizing the initiative when the moment demands it. This is no more so than on the extended anchor track ‘Summer’.

It’s an eloquent celebration of what the trio does so well, as it moves from a percussive opening with Koral’s chops evoking Pat Metheny’s fluency, into a tougher and more concise attack with shades of a Larry Carlton’s tone, albeit with tension building squalls.

It evolves into a 70’s West Coast feel with echoes of a Grateful Dead jam. Then there the feel of the John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana version of ‘Love Supreme’, as Stacey’s relentless drive pushes Koral back to McLaughlin style intensity.

The band leader then employs a gnawing riff driven intro and growling tone on the muscular ‘Take Me’. This contrasts sharply with the more sonorous ‘Saving Grace’, which features a twice repeated, reflective Jan Akkerman era Focus theme.

Whittaker’s adds a Peddlers style organ break and shares some exquisite interplay with Stacey. It all flows seamlessly into a melodic break from Koral and some belated Zappa, ‘Chunga’s Revenge’ era wah wah over some fabulous stick work from Stacey, as they head into the gentlest of fades.

And having explored jazz, fusion, funk – check out the clean toned phrasing, Hammond solo break and nimble stick work on ‘Funky D’ –  there’s also the Jimmy Smith jump bluesy inflection of ‘The Show Down’.

It’s something of a shock then to find Koral evoking Paul Kossoff with a gutsy tone and real intensity on ‘The Beyond’.

It’s neatly juxtaposed by the aptly titled ‘Hold Tight’, an exhilarating, rip-roaring finale on which Koral’s final notes resonate alongside judicious Hammond work.

If the biggest challenge facing an instrumental album is to draw the listener into something fresh and original and then keep them there with stylistic diversity, strong melodies and some supreme jamming, then ‘Wild Hearts’ ticks all the right boxes.

‘Wild Hearts’ rocks hard – listen to the way the band takes off like a jet plane in the middle of ‘Hold Tight’ – and explores both intensity and feel, while offering plenty of variety in both its material and Koral’s guitar playing.

Paul Stacey’s pristine mix imbues the music with a pristine sonic presence, worthy of an instrumental album played with real passion and an outstanding collective musical ability. ****½

Book review: Alice Cooper in the 1970’s by Chris Sutton

Alice Cooper in the 1970’s by Chris Sutton

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 28.03.21]

There is no denying that the1970’s was the decade that the Alice Cooper band went from virtual nobodies to household names, but it was also a decade of massive upheaval for the band as front man Alice Cooper took his name with him and went solo. In “Alice Cooper in the 1970’s” Chris Sutton takes us on an in depth look at the band, and solo act, that is Alice Cooper throughout that pivotal decade.

Forward a few decades and imagine if you will an Alice Cooper show today. The setlist will be familiar to even the most casual of fans and will be primarily written around those massive hits that were enjoyed by the original band back in the 1970’s.

Think of the likes of “Elected”, “Billion Dollar Babies”, “No More Mr Nice Guy”, “School’s Out”, the list could go on and on. There is no doubt that the foundations of the massively successful career of Alice Cooper as a solo artist can be found in the era covered in this book as we look at the band, the albums, the sidemen and the support network, it’s all in these pages.

Whether it be from new interviews, archive material or even the authors own recollections as a fan, the stories add colour to the story.

An enjoyable, and informative, read “Alice Cooper in the 1970’s” is available now. ****

Single review: EVOLUTION ROAD – Gold Digger

Doug Bryan’s collective concept ‘Evolution Road’ have released their first single “Gold Digger” and it seriously deserves some air play!

I chatted to Doug about the collective concept, rather than a band, there’s much talent packed into this line up for  “Gold Digger” and it will be an open door concept depending on other work commitments and who wants to get involved.

What’s next, well the plan is to keep on releasing singles and build up to an album release, adapting to how people tend to listen to music these days, with playlists.

You might think that’s a familiar story, another track about a “Gold Digger”, but that is not the point, this is a song to empower anyone who has been in this situation and it’s one most if not all, of us can relate to.

During our chat, Doug makes it clear that his song writing has to be meaningful, it needs to be relatable and that this song is personal to him and his past, and I know he’s far from alone.

“It’s about when you realize you are the one being taken advantage of be it physically, emotionally, financially, name it, that when you are at your lowest point you dig down deep into your innermost depts of your soul, you look in the mirror and you say to yourself “NO MORE!”  And at that moment you learn that you need to love and value yourself and you need to get strong from the inside out. So you turn the tables on that person and you hit them back by beating them at their own game. And when you come out on top you will never ever allow that to be done to you again.  It’s a song of self-empowerment.”

This single is awesome, the collective sound like they have been together forever and it’s tight, long may it continue! “We came out of the gate with the bar set incredibly high.” I agree – can’t wait to hear what is next but for right now – as the man says “just push play and turn it up!”

Review & interview by Karen Clayton

Doug Bryan on guitar

Andrew Freeman (Last In Line, Offspring) on Vocals

Jorgen Carlson (Gov’t Mule) on Bass

Album review: MIDNITE CITY – Itch You Can’t Scratch

MIDNITE CITY - Itch You Can't Scratch

Roulette Media [Release date 11.06.21]

Since bursting out onto the scene in 2017, Midnite City have been steadily building up a loyal following, helped by two well received albums and being a band that doesn’t mind getting on the road to perform (pandemic allowing).

Midnite City return with album number three on a new label Roulette Media, as well as new management and booking agent. However, the band’s line-up remains the same – Rob Wylde (vocals), Miles Meakins (guitar), Shawn Charvette (keyboards), Josh ‘Tabbie’ Williams (bass) and Pete Newdeck (drums). All of the band contribute to backing vocals which really helps make the choruses stand out, as well as providing the band part of its own unique sound.

Midnite City start this album off with a bang in the shape of ‘Crawlin’ In The Dirt’. A fiesty rocker, complete with a tasty keyboard riff. The sort of tune Steel Panther would have done back when they wrote memorable tunes (less the innuendo!). ‘Atomic’ keeps the pace moving along nicely, a touch of Def Leppard on the chorus.

‘Fire Inside’ is one of those guitar/keys led melodic hard rockers we all love, complete with a memorable chorus. It is sure to become a live favourite and is certainly an album highlight for this reviewer. ‘They Only Come Out At Night’ is another treat for melodic rock fans.

The power ballad ‘If It’s Over’ is a bit tasty too. A cross between Bon Jovi and Firehouse when both bands were in their prime.

Despite having hints of other bands in their sound Midnite City have their own identifiable sound, which helps with the band being just that and not a studio project where often the songs can be an afterthought.

Midnite City do mix it up a little on here too, as ‘Blame It On Your Lovin’ is one of their heaviest songs to date, complete with horns that sit neatly on the top of the guitars.

After a pretty pants 2020 and not the greatest of starts to 2021, we need a little bit of party metal in our lives and Midnite City step up to the plate. Party on! ****

Album review: ALIAS8 – Digital Sound Cinema

ALIAS8 - Digital Sound Cinema

Facebook [Release date 18.06.21]

There was a real bloom of interest in ‘chill-out’ music a number of years ago and countless compilations came out, all guaranteeing to soothe your senses. Of course, what could have been classed in the same way has been around for a long time, gentle classical music so achingly beautiful and serene as to tame the wildest of beasts. Even more recently, artists like Brian Eno have been producing instrumental pieces that are a balm to counteract the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

Truthfully, a lot of the more recent output in this field has seemingly been nothing more than mass produced aural wallpaper but some releases just demand to be listened to properly as they wrap you in their warm sonic embrace. This new album by Alias8 is one such work, the craftmanship so sublime as to demand to be heard in headphones, simultaneously being carried away by its grace and engaged in the storytelling.

Capturing a very modern feel, ‘Digital Sound Cinema’ mixes electronica with more pastoral sounds, painting landscapes with a kaleidoscope of colours. From the trippy ‘Light in the Box’ through to the warmth and gentle light of the subtle and aptly titled ‘Luminous’ here is something that isn’t just a wash of New Age sounds, but harkens to the style of modern masters of European Cinema, packed with elan and a breathless cool but also full of warmth.

With some sublime guest vocals from Jade Ward from Cambridge folk masters The Willows on the gorgeous ‘Reflected’ adding to the sonic delights and the evocative and atmospheric ‘Café By The Sea’ to name just two, it’s an album whose many chapters take you on a journey that will be one you come back to time and time again. *****

Album review: FRANKIE MILLER – Once In A Blue Moon, High Life and The Rock (remasters with bonus tracks)

Rock Candy Records [release date 7.05.21]

Glasgow singer/songwriter/actor, Frankie Miller always seemed to have more success when other people sang the stuff he had written. And no matter the critical acclaim his own releases enjoyed, reviews always seemed to end with “…but the album was not a commercial success”.

Enterprising UK label, Rock Candy Records, now give us a remastered opportunity to re-appraise Miller’s first 3 albums, orginally released in the seventies, adorned with bonus tracks.

Once In A Blue Moon‘s main claim to fame was the song ‘I Can’t Change It’, written by Miller when he was just a boy, later recorded by one of his musical heroes, Ray Charles.

Public interest was limited. The UK music scene was just getting out from under the dominance of psychedelia, reggae and folk rock. No real market had yet been established for soulful, grainy blues rock. And this album is all of that, in spades.

There is nothing calculated about Miller’s songs. They come from the heart, they come from his roots. Many of them take their time – like ‘It’s All Over’ and ‘In No Resistance’ – but don’t waste any time. ‘You Don’t Need To Laugh’ and ‘After All’ are weighted with anguish and anger, heartache and regret. Emotionally intoned, elemental songs.

No surprise he picks the fiercely introspective Dylan song, ‘Tom Thumb Blues’ and Willie Dixon’s explosive ‘I’m Ready’ as his chosen covers.

High Life followed in 1974. The debut had been recorded in London by Brinsley Schwarz manager, Dave Robinson. Huge leap then to Atlanta, Georgia and the legendary Allen Touissaint, who co-wrote the material with Miller, and produced the album. Toussaint produced for many, including Solomon Burke, Willy DeVille and Robert Palmer.

Together, they wrote a great batch of songs. ‘Brickyard Blues’, ‘With You In Mind’ and ‘Falling In Love Again’ (if ever a song formed the template for accessible seventies blues rock it’s this one) are among the best Miller ever wrote/recorded.

Gritty, granular blues rock, carrying a very personal emotional weight. Disappointingly, the production was a touch too polished for Miller’s tastes. He wanted it raw and raucous, he wanted ragged edges… he wanted it to reflect his past and his state of mind.

Again, despite the critical acclaim, it failed at the box office.

As per frustratingly usual, several of the songs on High Life became big for other artists. Betty Wright and Three Dog Night reaped the benefit in the US charts.

1975 and The Rock. Anyone plugged into the history of Miller’s music could see that he was truly beginning to give it some solid shape and form, an easily identifiable Miller sound.

His abortive attempt to put a band together with Andy (Free) Fraser at least gave life to two outstanding rock songs. The expertly crafted ‘A Fool In Love’ and ‘I Know Why The Sun Don’t Shine’ light up this album like a searchlight on a dark night. One blasts into rock’n'roll orbit thanks to the Memphis Horns, the other broods on a satisfyingly mournful blues lament, vividly marrying narrative to the music, again demonstrating Miller’s often underrated compositional skills.

The album also gave birth to what would eventually be one of Miller’s best known songs. ‘Aint Got No Money’ is a blazing, brass heavy barroom stomp that seemed to work its way into every corner of FM Radio (but no further). It would later be covered by many Miller admirers, principally Bob Seger and Chris Farlowe.

Each of these 3 remasters has been beefed up with bonus tracks. A dozen or more live versions, special edits and previously unreleased tracks are spread across the 3 CDs, each providing additional proof of Miller’s remarkable yet under-appreciated talent.  ****

Album review: RPWL: God Has Failed – Live And Personal

RPWL - God Has Failed: Live And Personal

Gentle Art Of Music [Release date: 30.04.21]

RPWL started life way back as a Pink Floyd tribute band, and, rather like Marillion and their relentless (and wrong) “Genesis Clones” soubriquet, struggled early on to free themselves of the PF comparisons.

Twenty years on and with ten studio and seven live albums behind them, they have deservedly put that issue to bed and are now hailed as one of the foremost progressive rock bands in Europe.

And here is where it all began.

The band was fully rehearsed and all set to embark on on a multi-week, multi-country tour to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their debut album ‘God Has Failed’ before the pandemic intervened.

So, rather than let all that work go to waste, and similar to Katatonia with their “Dead Air’ album, they assembled in a concert hall in their home town of Freising (Germany), played the whole thing live in front of an imaginary audience and filmed it for posterity.

And it’s interesting to listen to a band play an album in its entirety with twenty years more musical experience on the clock.

It was a great debut album anyway but this is a step-up and sounds much fresher and more muscular in the live setting.

Although there are recurring themes throughout, ‘God Has Failed’ is not really a concept album per sé. There are love songs, songs about the state of the world (yes, even then) and songs about loss, all pulled together with outstanding musicianship and, as is always the case with RPWL, an articulate and challenging libretto.

You WILL hear the odd ‘Floyd trope here and there (which progressive rock album is completely devoid of them?), but this is RPWL’s own sound and set a precursor for the exceptional albums that were to follow.

The descending riff of the three parts of ‘Hole In The Sky’ is the touchstone for the album and it keeps showing up here and there to keep the flow.

Kalle Wallner’s guitar work on ‘Who Do You Think We Are’, ‘Spring Of Freedom’ and ‘In Your Dreams’ is just sublime, there’s nice acoustic on ‘What I Need (Pts.1 & 2)’ and a six string blow-out on ‘Hole In The Sky (Pt.3)’ – but overall this is a collective effort where everyone plays a key part in making it sound as good as it does.

Strangely, despite the album title, the songs are not as acerbically anti-religious as you would think, but certainly laid down a template for the recurring atheistic theme of subsequent work.

So, a great debut album given new life and, if you’ve never heard RPWL (shame on you!), as good a place as any to begin to appreciate one of the finest prog bands out there.

Album review: GHOSTS OF MEN – Exhale

GHOSTS OF MEN - Exhale

Regent Street Records [Release date 21.05.21]

No psychodrama queens, Ghosts of Men are as comfortable as any rock band can be in writing about mental health. It’s hardly a selling point, but on this their second album, they undercut the inner turmoil that’s been suffered by many, many people during pandemic lockdowns, with the sheer bravado of performance and the smart, sensory underload of their songs. It’s a provocative, stripped down approach that’s full of challenging notions. But it engages quickly, and the duo’s emotional investment rubs off.

Fuelled by a fuzz bursting riff and the pounding percussive thud of an insistent bass guitar, the minimalist vigour of ‘Trouble’ and ‘Tell Me Why’ confirm that you can’t be the future without looking back. It’s as elemental as the booming blues heaviosity of the White Stripes, and is powered by the same barely controlled intensity of the Black Keys.

This stuff – and we should include the pulsing ‘You Can’t Help Me’ and the funky ‘It’s Okay’ – is edge of the seat listening. You expect them to go careering off the rails at any moment. And yet each carries a commercially appealing melodic core, recalling the way in Zappa and Beefheart leavened the controlled chaos with great tunes, back in the last century.

That said, standout track might just be the rapped up ‘Hold On’ (featuring Samantics), a song that seems to flow with the logic of a nightmare. It’s where the darkness meets the light. ***1/2

Album review: KAI STRAUSS – In My Prime

Kai Strauss - In My Prime

Continental Record Services [Release date 20.11.20]

Kai Straus’s aptly titled album ‘I’m In My Prime’ sees him updating traditional blues styles from Chicago to the West Coast, while confirming his own impressive elements of tone, taste and feel.

Strauss is a multiple German blues award winner with a pedigree stretching back to 1990, from being a sideman with Memo Gonzales, to stepping out as a band leader in has own right.

Clearly he has learned much. His Euro take on the blues is shot though with integrity, real ability and the kind of funky soulful blues sensibility that only a road tested band can deliver.

With the exception of ‘World Crisis Blues’ (of which more later), a succession of heartfelt and sometimes autobiographical narratives on 4 original songs and 5 co-writes connects perfectly with his band’s deep grooves.

And if there’s a slight disappointment it’s simply that he might have been a bit more adventurous and filled the album with more of his own songs.

The 2 covers here best serve to illustrate the fact Strauss is worthy of comparison with some of the greats, but that’s not to say they are all great songs.

His funky makeover of  Nick Gravenites and Mike Bloomfield’s ‘You’re Killing My Love’ finds him in his element, while he stretches to a full bodied tone on a fine arrangement of Johnny Copeland’s ‘Down On Bended Knee’, even if this version does lack Copeland’s vocal grit.

There are 2 co-writes with lyricist Doug Jay, of which the title track is best, carrying a justified mission statement which offers all the evidence as to why Strauss’s mentor Otis Grand rates him so highly.

It’s an unabashed meeting of musical and lyrical swagger: “Over 30 years with this guitar in my hand, north, south, east west, I played all over this land, I learnt my trade a long time ago, learned from the best, always give a good show.”

He takes on the mantle of the younger BB King with shades of Albert Collins on an up tempo shuffle with a jump feel. He adds a blizzard of intense notes, alongside Sax Gordon’s buzzing baritone and some judicious horn stabs.

His expressive vocal is not too far removed from Rick Estrin. In other words he knows the limits of his range and doesn’t exceed it.

The other Doug Jay co-write is ‘A Day Late And A Dollar short’, as Strauss sinewy guitar playing brings an edge to an old blues theme, though neither his vocal or the lyrics quite have the gravitas to make a significant emotional connection.

No matter, for the most part this is an exemplary album shot through with effortless technique, authenticity and real feel.

It’s on his own material that he is best, such as the autobiographical single ‘Guest In The House Of the Blues’ (with lyrical help from drummer Alex Lex).

It’s one of several funky grooves with fine band interplay on which he contextualising his own music. A combination of intricate guitar and a subtle horn arrangement flows seamlessly into Paul Jobson’s funky keyboard solo, before Strauss references his blues antecedents from Albert Collins to the 3 King’s with total conviction.

The opening ‘Going To London’ opens with a subtle jammed fade in, as his expressive vocal teases out his theme: “I got the blues for the big city, got to leave the countryside.”

His perfectly weighted long linear guitar lines give the track an extra emotional punch. Bassist Kevin Duvernay anchors an exaggerated 70’s sounding funky bass heavy groove, which is neatly offset by a cool horn arrangement from Strauss’s American horn section.

And it’s those elements of subtlety and cool that permeates an album that is never rushed, but still has musical ambition, as evidenced by the line: “I want to see that swinging city, Europe cradle of the blues.”

The exquisite signature solo just before the fade provides a magical moment that sets the high standard for the rest of the album.

The key to everything is his fluid and versatile playing which is soulful on the nuanced blues of the Strauss/Duvernay penned ‘Keep You Happy’, funky on the Gravenites/Bloomfield cover ‘You’re Killing My Love’, and a very confident on the big band blues arrangement of Johnny Copeland’s ‘Down On Bended Knee’. The latter pushes his vocal to the limit without quite nailing Copeland’s original vocal grit.

Tommie Harris is the lyricist on ‘Betting My Life On The Blues’ on which a blur of staccato horns are counterweighted by mellifluous guitar, while on the closing magisterial slow blues ‘Wait A Minute Baby’, Strauss’s brusque guitar tone dwarfs his own slightly mixed back vocals, though he sensibly lets the track breathe enough to let the lyrics resonate.

He dives deep to uncover real feel in a variety of blues related subjects, no more so than on ‘World Crisis Blues’ in a welcome alignment of blues with current affairs.

It’s a fine track, but has a curious disconnect between the weight of his lyrics and the outright swing-led celebratory arrangement.

That’s not to say blues shouldn’t be fun, or that meaningful topics shouldn’t have an accessible musical feel. But it still feels a little surreal to groove along to Thomas Feldmann’s celebratory harp-driven swing, while Kai sings: “You know the world is in a crisis, from Houston Texas down to Rome.”

It’s a minor hiccup on an otherwise excellent blues album with a double mission statement. He eloquently confirms that Euro blues has an identity of its own and that blues is an all inclusive emotion any person can feel.

‘In My Prime’ shares every aspect of that enduring emotional connection and the enduring musical genre as a whole. ****

Gig review: JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 20 May 2021

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 20 May 2021

If 2020 was a desert for live music, the road out of lockdown in 2021 has been an even longer and gloomier slog. Down in South West London, Cavern owner Noel Nevin has been fighting the good fight to stay open all pandemic long.  Indeed this solo show by Jim Kirkpatrick had already been rescheduled three times, so he spoke for all of us as he came on stage and cheerily shouted ‘its a f—ing gig’!

Best known for playing a key part in FM’s regeneration as their guitarist for the last 12 years, he has also collaborated with numerous people, most notably Bernie Marsden with whom he shares some similarities – a love of the blues but rooted in a melodic song-oriented sensibility. As a result his solo album ‘Ballad Of A Prodigal Son’ was one of last year’s pleasant surprises.

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 20 May 2021

Opening the first of two short sets with the title track, he mixed by my reckoning five songs from the album with songs from other projects such as ‘Heavy Weather’. He possessed a confident and easy charm,  telling anecdotes with a comedian’s timing about some of the people he has worked with, along with a running gag at the number of songs he wrote for other artists that were not used as intended.

Combined with his more than decent singing and energetic performance, Jim therefore made light of the potentially difficult task of a making one man acoustic performance work and hold people’s attention.

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 20 May 2021

Anyone hoping for FM material was swiftly disabused of the notion as he modestly admitted only Steve Overland’s  peerless voice could do those songs justice. Instead the set focused more on the blues, including ’61 and 49’, a slide driven number written in tribute to Robert Johnson (is it an unwritten rule that every blues artist must have one such song?) and a cover of ‘Malted Milk’ by the man himself. Originals ‘Ain’t Going Down Alone’ and ‘Always on the Road’ were particularly enjoyable.

Returning to the gig scene after such a long absence meant it was like rediscovering the joys of enjoying live music with like minded friends for the first time. Yes, there were adjustments, but dare I say I actually preferred the reduced capacity and more sedate atmosphere to the heaving crowds that normally pack this tiny neighbourhood bar to its very gills. Chatting to friends old and new as drinks were brought to circular tables gave the air of attending an agreeable wedding reception.

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 20 May 2021

The second set opened with another impressive song from the album in ‘No Such Thing as a Sure Thing’  but was rather more covers heavy,  starting with the full ‘part 1 and 2’ version of ‘Oh Well’ with Jim playing to the gallery as he teased the crowd with his guitar shape pulling.  I was also delighted,  with my AOR anorak hat on, to hear Jude Cole’s ‘House of Blues’, while he rocked out on ‘Got to Know’.

One of the highlights for me was his cover of the Lead Belly song popularised by Rory Gallagher, ‘Out on the Western Plain’, even getting his tongue round the ‘cow cow yicky yicky yay’ chorus. Best of all he ended the night with a storming version of ‘She’s Not There’, belting it out with a powerful gusto.

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 20 May 2021

There was time for a encore and he cheekily teased those of us FM fans present with the opening chords to ‘That Girl’ but instead a lively cover of Robert Johnson’s ‘Walking Blues’ fitted the theme of the evening rather better.

After the year we have had, any gig would have been great- that this one was so accomplished and entertaining was merely the icing on the cake of a memorable evening.
