THE GATHERING – Disclosure

The Gathering - Disclosure

I have to confess I’ve never tripped over The Gathering – a Dutch band who started out in 1989 pedalling death/doom metal, but who like the rest of us have mellowed with the passing years and evolved into something quite different.

The last mention I can find on GRTR! was when we reviewed the band’s 2003 album Souvenirs – one that marked a shift into more progressive waters with Jason Ritchie describing the album as ‘perfect for late night listening’ and noting the star of the show as Anneke Van Giersbergen with her breathy, ethereal vocals.

Several albums have been shipped since then, Home (2006) and The West Pole (2010), the latter the first with current Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland (ex-doom metal band Octavia Sperati).

And a quick dip back into that album suggests they’re still evolving at a furious rate. While The West Pole was a frenetic and angular rock orientated affair, Disclosure swirls around the listener like an ambient cloak with shades of a contemporary Propaganda or Enigma.

It’s a wonderful marriage of electronic and organic sounds coloured by Silje’s seductive vocals and guest appearances by Jos van den Dungen on violin and viola, Noel Hofman on trumpet, and Maaike Peterse on cello.  Blissful.
