Six piece progressive metal band from Finland who impress on this album, although it does take a few plays to really gel with the listener. The vocals of Jouni Partanen are another feature of the album, one minute quietly drawing the listener into the music on say ‘Black Box’, where he starts off singing all mellow before he starts screaming away. The song also features a hook filled outro.
The jolly fun fair riff on ‘Hey Ho!’ is totally at odds to the lyric and it shouldn’t work but it does! ‘I Have Superhuman Powers’ fair gallops along, nice tasty guitar riffs keep this one driving along. ‘Break The News’ sees the band produce a fine melodic rock tune, at odds sound wise with the rest of the album but it shows another side to the band.
The tree part title track is the closet to the prog metal of bands like Symphony X and there is a little hint of Porcupine Tree in the quieter guitar passages.
If you like you prog metal to sound like a copy of/tribute to Dream Theater this album isn’t for you, if however you like a musical melting pot and a challenging listen Standing Ovation will have you on your feet applauding. Sorry couldn’t resist a pun on the band’s name J
