Deadaudiosaints - The Purge EP

DEADAUDIOSAINTS  The Purge EP
Self Release  [Release date 01.09.14]

DeadAudioSaints are a brand new band from Yorkshire who formed in 2013. They consist of two brothers, Danny and Corey Jones and Tyla-Joe Connett, they use a floating live drummer for shows.

‘The Purge EP’ is their debut and it is a great listen. DeadAudioSaints play alternative rock with a punk edge and plenty of synth. This EP is energetic and fast paced with great tunes and blistering riffs.

The EP bursts into life with ‘The Purge’, a song which races along at a great pace, strong rhythms and a lovely distorted sound. ‘Tear Apart’ is next with a more laid back sound, akin to the Black Spiders or Muse. ‘The Game’ is a slower track and ‘Don’t Like You’ is a cracking song, plenty of synth, heavy riffs and a punky chorus. Closer ‘Taking Control’ starts with a riff very close to Rammstein’s ‘Mein Land’, then it takes on its own identity, ‘hard-hitting electro heavy rock’ indeed, what’s not to like?

DeadAudiosaints were one of the 69 bands picked for the voting round of ‘Highway to Hell’ and have made it through to the final 20 bands in the Glasgow competition for a slot at this year’s Hard Rock Hell festival and a world-wide record deal.

This is a great EP from a band who deserve to do well, I love it!  *****

Syren City - Escape

SYREN CITY – Escape EP
Self release  [Release date 15.09.14]

Syren City are a five piece from Bristol who formed in 2011. Escape has five tracks and all are excellent, alternative rock with plenty of individuality and innovation. They have played support to Turbowolf, Max Raptor and many others.

Syren City name ‘Foo Fighters’, and ‘Taking Back Sunday’ as influences and this EP would appeal to fans of these and also to just about any rock fan.

Stand out tracks for me are ‘Bleed’ and ‘Asphodel’, the first being the opener with plenty of twists and turns and a pounding beat and the last the closer with aggressive vocals, chants and great melodies. Louis Catlett on drums and Adam Armour on bass keep everything together with Ian Chadderton and Adam Hopton on guitar. Simon Roach’s vocals suit the music well with the ‘gang’ choruses being of particular note.

Syren City play loud with loads of talent and fire, ‘Escape’ is an EP you can listen to again and again without getting bored.  ****1/2

Apherium - Neoteric

APHERIUM  Neoteric EP
Self Release  [Release date 22.09.14]

Apherium formed in 2011 in Yeovil. Apherium have previously released an EP and an album, this is their second EP. Billed as a mix of Bring Me The Horizon, and Biffy Clyro and promising to ‘melt my ears’ I was hoping for the best. Unfortunately no ear melting occurred.

Apherium provide five tracks on ‘Neoteric’, the best of which comes right at the end, ‘Rise Again’. Throughout the EP the music is a bit on the bland side after the ear melting promise. The music is fairly well played but, maybe it is the mix, lacking in excitement and energy.

‘New Light’ is a quiet track followed by ‘Silver Tongues’ which has a bit more drive but descends into another bland song. ‘Angels of Our Nature’ continues the quiet, fairly melodic, bland theme and finally we get a bit more energy in ‘Shadows’, after a slow start.

The EP finishes with the aforementioned ‘Rise Again’, more in the style of ‘Biffy ‘than Bring Me The Horizon this one, more powerful riffs from the start and then, eventually , a great track with melodic hooks and a strong chorus.

I can’t help feeling Apherium suffered from the billing, not delivering on what was promised, all in all they are not a bad band but not for me I’m afraid.  **1/2
