DVD review: THE ROLLING STONES – Totally Stripped

Eagle Rock [Release date 03.06.16]

Originally recorded and released in 1995, The Rolling Stones’ “Stripped” album has been given an overhaul and is being re-released as “Totally Stripped”. The live recordings are more pared down than acoustic and have a raw energy that captures the band perfectly. The 14 track CD now contains different tracks from the original release and these include a majestic version of “Gimme Shelter” alongside fan favourites like “Miss You”, “Brown Sugar” and “Rip This Joint”, this alone makes this impressive set worth buying but there is so much more to it.

Eagle Rock has done a stunning job putting “Totally Stripped” together. The documentary that tells the story of the album- one of the band’s most underrated-  through interviews, live and rehearsal footage was originally shown on the BBC and now has a new fresh and complete feel.  As a massive fan of the band the studio rehearsal footage is a joy to watch and comes from a great period in the bands history. We get to see as they run through “The Spider and The Fly” for the first time in nearly 30 years, and it sounds immense, there is also a great version of “Tumblin’ Dice” recorded backstage in Amsterdam, renditions of “Dead Flowers”, “Jumping Jack Flash“, “Shine A Light”, “You Got Me Rocking” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone”.

The interview footage is not just contained to the 4 main members of The Stones (bassist Bill Wyman having recently departed the band) but features the likes of keyboardist Chuck Leavell, the late Bobby Keys and bass player Darryl Jones when he was still the new boy, alongside “Stripped” producer Don Was.

The deluxe edition of “Totally Stripped” comes in a hardback book and includes the album, documentary DVD and 3 additional DVDs each containing one of the live shows that were recorded to make the album (London’s Brixton Academy, Paris Olympia and The Paradiso in Amsterdam).

“Totally Stripped” is an superb release and should be in your collection whether you are a huge or just a casual fan of The Rolling Stones. *****
