Album review: JOHN BUTLER TRIO – Home

Because Music [Release date 28.09.18]

‘Home’ is the John Butler Trio’s first album since 2014′s ‘Flesh & Blood’, which reached number 2 in his native Australian charts, as well as topping the US Billboard chart and those of France and Switzerland. ‘Home’ is produced by Jan Skubiszewski, with Butler joined by this long-time band members bassist Byron Luiters and percussionist Grant Gerathy.

The album is a personal one to John Butler, based on his dealing with anxiety issues and the songs cover family life, love and being a modern man. Musically the songs cover a multitude of styles, from the alt country on Coffee, Methadone & Cigarettes, through to the big blues bruiser that is ‘Wade In The Water’.

John Butler produces musical magic on ‘Just Call’, where country playing and electronica beats meld seamlessly. ‘Brown Eye Bird’ also utilises these two musical sounds to good effect.

‘You Don’t Have To Be Angry Anymore’ is a beautiful song, certainly the most ‘pop’ song on here and one with a potential to reach new listeners.

Although John Butler delves into many musical styles, he adds his own musical touch to create a sound unique to the John Butler Trio. Listening to ‘Home’ it is easy to see why he is such a success in his native Australia and the US, and about time the UK caught up!

Music can have a positive effect not only on the listener, but the artist as well as they share their experiences through words and song. ‘Home’ is one such album that will appeal to those already familiar with his music and open it up to a whole new audience given the heartfelt music on offer here. ****
