Album review: SEVENTH WONDER – Tiara

Frontiers [Release date 12.10.18]

It has been eight years since Seventh Wonder’s last album ‘The Great Escape’, in part due to the commitments of vocalist Tommy Karevik in Kamelot, who he joined in 2012. One new member in the band since their last album is drummer  Stefan Norgren.

Written by bassist Andreas Blomqvist and Tommy Karevik, who also produced the album, ’Tiara’ is a concept piece based on an alien race the Everones who are set to destroy earth and Tiara is humanity’s last hope as she goes to save the human race.

The album has instant hits like ‘The Everones’ – complete with robotic voices to introduce the Everones – and the ultra catchy ‘Dream Machines’. Elsewhere there is the epic closer ‘Exhale’, a chance for keyboards player Andreas “Kyrt” Söderin to shine, which has plenty of musical variety and another stunning vocal performance from Tommy Karevik. He certainly seems to get more freedom in Seventh Wonder to show off his impressive singing, with the gentler moments on ‘Goodnight’ a fine example. That song is one of the album’s (many!) highlights, from the piano playing through to the guitar riffs and solos from Johan Liefvendahl.

It is an album that requires a few plays to fully appreciate all that is going on musically. The production is spot on with so many little details adding greatly to the overall sound, be it a violin solo or orchestral backing. It is so good to have Seventh Wonder back, especially at a time when many progressive/melodic metal bands sound so similar and their music fails to connect. A glorious listen from start to finish. ****1/2
