Album review: THE MILK MEN – Milky Way

Milk Men

Website [Release date 15.05.26]

Sometimes I think I’ve lived in a parallel universe for a few years, where everything is the same but there is no music, and then I suddenly pop back into the same universe as you, and people are like – “have you heard this band, have you heard that band”. Inevitably I haven’t. But there are so many bands aren’t there, but when a particular band has been nominated for numerous UK Blues awards and have just released their seventh album, you would think I might have come across them. But no, I even looked at the name and thought Indie band, but hitting the play button, I jumped back in amazement when the raunchy opening riff of Waiting For Some Rock n Roll hit me in that region which makes you want to behave irresponsibly.

Eleven nominations!!! Including Best Band (three times), Best Emerging Act, Best Album, Best Album (2 years running) Best Vocalist (twice) Best Contemporary Artist, Best Blues Festival (they put on their own blues festival Milkfest), and UK Blues Challenge Finalists. Goddamnit give them a frigging award, eleven nominations is just teasing them.

Do they deserve one? Well, yes! Vocalist Jamie Smy has had comparisons to Rod Stewart, I think it’s more Spike from The Quireboys., so lets say he sits between Rod and Spike The Best Contemporary artist is guitarist Adam Norsworthy, he who set my hair on fire at the beginning of the album, and continued to blaze through this scorching album. The rhythm section of Lloyd Green on bass and Mike Roberts on drums, make up the quartet of this Best Band. They really work well together as the engine room or is it the milk float of the Milk Men. I noticed a particularly tasty driving bass run on Give It Up, the fifth track on the album, and once my ears had pricked up I noticed him all over the songs. Both are The Pirates related – Lloyd being the son of legendary guitarist Mick Green and Mike Roberts played drums with them 2005 – 2010, so not surprising they gel.

Like all good rock n roll bands they have a tender side which is shown on three tracks on this album – Loving You Baby, which is the new single, and wouldn’t have sounded out of place on side two of Exile On Main Street with its country blues vibe. Another You, again acoustic driven, and the closing anthemic ballad Evergreen, which again reminds me of The Quireboys, particularly with the added keyboards of Greg Coulson. Whoever it reminds me of it is an emotional lifting, building ballad and an excellent way to finish the album, and leaves you thirsting for more.

The remaining tracks are all great rocking blues tracks, particularly Jimmy The Weasel, which is Dr Feelgood meets Thin Lizzy in both their primes. Second track Son Of A Gun dips into Stax soul territory, but still manages to rock out. Penultimate track I’ve Been Losing features some fine blues harp courtesy of esteemed all round bluesman Nigel Feist

So, rock n roll, blues, soul, acoustic ballads, sing along hook lines on all songs, this is a well rounded and varied album from a maturing band who know where they live on Rock n Roll Boulevard

These boys unashamedly wear their influences on their sleeves, and good on them, we need somebody to take good honest rock n roll into the future, when the old guard are falling by the wayside. And they need an award!! ****
