Album review : FAITH NYC – Love Is A Wish Away

Bandcamp [Release date : 15.05.26]

Faith NYC is immensely talented singer/ writer/ bass player, Felice Rosser.

“Felice Rosser brought her Detroit ears to punk, having been teethed on Motown. Reggae became a powerful influence too” (Rolling Stone/ New York Times music critic Lucy Sante).

“Felice’s ‘commanding, muscular voice’ reminds him of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, with stylings reminiscent of guitarist Joan Armatrading” (Wire music critic, Michael A. Gonzalez).

“hints of Sly, or Sly and Robbie, or the Doors or Nina Simone in the Faith NYC blueprint” (Oral historian Bud Kliment).

‘The sound and feel of authentic, funky rock’n’roll’ (Chris Frantz, Talking Heads)

These are only a few of the complimentary comments being made in reference to Felice Rosser’s fourth and latest album, Love Is A Wish Away.

Rosser moved from the USA’s midwest to the Big Apple (is it still called that?) in her youth.
Impressed and inspired by what she encountered there – punk’s DIY attitude, Rock & Roll, Funk, Free Jazz, Dub, Reggae and the new Hip Hop scene – it all became part of her musical language.

She joined all female reggae band, Sistren, before forming Faith NYC, part of Vernon (Living Colour) Reid’s collective, Black Rock Coalition (BRC).

Known widely now for her powerful and emotional voice, Rosser has clearly distilled all those influences into a single unique sound on her latest album, still finding subtlety in the strength of material like the radio-friendly ‘Love In A Silent Way’ and ‘Can I Make It Up To You’.

‘Overpass’ and ‘Everything Is All Around’ dig deep into rock’n’roll’s history, where Rosser reminds us that the genre’s roots lead way back to R’n’B, Gospel, Blues and Jazz.

It’s all been assembled with skill and feeling by producer/ guitarist Justin Adams. With Love Is A Wish Away, he’s helped Rosser form and shape all those influences into her own likeness. ****
