Quick plays: BUSH, BOSS HOSS

Bush - Man On The Run

BUSH – Man On The Run

Sony Music [Released 20.10.14]

Once touted as the “British Nirvana” album number 6 finds Bush in a mature sounding place, although still maintaining everything that helped them sell in excess of 20 million albums in the US and Canada alone. This year it is 20 years since the band released debut album “Sixteen Stone” and they have an impressive record of 17 consecutive singles charting and that looks set to continue with this album’s lead single “The Only Way Out”.

At times dark but a great slice of alternative rock, with electronic undertones and clever lyrics throughout, one song that sums up the album perfectly is title track “Man On The Run”. From the pop tinged “Broken In Paradise” to the slower, dark and brooding “Surrender” it looks like Bush have another hit on their hands and if U2 had given away a track of “Loneliness Is A Killer” quality then few people would have complained.

The production is split between Nick Raskulinecz and Jay Baumgardner, with the band’s Gavin Rossdale taking the role of executive producer and this arrangement works seamlessly.  “This House Is On Fire”, “Bodies In Motion”,  and “Dangerous Love” are all highlights whilst the deluxe edition includes a trio of outstanding tracks in “Let Yourself Go”, “Speeding Through The Bright Lights” and “The Golden Age”.

“Man On The Run” will no doubt continue Bush’s great success story and fair play to them. ****

THE BOSS HOSS – Cowboys From Hell

Universal

Having previously released seven studio albums in their 10 year career, Berlin’s The Boss Hoss are releasing the 16 track compilation “Cowboys From Hell” to introduce them to a wider market and as an introduction to the band opening track “Bullpower” will no doubt turn a few heads.

Mixing the sounds of cowboy punk, goth, blues, metal and country- The Boss Hoss started as a band covering chart hits in these styles, however, havesince gone on to carve out their own success. “Cowboys From Hell” contains both live and studio tracks and includes covers of Motorhead’s “Killers” and Cameo’s “Word Up”.

There is not a lot to dislike here as “Bullpower” has echoes of The Cult, “Whatever” Danzig and “Liberty of Action” D.A.D. “Keep On Dancing” is tongue in cheek whilst the likes of “Stallion Battalion” are better than their titles may suggest.  Other flavours on the album include the funk laden “Do It” and “Backdoor Man” which has that 50’s rock n roll feel but done heavier. Of the remaining tracks, “My Personal Song” and “Last Day (Do or Die)” are worth a listen and the band’s cover of Cameo’s “Word Up” is strangely good.

As an introduction to the band “Cowboys From Hell” does a good job. ***1/2
